PEREQ ‏א‎
CHAPTER 1

1:1 That which was me-rosh, that which we have heard, that which we have seen with our eyes, that which we saw, and our hands touched, `al-d'var ha-chayyim2 (v'ha-chayyim was revealed, and we have seen, and testify, and declare to you chayyei `olam, which was with ha-Av, and was revealed to us);  3 that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have koinonia1-3 with us.  Yes, and our koinonia is with ha-Av, and with B'no, Yeshua ha-Mashiach.  4 And we write these things to you, that our simchah may be made full.

1:5 This is the message which we have heard from him and announce to you, that Elohim or hu, and in him is no darkness at all.   6 If we say that we have koinonia with him and walk in the darkness, we lie, and don't tell ha-emet.  7 But if we walk ba-or, as he is ba-or, we have koinonia with one another, and ha-dam Yeshua ha-Mashiach, B'no, cleanses us from kol chet.  8 If we say that ein banu chet, we deceive ourselves, v'ha-emet ein banu.  9 If we confess our chata'im, ne'eman hu v'tzaddik to forgive us ha-chata'im, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  10 If we say that we haven't sinned, we make him a liar, and his davar is not in us.

PEREQ ‏ב‎
CHAPTER 2

2:1 My little y'ladim, I write these things to you so that you may not sin.  If anyone sins, we have a Melitz lifnei ha-Av, Yeshua ha-Mashiach, ha-tzaddik.  2 And he is the kapporet for our chata'im, and not for ours only, but also for kol ha`olam.  3 This is how we know that we know him: if we keep his mitzvot.  4 He who says, "I know him," and doesn't keep his mitzvot is a liar, and ha-emet is not in him.  5 But whoever keeps his davar, ahavat Elohim has most assuredly been perfected in him.  This is how we know that we are in him:  6 he who says he remains in him ought himself also to walk just as he walked.

2:7 Achim, I write no mitzvah chadashah to you, but an old mitzvah which you had me-rosh.  The old mitzvah is ha-davar which you heard me-rosh.  8 Again, I write a mitzvah chadashah to you, which thing is emet in him and in you; because the darkness is passing away, and ha-or ha-emet already shines.  9 He who says he is ba-or and hates his ach is in the darkness even until now.  10 He who loves his ach remains ba-or, and there is no occasion for stumbling in him.  11 But he who hates his ach is in the darkness, and walks in the darkness, and doesn't know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

2:12 I write to you, little y'ladim, because your chata'im are forgiven you for his name's sake.  13 I write to you, ha-avot, because you have known (him who is) me-rosh.  I write to you, young men, because you have overcome ha-ra.  I write to you, y'ladim, because you know ha-Av.  14 I have written to you, ha-avot, because you know him asher me-rosh.  I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and d'var ha-Elohim remains in you, and you have overcome ha-ra.

2:15 Don't love ha`olam, neither the things that are ba`olam.  If anyone loves ha`olam, ahavat ha-Av isn't in him.  16 For all that is ba`olam, the lust of ha-basar, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of wealth isn't of ha-Av, but is of ha`olam.  17 Ha`olam is passing away with its lusts, but he who does the will of Elohim remains l`olam.

2:18 Y'ladim, it is a last hour, and as you heard that opposites of2-18 Mashiach are coming, even now many opposites of2-18 ha-Mashiach have arisen.  By this we know that it is a last hour.  19 They went out from us, but they didn't belong to us; for if they had belonged to us, they would have continued with us.  But they left, that they might be revealed that none of them belong to us.  20 You have an anointing from ha-Kadosh, and you all know.  21 I have not written to you because you don't know ha-emet, but because you know it, and because no lie is of ha-emet.  22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Yeshua is ha-Mashiach?  This is the opposite of2-18 ha-Mashiach, he who denies ha-Av u'va-Ben.  23 Whoever denies ha-Ben, the same doesn't have ha-Av.  He who confesses ha-Ben has ha-Av also.  24 Therefore, as for you, let that remain in you which you heard me-rosh.  If that which you heard me-rosh remains in you, you also will remain ba-Ben u'va-Av.  25 This is the promise which he promised us, chayyei `olam.

2:26 These things I have written to you concerning those who would lead you astray.  27 As for you, the anointing which you received from him remains in you, and you don't need for anyone to teach you.  But as his anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is emet, and is no lie, and even as it taught you, you will remain in him.

2:28 Now, y'ladim, remain in him, that when he appears, we may have boldness, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.  29 If you know ki tzaddik hu, you know that everyone who practices tz'dakah is born of him.

PEREQ ‏ג‎
CHAPTER 3

3:1 See how great ahavat ha-Av has been bestowed on us, that we may be called b'nei ha-Elohim!  Because of this, ha`olam doesn't know us, because it didn't know him.  2 Beloved, now we are b'nei ha-Elohim, and it is not yet revealed what we will be.  But we know that, when he is revealed, we will be like him; for we will see him just as he is.  3 Everyone who has this tikvah set on him makes himself tahor, even as he is tahor.

3:4 Everyone who sins also commits Torah-less deeds.  Chet is Torah-lessness.  5 You know that he was revealed to take away our chata'im, and in him is ein chet.  6 Whoever remains in him doesn't sin.  Whoever sins hasn't seen him, neither knows him.  7 Little children, let no one lead you astray.  He who does tz'dakah is tzaddik, even as he is tzaddik.  8 He who sins is of ha-satan,3-8 for ha-satan has been sinning me-rosh.  For this, Ben ha-Elohim was revealed, that he might destroy the works of ha-satan.  9 Whoever is born of Elohim doesn't commit chet, because his zera remains in him; and he can't sin, because he is born of Elohim.  10 In this b'nei ha-Elohim are revealed, and b'nei ha-satan.  Whoever doesn't do tz'dakah is not of Elohim, neither is he who doesn't love his brother.

3:11 For this is the message which you heard me-rosh, that we should love one another;  12 unlike Kayin, who was min ha-ra, and killed his brother.  Why did he kill him?  Because his ma`asim were evil, and his brother's were tzedek.  13 Don't be surprised, my achim, if ha`olam hates you.  14 We know that we have passed min ha-mavet el ha-chayyim, because we love ha-achim.  He who doesn't love his ach remains ba-mavet.  15 Whoever hates his ach is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has chayyei `olam remaining in him.  16 By this we know ahavah, because he laid down his life for us.  We ought to lay down our lives for ha-achim.  17 But whoever has the goods of ha`olam and sees his ach in need, and shuts up his compassion from him, how does ahavat Elohim remain in him?  18 Y'ladim, let's not love in davar nor with the tongue, but b'ma`aseh v'emet.

3:19 And by this we know that we are of ha-emet, and persuade our l'vavot before him,  20 because if our lev condemns us, Elohim is greater than our lev, and knows all (things).  21 Beloved, if our lev doesn't condemn us, we have boldness toward Elohim;  22 and whatever we ask, we receive from him, because we keep his mitzvot and do the things that are pleasing in his sight.  23 This is his mitzvah, that we should believe in the name of B'no, Yeshua ha-Mashiach, and love one another, even as he commanded.  24 He who keeps his mitzvot remains in him, and he in him.  By this we know that he remains in us, by ha-Ruach which he gave us.

PEREQ ‏ד‎
CHAPTER 4

4:1 Beloved, don't believe every ruach, but test ha-ruchot, whether they are of Elohim, because many false nevi'im have gone out into ha`olam.  2 By this you know Ruach Elohim: kol ruach who confesses that Yeshua ha-Mashiach has come ba-basar, me-Elohim hu,  3 v'khol ruach who doesn't confess that Yeshua ha-Mashiach has come ba-basar is not of Elohim, and this is the opposite of4-3 ha-Mashiach, of which you have heard is coming.  Now it is ba`olam already.  4 You are of Elohim, y'ladim, and have overcome them; because greater is he who is in you than he who is ba`olam.  5 They are of ha`olam.  Therefore, they speak of ha`olam, and ha`olam hears them.  6 We are of Elohim.  He who knows Elohim listens to us.  He who is not of Elohim doesn't listen to us.  By this we know ruach ha-emet, and ha-ruach of error.

4:7 Beloved, let us love one another, for ahavah is of Elohim; and everyone who loves is born of Elohim, and knows Elohim.  8 He who doesn't love doesn't know Elohim, ki ha-Elohim, hu ahavah.  9 B'zot was ahavat Elohim revealed in us, that Elohim has sent his only begotten Son la`olam that we might live through him.  10 Zot hu ha-ahavah, not that we loved Elohim, but that he loved us, and sent B'no as the kapporet for our chata'im.  11 Beloved, if Elohim loved us so, we also ought to love one another.  12 No one has seen Elohim at any time.  If we love one another, Elohim remains in us, and his ahavah has been perfected in us.

4:13 By this we know that we remain in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Ruach.  14 We have seen and testify that ha-Av has sent ha-Ben as Moshia ha`olam.  15 Whoever will confess that Yeshua is Ben ha-Elohim, Elohim remains in him, and he b'Elohim.  16 We know and have believed ha-ahavah which Elohim has in us.  Elohim hu ahavah, and he who remains ba-ahavah remains b'Elohim, and Elohim remains in him.  17 Ba-zot, ahavah has been made perfect with us, that we may have boldness b'yom ha-din, because as he is, even so are we ba`olam hazeh.  18 There is no fear ba-ahavah; but perfect ahavah casts out fear, because fear has punishment.  He who fears has not been made perfect ba-ahavah.  19 We love Him, because he first loved us.  20 If a man says, "I love Elohim," and hates his ach, he is a liar; for he who doesn't love his ach whom he has seen, how can he love Elohim whom he has not seen?  21 Zot ha-mitzvah we have from him, that he who loves Elohim should also love his ach.

PEREQ ‏ה‎
CHAPTER 5

5:1 Kol ha-ma'amin ki Yeshua hu ha-Mashiach is born of Elohim.  Whoever loves ha-Av also loves ha-ben who is born of him.  2 By this we know that we love b'nei ha-Elohim, when we love Elohim and keep his mitzvot.  3 Ki zot ahavat Elohim, that we keep his mitzvot.  His mitzvot are not grievous.  4 For whatever is born of Elohim overcomes ha`olam.  This is the victory that has overcome ha`olam: your emunah.  5 Who is he who overcomes ha`olam, but ha-ma'amin that Yeshua hu Ben ha-Elohim?

5:6 This is he who came by mayim v'dam, Yeshua ha-Mashiach; not with ha-mayim only, but with ha-mayim u'va-dam.  It is ha-Ruach who bears `ed, because ha-Ruach hu ha-emet.  75-7-8 For there are three who bear `ed,  8 ha-Ruach, ha-mayim, v'ha-dam; and the three agree as one.  9 If we receive `edut b'nei adam, `edut ha-Elohim is greater; for this is `edut ha-Elohim which he has testified concerning B'no.  10 He who believes in Ben ha-Elohim has ha`edut in him.  He who doesn't believe Elohim has made him a liar, because he has not believed ba`edut that Elohim has given concerning B'no.  11 V'zot hi ha`edut ki chayyei `olam that Elohim gave to us, and this chayyim is in B'no.  12 He who has ha-Ben has ha-chayyim.  He who doesn't have Ben ha-Elohim doesn't have ha-chayyim.

5:13 These things I have written to ha-ma'aminim b'shem Ben ha-Elohim, that you may know that you have chayyei `olam, and that you may continue to believe b'shem Ben ha-Elohim.  14 This is the boldness which we have toward him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he listens to us.  15 And if we know that he listens to us whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions which we have asked of him.  16 If anyone sees his ach sinning a chet not leading la-mavet, he shall ask, and Elohim will give him chayyim for those who sin not la-mavet.  There is a chet leading la-mavet.  I don't say that concerning this he should make a request.  17 All unrighteousness is chet, and there is a chet not leading la-mavet.

5:18 We know that whoever is born of Elohim doesn't sin, but he who was born of Elohim keeps himself, and ha-ra doesn't touch him.

5:19 We know that we are me-Elohim, and kol ha`olam lies in ha-ra.

5:20 We know that Ben ha-Elohim has come, and has given us an understanding, that we know him who is emet, and we are in him who is emet, in B'no Yeshua ha-Mashiach.  This is ha-emet Elohim, and chayyei ha`olam.  21 Y'ladim, guard yourselves from idols.

1:3, 3, 6, 7:  koinonia: see glossary. RETURN
2:18:  "antichrist" - anti: over against, opposite, hence instead of.  In compound, denotes contrast, requital, substitution, correspondence; christ - anointing.  Therefore, "antichrist" doesn’t mean "against the Messiah," but is a replacement for the Messiah. RETURN

4:3:  See 2:18N. RETURN
5:7-8:  KJV: "For there are three that bear record [in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.  And there are three that bear witness in earth,] the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one."  The bracketed portion here does not appear in any Greek manuscript before the sixteenth century.  The earlier manuscripts, then, are saying that these three are referring to function, not substance of being.  It simply says that there are three that testify and these three are one. There are 'three' in obedience to the commandment given in Deut. 19:15. (Reference angelfire.com 11/17/12 [off-line 3/3/13]) See also John 9:9N and 18:5N. RETURN
