The Hebrew Names 'Plus' Version
Here is a link to the LIST OF BOOKS

This is a huge work in progress that may take me years.  I have finished all of the B'rit Chadashah ("New" Covenant), the Torah, the "Twelve" (the "minor" prophets), and a couple of the longer prophets.  Constructive criticism is welcome and appreciated, but please allow for common diversities in pronunciation - and Sephardic only.  Thanks for visiting.

If you have happened to stumble upon this page, please note that the table below is basically finished but will be added to, and may be amended, periodically.  Please check back occasionally.

This glossary presumes that the reader is at least somewhat familiar with some Hebrew Messianic terms, such as (but not all of or limited to) Messiah/Mashiach, Elohim, bet/beit (house/house of), ruach (spirit), kodesh (holy), Torah, B'rit Chadashah (New Covenant), etc.  All of the top 30 and at least 47 more (these are marked herein in green) of the 100 most-used words in the Hebrew Bible are included.  (The 100 most-used words are here..)

If you haven't started learning Hebrew yet, HERE is a good place to start with a chart of the alefbet.  ("Alef-bet" - first two letters of Hebrew.  "Alpha-bet[a]" - first two letters of Greek.  And Greek is what I'm trying to get away from with the HNPV.  I learned the Greek alphabet(a) a LONG time before I learned the Hebrew alefbet, but I know a lot more Hebrew than I do Greek now, and I'm editing the HNPV as a way to learn more.)

The three links below have been of inestimable use for spelling and punctuation, comparing them, since no two translations are identical.
The B'rit ha-Chadashah by The Booklet Bridge.
The Sar Shalom Hebrew-English Bible.
Hebrew New Testament by Ancient Hebrew Research Center.

Most Hebrew words are formed from a three-letter root with the addition of prefixes, suffixes and intermediary letters.  All 22 letters of the alefbet are consonants.  Vowel points, or nikkud (pointing), were added by Masoretic scholars in the 9th and 10th centuries in Tiberias on the western shore of Lake Kinneret, Yam ha-Galil, the Sea of Galilee.

The accent in most Hebrew words is on the last syllable.  Herein differently accented syllables are underlined, e.g., Eloheinu.  In modern Hebrew, the vowel sounds are ah, eh, ih, oh, oo.  In the ancient language, there were some differences, but these are almost entirely ignored today.  Most accents are per Brown-Driver-Briggs-Gesenius Hebrew-English Lexicon (BDB).  The numbers in the second column enclosed in parentheses are from Strong's concordance.  A letter in brackets after the Strong's number denotes a breakdown given by the concordance of the New American Standard Bible of homonyms not differentiated by Strong's numbering.  The numbers in brackets following Strong's are from BDB, and the letters with them denote the quadrant of the page (a=upper left, b=lower left, etc.)

The definite article ha (the) is almost always a prefix and considered part of its subject, but I have usually hyphenated it.  There is no indefinite article (a, an) in Hebrew as in English.  Occasionally, to delineate a specific object or person, "one" (echad [masc.] or achat [fem.]) may be used in the biblical text.

Hebrew words which, if translated to an English root word, would normally be translated by words which originated in Greek or Latin (or cognates thereof) are in bold in the glossary.  "(Grk.)" or "(Lat.)" following a word denotes that word's origin.  (Ex.: Heb. goy translates to Eng. nation, which is from Lat. natio: race, people.)

Words in the "construct state" are marked with an asterisk (*).  For explanation of construct, see Hebrew4Christians: The Construct Chain
It would be advantageous to become familiar with at least the first few paragraphs on that page.  Basically, a word is in the construct state when a noun modifies another noun (yeshuat [from yeshuah] Elohim - salvation of Elohim).

Transliterations are done according to common usage, but common usage is not standardized and some variations will occur, e.g.: c, k, or q for caf or kof [ק, כּ]; tz or ts for tzade/tsade/tsadi [ץ, צ], etc.  Usually kh is used for khaf [ך, כ] and ch for chet [ח].  Some Hebrew names not found in the TaNaKh[A], and therefore without a definite Hebrew spelling (e.g.: Herod/Hordos), are transliterated from the Hebrew or Greek translations.  Explanations are also given in the footnotes for certain words and the reasons for the use of others.
Apostrophes are often used 1) to avoid pronouncing a hiatus (two adjacent vowels in different syllables) as a diphthong; or 2) to replace a shva (a very short 'e' sound).  Ex.: hiatus: Yisra'el.  Shva: Y'hudah.

IMPORTANT: Be aware of the "backtick" ( ` ) which indicates that the next letter (in the Hebrew word) is an ayin (ע), which has a sound unknown in English (see Wiki) (the words Gaza and Gomorrah begin with ayin), rather than an alef (א), which does not.  For example: `et means "time," while et is either (1) the untranslatable indicator of a direct object or (2) "with."

Many common prepositions, adverbs, conjunctions, etc. in English are often not used in Hebrew.  E.g., malakh Yahweh, literally "messenger Yahweh," should be interpreted "a messenger (or angel) of Yahweh."

DIFFERENT FORMS OF WORDS
Forms of words change according to rules of syntax.  To put every form of a word into this list would require it to be extremely long.
When searching for a word, consider that the English 'b' and 'v' are interchangeable when you're searching for "ba-" or "va-," for example.

'F' and 'p' depend on whether a 'pe/peh' (פּ) has a dagesh (the dot in the center of the letter; not all letters can take a dagesh).

Changing a vowel point may change an 'a' to an 'e' or vice versa.  The letters '`ayin' and 'alef' are sometimes seemingly interchangeable, but both will be represented by 'a' or 'e' or another vowel depending on the vowel point, and similar changes occur with other letters.

For example, ein can be 'nothing' (אֵין‎) or 'spring' (of water) (עֵין) (both pronounced here rhyming with rain), and syntax using a different vowel can cause either one to be transliterated 'ayin.'  Sometimes the letter ayin is represented by (` ), especially when it is the first letter of a word.

An apostrophe ( ' ) is often used in place of the nikkud "sh'va" as under this alef ( אְ )  Although sometimes the sh'va is pronounced, I've chosen to do it this way.  Usually the sh'va, if pronounced, is a very short 'e'.

Many plurals may be found below for words ending in -im or -ot by doing a search on the page.

Most Greek names and a few other Greek words (e.g., charisma, koinōnia) are retained, transliterated.  (I've tried to differentiate between the Greek omichron [a short "o" as in not] and omega [a long "o" as in no] with the diacritical mark above omegas - ō).
The accents of Greek words/names are marked where obvious in the dictionaries.  Most others are probably accented on the first or second syllable.  Ex.: "tartaroō is not pronounced "TAR-ta-ru," but "tar-ta-RAH-oh."

In many cases where a word in the B'rit Chadashah is not translated, it's because a different Greek word is used.  E.g., "world" or "earth" is translated olam or aretz from ge (1093) - world, earth, land, ground - but not from oikoume (3625) - the inhabited earth.  "Pneuma" (4151) used for "wind" is translated "ruach" but "anemos" (417) (from which we get anemometer, a wind measuring device) is left as "wind."

Notes on words often misunderstood by many are noted in red.

Some modern words are given from the New Bantam-Megiddo Hebrew & English Dictionary (NBMHED).

`edah
(5712: congregation, assembly), from ya`ad (3259: to appoint; assemble, meet together).  Edah also has an affinity with `edut (5715: testimony).  Therefore, the `edah can be considered the 'witnessing body,' and is used here as the translation for ekklēsia (1577: ἐκκλησία; an assembly, congregation; church). RETURN
qahal
(6951: assembly, convocation) is used as translation for sunagoge (συναγωγή, synagoguē, 4864: a bringing together, by ext., an assembling).  A synagogue can be either an assembly or a meeting place (building).
"church" is not a translation but a transliteration of a form of the Greek word "kurios" (2962 - κύριος), lord, master. (Compare Scottish kirk.)

Qana-ite
Matt. 10:4 and Mark 3:18 (KJV) say "Canaanite", where the Grk is Kananitēs (in Matt.; Mark has -tēn), from 2581: Kananaios (Καναναίος), which Strong says means "zealous," but that the KJV translates as "Canaanite [by mistake for a der. from 5477]," Χαναάν, Chanaan.
Luke 6:15 says "Simon, the one called 'zealot'", Grk Zēlotēn, (Ζηλωτήν 2208);

Heb. 7065 - qana: to be jealous or zealous.  (‏קָנָא‎).
Would Yeshua have had a member of a goy that was supposed to have been destroyed to be one of his closest talmidim?
Or is it supposed to be - - -

The mystical implications given by the Targum in this short article on https://www.infoplease.com/encyclopedia/religion/judaism/info/shekinah should give Christians pause to consider whether its interpretations should be accepted.

Does your "rabbi" (lit. "my great one") (pastor, minister, priest, etc.) try to persuade you not to learn more about the Bible or spiritual things than he does so that he can maintain superiority over you?  Maybe he shouldn't be your rabbi.
The Babylonian Talmud Ta'anit 7A-1 says:
"Rav Nahman bar Isaac said: Why are the words of the Torah compared to a tree, as it is said:
'She [wisdom] is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her' (Proverbs 3:18)?  This is to tell you that, as a small log may set fire to a large log, so do the lesser scholars sharpen the wits of the greater.  And Rabbi Hanina said the same: Much have I learned from my masters, and more from any colleagues than from my masters, and from my disciples the most."

So you can see, that it is plain as day that we are to learn from our students just as they learn from us.
