CHAPTER 28

28:1  It happened ba-shanah ha-hi, b'reishit mamlekhet Tzidkiyah, melekh Y'hudah, ba-shanah four, ba-chodesh five, that Chananyah [Yah has favored] ben Azzur [he that assists], ha-navi, who was of Giv`on, spoke to me b'veit YHWH, in the presence of ha-kohanim v'khol ha`am, lemor2  "Koh amar YHWH Tsva'ot, Elohei Yisra'el, saying, 'I have broken the yoke of melekh Bavel3  Within two full years will I bring again into ha-maqom hazeh all the vessels of beit YHWH, that Nevukhadnetztzar melekh Bavel took away min-ha-maqom hazeh, and carried to Bavel4  and Yekonyah ben Y'hoyakim melekh Y'hudah and all the exiles of Y'hudah who went to Bavel I will bring back el-ha-maqom hazeh,' n'um YHWH, 'for I will break the yoke of melekh Bavel.'"

28:5  Vayomer Yirm'yah ha-navi el-Chananyah ha-navi in the presence of ha-kohanim, and in the presence of kol ha`am who stood b'veit YHWH6  vayomer Yirmyah ha-navi, "Amein: YHWH do so; YHWH perform your d'varim which you have prophesied, to bring again the vessels of beit YHWH, and all them of the captivity, mi-Bavel el-ha-maqom hazeh7  Nevertheless hear now ha-davar hazeh that I speak in your ears, and in the ears of kol ha`am8  Ha-n'vi'im who have been before me and before you of old prophesied against aratzot rabot v'al maml'khot g'dolot, of war, and of evil, and of pestilence.  9  Ha-navi who prophesies of shalom*, when d'var ha-navi shall happen, then shall ha-navi be known, that YHWH has sent him b'emet.

28:10  Then Chananyah ha-navi took the bar off the neck of Yirm'yah ha-navi and broke it.  11  Vayomer Chananyah in the presence of kol ha`am, lemor, "Koh amar YHWH: 'Even so will I break the yoke of Nevukhadnetztzar melekh Bavel within two full years from off the neck of kol ha-goyim.'" Yirm'yah ha-navi went his way.

28:12  Then was d'var YHWH el-Yirm'yahu acharei Chananyah ha-navi had broken the bar off of the neck of Yirm'yah ha-navi, lemor13  "Go, tell Chananyah, lemor, 'Koh amar YHWH: "You have broken the bars of wood; but you have made in their place bars of iron."  14  Ki koh amar YHWH Tsva'ot, Elohei Yisra'el: "I have put a yoke of iron on the neck of kol ha-goyim ha-eleh, that they may serve Nevukhadnetztzar melekh Bavel, and they shall serve him, and I have given him chayyot ha-sadeh also." '"  15  Vayomer Yirm'yah ha-navi el-Chananyah ha-navi, "Hear now, Chananyah: YHWH has not sent you, but you make ha`am hazeh to trust in a lie.  16  Therefore koh amar YHWH, 'Hinneh, I will send you me-al p'nei ha-adamah. Ha-shanah [this year] you shall die because you have spoken rebellion against YHWH.'"

28:17  So Chananyah ha-navi died ba-shanah ha-hi in the seventh month.

CHAPTER 29

29:1  Divrei ha-sefer asher shalach Yirm'yah ha-navi mi'Y'rushalaim to the elders of the captivity, v'el ha-kohanim, v'el-ha-n'vi'im v'el kol ha`am whom Nevukhadnetztzar had carried away captive mi'Y'rushalaim to Bavel2  after Yekhonyah ha-melekh, and the queen mother, and the eunuchs, sarei Y'hudah v'Y'rushalaim, and the craftsmen, and the smiths were departed mi'Y'irushalaim3  b'yad El`asah ben Shafan, u'G'maryah ben Chilkiyah, (whom Tzidkiyah melekh Y'hudah sent to Bavel el-Nevukhadnetztzar melekh Bavel), saying,  4  "Koh amar YHWH Tsva'ot, Elohei Yisra'el, to all the captivity, whom I have caused to be carried away captive mi'Y'rushalaim to Bavel5  'Build houses, and dwell in them, and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them.  6  Take wives, and father banim u'vanot; and take nashim for your banim, and give your banot to husbands that they may bear banim u'vanot, and multiply there, and don't be diminished.  7  Seek shalom* ha-ir where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to YHWH for it, for in the shalom of it you shall have shalom.'  8  "Ki koh amar YHWH Tsva'ot, Elohei Yisra'el: 'Don't let your nevi'im who are in the midst of you, and your diviners, deceive you, neither listen to your dreams which you cause to be dreamed.  9  For they prophesy falsely to you in my name. I have not sent them,' n'um YHWH.

29:10  Ki koh amar YHWH, 'After seventy years are accomplished for Bavel, I will visit you, and perform my d'var ha-tov toward you, in causing you to return el-ha-maqom hazeh11  For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,' n'um YHWH, 'thoughts of shalom, v'lo l'ra`ah, to give you tikvah in your latter end.  12  You shall call on me, and you shall go and pray to me, and I will listen to you.  13  You shall seek me, and find me, when you shall search for me with all your heart.  14  I will be found by you,' n'um YHWH, 'and I will turn again your captivity, and I will gather you mi-kol-ha-goyim u'mi-kol-ha-m'qomot where I have driven you,' n'um YHWH, 'and I will bring you again el-ha-maqom from where I caused you to be carried away captive.'

29:15  "Because you have said, 'YHWH has raised us up n'vi'im in Bavel,'  16  koh amar YHWH el-ha-melekh who sits el-kiseh David v'el-kol ha`am who dwell ba-ir hazot, your achim who haven't gone forth with you into captivity;  17  koh amar YHWH Tsva'ot; 'Hinneh, I will send on them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and will make them like vile figs that can't be eaten, they are so bad.  18  I will pursue after them with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence, and will deliver them to be tossed back and forth l'khol maml'khot ha-aretz, to be an object of horror, and an astonishment, and a hissing, and a reproach b'khol ha-goyim where I have driven them,  19  because they have not listened to my d'varim,' n'um YHWH, 'with which I sent to them my avadim ha-nevi'im, rising up early and sending them; but you would not hear,' n'um YHWH20  Hear therefore d'var YHWH, all you of the captivity, whom I have sent away mi'Y'rushalaim to Bavel. 21  "Koh amar YHWH Tsva'ot, Elohe Yisra'el, el-Ach'av ben Kolayah, v'el-Tzidkiyahu ben Ma`aseyah, who prophesy a lie to you in my name: 'Hinneh, I will deliver them b'yad Nevukhadretztzar, melekh Bavel, and he shall kill them before your eyes;  22  and of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captives of Y'hudah asher b'Vavel, saying, "YHWH make you like Tzidkiyahu and like Ach'av, who were roasted by melekh Bavel ba-esh23  because they have worked folly in Yisra'el, and have committed adultery with their neighbors' nashim, and have spoken a davar in my name falsely, which I didn't command them, and I am he who knows, and am witness, n'um YHWH.'"

29:24  V'el-Shemayah ha-Nechelami you shall speak, saying,  25  "Thus speaks YHWH Tsva'ot, Elohei Yisra'el, lemor, 'Because you have sent letters in your own name el-kol-ha`am asher b'Y'rushalaim, v'el-Tzefanyah ben Ma`aseyah ha-kohen, v'el-kol-ha-kohanim, lemor26  "YHWH has made you kohen in the place of Yehoyada ha-kohen, to be officers in beit YHWH l'khol ish m'shuggah, and prophesies, that you should put him in prison and in stocks.  27  Now therefore, why have you not rebuked Yirm'yahu ha-`Antoti, who prophesies to you,  28  because he has sent to us in Bavel, lemor, '(The captivity) will be long: build houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them?'" '"

29:29  Tz'fanyah ha-kohen read this letter in the ears of Yirm'yahu ha-navi30  Then came d'var YHWH el-Yirm'yahu, lemor31  "Send to all them of the captivity, saying, 'Koh amar YHWH el-Shemayah ha-Nechelami: "Because Shemayah has prophesied to you, and I didn't send him, and he has caused you to trust in a lie;"  32  therefore koh amar YHWH, "Hinneh, I will punish Shemayah ha-Nechelami, and his zera; he shall not have a man to dwell among ha`am hazeh, neither shall he see the good that I will do to my people," n'um YHWH, "because he has spoken rebellion against YHWH." '"

PEREQ ‏ל‎
CHAPTER 30

30:1  Ha-davar asher hayah el-Yirm'yahu me-et YHWH, lemor2  Koh amar YHWH, Elohei Yisra'el, lemor, Write kol-ha-d'varim that I have spoken to you el-sefer3  Ki hinneh, yamim ba'im, n'um YHWH, that I will turn again the captivity of ami Yisra'el vihudah, amar YHWH; and I will cause them to return el-aretz that I gave la-avotam, and they shall possess it.

30:4  V'eleh ha-d'varim asher diber YHWH el-Yisra'el v'el-Y'hudah.
5  Ki koh amar YHWH:
We have heard a voice of trembling,
of fear, v'ein shalom*.
6
Ask now, and see
whether a man can give birth.
Why do I see every man
with his hands on his loins, as a woman in travail,
and all faces are turned into paleness?
7  Hoy! ki gadol ha-yom ha-hu,
so that none is like it.
It is even the time of Ya'akov's trouble,
but he shall be saved out of it.
30:8  It shall happen ba-yom ha-hu, n'um YHWH Tsva'ot, that I will break his yoke off of your neck, and will burst your bonds, and strangers shall no more make him their bondservant,  9  but they shall serve YHWH Eloheihem v'et David malkam, whom I will raise up to them.
10  Therefore don't be afraid, Ya'akov my eved, n'um YHWH.
Neither be dismayed, Yisra'el,
ki hinneh
, I will save you from afar,
and your zera me-eretz of their captivity,
and Ya'akov shall return, and shall be quiet and at ease,
and none shall make him afraid.
11  For I am with you, n'um YHWH, to save you,
for I will make a full end of kol ha-goyim where I have scattered you,
but I will not destroy you completely;
but I will correct you in measure,
and will in no way leave you unpunished.
12  Ki koh amar YHWH,
Your hurt is incurable,
and your wound grievous.
13  There is none to plead your cause,
that you may be bound up.
You have no healing medicines.
14  All your lovers have forgotten you;
they don't seek you,
for I have wounded you with the wound of an enemy,
with the chastisement of a cruel one,
for the greatness of your iniquity,
because your sins were increased.
15  Why do you cry for your hurt?
Your pain is incurable:
because of the greatness of your iniquity,
because your sins were increased,
I have done these things to you.
16  Therefore all those who devour you shall be devoured,
and all your adversaries, every one of them, shall go into captivity,
and those who despoil you shall be a spoil,
and all who prey on you I will give for a prey.
17  For I will restore health to you,
and I will heal you of your wounds, n'um YHWH,
because they have called you an outcast, saying,
It is Tziyon, whom no man seeks after.
18  Koh amar YHWH:
Hinneh, I will turn again the captivity of ohalei Ya'akov
and have compassion on his dwelling places,
and the city shall be built on its own hill,
and the palace shall be inhabited after its own manner.
19  Out of them shall proceed thanksgiving
and the voice of those who make merry,
and I will multiply them, and they shall not be few.
I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small.
20  Their children also shall be as before,
and their congregation shall be established before me;
and I will punish all who oppress them.
21  Their prince shall be of themselves,
and their ruler shall proceed from the midst of them,
and I will cause him to draw near, and he shall approach me,
for who is he who has had boldness to approach me? n'um YHWH.
22  You shall be my people,
and I will be** your Elohim.
23  Behold, the tempest of YHWH!
Wrath is gone forth,
a sweeping tempest.
It shall burst on the head of the wicked.
24  The fierce anger of YHWH shall not return
until he has executed, and until he has performed
the intents of his heart.
B'acharit ha-yamim you shall understand it.

CHAPTER 31

31:1 (Heb. 30:25)  "At that time," n'um YHWH, "I will be** l'Elohim l'khol mishp'chot Yisra'el, and they shall be my people."  2 (Heb. 1)  Koh amar YHWH,
"The people who were left of the sword
found favor ba-midbar,
Yisra'el, when I went to cause him to rest."
3 (2)  YHWH appeared of old to me,
"Yes, I have loved you with an ahavat `olam.
Therefore with chesed have I drawn you.
4 (3)  "Again I will build you, and you shall be built,
Virgin of Yisra'el.
Again shall you be adorned with your timbrels,
and shall go forth in the dances of those who make merry.
5 (4)  "Again you shall plant vineyards
b'harei Shomron.
The planters shall plant,
and shall enjoy.
6 (5)  "For there shall be a day that the watchmen
b'har Efrayim shall cry,
'Arise, and let us go up to Tziyon
el-YHWH Eloheinu
.'"
7  Ki koh amar YHWH,
"Sing with gladness for Ya'akov,
and shout for the rosh ha-goyim:
publish, praise, and say,
'YHWH, save your people,
the remnant of Yisra'el.'
8  "Hinneh, I will bring them me-eretz of the north,
and gather them from the uttermost parts of aretz,
among them the blind and the lame,
the woman with child and she who travails with child together:
a qahal gadol they shall return here.
9  "They shall come with weeping,
and with supplications I will lead them.
I will cause them to walk by rivers of mayim
in a straight way in which they shall not stumble,
for I am l'Yisra'el l'av,
v'Efrayim
is my firstborn."
10  Hear d'var YHWH, goyim,
and declare it in the isles afar off,
and say, "He who scattered Yisra'el will gather him
and keep him as a shepherd does his flock."
11  For YHWH has ransomed Ya'akov,
and redeemed him from the hand of him who was stronger than he.
12  "They shall come and sing bim'rom Tziyon,
and shall flow el-tov YHWH,
to the grain, and to the new wine, and to the oil,
and to the young of the flock and of the herd,
and their nephesh shall be as a watered garden,
and they shall not sorrow any more at all.
13  "Then the virgin shall rejoice in the dance,
and the young men uz'qenim together;
for I will turn their mourning into joy,
and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.
14  "I will satiate nephesh ha-kohanim with fatness,
and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness," n'um YHWH.
15  Koh amar YHWH:
"Qol b'Ramah was heard,
lamentation, and bitter weeping,
Rachel [ewe] weeping `al-baneiha.
She refuses to be comforted `al-baneiha,
because they are no more."
16  Koh amar YHWH:
"Refrain your voice from weeping,
and your eyes from tears,
for your work shall be rewarded," n'um YHWH,
"and they shall come again me-eretz of the enemy.
17  "There is hope for your latter end," n'um YHWH,
"and banim shall come again to their own border.
18  "I have surely heard Efrayim bemoaning himself,
'You have chastised me, and I was chastised,
as an untrained calf.
Turn me, and I shall be turned,
for you are YHWH my Eloah.
19  'Surely after I was turned, I repented,
and after I was instructed, I struck on my thigh.
I was ashamed, yes, even confounded,
because I bore the reproach of my youth.'
20  "Is Efrayim my dear son?
Is he a darling child?
For as often as I speak against him,
I earnestly remember him still.
Therefore my heart yearns for him;
I will surely have mercy on him," n'um YHWH.
21  "Set up road signs,
make guideposts;
set your heart toward the highway,
derekh by which you went.
Turn again, virgin of Yisra'el,
turn again to these your cities.
22  "How long will you go here and there,
you backsliding daughter?
for YHWH has created a chadashah ba-aretz:
a woman shall encompass a man."
31:23  Koh amar YHWH Tsva'ot, Elohei Yisra'el, "Yet again shall they say ha-davar hazeh b'eretz Y'hudah and in the cities of it, when I shall bring again their captivity:
'YHWH bless you, habitation of tzedek, har ha-qodesh.'
24  "Y'hudah and all the cities of it shall dwell therein together, the farmers, and those who go about with flocks.  31:25  For I have satiated the weary nephesh, and every sorrowful nephesh have I replenished."

31:26  On this I awakened and saw, and my sleep was sweet to me.

31:27  "Hinneh, yamim ba-im," n'um YHWH, "that I will sow beit Yisra'el and beit Y'hudah (with) zera adam and zera b'hemah31:28  It shall happen that, as I have watched over them to pluck up and to break down and to overthrow and to destroy and to afflict, so will I watch over them to build and to plant," n'um YHWH.
29  "Ba-yamim hahem they shall say no more,
'The fathers have eaten sour grapes,
and the children's teeth are set on edge.'
30  "But everyone shall die for his own iniquity. Every man who eats the sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.

31:31  Hinneh, yamim ba-im," n'um YHWH, "that I will cut with beit Yisra'el and with beit Y'hudah b'rit chadashah,  31:32  not as ha-b'rit that I made with their avot ba-yom that I took them by the hand to bring them me-eretz Mitzrayim, which my b'rit they broke, although I was a ba'al to them," n'um YHWH31:33  "But zot ha-b'rit that I will make with beit Yisra'el acharei ha-yamim hahem," n'um YHWH: "I will put my Torah in their inward parts, and I will I write it in their heart; and I will be to them l'Elohim, and they shall be my people,  31:34  and they shall no more teach every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, 'Know YHWH;' for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest of them," n'um YHWH: "for I will forgive their iniquity, and their chet I will remember no more."
35  Koh amar YHWH,
who gives shemesh l'or yomam,,
chukkat
of the moon and kokhavim l'or lailah,
who stirs up ha-yam, so that the waves of it roar; YHWH Tsva'ot sh'mo:
31:36  "If ha-chukkim ha-eleh depart
from before me," n'um YHWH,
"then zera Yisra'el also shall cease
from being a goy l'fanai kol-ha-yamim."
37  Koh amar YHWH:
"If shamayim above can be measured,
and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath,
then I will also cast off kol-zera Yisra'el
for all that they have done," n'um YHWH.
31:38  "Hinneh, ha-yamim (ba-im)," n'um YHWH, "that ha-ir shall be built la-YHWH from the tower of Chanan'el to the gate of ha-pinnah39  The measuring line shall go out further straight onward to the hill Garev, and shall turn about to Go`ah40  The whole valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes and all the fields `ad-nachal Kidron `ad pinnah of the horse gate toward kedem shall be qodesh la-YHWH.  It shall not be plucked up nor thrown down od l`olam."

PEREQ ‏לב‎
CHAPTER 32

32:1  Ha-davar that came to Yirm'yahu from YHWH in the tenth year of Tzidkiyahu, melekh Y'hudah, which was the eighteenth year of N'vukhadretztzar.  2  Now at that time, the army of melekh Bavel was besieging Y'rushalaim; and Yirm'yahu ha-navi was shut up in the court of the guard, asher beit melekh Y'hudah.  3  For Tzidkiyahu, melekh Y'hudah, had shut him up, saying, "Why do you prophesy and say, 'Koh amar YHWH,  Hinneh, I will give ha-ir hazot b'yad melekh Bavel, and he shall take it;  4  v'Tzidkiyahu, melekh Y'hudah, shall not escape mi-yad ha-Kasdim, but shall surely be delivered b'yad melekh Bavel, and shall speak with him mouth to mouth, and his eyes shall see his eyes;  5  and he shall bring Tzidkiyahu to Bavel, and there shall he be until I visit him, n'um YHWH: though you fight with ha-Kasdim, you shall not prosper'?"

32:6  Vayomer Yirmyahu, D'var YHWH came to me, saying,  7  "Hinneh, Chanam'el ben Shallum your uncle shall come to you, saying, 'Buy for yourself my sadeh asher ba-`Anatot; for the right of redemption is yours to buy it.'"  8  So Chanam'el my uncle's son came to me in the court of the guard according to d'var YHWH, vayomer to me, Please buy my sadeh asher ba-`Anatot, asher b'eretz Binyamin; for the right of inheritance is yours, and the redemption is yours; buy it for yourself. Then I knew ki d'var YHWH hu.

32:9  I bought ha-sadeh from Chanam'el my uncle's son asher ba-`Anatot, and weighed him ha-kesef, seven sh'kalim and ten kesef.  10  I subscribed ha-sefer [deed], and sealed it, and called edim, and weighed him ha-kesef in the balances.  11  So I took ha-sefer of the purchase, both that which was sealed, containing the terms and conditions, and that which was open;  12  and I delivered ha-sefer of the purchase to Barukh ben Neriyah, ben Machseyah, in the eyes of Chanam'el my uncle's son, and in the presence of ha-edim who subscribed ha-sefer of the purchase, before all ha-Y'hudim who sat in the court of the guard.  13  I charged Barukh before them, lemor,  14  Koh amar YHWH tz'va'ot, Elohei Yisra'el: Take ha-s'pharim (of deeds) ha-eleh, sefer [deed] hazeh of the purchase which is sealed, and ha-sefer hazeh which is open, and put them in an earthen vessel; that they may continue yamim rabbim.  15  Ki koh amar YHWH tz'va'ot, Elohei Yisra'el: Batim v'sadot and vineyards shall yet again be bought ba-aretz hazot.

32:16  I prayed to YHWH acharei giving ha-sefer of the purchase to Barukh ben Neriyah, lemor17  Aha "Adonai YHVH! Hinneh, you have made ha-shamayim v-et ha-aretz by your great power and by your outstretched arm; there is nothing too hard for you,  18  who show chesed to thousands, and recompense the iniquity of the avot into the bosom of their banim after them; ha-El ha-Gadol, ha-Gibbor YHWH Tz'va'ot sh'mo;  19  great in counsel, and mighty in work; whose eyes are open on all the ways of b'nei adam, to give everyone according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:  20  who did set signs and wonders b'eretz Mitzrayim `ad ha-yom hazeh, both b'Yisra'el and among (other) adam; and made you shem ka-yom hazeh;  21  and did bring forth your people Yisra'el me-eretz Mitzrayim with otot and with wonders, and with a strong hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with great terror;  22  and gave them ha-aretz hazot, which you did swear la-avotam to give them, eretz flowing with milk and honey;  23  and they came in and possessed it, but they didn't obey your voice, neither walked in your torah; they have done nothing of all that you commanded them to do: therefore you have caused all this evil to come on them.  24  Hinneh, the mounds, they are come to the city to take it; and the city is given b'yad Kasdim who fight against it, because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the pestilence; and what you have spoken has happened; and, hinneh, you see it.  25  You have said to me, Adonai YHWH, Buy you ha-sadeh ba-kesef, and call edim; and yet the city is given b'yad Kasdim.

32:26  Va'y'hi d'var YHWH el-Yirm'yahu lemor; 27  "Hinneh, ani YHWH, Elohei kol basar: is there anything too hard for me?  28  Therefore, koh amar YHWH, Hinneh, I will give ha-ir hazot b'yad ha-Kasdim, uv'yad Nevukhadretztzar, melekh Bavel, and he shall take it:  29  and ha-Kasdim, who fight against ha-ir hazot, shall come and set ha-ir hazot ba-esh, and burn it, with ha-batim, on whose roofs they have offered incense la-Ba`al, and poured out n'sakhim lelohim acherim, to provoke me to anger.  30  Ki b'nei Yisra'el uv'nei Y'hudah have done only that which was evil in my sight from their youth; ki b'neiYisra'el have only provoked me to anger with ma'aseh y'deihem, n'um YHWH.  31  Ki ha-ir hazot has been to me a provocation of my anger and of my wrath min ha-yom that they built it ad ha-yom hazeh; that I should remove it from before my face,  32  because of all the evil of b'nei Yisra'el uv'nei Y'hudah asher asu to provoke me to anger, they, their malakhim, their sarim, their Kohanim, and their n'vi'im v'ish Y'hudah, and the inhabitants of Y'rushalaim.  33  They have turned to me the back, and not panim: and though I taught them, rising up early and teaching them, yet they have not listened to receive instruction.  34  But they set their abominations ba-bayit which is called by my name, to defile it.  35  They built the high places of Ba`al asher b'gei ben-Hinnom, to cause b'neihem v'et-b'noteihem to pass through (the fire) la-Molekh; which I didn't command them, neither did it come into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Y'hudah to sin.

32:36  "Now therefore koh amar YHWH, Elohei Yisra'el, el ha-ir hazot, whereof you say, 'It is given b'yad melekh Bavel by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence':  37  Hinneh, I will gather them mi-kol ha-artzot where I have driven them in my anger, and in my wrath, and in great indignation; and I will bring them again el ha-maqom hazeh, and I will cause them to dwell safely:  38  and they shall be my people, and I will be l'elohim:  39  and I will give them lev echad v'derekh echad, that they may fear me kol ha-yamim l'tov of them, and of their banim after them:  40  and I will cut a b'rit `olam with them, that I will not turn away from following them, to do them good; and I will put my fear in their hearts, that they may not depart from me.  41  Yes, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them ba-aretz hazot emet b'khol l'bi uv'khol nafshi.

32:42  "Ki khoh amar YHWH: Like as I have brought all this great evil al ha`am hazeh et kol ha-ra`ah ha-g'dolah hazot, so will I bring on them kol ha-tovah that I have promised them.  43  And ha-sadeh will be bought ba-aretz hazot that you say is desolate without adam uv'hemah; it is given b'yad ha-Kasdim.  44  Men shall buy fields for kesef and subscribe the deeds, and seal them, and call edim b'eretz Binyamin, and in the places about Y'rushalaim and in the cities of Y'hudah, and in the cities of ha-har, and in the cities of ha-sh'felah, and in the cities of ha-negev: for I will cause their captivity to return, n'um YHWH."

CHAPTER 33

33:1  Va'y'hi d'var YHWH el-Yirm'yahu the second time, while he was yet shut up in the court of the guard, lemor,  2  Koh amar YHWH who makes (it)7, YHWH who forms it to establish it; YHWH sh'mo:  3  Call to me, and I will answer you, and will show you great things, and difficult, which you don't know.  4  Ki koh amar YHWH, Elohei Yisra'el, al batei ha-ir hazot v'al batei malkhei Y'hudah, which are broken down (to make a defense) against the mounds and against the sword;  5  while (men) come to fight with ha-Kasdim, and to fill them with the dead bodies of men, whom I have killed in my anger and in my wrath, and for all whose wickedness I have hid my face me-ha-ir hazot:  6  Hinneh, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them; and I will reveal to them abundance of shalom ve-emet.  7  I will cause the captivity of Y'hudah and the captivity of Yisra'el to return, and will build them, as at ha-rishon.  8  I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned against me, and whereby they have transgressed against me.  9  (This city) shall be to me for a name of joy, for a praise and for a glory, before kol goyei ha-aretz, which shall hear kol ha-tovah asher anochi oseh to them, and shall fear and tremble `al kol-ha-tovah v`al kol-ha-shalom asher anochi `oseh to it.

33:10  Koh amar YHWH: Od yishama ba-maqom hazeh, whereof you say, It is waste, me-ein adam u'me-ein b'hemah, in the cities of Y'hudah, and in the streets of Y'rushalaim, that are desolate, me-ein adam u'me-ein inhabitant u'me-ein b'hemah,  11  kol sason v'kol simcha, kol chatan v'kol kalah, the voice of those who say,
Hodu et-YHWH Tz'va'ot,

(and of them) who bring (sacrifices of) todah beit YHWH.  For I will cause the captivity of ha-aretz to return as at ha-rishonah, amar YHWH.

33:12  Koh amar YHWH Tz'va'ot: Yet again shall there be ba-maqom hazeh, which is waste, me-ein adam v`ad b'hemah, and in all the cities of it, a habitation of ro'im causing their flocks to lie down.  13  B'arei ha-har, b'arei ha-sh'felah uv'arei ha-negev, uv'eretz Binyamin, and around Yerushalaim, uv'arei Y'hudah shall the flocks again pass under the hands of him who numbers them, amar YHWH.

33:14  Hinneh, yamim ba'im, n'um YHWH, that I will perform ha-davar ha-tov which I have spoken el-beit Yisra'el v`al-beit Y'hudah.  15  Ba-yamim hahem and at that time will I cause to grow up l'David tzemach tz'dakah v'asah mishpat utz'dakah ba-aretz.  16  Ba-yamim hahem shall Y'hudah be saved, and Yerushalaim shall dwell safely; and this is (the name) whereby she shall be called: YHWH Tzidkenu.

33:17  Ki khoh amar YHWH: David shall never want a man to sit `al-kiseh Yisra'el;  18  V'la-kohanim ha-L'viyyim shall not want a man before me to offer olah, and to burn minchah v'oseh zevach kol ha-yamim.

33:19  Va'y'hi d'var YHWH el-Yirm'yahu lemor,  20  "Koh amar YHWH: If you can break b'riti ha-yom v'et b'riti ha-lailah, so that there shall not be yomam va-lailah in their season;  21  then may also b'riti be broken with David avdi, that he shall not have a son to reign `al-kiso; and with ha-L'viyyim ha-Kohanim, my ministers.  22  As the host of ha-shamayim can't be numbered, neither the sand of ha-yam measured; so will I multiply zera David avdi, v'ha-L'viyyim who minister to me.

33:23  Va'y'hi d'var YHWH el-Yirm'yahu, lemor,  24  Don't you consider what ha`am hazeh has spoken, lemor, The two mishpachot which YHWH chose, he has cast them off? thus do they despise ami, that they should be no more a goy before them.  25  Koh amar YHWH: If b'riti yomam va-lailah fails, if I have not appointed the ordinances of shamayim va-aretz; 26  gam zera Ya'akov v'David avdei will I also cast away, so that I will not take of zaro to be rulers el-zera Avraham, Yischak,8 and Ya`akov: for I will cause their captivity to return, and will have mercy on them.

CHAPTER 34

34:1  Ha-davar asher hayah el-Yirm'yahu me-et YHWH, when Nevukhadnetztzar was melekh Bavel, and all his army, and all the kingdoms of ha-aretz that were under his dominion, and all ha`amim were fighting against Yerushalaim, and against all the cities of it, lemor:  2  "Koh amar YHWH, Elohei Yisra'el, Go and speak to Tzidkiyahu, melekh Y'hudah, and tell him, 'Koh amar YHWH, 'Hinneh, I will give ha-ir hazot b'yad melekh Bavel, and he shall burn it ba-esh:  3  and you shall not escape mi-yado, but shall surely be taken, and delivered b'yado; and your eyes shall see the eyes of melekh Bavel, and he shall speak with you mouth to mouth, and you shall go to Bavel.  4  Yet sh'ma d'var YHWH, Tzidkiyahu, melekh Y'hudah: koh amar YHWH concerning you: You shall not die by the sword;  5  B'shalom; and with the burnings of avoteikha, ha-malakhim ha-rishonim who were before you, so shall they make a burning for you; and they shall lament you, (saying), Hoy, Adon! ki ha-davar I have spoken, n'um YHWH.

34:6  Vaidaber Yirm'yahu ha-navi el-Tzidkiyahu, melekh Y'hudah et kol-ha-d'varim ha-eleh birushalaim,  7  and the army of melekh Bavel was fighting el-Yerushalaim v'al kol arei Y'hudah that were left, el-Lakhish v'el `Azeka; for these (alone) remained of the fortified `arei Y'hudah.

34:8  Ha-davar asher hayah el-Yirm'yahu me-et YHWH, acharei karot ha-melekh Tzidkiyahu b'rit et-kol ha`am asher birushalaim, to proclaim liberty to them;  9  that every man should let his eved, and every man his maid-servant, who is an Ivri or an Ivriyah, go free; that none should make bondservants of them, (that is), of a Yehudi his brother.  10  Kol ha-sarim v'khol ha`am who heard and obeyed, who had entered into ha-b'rit, that everyone should let his eved and everyone his maid-servant go free, that none should make bondservants of them any more; they obeyed, and let them go:  11  but afterwards they turned, and caused ha-avadim and the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for avadim and for handmaids.  12  Va'y'hi d'var YHWH el-Yirm'yahu me-et YHWH, lemor,  13  Koh amar YHWH, Elohei Yisra'el: anochi karati v'rit et-avoteikhem b'yom that I brought them forth me-eretz Mitzrayim, mi-beit avadim, lemor,  14  At the end of sheva shanim you shall let go ish et achiv ha-Ivri, who has been sold to you, and has served you shesh shanim, you shall let him go free from you: but avoteikhem didn't listen to me, neither inclined their ear.  15  You were now turned, and had done that which is right in my eyes, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbor; and you had cut a b'rit l'fanai ba-bayit which is called by my name:  16  but you turned and profaned my name, and caused ish et-avdo v'ish his handmaid, whom you had let go free at their pleasure, to return; and you brought them into subjection, to be to you for avadim and for handmaids.  17  Therefore koh amar YHWH: you have not listened to me, to proclaim liberty, ish l'achiv v'ish to his neighbor: hinneh, I proclaim to you a liberty, n'um YHWH, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be tossed back and forth among kol ha-maml'khot ha-aretz.  18  I will give ha-anashim who have transgressed b'riti, who have not performed divrei ha-b'rit which they made before me, when they cut the calf in two and passed between the parts of it;  19  sarei Y'hudah v'sarei Y'rushalaim, the eunuchs, v'ha-Kohanim, v'khol am ha-aretz, who passed between the parts of the calf;  20  I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those who seek their life; and their dead bodies shall be for food to the birds of ha-shamayim, ul'vehemat ha-aretz.  21  Tzidkiyahu, melekh Y'hudah and his sarim will I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those who seek their life, and into the hand of the army of melekh Bavel, who have gone away from you.  22  Hinneh, I will command, n'um YHWH, and cause them to return el ha-ir hazot; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it ba-esh: and I will make arei Y'hudah a desolation, without inhabitant.

CHAPTER 35

35:1  Ha-davar asher hayah el-Yirm'yahu me-et YHWH bimei Y'hoyakim ben Yoshiyahu, melekh Y'hudah, lemor,  2  Go el-beit ha-Rekhavim, and speak to them, and bring them into beit YHWH, into one of the chambers, and give them yayin to drink.  3  Then I took Ya`azanyah ben Yirm'yahu, ben Chavatztzinyah, v'et-achav v'et-kol banav v'et kol-beit ha-Rekhavim;  4  and I brought them into beit YHWH, into the chamber of b'nei Chanan ben Yigdalyahu, ish ha-Elohim, which was by the chamber of ha-sarim, which was above the chamber of Ma`aseyahu ben Shallum, the keeper of the threshold.  5  I set lifnei b'nei beit ha-Rekhavim bowls full of yayin, and cups; and I said to them, Drink you yayin.  6  But they said, We will drink no yayin; ki Y'honadav ben Rechav avinu, commanded us, saying, You shall drink no yayin, neither you, nor b'neikhem `ad`olam:  7  neither shall you build bayit, nor sow zera, nor plant kerem, nor have any for you; but kol y'meikhem you shall dwell in ohalim; that you may live yamim rabim `al-p'nei ha-adamah in which you sojourn.  8  We have obeyed qol Y'honadav ben Rechav avinu in all that he charged us, to drink no yayin kol yameinu, anachnu, our wives, baneinu, and our daughters;  9  nor to build houses for us to dwell in; neither have we kerem v'sadeh va'zera:  10  but we have lived in ohalim, and have obeyed, and done according to all that Y'honadav avinu commanded us.  11  But it happened, when Nevukhadretztzar, melekh Bavel came up el-ha-aretz, that we said, Come, and let us go to Yerushalaim for fear of the army of ha-Kasdim, and for fear of the army of Aram; so we dwell birushalaim.

35:12  Va'y'hi d'var YHWH el-Yirm'yahu, lemor,  13  Koh amar YHWH Tz'va'ot, Elohei Yisra'el: Go, and tell l'ish Y'hudah and the inhabitants of Yerushalaim, Will you not receive instruction to listen to d'varai? n'um YHWH.  14  Divrei Y'honadav ben Rechav, that he commanded his sons, not to drink yayin, are performed; and ad ha-yom hazeh they drink none, for they obey mitzvat avihem: but I have spoken to you, rising up early and speaking; and you have not listened to me.  15  I have sent also to you kol avadai, ha-n'vi'im, rising up early and sending them, saying, Return you now every man from his derekh ha-ra`ah, and amend your ways, and don't go after elohim acherim to serve them, and you shall dwell el-ha-adamah which I have given to you and to avoteikhem: but you have not inclined your ear, nor listened to me.  16  Because b'nei Y'honadav ben Rechav have performed mitzvat avihem which he commanded them, but ha`am hazeh has not listened to me;  17  therefore koh amar YHWH, Elohei Tz'va'ot, Elohei Yisra'el: Hinneh, I will bring on Y'hudah v'el kol the inhabitants of Yerushalaim kol ha-ra`ah that I have pronounced against them; because I have spoken to them, but they have not heard; and I have called to them, but they have not answered.

35:18  Yirm'yahu said to beit ha-Rechavim, Koh amar YHWH Tz'va'ot, Elohei Yisra'el: Because you have obeyed `al-mitzvot Y'honadav avikhem, and kept kol mitzvotav,;  19  therefore koh amar YHWH Tz'va'ot, Elohei Yisra'el: there shall not be wanting ish l'Yonadav ben Rechav to stand l'fanai kol ha-yamim.

CHAPTER 36

36:1  Va'y'hi ba-shanah ha-r'vi'it li'Y'hoyakim ben Yoshiyahu, melekh Y'hudah, haya ha-davar hazeh el-Yirm'yahu me-et YHWH, lemor,  2  Take m'gillat-sefer, and write therein kol ha-d'varim that I have spoken to you `al-Yisra'el, v`al-Y'hudah, v`al kol ha-goyim mi-yom that I spoke to you, mi-y'mei Yoshiyahu v`ad ha-yom hazeh.  3  It may be that beit Y'hudah will hear kol ha-ra`ah which I purpose to do to them; that they may return every man from his derekh ha-ra`ah; that I may forgive their iniquity and their chet.

36:4  Then Yirm'yahu called Barukh ben Neriyah; and Barukh wrote mi-pi Yirm'yahu et kol divrei YHWH, which he had spoken to him, `al-m'gillat sefer.  5  Yirm'yahu commanded Barukh, lemor, I am shut up; I can't go into beit YHWH:  6  therefore go you, and read ba-m'gillah which you have written from my mouth, divrei YHWH in the ears of ha`am beit YHWH b'yom on the fast-day; and also you shall read them in the ears of kol Y'hudah who come out of their cities.  7  It may be they will present their supplication lifnei YHWH, and will return everyone from his derekh ha-ra`ah; for great is the anger and the wrath that YHWH has pronounced el-ha`am hazeh.  8  Barukh ben Neriyah did according to all that Yirm'yahu ha-navi commanded him, reading ba-sefer divrei YHWH beit YHWH.

36:9  Va'y'hi ba-shanah ha-chamishit lihoyakim ben Yoshiyahu, melekh Y'hudah, in the ninth month, that fast was called lifneh YHWH kol ha`am birushalam, v'khol ha`am who came from the cities of Y'hudah birushalaim.  10  Then read Barukh ba-sefer et divrei Yirm'yahu beit YHWH, in the chamber of G'maryahu ven Shafan, ha-Sofer, in the upper court, at the entry of the new gate of beit YHWH, in the ears of kol ha`am.

36:11  When Mikhaihu ben Gemaryahu, ben Shafan, had heard kol divrei YHWH me-al ha-sefer,  12  he went down into beit ha-melekh into the chamber of ha-Sofer: v'hinneh, sham kol ha sarim were sitting, (that is), Elishama ha-Sofer, u'D'layahu ben Sh'mayahu v'Elnatan ben `Akhbor u'G'maryahu ven Shafan v'Tzidkiyahu ven Chananyahu v'kol ha-sarim.  13  Then Mikhayhu declared to them kol ha-d'varim that he had heard, when Barukh read ha-sefer in the ears of ha`am.  14  Therefore kol ha-sarim sent Yehudi ben N'tanyahu ben Shelemyahu ben Kushi el-Barukh, lemor, Ha-m'gillah from which you have read in the ears of ha`am, take it b'yadkha and come.  So Barukh ben Neriyahu took ha-m'gillah b'yado, and came to them.  15  They said to him, Sit down now, and read it in our ears.  So Barukh read it in their ears.  16  Va'y'hi, when they had heard kol ha-d'varim, they turned in fear one toward another, and said to Barukh, We will surely tell l'melekh et-kol ha-d'varim ha-eleh.  17  V'et Barukh sha'alu, lemor, Tell us now, How did you write kol ha-d'varim ha-eleh mi-piv?  18  Vayomer Barukh to them, From his mouth, he pronounced to me kol ha-d'varim ha-eleh va-ani kotev `al-ha-sefer with ink.  19  Vayomer ha-sarim el-Barukh, Go, hide you, attah v'Yirm'yahu; and let no man know where you are.

36:20  They went to the courtyard of ha-melekh and had laid up ha-m'gillah in the chamber of Elishama ha-Sofer; and they told kol ha-d'varim in the ears of ha-melekh.  21  Ha-melekh sent Yehudi to get ha-m'gillah; and he took it out of the chamber of Elishama ha-Sofer, and Yehudi read it in the ears of ha-melekh, and in the ears kol ha-sarim who stood beside ha-melekh.  22  Ha-melekh was sitting in the winter-house in the ninth month: and the brazier was burning before him.  23  Va'y'hi, when Yehudi had read three or four leaves, that (the king) cut it with the razor, and cast it el-ha-esh that was in the brazier, until kol ha-m'gillah was consumed ba-esh that was in the brazier.  24  They were not afraid, nor tore their garments, neither ha-melekh v'kol avadav who heard kol ha-d'varim ha-eleh.  25  V'gam Elnatan u'D'layahu u'G'maryahu had made intercession to ha-melekh that he would not burn ha-m'gillah; but he would not hear them.  26  Ha-melekh commanded Y'rachme'el ben ha-melekh v'et S'rayahu ben `Azri'el v'et Shelemyahu ben `Avde'el to take Barukh ha-Sofer v'et Yirm'yahu ha-navi; but YHWH hid them.

36:27  Va'y'hi d'var YHWH el-Yirm'yahu, after that ha-melekh had burned ha-m'gillah, and ha-d'varim which Barukh wrote mi-pi Yirm'yahu, lemor,  28  Take again m'gillah acheret, and write in it kol ha-d'varim ha-rishonim that were in ha-m'gillah ha-rishonah, which Y'hoyakim melekh Y'hudah has burned.  29  V'al Y'hoyakim, melekh Y'hudah you shall say, Koh amar YHWH: You have burned ha-m'gillah hazot, lemor, Why have you written therein, lemor, Ha-melekh Bavel shall certainly come and destroy ha-aretz hazot, and shall cause to cease from there adam uv'hemah?  30  Therefore koh amar YHWH `al-Y'hoyakim, melekh Y'hudah: He shall have none to sit `al-kiseh David; and his dead body shall be cast out ba-yom to the heat, and ba-lailah to the frost.  31  I will punish him and his zera and his `avadim for their iniquity; and I will bring on them, and on the inhabitants of Yerushalaim, v'el ish Y'hudah, kol ha-ra`ah that I have pronounced against them, but they didn't listen.

36:32  Then Yirm'yahu took m'gillah acheret and gave it to Barukh ben Neriyahu, ha-Sofer, who wrote therein mi-pi Yirm'yahu et kol divrei ha-sefer asher Y'hoyakim, melekh Y'hudah had burned ba-esh; and there were added besides to them d'varim rabim like them.

37:1  Tzidkiyahu ben Yoshiyahu reigned as melekh instead of Konyahu ben Y'hoyakim, asher Nevukhadretztzar melekh Bavel made melekh b'eretz Y'hudah.  2  But neither he nor avadav nor am ha-aretz listened to divrei YHWH asher diber b'yad Yirm'yahu ha-navi.

37:3  Tzidkiyahu ha-melekh sent Y'hukhal ben Shelemyah v'et Tzefanyahu ben Ma`aseyah ha-Kohen el-Yirmyahu ha-navi lemor, Pray now to YHWH Eloheinu for us.  4  Now Yirm'yahu came in and went out among ha`am; for they had not put him into prison.  5  The army of Par`oh had come mi-Mitzrayim; and when ha-Kasdim who were besieging Yerushalaim heard news of them, they broke up from Yerushalaim.

37:6  Va'y'hi d'var YHWH el-Yirm'yahu ha-navi, lemor,  7  Koh amar YHWH, Elohei Yisra'el, Say this el-melekh Y'hudah, who sent you to me to inquire of me: Hinneh, the army of Par`oh, which came forth to help you, shall return to Mitzrayim into their own land.  8  Ha-Kasdim shall come again, and fight against ha-ir hazeh; and they shall take it, and burn it ba-esh.  9  Koh amar YHWH, Don't deceive yourselves, saying, Ha-Kasdim shall surely depart from us; for they shall not depart.  10  For though you had struck the whole army of ha-Kasdim who fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet would they rise up every man in his tent, and burn ha-ir hazeh ba-esh.

37:11  Va'y'hi that, when the army of ha-Kasdim was broken up me-al Yerushalaim for fear of the army of Par`oh,  12  then Yirm'yahu went forth me-Yerushalaim to go into eretz Binyamin, to receive his portion there, in the midst of ha`am.  13  Va'y'hi when he was in the gate of Binyamin, a captain of the guard was there, whose name was Yir'iyyah, ben Shelemyah, ben Chananyah; and he laid hold on Yirm'yahu ha-navi, lemor, You are falling away to ha-Kasdim.  14  Vayomer Yirm'yahu, It is false; I am not falling away to ha-Kasdim.  But he didn't listen to him; so Yir'iyyah laid hold on Yirm'yahu, and brought him el-ha-sarim.  15  Ha-sarim were angry with Yirm'yahu, and struck him, and put him in prison in beit Y'honatan ha-Sofer; for they had made that the prison.

37:16  When Yirm'yahu was come into the dungeon-house, and into the cells, and Yirm'yahu had remained there yamim rabbim;  17  Then Tzidkiyahu ha-melekh sent, and fetched him: and ha-melekh asked him secretly b'veito vayomer, Is there davar me-et YHWH?  Vayomer Yirm'yahu, There is.  vayomer, B'yad melekh Bavel, you shall be delivered.  18  Vayomer Yirm'yahu el-ha-melekh Tzidkiyahu, Wherein have I sinned against you, or against your avadim v'la-am ha-zeh, that you have put me in prison?  19  Where now are your n'vi'im who prophesied to you, saying, Melekh Bavel shall not come against you, nor against ha-aretz hazot?  20  Now please hear, adoni ha-melekh: please let my supplication be presented before you, that you not cause me to return to beit Yonatan ha-Sofer, lest I die there.  21  Then Tzidkiyahu ha-melekh gave orders, and they committed Yirm'yahu into the court of the guard; and they gave him a loaf of lechem la-yom out of the bakers' street, until kol ha-lechem min ha-ir was spent.  Thus Yirm'yahu remained in the court of the guard.

38:7  Now when `Eved-Melekh ha-Kushi, ish saris, v'hu b'veit ha-melekh, heard that they had put Yirm'yahu in the dungeon (v'ha-melekh then sitting in the gate of Binyamin,)  8  `Eved-Melekh went forth mi-beit ha-melekh, and spoke el-ha-melekh, lemor,  9  Adoni ha-melekh, ha-anashim ha-eleh have done evil in all that they have done to Yirm'yahu ha-navi, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is likely to die in the place where he is, because of the famine; ki ein ha-lekhem od ba-ir.  10  Then ha-melekh commanded `Eved-Melekh ha-Kushi, lemor, Take from hence thirty anashim with you, and take up Yirm'yahu ha-navi out of the dungeon, before he die.  11  So `Eved-Melekh took ha-anashim with him, and went into beit ha-melekh under the treasury, and took there rags and worn-out garments, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Yirm'yahu.  12  Vayomer `Eved-Melekh ha-Kushi el-Yirm'yahu, Put now these rags and worn-out garments under your armholes under the cords, v'Yirm'yahu did so.  13  So they drew up Yirm'yahu with the cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Yirm'yahu remained in the court of the guard.

38:14  Then Tzidkiyahu ha-melekh sent, and took Yirm'yahu ha-navi to him into the third entry asher b'veit YHWH: vayomer ha-melekh el-Yirm'yahu, I will ask you a thing; hide nothing from me.  15  Vayomer Yirm'yahu el-Tzidkiyahu, If I declare it to you, will you not surely put me to death?  and if I give you counsel, you will not listen to me.  16  V'Tzidkiyahu ha-melekh swore secretly el-Yirm'yahu, lemor, Chai YHWH, et asher asah to us ha-nefesh hazot, I will not put you to death, neither will I give you b'yad ha-anashim ha-eleh who seek your nefesh.

38:17  Vayomer Yirm'yahu el-Tzidkiyahu, Koh amar YHWH, Elohei Tzva'ot, Elohei Yisra'el: If you will go forth el-sarei melekh Bavel, then your nefesh shall live, v'ha-ir hazot shall not be burned ba-esh; and you shall live, u'veitekha.  18  But if you will not go forth el-sarei melekh Bavel, then shall ha-ir hazot be given b'yad ha-Kasdim, and they shall burn it ba-esh, and you shall not escape out of their hand.  19  Vayomer ha-melekh Tzidkiyahu el-Yirm'yahu, I am afraid of ha-Y'hudim who are fallen away el-ha-Kasdim, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.  20  Vayomer Yirm'yahu, They shall not deliver you.  Obey, I beg you, b'qol YHWH, in that which I speak to you: so it shall be well with you, and your nefesh shall live.  21  But if you refuse to go forth, zeh ha-davar asher YHWH has shown me:  22  V'hinneh, khol ha-nashim who are left b'veit melekh Y'hudah shall be brought forth el-sarei melekh Bavel, and those (women) shall say,
Your familiar friends have set you on,
and have prevailed over you:
(now that) your feet are sunk in the mire,
they are turned away back.
23  They shall bring out all your nashim and your banim el-ha-Kasdim; and you shall not escape out of their hand, but shall be taken b'yad melekh Bavel: and you shall cause ha-ir hazot to be burned ba-esh.

38:24  Vayomer Tzidkiyahu el-Yirm'yahu, Let no man know ba-d'varim ha-eleh, and you shall not die.  25  But if ha-sarim hear that I have talked with you, and they come to you, and tell you, Declare to us now what you have said to ha-melekh; don't hide it from us, and we will not put you to death; also what ha-melekh said to you:  26  then you shall tell them, I presented my supplication before ha-melekh, that he would not cause me to return to beit Yonatan, to die there.  27  Then came kol ha-sarim el-Yirm'yahu, and asked him; and he told them according to kol ha-d'varim ha-eleh that ha-melekh had commanded.  So they left off speaking with him; for ha-davar was not perceived.  28  So Yirm'yahu abode in the court of the guard ad yom asher Yerushalaim was taken.  And it was (that he was there) when Yerushalaim was taken,

CHAPTER 39

39:1  In the ninth year of Tzidkiyahu melekh Y'hudah, in the tenth month, came Nevukhadretztzar, melekh Bavel and all his army against Y'rushalaim, and besieged it;  2  in the eleventh year of Tzidkiyahu, in the fourth month, the ninth day of the month, a breach was made in ha-ir,  3  that kol sarei melekh Bavel came in, and sat in the middle gate, (to wit), Nergal-Sar'etzer, Samgar-Nevu, Sarsekhim, Rav-Saris, Nergal-Sar'etzer Rav-Mag, with all the rest of sarei melekh Bavel.  4  Va'y'hi, when Tzidkiyahu melekh Y'hudah v'khol anshei of war saw them, then they fled, and went forth by lailah min ha-ir, derekh gan ha-melekh, through the gate between the two walls; and he went out derekh ha-`Aravah.  5  But the army of Kasdim pursued after them, and overtook Tzidkiyahu in the plains of Y'recho: and when they had taken him, they brought him up to Nevukhadretztzar, melekh Bavel to Rivlah b'eretz Chamat; and he gave judgment on him.  6  Then melekh Bavel killed b'nei Tzidkiyahu b'Rivlah before his eyes: also melekh Bavel killed all the nobles of Y'hudah.  7  Moreover he put out the eyes of Tzidkiyahu, and bound him in fetters, to carry him to Bavel.  8  Ha-Kasdim burned beit ha-melekh v'et beit ha`am ba-esh, and broke down the walls of Yerushalaim.  9  Then Nevuzar'adan the captain of the guard carried away captive into Bavel the residue of the people who remained ba-ir, the deserters also who fell away to him, and the residue of the people who remained.  10  But Nevuzar'adan the captain of the guard left of the poor of the people, who had nothing, b'eretz Y'hudah, and gave them vineyards and fields ba-yom ha-hu.

39:11  Now Nevukhadretztzar melekh Bavel gave charge concerning Yirm'yahu b'yad Nevuzar'adan the captain of the guard, saying,  12  Take him, and look well to him, and do him no harm; but do to him even as he shall tell you.  13  So Nevuzar'adan the captain of the guard sent, and Nevushazban, Rav-Saris, v'Nergal-Sar'etzer Rav-Mag, and all the chief officers of melekh Bavel;  14  they sent, and took Yirm'yahu out of the court of the guard, and committed him to G'dalyahu ben Achikam, ben Shafan, that he should carry him home: so he lived among ha`am.

39:15  And to Yirm'yahu came d'var YHWH while he was shut up in the court of the guard, saying,   16  Go, and speak to `Eved-Melekh ha-Kushi, lemor, Koh amar YHWH Tz'va'ot, Elohei Yisra'el: Hinneh, I will bring my d'varim el-ha-ir hazot l'ra'ah, v'lo l'tovah; and they shall be accomplished before you ba-yom ha-hu.  17  But I will deliver you ba-yom ha-hu, n'um YHWH; and you shall not be given b'yad ha-anashim of whom you are afraid.  18  For I will surely save you, and you shall not fall by the sword, but your life shall be for a prey to you; because you have put your trust in me, n'um YHWH.

CHAPTER 40

40:1  Ha-davar asher hayah el-Yirm'yahu me-et YHWH, after that Nevuzar'adan, captain of the guard, had let him go min-ha-Ramah, when he had taken him being bound in chains among all the captives of Yerushalaim v'Y'hudah, who were carried away captive to Bavel.  2  The captain of the guard took Yirm'yahu, vayomer to him, YHWH Eloheikha pronounced ha-ra`ah hazot el-maqom hazeh;  3  and YHWH has brought it, and done according as he spoke: because you have sinned against YHWH, and have not obeyed his voice, therefore ha-daber hazeh is come on you.  4  Now, hinneh, I loose you this day from the chains which are on your hand.  If it seem good to you to come with me to Bavel, come, and I will look well to you; but if it seem ill to you to come with me to Bavel, forbear: see, kol ha-aretz is before you; where it seems good and right to you to go, there go.  5  Now while he was not yet gone back, Go back then, (said he), to G'dalyah ben Achikam, ben Shafan, whom melekh Bavel has made governor over the cities of Y'hudah, and dwell with him among ha`am; or go wherever it seems right to you to go.  So the captain of the guard gave him victuals and a present, and let him go.  6  Va-yavo Yirm'yahu el-G'dalyah ben Achikam to Mitzpeh, and lived with him among ha`am who were left ba-aretz.

40:7  Now when all the captains of the forces who were ba-sadeh, even they and their men, heard that melekh Bavel had made G'dalyahu ben Achikam governor in the land, and had committed to him anashim v'nashim and children, and of the poorest of ha-aretz, of those who were not carried away captive to Bavel;  8  then they came to G'dalyah to Mitzpeh, (to wit), Yishma'el ben N'tanyahu, v'Yochanan v'Yonatan b'nei Kareach, u'S'rayah ben Tanchumet, u'v'nei `Ofai ha-N'tofati, vi'z'yahu ben ha-Ma`akhati, they and their anashim.  9  G'dalyahu ben Achikam ben Shafan swore to them and to their anashim, lemor, Don't be afraid to serve ha-Kasdim: dwell ba-aretz, and serve melekh Bavel, and it shall be well with you.  10  Va-ani, hinneh, I will dwell ba-Mitzpah, to stand lifnei ha-Kasdim who shall come to us: v'attem, gather yayin and summer fruits v'shemen, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that you have taken.  11  v'gam kol ha-Y'hudim asher b'Moav and among b'nei `Ammon, and in Edom, and who were in all the countries, heard that melekh Bavel had left a remnant of Y'hudah, and that he had set over them G'dalyahu ben Achikam, ben Shafan;  12  then kol ha-Y'hudim returned mi-kol ha-m'komot where they were driven, and came to eretz Y'hudah, el-G'dalyahu, to Mitzpah, and gathered yayin and summer fruits in abundance.

40:13  v'Yochanan ben Kareach, and all the captains of the forces who were ba-sadeh, came el-G'dalyahu to Mitzpah,  14  and said to him, Do you know that Baalis melekh b'nei `Ammon has sent Yishma'el ben Netanyah to take your nefesh?  But G'dalyahu ben Achikam didn't believe them.  15  V'Yochanan ben Kareach spoke to G'dalyahu ba-Mitzpah secretly, saying, Please let me go, and I will kill Yishma'el ben Netanyah, and no man shall know it: why should he take your nefesh, that kol Y'hudah who are gathered to you should be scattered, and the remnant of Y'hudah perish?  16  Vayomer G'dalyahu ben Achikam el-Yochanan ben Kareach, You shall not do ha-davar hazeh; for you speak falsely of Yishma'el.

CHAPTER 41

41:1  Va'y'hi ba-chodesh ha-sh'vi'i, that Yishma'el ben Netanyah, ben Elishama mi-zera royal and (one of) the chief officers of ha-melekh, and ten anashim with him, came to G'dalyahu ben Achikam to Mitzpah; and there they ate lechem together ba-Mitzpah.  2  Then arose Yishma'el ben Netanyah, and the ten anashim who were with him, and struck G'dalyahu ben Achikam ben Shafan with the sword, and killed him whom melekh Bavel had made governor over ha-aretz.  3  Yishma'el also killed kol ha-Y'hudim who were with him, (to wit), with G'dalyahu ba-Mitzpah v'et ha-Kasdim who were found there, the men of war.

41:4  Va'y'hi ba-yom ha-sheni after he had killed Gedalyahu, and no man knew it,  5  that there came anashim mi-Sh'khem, mi-Shilo, u'mi-Shomron, even eighty men, having their beards shaved and their clothes torn, and having cut themselves, u'minchah and frankincense in their hand, to bring them to beit YHWH.  6  Yishma'el ben Netanyah went forth min-ha-Mitzpah to meet them, weeping all along as he went: and as it happened, he met them, vayomer to them, Come el-G'dalyahu ben Achikam.  7  Va'y'hi, when they came into the midst of ha-ir, that Yishma'el ben Netanyah killed them, (and cast them) into the midst of the pit, he, and ha-anashim who were with him.  8  But ten anashim were found among those who said to Yishma'el, Don't kill us; for we have stores hidden ba-sadeh, of wheat, and of barley, v'shemen, and of honey.  So he stopped, and didn't kill them among their achim.

41:9  Now the pit in which Yishma'el cast all the dead bodies of ha-anashim whom he had killed, by the side of G'dalyahu (hu asher asah ha-melekh Asa for fear of Ba`sha, melekh Yisra'el,) Yishma'el ben N'tanyahu filled it with those who were killed.  10  Then Yishma'el carried away captive all the residue of ha`am asher ba-Mitzpah, even banot ha-melekh, v'et kol ha`am who remained ba-Mitzpah, asher N'vuzar'adan the captain of the guard had committed to G'dalyahu ben Achikam; Yishma'el ben N'tanyah carried them away captive, and departed to go over el-b'nei `Ammon.

41:11  But when Yochanan ben Kareach and all the captains of the forces who were with him heard of kol ha-ra'ah asher asah Yishma'el ben N'tanyah,  12  then they took kol ha-anashim, and went to fight with Yishma'el ben N'tanyah, and found him el-mayim rabbim asher b'Giv`on.  13  Va'y'hi, when kol ha`am asher et-Yishma'el saw Yochanan ben Kareach, and all the captains of the forces who were with him, then they were glad.  14  So kol ha`am who Yishma'el had carried away captive min ha-Mitzpah turned about and came back, and went to Yochanan ben Kareach.  15  But Yishma'el ben N'tanyah escaped mi-p'nei Yochanan with eight anashim, and went el-b'nei `Ammon.  16  Then Yochanan ben Kareach, and all the captains of the forces who were with him, took all the remnant of ha`am whom he had recovered from Yishma'el ben N'tanyah, min-ha-Mitzpah, after he had killed G'dalyah ben Achikam, (to wit), the men of war, v'nashim, and the children, and the eunuchs, whom he had brought back mi-Giv`on:  17  and they departed, and lived b'Gerut-Khimham, which is by Beit-Lechem, to go to enter into Mitzrayim,  18  mi'p'nei ha-Kasdim; for they were afraid of them, because Yishma'el ben N'tanyah had killed G'dalyahu ben Achikam, whom Melekh Bavel made governor ba-aretz.

CHAPTER 42

42:1  Then all the captains of the forces, v'Yochanan ben Kareach, v'Yezanyah ben Hosha`yah, v'khol ha`am mi-qaton v'ad gadol, came near,  2  and said el-Yirm'yahu ha-navi, Let, we pray you, our supplication be presented before you, and pray for us el-YHWH Eloheikha, even for all this remnant; for we are left but a few of many, as your eyes do see us:  3  that YHWH Eloheikha may show us ha-derekh in which we should walk, and the thing that we should do.  4  Vayomer Yirm'yahu na-navi to them, I have heard you; behold, I will pray el-YHWH Eloheikhem according to your d'varim; and it shall happen that whatever thing YHWH shall answer you, I will declare it to you; I will keep nothing back from you.  5  Then they said el-Yirm'yahu, YHWH be a true and faithful witness among us, if we don't do according to kol ha-davar with which YHWH Eloheikha shall send you to us.  6  Im-tov v'im-ra, we will obey qol YHWH Eloheinu, to whom we send you; that it may be well with us, when we obey qol YHWH Eloheinu.

42:7  Va'y'hi that after ten days, d'var YHWH came to Yirm'yahu.  8  Then he called Yochanan ben Kareach, and all the captains of the forces who were with him, and all kol ha`am l'mi-qaton v`ad-gadol,  9  vayomer to them, Koh amar YHWH, Elohei Yisra'el, to whom you sent me to present your supplication before him:  10  If you will still abide ba-aretz hazot, then will I build you, and not pull you down, and I will plant you, and not pluck you up; for I repent me of the evil that I have done to you.  11  Don't be afraid of melekh Bavel, of whom you are afraid; don't be afraid of him, n'um YHWH: for I am with you to save you, and to deliver you from his hand.  12  I will grant you mercy, that he may have mercy on you, and cause you to return to your own adamah.  13  But if you say, We will not dwell ba-aretz hazot; so that you don't obey qol YHWH Eloheikhem,  14  saying, No; but we will go into eretz Mitzrayim, where we shall see no war, nor hear qol shofar, nor have hunger of lechem; and there will we dwell:  15  now therefore hear d'var YHWH, remnant of Y'hudah: Koh amar YHWH tz'va'ot, Elohei Yisra'el, If you indeed set your faces to enter into Mitzrayim, and go to sojourn there;  16  then it shall happen, that the sword, which you fear, shall overtake you there b'eretz Mitzrayim; and the famine, whereof you are afraid, shall follow hard after you there in Mitzrayim; and there you shall die.  17  So shall it be with all kol ha-anashim who set their faces to go into Mitzrayim to sojourn there: they shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence; and none of them shall remain or escape from the evil that I will bring on them.

42:18  Ki khoh amar YHWH Tz'va'ot, Elohei Yisra'el: As my anger and my wrath has been poured forth on the inhabitants of Yerushalaim, so shall my wrath be poured forth on you, when you shall enter into Mitzrayim; and you shall be an object of horror, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach; and you shall see this place no more.  19  YHWH has spoken concerning you, remnant of Y'hudah, Don't you go into Mitzrayim: know certainly that I have testified to you ha-yom.  20  For you have dealt deceitfully against your own nafshot; for you sent me to YHWH Eloheikhem, lemor, Pray for us el-YHWH Eloheinu; and according to all that YHWH Eloheinu shall say, so declare to us, and we will do it:  21  and I have this day declared it to you; but you have not obeyed qol YHWH Eloheikhem in anything for which he has sent me to you.  22  Now therefore know certainly that you shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, in the place where you desire to go to sojourn there.

PEREQ ‏מג‎
CHAPTER 43

43:1  Va'y'hi, when Yirm'yahu had made an end of speaking el-kol ha`am et-kol divrei YHWH Eloheihem, with which YHWH Eloheihem had sent him to them, even kol d'varim ha-eleh,  2  vayomer `Azaryah ben Hosha`yah, v'Yochanan ben Kareach, v'khol the proud anashim, saying to Yirm'yahu, You speak falsely: YHWH Eloheinu has not sent you to say, You shall not go into Mitzrayim to sojourn there;  3  but Barukh ben Neriyah sets you on against us, to deliver us b'yad ha-Kasdim, that they may put us to death, and carry us away captive to Bavel.  4  So Yochanan ben Kareach, and all the captains of the forces, v'khol ha`am, didn't obey qol YHWH, to dwell b'eretz Y'hudah.  5  But Yochanan ben Kareach, and all the captains of the forces, took all the remnant of Y'hudah, who were returned mi-kol ha-goyim where they had been driven, to sojourn b'eretz Y'hudah;  6  the men v'et ha-nashim, and the children v'et banot ha-melekh v'et kol ha-nefesh asher Nevuzar'adan the captain of the guard had left with G'dalyahu ben Achikam, ben Shafan; v'et Yirm'yahu ha-navi, v'et Barukh ben Neriyahu;  7  and they came into eretz Mitzrayim; for they didn't obey qol YHWH: and they came to Tachpanches.

43:8  Va'y'hi d'var YHWH el-Yirm'yahu b'Tachpanches, lemor,  9  Take great stones in your hand, and hide them in mortar in the brick work, which is b'fetach beit Par`oh b'Tachpanches, in the sight of anashim Y'hudah;  10  and tell them, Koh amar YHWH Tz'va'ot, Elohei Yisra'el: Hinneh, I will send and take Nevukhadretztzar melekh Bavel, my servant, and will set his kisseh on these stones that I have hidden; and he shall spread his royal pavilion over them.  11  He shall come, and shall strike eretz Mitzrayim; such as are for death (shall be given) to death, and such as are for captivity to captivity, and such as are for the sword to the sword.  12  I will kindle esh b'vatei elohei Mitzrayim; and he shall burn them, and carry them away captive: and he shall wrap himself with eretz Mitzrayim, as a shepherd puts on his garment; and he shall go forth mi-sham b'shalom.  13  He shall also break the pillars of Beit-Shemesh asher b'eretz Mitzrayim, va-et batei elohei Mitzrayim shall he burn ba-esh.

PEREQ ‏מד‎
CHAPTER 44

44:1  Ha-davar asher hayah el-Yirm'yahu el-kol ha-Y'hudim who lived b'eretz Mitzrayim, b'Migdol, u'v'Tachpanches, u'v'Nof, u'v'eretz Pat'ros, lemor,  2  Koh amar YHWH Tz'va'ot, Elohei Yisra'el: You have seen kol ha-ra'ah that I have brought on Yerushalaim, v'al kol arei Y'hudah; v'hinneh, they are a desolation ha-yom hazeh, and no man dwells therein,  3  because of their wickedness which they have committed to provoke me to anger, in that they went to burn incense, (and) to serve elohim acherim that they didn't know, neither they, nor you, nor avoteikhem.  4  However I sent to you all my servants ha-n'vi'im, rising up early and sending them, saying, Now don't do this abominable thing that I hate.  5  But they didn't listen, nor inclined their ear to turn from their wickedness, to burn no incense to elohim acherim.  6  Therefore my wrath and my anger was poured forth, and was kindled b'arei Y'hudah and in the streets of Y'rushalaim; and they are wasted and desolate, as it is ha-yom hazeh.  7  Therefore now, Koh amar YHWH Tz'va'ot, Elohei Yisra'el: Why do you do (this) ra'ah g'dolah el-nafshotekhem, to cut off from you ish v'ishshah, infant and suckling, out of the midst of Y'hudah, to leave you none remaining;  8  in that you provoke me to anger with the works of your hands, burning incense to elohim acherim b'eretz Mitzrayim, where you are gone to sojourn; that you may be cut off, and that you may be a curse and a reproach b'khol goyei ha-aretz?  9  Have you forgotten the wickedness of avoteikhem, and the wickedness of malkhei Y'hudah, and the wickedness of their nashim, and your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your nashim which they committed b'eretz Y'hudah, and in the streets of Y'rushalaim? 10  They are not humbled even ad ha-yom hazeh, neither have they feared, nor walked in my Torah, nor in my chukkim, that I set before you and before avoteikhem.

44:11  Therefore Koh amar YHWH Tz'va'ot, Elohei Yisra'el: Hinneh, I will set my face against you for evil, even to cut off kol Y'hudah.  12  I will take the remnant of Y'hudah that have set their faces to go into eretz Mitzrayim to sojourn there, and they shall all be consumed; b'eretz Mitzrayim shall they fall; they shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine; they shall die, mi-qaton v'ad gadol, by the sword and by the famine; and they shall be an object of horror, (and) an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach.  13  For I will punish those who dwell b'eretz Mitzrayim, as I have punished Yerushalaim, by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence;  14  so that none of the remnant of Y'hudah, who have gone b'eretz Mitzrayim to sojourn there, shall escape or be left, to return into eretz Y'hudah, to which they have a desire to return to dwell there: for none shall return save such as shall escape.

44:15  Then kol ha-anashim who knew that their nashim burned incense to elohim acherim, v'khol ha-nashim who stood by, qahal gadol v'khol ha`am who lived b'eretz Mitzrayim, b'Phat'ros, answered Yirm'yahu, lemor,  16  Ha-davar that you have spoken to us b'shem YHWH, we will not listen to you.  17  But we will certainly perform kol ha-davar that is gone forth out of our mouth, to burn incense to the queen of ha-shamayim, and to pour out drink-offerings to her, as we have done, anachnu v'avoteinu, our m'lakhim v'sareinu, in the cities of Y'hudah, and in the streets of Yerushalaim; for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.  18  But since we left off burning incense to the queen of ha-shamayim, and pouring out drink-offerings to her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.  19  When we burned incense to the queen of ha-shamayim, and poured out drink-offerings to her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink-offerings to her, without our husbands?

44:20  Vayomer Yirm'yahu el-kol ha`am, to the men, v`al-ha-nashim, v`al-kol ha`am who had given him who answer, lemor,  21  The incense that you burned b'arei Y'hudah, and in the streets of Yerushalaim, attem v'avoteikhem, your m'lakhim and your sarim, v'am ha-aretz, didn't YHWH remember them, and didn't it come into his mind?  22  so that YHWH could no longer bear, because of the evil of your doings, and because of the abominations which you have committed; therefore is your eretz become a desolation, and an astonishment, and a curse, without inhabitant, as it is ha-yom hazeh.  23  Because you have burned incense, and because you have sinned against YHWH, and have not obeyed qol YHWH, nor walked in his Torah, nor in his chukkim, nor in his edim; therefore this evil is happened to you, as it is ha-yom hazeh.

44:24  Vayomer Yirm'yahu el-kol ha`am v'el kol ha-nashim, Hear d'var YHWH, kol Y'hudah asher b'eretz Mitzrayim:  25  Koh amar YHWH Tsva'ot, Elohei Yisra'el, lemor, You and your nashim have both spoken with your mouths, and with your hands have fulfilled it, saying, We will surely perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn incense to the queen of ha-shamayim, and to pour out drink-offerings to her: establish then your vows, and perform your vows.  26  Therefore hear d'var YHWH, kol Y'hudah who dwell b'eretz Mitzrayim: Hinneh, I have sworn by my shem gadol, amar YHWH, that my name shall no more be named in the mouth of kol ish Y'hudah b'khol eretz Mitzrayim, saying, Chai-Adonai YHWH.  27  Hinneh, I watch over them l'ra'ah v'lo l'tovah; v'khol ish Y'hudah asher b'eretz Mitzrayim shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine, until there be an end of them.  28  Those who escape the sword shall return min-eretz Mitzrayim (into) eretz Y'hudah, few in number; and all the remnant of Y'hudah, who have gone into eretz Mitzrayim to sojourn there, shall know whose d'var shall stand, mine, or theirs.  29  This shall be the sign to you, n'um YHWH, that I will punish you ba-maqom hazeh, that you may know that my d'varim shall surely stand against you l'ra'ah:  30  Koh amar YHWH, Hinneh, I will give Par`oh Chofra [BDB: 589-564 BCE] melekh Mitzrayim into the hand of his enemies, and into the hand of those who seek his life; as I gave Tzidkiyahu melekh Y'hudah b'yad Nevukhadretztzar melekh Bavel, who was his enemy, and sought his nefesh.

CHAPTER 46

46:1  Asher hayah d'var YHWH el-Yirm'yahu ha-navi `al-ha-goyim.

46:2  L'Mitzrayim: concerning the army of Par`oh-Nekho melekh Mitzrayim, which was by the river P'rat b'Khark'mish, which Nevukhadretztzar melekh Bavel struck in the fourth year of Y'hoyakim ben Yoshiyahu, melekh Y'hudah.
3  Prepare magen and large shield,
and draw near to battle.
4  Harness the horses,
and get up, you horsemen,
and stand forth with your helmets;
polish the spears,
put on the coats of mail.
5  Why have I seen it?
they are dismayed and are turned backward;
and their mighty ones are beaten down, and have fled apace,
and don't look back: terror is on every side, n'um YHWH.
6  Don't let the swift flee away,
nor ha-gibbor escape;
in the north by the river P'rat
have they stumbled and fallen.
7  Who is this who rises up like the stream [Nile],
whose waters toss themselves like the rivers?
8  Mitzrayim rises up like the stream [Nile],
and his waters toss themselves like the rivers:
and he says, I will rise up, I will cover ha-aretz;
I will destroy the city and the inhabitants of it.
9  Go up, you horses; and rage, you chariots;
and let ha-gibborim go forth: Kush u'Phut, who handle magen;
v'Ludim, who handle and bend the bow.
10  v'ha-yom ha-hu la'donai, YHWH Tz'va'ot,
a day of vengeance,
that he may avenge him of his adversaries:
and the sword shall devour and be sated,
and shall drink its fill of their blood;
for Adonai YHWH Tz'va'ot has a sacrifice
in the north country by the river P'rat.
11  Go up into Gil`ad, and take balm,
virgin bat Mitzrayim:
in vain do you use many medicines;
there is no healing for you.
12  Goyim have heard of your shame,
and ha-aretz is full of your cry;
for gibbor has stumbled against gibbor,
they are fallen both of them together.
46:13  Ha-davar asher diber YHWH el-Yirm'yahu ha-navi, how that Nevukhadretztzar melekh Bavel should come and strike eretz Mitzrayim.
14  Declare you in Mitzrayim, and publish in Migdol,
and publish b'Nof u'v'Tachpanches:
say you, Stand forth, and prepare you;
for the sword has devoured round about you.
15  Why are your mighty one prostrated?  They didn't stand,
because YHWH thrust them down.
16  He made many to stumble,
yes, they fell one on another:
and they said, Arise, and let us go again to our own people,
and to the land of our birth, from the oppressing sword.
17  They cried there, Par`oh melekh Mitzrayim is but a noise;
he has let ha-mo'ed pass by.
18  Chai ani, n'um ha-melekh -- YHWH Tz'va'ot sh'mo,
surely like Tavor be-harim,
and like Karmel ba-yom yavo.
19  Make ready to go into captivity, you daughter who dwells in Mitzrayim,
for Nof shall become a waste, and shall be burnt up, without inhabitant.
20  Mitzrayim is a very beautiful heifer;
(but) a gadfly out of the north is come, is come.
21  Also her hired men in the midst of her are like fatted calves;
for they also are turned back, they are fled away together,
they didn't stand:
for the day of their calamity is come on them,
the time of their visitation.
22  The sound of it shall go like ha-nachash;
for they shall march with an army, and come against her with axes, as wood cutters.
23  They shall cut down her forest, n'um YHWH,
though it can't be searched;
because they are more than the locusts, and are innumerable.
24  Bat Mitzrayim shall be put to shame;
she shall be delivered b'yad am-tsafon.
46:25  Amar YHWH Tz'va'ot, Elohei Yisra'el: Hinneh, I will punish Amon mi-No, v`al-Par`oh, v`al-Mitzrayim, with her elohim, and her m'lakhim; even Par`oh, and those who trust in him:  26  and I will deliver them into the hand of those who seek their nefesh, u'v'yad Nevukhadretztzar melekh Bavel, and into the hand of his servants; and afterwards it shall be inhabited, as in the days of old, n'um YHWH.
27  But you, don't be afraid, Ya`akov my eved,
neither be dismayed, Yisra'el:
ki hinneh, I will save you from afar,
and your zera from the land of their captivity;
and Ya`akov shall return, and shall be quiet and at ease,
and none shall make him afraid.
28  You, don't be afraid, Ya`akov my eved, n'um YHWH;
for I am with you:
for I will make a full end of kol ha-goyim where I have driven you;
but I will not make a full end of you,
but I will correct you l'mishpat,
and will in no way leave you unpunished.

2  Koh amar YHWH:

and shall become an overflowing stream,
and shall overflow the land and all that is therein,
the city and those who dwell therein;
and ha-adam shall cry out,
and all the inhabitants of ha-aretz shall wail.
3  At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his stallions,
at the rushing of his chariots, at the rumbling of his wheels,
the fathers don't look back to their children, so feeble are their hands;
4  `al-ha-yom ha-ba to destroy kol P'lishtim,
to cut off from Tzor v'Tzidon every helper who remains:
for YHWH will destroy P'lishtim,
the remnant of the coastlands of Kaftor [Crete].
5  Baldness is come on `Aza;
Ashk'lon is brought to nothing,
the remnant of their valley:
how long will you cut yourself?
6  Hoy, sword of YHWH,
how long will it be before you be quiet?
put up yourself into your scabbard;
rest, and be still.
7  How can you be quiet,
seeing YHWH has given you a charge?
El Ashk'lon, and against the sea-shore,
there has he appointed it.

CHAPTER 48

48:1  L'Mo'av.  Koh amar YHWH, Elohei Yisra'el:
Hoy el-N'vo! for it is laid waste; Kiryatayim is put to shame, it is taken; the stronghold is put to shame and broken down.
2  The praise of Mo'av is no more; b'Cheshbon they have devised evil against her: Come, and let us cut her off from being a goy.  You also, Madmen, shall be brought to silence: the sword shall pursue you.
3  The sound of a cry from Choronayim, desolation and great destruction!
4  Mo'av is destroyed; her little ones have caused a cry to be heard.
5  For by the ascent of Luchit with continual weeping shall they go up; for at the descent of Choronayim they have heard the distress of the cry of destruction.
6  Flee, save your lives, and be like the heath ba-midbar.
7  For, because you have trusted in your ma'asim and in your treasures, you also shall be taken: and Kemosh shall go forth into captivity, his Kohanim and his sarim together.
8  The destroyer shall come el-kol ir, and no city shall escape; the valley also shall perish, and the plain shall be destroyed; asher amar YHWH.
9  Give wings l'Mo'av, that she may fly and get her away: and her cities shall become a desolation, without any to dwell therein.
48:10  Cursed be he who does the work of YHWH negligently; and cursed be he who keeps back his sword from blood.
11  Mo'av has been at ease from his youth, and he has settled on his lees, and has not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither has he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remains in him, and his scent is not changed.
48:12  Therefore, hihheh, yamim ba'im, n'um YHWH, that I will send to him those who pour off, and they shall pour him off; and they shall empty his vessels, and break their bottles in pieces.  13  Mo'av shall be ashamed of Kemosh, ka-asher beit Yisra'el was ashamed of Beit-El their confidence.
14  How say you, "Gibborim anachnu, and valiant men for the war"?
15  Mo'av is laid waste, and they are gone up into his cities, and his chosen young men are gone down to the slaughter, n'um ha-melekh, YHWH Tz'va'ot sh'mo.
16  The calamity of Mo'av is near to come, and his affliction hurries fast.
17  All you who are round about him, bemoan him, and all you who know his name; say, "How is the strong staff broken, the beautiful rod!"
18  Come down from honor, sit in thirst, inhabitant, bat Divon; for the destroyer of Mo'av is come up against you, he has destroyed your strongholds.
19  Stand el-derekh and watch, Inhabitant of `Aro`er: ask him who flees, and her who escapes; say, "What has been done?"
20  Mo'av is put to shame; for it is broken down: wail and cry; tell it b'Arnon, that Mo'av is laid waste.
48:21  U'mishpat ba el-eretz of the plain country, el-Cholon v'el-Yah'tzah v`al-Meifa`at,  22  v`al-Divon v`al-N'vo v`al-Beit-Divlatayim,  23  v`al Kiryatayim, v`al-Beit Gamul, v`al-Beit M`on,  24  v`al-K'riyot, v`al-Botz'rah, v`al-kol arei eretz Mo'av, far or near.  25  The horn of Mo'av is cut off, and his arm is broken, n'um YHWH.

48:26  Make you him drunken; for he magnified himself against YHWH: and Mo'av shall wallow in his vomit, and he also shall be in derision.  27  For wasn't Yisra'el a derision to you? was he found among thieves? for as often as you speak of him, you wag the head.
28  You inhabitants of Mo'av, leave the cities, and dwell in the rock; and be like the yonah that makes her nest over the mouth of the abyss.
29  We have heard of the pride of Mo'av, (that) he is very proud; his loftiness, and his pride, and his arrogance, and the haughtiness of his heart.
30  I know his wrath, n'um YHWH, that it is nothing; his boastings have worked nothing.
31  Therefore will I wail for Mo'av; yes, I will cry out for Mo'av: el-anshei Kir-Cheres shall they mourn.
32  With more than the weeping of Ya`zer will I weep for you, ha-gefen Sivmah: your branches passed over yam `ad yam Ya`zer: on your summer fruits and on your vintage the destroyer is fallen.
33  Simchah and joy is taken away from the fruitful field u'me-eretz Mo'av; and I have caused yayin to cease from the wine presses: none shall tread with shouting; shouting shall be no shouting.
48:34  From the cry of Cheshbon `ad-El`aleh, `ad-Yahatz have they uttered their voice, mi-Tzo`ar `ad-Choronayim, `Eglat Sh'lishiyah: ki gam me [mayim] Nimrim also shall become desolate.  35  Moreover I will cause to cease l'Mo'av, n'um YHWH, him who offers in the high place, and him who burns incense to his elohim.  36  Therefore my heart sounds for Mo'av like pipes, and my heart sounds like pipes for anshei Kir-Cheres: therefore the abundance that he has gotten is perished.

48:37  Ki kol rosh is bald, and every beard clipped: on all the hands are cuttings, and on the loins sackcloth.  38  On all the housetops of Mo'av and in the streets of it there is lamentation every where; for I have broken Mo'av like a vessel in which none delights, n'um YHWH.  39  How is it broken down! (how) do they wail! how has Mo'av turned the back with shame! so shall Mo'av become a derision and a terror to all who are round about him.
40  Ki kho amar YHWH: Hinneh, he shall fly as an eagle, and shall spread out his wings against Mo'av.
41  K'riyyot is taken, and the strongholds are seized, and lev gibborei Mo'av ba-yom ha-hu shall be as the heart of an ishshah in her pangs.
42  Mo'av shall be destroyed from being a people, because he has magnified himself against YHWH.
43  Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are on you, inhabitant of Mo'av, n'um YHWH.
44  He who flees from the fear shall fall into the pit; and he who gets up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for I will bring on him, even on Mo'av, the year of their visitation, n'um YHWH.
45  Those who fled stand without strength under the shadow of Cheshbon; for a fire is gone forth out of Cheshbon, and a flame from the midst of Sichon, and has devoured the corner of Mo'av, and the crown of the head of the tumultuous ones.
46  Woe to you, Mo'av!  the people of K'mosh is undone; for your banim are taken away captive, and your banot into captivity.
47  Yet will I bring back the captivity of Mo'av b'acharit ha-yamim, n'um YHWH.  Thus far is mishpat Mo'av.

CHAPTER 49

49:1  Li'vnei `Ammon.  Koh amar YHWH: Has Yisra'el no banim?  has he no heir?  Why then does Malkam possess Gad, and his people dwell in the cities of it?
2  Therefore, hinneh, yamim ba'im, n'um YHWH, that I will cause an alarm of war to be heard el-Rabbah b'nei `Ammon; and it shall become a desolate heap, and her banot shall be burned ba-esh: then shall Yisra'el possess those who did possess him, amar YHWH.
3  Wail, Cheshbon, for `Ai is laid waste; cry, banot Rabbah, gird you with sackcloth: lament, and run back and forth among the fences; for Malkam shall go into captivity, his Kohanim and his sarim together.
4  Why glory you in the valleys, your flowing valley, backsliding daughter?  who trusted in her treasures, (saying), Who shall come to me?
5  Hinneh, I will bring a fear on you, n'um Adonai YHWH, Tz'va'ot, from all who are round about you; and you shall be driven out every man right forth, and there shall be none to gather together the fugitives.
49:6  But afterward I will bring back the captivity of b'nei `Ammon, n'um YHWH.
7  Le'Edom.  Koh amar YHWH Tz'va'ot: Ein od chokhmah b'Teman?  Is counsel perished from the prudent?  Is their wisdom vanished?
8  Flee you, turn back, dwell in the depths, inhabitants of D'dan; for I will bring the calamity of Esav on him, the time that I shall visit him.
9  If grape-gatherers came to you, would they not leave some gleaning grapes?  If thieves by night, wouldn't they destroy until they had enough?
10  But I have made Esav bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide himself: his zera is destroyed, and his achim, and his neighbors; and he is no more.
11  Leave your fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let your widows trust in me.
49:12  Ki khoh amar YHWH: Hinneh, they to whom it didn't pertain to drink of the cup shall assuredly drink; and are you he who shall altogether go unpunished?  You shall not go unpunished, but you shall surely drink.  13  For I have sworn by myself, n'um YHWH, that Botzrah shall become an astonishment, a reproach, a waste, and a curse; and all the cities of it shall be wastes `olam.
14  I have heard news from YHWH, and an ambassador is sent ba-goyim, (saying), Gather yourselves together, and come against her, and rise up to the battle.
15  Ki hinneh, I have made you katon ba-goyim and despised ba-adam.
16  As for your terror, the pride of your heart has deceived you, you who dwell in the clefts of the rock, who hold the height of the hill: though you should make your nest as high as the eagle, I will bring you down from there, n'um YHWH.
49:17  Edom shall become an astonishment: everyone who passes by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss at all the plagues of it.  18  As in the overthrow of S'dom Va'`Amorah and the neighbor cities of it, amar YHWH, no ish shall dwell there, neither shall any ben adam sojourn therein.  19  Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the pride of ha-Yarden against the strong habitation: for I will suddenly make them run away from it; and whoever is chosen, him will I appoint over it: for who is like me? and who will appoint me a time? u'mi-zeh ro'eh who will stand before me?  20  Therefore hear the counsel of YHWH, that he has taken against Edom; and his purposes, that he has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely they shall drag them away, the little ones of the flock; surely he shall make their habitation desolate over them.  21  Ha-aretz trembles at the noise of their fall; there is a cry, the noise whereof is heard b'Yam Suf.  22  Hinneh, he shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread out his wings against Botzrah: and the heart of gibborei Edom ba-yom ha-hu shall be as the heart of an ishshah in her pangs.
23  L'Dammesek, Chamat is confounded, v'Arpad; for they have heard evil news, they are melted away: there is sorrow ba-yam; it can't be quiet.
24  Dammesek has grown feeble, she turns herself to flee, and trembling has seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken hold of her, as of an ishshah in travail.
25  How is the city of praise not forsaken, the city of my joy?
26  Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, v'khol anshei of war shall be brought to silence ba-yom ha-hu, n'um YHWH Tz'va'ot.
27  I will kindle a fire in the wall of Dammesek, and it shall devour the palaces of Ben-Hadad.
28  L'Kedar, and of the kingdoms of Chatzor, which Nevukhadretztzar melekh Bavel struck.
Koh amar YHWH:
Arise you, go up el-Kedar, and destroy b'nei kedem.
29  Their ohelim and their flocks shall they take; they shall carry away for themselves their curtains, and all their vessels, and their g'malim; and they shall cry to them, Terror on every side!
30  Flee you, wander far off, dwell in the depths, you inhabitants of Chatzor, n'um YHWH; for Nevukhadretztzar melekh Bavel has taken counsel against you, and has conceived a purpose against you.
31  Arise, go up to a nation that is at ease, that dwells without care, n'um YHWH; that have neither gates nor bars, that dwell alone.
32  Their g'malim shall be a booty, and the multitude of their cattle a spoil: and I will scatter l'khol ruach those who have the corners (of their hair) cut off; and I will bring their calamity from every side of them, n'um YHWH.
33  Chatzor shall be a dwelling-place of jackals, a desolation `ad`olam: no man shall dwell there, neither shall any ben adam sojourn therein.
49:34  Asher haya d'var YHWH el-Yirm'yahu ha-navi el-`Elam, b'reishit malkhut Tzidkiyah melekh Y'hudah, lemor,  35  "Koh amar YHWH Tz'va'ot: 'Hinneh, I will break the bow of `Elam, reshit of their gibbor.  36  El-`Elam will I bring the four ruchot from the four quarters of ha-shamayim, and will scatter them l'khol ha-ruchot ha-eleh; v'lo yiyeh ha-goy asher lo-yavo sham the outcasts of `Elam.  37  I will cause `Elam to be dismayed before their enemies, and before those who seek their nefesh; and I will bring evil on them, even my fierce anger, n'um YHWH; and I will send the sword after them, until I have consumed them;  38  and I will set my kiseh b'`Elam, and will destroy from there melekh v'sarim," n'um YHWH.

CHAPTER 50

50:1  Ha-davar asher diber YHWH el-Bavel el-eretz Kasdim, b'yad Yirm'yahu ha-navi. :
2  Declare you ba-goyim and publish,
and set up a standard; publish, and don't conceal:
say, Bavel is taken,
Bel is put to shame,
M'rodakh is dismayed;
her images are put to shame,
her idols are dismayed.
3  For out of the north there comes up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and none shall dwell therein: they are fled, they are gone, me-adam v'ad b'hemah.

50:4  In those days, and in that time, n'um YHWH, yavo'u b'nei Yisra'el, they u'v'nei Y'hudah together; they shall go on their way weeping, and shall seek YHWH Eloheihem5  They shall inquire concerning Tziyon with their faces turned toward it, (saying), Come, and join yourselves to YHWH in a b'rit `olam that shall not be forgotten.

50:6  My people have been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray; they have turned them away on the mountains; they have gone from mountain to hill; they have forgotten their resting-place.  7  All who found them have devoured them; and their adversaries said, We are not guilty, because they have sinned against YHWH, the habitation of righteousness, the hope of their fathers, YHWH.

50:8  Flee out of the midst of Bavel, u'me'eretz Kasdim, and be as the male goats before the flocks.  9  Ki hinneh, I will stir up and cause to come up `al-Bavel qahal goyim g'dolim me-eretz tzafon; and they shall set themselves in array against her; from there she shall be taken: their arrows shall be as of an expert gibbor; none shall return in vain.  10  Kasdim shall be a prey: all who prey on her shall be satisfied, n'um YHWH
11  Because you are glad, because you rejoice,
you who plunder my heritage,
because you are wanton as a heifer that treads out (the grain),
and neigh as strong horses;
12  your mother shall be utterly put to shame;
she who bore you shall be confounded:
behold, she shall be the least of goyim,
a midbar, a dry land, va'aravah.
13  Because of the wrath of YHWH she shall not be inhabited,
but she shall be wholly desolate:
everyone who goes el-Bavel shall be astonished,
and hiss at all her plagues.
14  Set yourselves in array el-Bavel round about,
all you who bend the bow;
shoot at her, spare no arrows:
for she has sinned la-YHWH.
15  Shout against her round about:
she has submitted herself;
her bulwarks are fallen,
her walls are thrown down;
for it is the vengeance of YHWH:
take vengeance on her;
as she has done, do to her.
16  Cut off the sower mi-Bavel,
and him who handles the sickle in the time of harvest:
for fear of the oppressing sword,
they shall turn everyone to his people,
and they shall flee everyone to his own eretz.
50:17  Yisra'el is a hunted sheep; the lions have driven him away: first, melekh Ashshur devoured him; and now at last Nevukhadretztzar melekh Bavel has broken his bones.  18  Therefore koh amar YHWH Tz'va'ot, Elohei Yisra'el: "Hinneh, I will punish melekh Bavel and his eretz, as I have punished melekh Ashshur19  I will bring Yisra'el again to his pasture, and he shall feed on ha-Karmel v'ha-Bashan, and his nefesh shall be satisfied ba-har Efrayim v'ha-Gil`ad20  Ba-yamim ha-hem, and in that time, n'um YHWH, the iniquity of Yisra'el shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Y'hudah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon them whom I leave as a remnant.
21  Go up `al-ha-aretz Meratayim,
even against it, and against the inhabitants of P'kod:
kill and utterly destroy after them,
n'um YHWH,
and do according to all that I have commanded you.
22  A voice of war is ba-aretz, and of great destruction.
23  How the hammer of kol ha-aretz
is cut apart and broken!
how is Bavel become a desolation ba-goyim!
24  I have laid a snare for you, and you are also taken, Bavel,
and you weren't aware:
you are found, and also caught,
because you have striven against YHWH.
25  YHWH has opened his armory,
and has brought forth the weapons of his indignation;
for Adonai, YHWH Tz'va'ot, has a work (to do)
b'eretz Kasdim.
26  Come against her from the utmost border;
open her store-houses;
cast her up as heaps, and destroy her utterly;
let nothing of her be left.
27  Kill all her bulls;
let them go down to the slaughter:
woe to them! for their day is come,
the time of their visitation.
50:28  The voice of those who flee and escape me-eretz Bavel, to declare b'Tziyon the vengeance of YHWH Eloheinu, the vengeance of his heikhal.

50:29  Call together the archers el-Bavel, all those who bend the bow; encamp against her round about; let none of it escape: recompense her according to her work; according to all that she has done, do to her; for she has been proud against YHWH, el-K'dosh Yisra'el.  50:30  Therefore shall her young men fall in her streets, and all her men of war shall be brought to silence ba-yom ha-hu, n'um YHWH
31  Hinneh, I am against you, you proud one,
n'um Adonai YHWH Tz'va'ot;
for your day is come,
the time that I will visit you.
32  The proud one shall stumble and fall,
and none shall raise him up;
and I will kindle a fire in his cities,
and it shall devour all who are round about him.
50:33  Koh amar YHWH Tz'va'ot: B'nei Yisra'el u'v'nei Y'hudah are oppressed together; and all who took them captive hold them fast; they refuse to let them go.  34  Their Redeemer is chazak; YHWH Tz'va'ot sh'mo: he will thoroughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to ha-aretz, and disquiet the inhabitants of Bavel
35  A sword is on Kasdim, n'um YHWH,
and on the inhabitants of Bavel,
and on her sarim, and on her chakhamim.
36  A sword is on the boasters,
and they shall become fools;
a sword is on her gibborim,
and they shall be dismayed.
37  A sword is on their horses, and on their chariots,
and on all the mixed people who are in the midst of her;
and they shall become as women:
a sword is on her treasures,
and they shall be robbed.
38  A drought is on her mayim,
and they shall be dried up;
for it is a land of engraved images,
and they are mad over idols.
50:39  Therefore the desert creatures will live along with the jackals, and the ostriches shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited forever; neither shall it be lived in `ad-dor va-dor40  As when Elohim overthrew S'dom v'`Amorah and the neighbor cities of it, n'um YHWH, so shall no ish dwell there, neither shall any ben adam sojourn therein.
41  Hinneh, am ba mi-tzafon;
v'goy gadol u'm'lakhim rabbim
shall be stirred up from the uttermost parts of ha-aretz.
42  They lay hold on bow and spear;
they are cruel, and have no mercy;
their voice roars like the sea;
and they ride on horses,
everyone set in array, as a man to the battle,
against you, bat-Bavel.
43  Melekh Bavel has heard the news of them,
and his hands wax feeble:
anguish has taken hold of him,
pangs as of a woman in childbirth.
50:44  Hinneh, (the enemy) shall come up like a lion from the pride of ha-Yarden against the strong habitation: for I will suddenly make them run away from it; and whoever is chosen, him will I appoint over it: for who is like me? and who will appoint me a time? u'mi-zeh ro'eh who can stand before me?  45  Therefore hear the counsel of YHWH, that he has taken against Bavel; and his purposes, that he has purposed el-eretz Kasdim: Surely they shall drag them away, the little ones of the flock; surely he shall make their habitation desolate over them.  46  At the noise of the taking of Bavel, ha-aretz trembles, and the cry is heard ba-goyim.

PEREQ ‏נא‎
CHAPTER 51

51:1  Koh amar YHWH:
Hinneh, I will raise up against Bavel,
and against those who dwell in Lev-Kamai,
a destroying ruach.
2  I will send to Bavel strangers,
who shall scatter her;
and they shall empty her eretz:
for in the day of trouble they shall be against her round about.
3  Against (him who) bends let the archer bend his bow,
and against (him who) lifts himself up in his coat of mail:
and don't spare her young men;
destroy utterly all her host.
4  They shall fall down slain b'eretz Kasdim,
and thrust through in her streets.
5  For Yisra'el is not forsaken, nor Y'hudah,
of his Elohim, of YHWH Tz'va'ot;
though their land is full of guilt
mi-K'dosh Yisra'el.
6  Flee out of the midst of Bavel,
and save every man his life;
don't be cut off in her iniquity:
for it is the time of the vengeance of YHWH;
he will render to her a recompense.
7  Kos zahav Bavel b'yad YHWH,
who made kol ha-aretz drunken:
goyim have drunk of her yayin;
therefore goyim are mad.
8  Bavel is suddenly fallen and destroyed:
wail for her;
take balm for her pain,
if so be she may be healed.
9  We would have healed Bavel,
but she is not healed:
forsake her, and let us go everyone
into his own country;
for her mishpat reaches el-ha-shamayim,
and is lifted up even to the skies.
10  YHWH has brought forth tzidkoteinu:
come, and let us declare b'Tziyon
et-ma'aseh YHWH Eloheinu
.
11  Make sharp the arrows;
hold firm the shields:
YHWH has stirred up ruach malkhei Madai; because his purpose is against Bavel to destroy it: for it is the vengeance of YHWH, the vengeance of his hekhal
12  Set up a standard against the walls of Bavel,
make the watch strong,
set the watchmen,
prepare the ambushes;
for YHWH has both purposed and done
that which he spoke concerning the inhabitants of Bavel.
13  You who dwell `al-mayim rabbim,
abundant in treasures,
your end is come,
the measure of your covetousness.
14  YHWH Tz'va'ot has sworn by himself, (saying),
Surely I will fill you with men, as with the canker-worm;
and they shall lift up a shout against you.
15  He has made eretz by his power,
he has established the world by his chokhmah,
and by his understanding
has he stretched out shamayim:
16  when he utters his voice, there is a hamon mayim ba-shamayim,
and he causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of aretz;
he makes lightnings for the rain,
and brings forth ruach out of his treasuries.
17  Kol adam is become brutish, without knowledge;
every goldsmith is put to shame by his image;
for his molten image is falsehood,
and there is no ruach in them.
18  They are vanity, a work of delusion:
in the time of their visitation they shall perish.
19  The portion of Ya`akov is not like these;
for he is the former of all things
and is the tribe of his inheritance:
YHWH Tz'va'ot sh'mo.
20  You are my battle-ax and weapons of war:
and with you will I break in pieces goyim;
and with you will I destroy mamlakhot;
21  and with you will I break in pieces the horse and his rider;
and with you will I break in pieces the chariot and him who rides therein;
22  and with you will I break in pieces ish v'ishshah;
and with you will I break in pieces zaqen and youth;
and with you will I break in pieces the young man and the virgin;
23  and with you will I break in pieces ro'eh and his flock;
and with you will I break in pieces the farmer and his yoke (of oxen);
and with you will I break in pieces governors and deputies.
51:24  I will render to Bavel and to all the inhabitants of Kasdim all their evil that they have done b'Tziyon in your sight, n'um YHWH.
25  Hinneh, I am against you, destroying mountain, n'um YHWH,
which destroy kol ha-aretz;
and I will stretch out my hand on you, and roll you down from the rocks,
and will make you a burnt mountain.
26  They shall not take of you a stone for a corner,
nor a stone for foundations;
but you shall be desolate for ever,
n'um YHWH.
27  Set up a standard ba-aretz,
blow the shofar ba-goyim,
prepare goyim against her,
call together against her mamlakhot
Ararat, Minni, v'Ashk'naz
:
appoint a marshal against her;
cause the horses to come up as the rough canker-worm.
28  Prepare against her goyim
et-malkhei Madai
, the governors of it, and all the deputies of it,
and kol eretz of their dominion.
29  Ha-aretz trembles and is in pain;
for the purposes of YHWH against Bavel do stand,
to make eretz Bavel a desolation,
without inhabitant.
30  Gibborei Babel have forborne to fight,
they remain in their strongholds;
their might has failed;
they are become l'nashim:
her dwelling-places are set on fire;
her bars are broken.
31  One post shall run to meet another,
and one messenger to meet another,
to show melekh Bavel
that his city is taken on every quarter:
32  and the passages are seized,
and the reeds they have burned ba-esh,
and the men of war are frightened.
33  Ki koh amar YHWH Tz'va'ot, Elohei Yisra'el:
Bat Bavel is like a threshing floor
at the time when it is trodden;
yet a little while,
and the time of harvest shall come for her.
34  Nevukhadretztzar melekh Bavel has devoured me,
he has crushed me,
he has made me an empty vessel,
he has, like a tannin, swallowed me up,
he has filled his maw with my delicacies;
he has cast me out.
35  Violence done to me and to my flesh be `al-Bavel,
shall the inhabitant of Tziyon say;
and, My blood be on the inhabitants of Kasdim,
shall Yerushalaim say.
36  Therefore koh amar YHWH:
Hinneh, I will plead your cause, and take vengeance for you;
and I will dry up her sea, and make her fountain dry.
37  Bavel shall become heaps,
a dwelling-place for jackals,
an astonishment, and a hissing,
without inhabitant.
38  They shall roar together like young lions;
they shall growl as lions' whelps.
39  When they are heated, I will make their feast,
and I will make them drunken, that they may rejoice,
and sleep a perpetual sleep,
and not wake, n'um YHWH.
40  I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter,
like rams with male goats.
41  How is Sheshakh taken!
and the praise of kol ha-aretz seized!
how is Bavel become
a desolation ba-goyim!
42  The sea is come up `al-Bavel;
she is covered with the multitude of the waves of it.
43  Her cities are become a desolation,
a dry eretz va-aravah,
a land in which no man dwells,
neither does any ben adam pass thereby.
44  I will punish Bel b'Vavel,
and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he has swallowed up;
and goyim shall not flow any more to him:
yes, the wall of Bavel shall fall.
45  My people, go you out of the midst of her,
and save yourselves every man
from the fierce anger of YHWH.
46  Don't let your heart faint, neither fear
for the news that shall be heard ba-aretz;
for news shall come one year,
and after that in another year (shall come) news,
and violence ba-aretz,
ruler against ruler.
47  Therefore, hinneh, yamim ba-im
that I will execute judgment on the engraved images of Bavel;
and her whole land shall be confounded;
and all her slain shall fall in the midst of her.
48  Then shamayim va-aretz,
and all that is therein,
shall sing for joy over Bavel;
for the destroyers shall come to her mi-tzafon,
n'um YHWH
.
49  As Bavel has caused the slain of Yisra'el to fall,
so at Bavel shall fall the slain of kol ha-aretz.
50  You who have escaped the sword,
go, don't stand still;
remember YHWH from afar,
and let Yerushalaim come into your heart.
51  We are confounded, because we have heard reproach;
confusion has covered our faces:
for strangers are come
into the sanctuaries of beit YHWH
52  Therefore, hinneh, yamim ba'im, n'um YHWH,
that I will execute judgment on her engraved images;
and through all her land
the wounded shall groan.
53  Though Bavel should mount up to ha-shamayim,
and though she should fortify the height of her strength,
yet from me shall destroyers come to her,
n'um YHWH.
51:54  The sound of a cry mi-Bavel, and of great destruction me-eretz Kasdim!
55  For YHWH lays Bavel waste,
and destroys out of her the qol gadol;
and their waves roar like mayim rabbim;
the noise of their voice is uttered:
56  for the destroyer is come on her,
on Bavel,
and her gibborim are taken,
their bows are broken in pieces;
for YHWH is an El of recompenses,
shalem y'shalem [he will surely requite].
57  I will make drunk her sarim and her chakhamim,
her governors and her deputies, and her gibborim;
and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake up,
n'um ha-melekh -- YHWH Tz'va'ot sh'mo
58  Koh amar YHWH Tz'va'ot:
The broad walls of Bavel shall be utterly overthrown,
and her high gates
shall be burned ba-esh;
and the peoples shall labor for vanity,
and the nations for the fire; and they shall be weary.
51:59  Ha-davar which Yirm'yahu ha-navi commanded S'rayah ben N'riyah, ben Mach'seyah, when he went with Tzidkiyahu melekh Y'hudah (to) Bavel in the fourth year of his reign.  Now S'rayah was chief chamberlain.  60  Yirm'yahu wrote el-sefer echad kol ha-ra'ah that should come on Bavel, even kol ha-d'varim ha-eleh that are written concerning Bavel61  Vayomer Yirm'yahu el-S'rayah, "When you come to Bavel, then see that you read kol ha-d'varim ha-eleh62  and say, 'YHWH, you have spoken el-ha-maqom hazeh, to cut it off, that none shall dwell therein, from adam v`ad b'hemah, but that it shall be desolate forever.'"  63  It shall be, when you have made an end of reading ha-sefer hazeh, that you shall bind a stone to it, and cast it into the midst of the P'rat64  and you shall say, Thus shall Bavel sink, and shall not rise again mi-p'nei ha-ra'ah that I will bring on her; and they shall be weary.

Thus far are divrei Yirm'yahu.

CHAPTER 52

52:1  Tzidkiyahu was a son of twenty-one years when he began to reign; and he reigned eleven years bi'rushalaim: v'shem imo Chamutal bat Yirm'yahu mi-Livna2  He did that which was evil in the sight of YHWH, according to all that Y'hoyakim had done.  3  For through the anger of YHWH did it happen bi'rushalaim vi'hudah, until he had cast them out from his presence.  Tzidkiyahu rebelled against melekh Bavel.

52:4  It happened in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nevukhadretztzar melekh Bavel came, he and all his army, against Yerushalaim, and encamped against it; and they built forts against it round about.  5  So the city was besieged to the eleventh year of melekh Tzidkiyahu6  In the fourth month, in the ninth day of the month, the famine was sore in the city, v'lo hayah lechem l'am ha-aretz7  Then a breach was made in the city, and kol anshei of war fled, and went forth me-ha`ir lailah by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by gan ha-melekh; v'Khasdim `al-ha-ir round about; and they went derekh ha-`Aravah8  But the army of Kasdim pursued acherei ha-melekh, and overtook Tzidkiyahu b'aravah Y'recho; and all his army was scattered from him.  9  Then they took ha-melekh, and carried him el-melekh Bavel to Rivlah b'eretz Chamat; and he gave mishpatim on him.  10  Melekh Bavel killed b'nei Tzidkiyahu before his eyes: v'gam el-kol sarei Y'hudah he slew b'Rivlah11  He put out the eyes of Tzidkiyahu; and melekh Bavel bound him in fetters, and carried him to Bavel, and put him in prison until the day of his death.

52:12  Now in the fifth month, in the tenth day of the month, which was the nineteenth year of melekh Nevukhadretztzar, melekh Bavel, came Nevuzar'adan the captain of the guard, who stood lifnei melekh Bavel, bi'rushalaim13  and he burned beit YHWH v'et beit ha-melekh, v'et kol batei Yerushalaim, v'et kol beit ha-gadol, burned ba-esh14  All the army of Kasdim, who were with the captain of the guard, broke down all the walls of Yerushalaim round about.  15  Then Nevuzar'adan the captain of the guard carried away captive of the poorest of ha`am, and the residue of ha`am who were left ba-ir, and those who fell away, who fell to melekh Bavel, and the residue of the multitude.  16  But Nevuzar'adan the captain of the guard left of the poorest of ha-aretz to be vineyard keepers and farmers.

52:17  The pillars of n'choshet asher b'veit YHWH, and the bases v'et yam n'choshet asher b'veit YHWH did Kasdim break in pieces, and carried all the brass of them to Bavel18  The pots also, and the shovels, and the snuffers, and the basins, and the spoons, and all the vessels of n'choshet with which they ministered, took they away.  19  The cups, and the fire pans, and the basins, and the pots, and the m'norot, and the spoons, and the bowls-that which was of zahav, zahav, va-asher kesef, kesef,-the captain of the guard took away.  20  The two pillars, ha-yam echad, and the twelve brazen bulls that were under the bases, asher ha-melekh Shlomo had made for beit YHWH.  The n'choset of all these vessels was without weight.9  21  As for the pillars, the height of the one pillar was eighteen cubits; and a line of twelve cubits did compass it; and the thickness of it was four fingers: it was hollow.  22  A capital of n'choshet was on it; and the height of the one capital was five cubits, with network and pomegranates on the capital round about, ha-kol n'choshet: and the second pillar also had like these, and pomegranates.  23  There were ninety-six pomegranates on the sides; all the pomegranates were one hundred on the network round about.

52:24  The captain of the guard took S'rayah Kohen ha-rosh, v'et Tz'fanyah Kohen ha-mishneh, and the three keepers of the threshold:  25  u'min ha-ir he took an officer who was set over anshei of war; and seven anashim of those who saw the face of ha-melekh, who were found ba-ir; and the Sofer of the captain of the host, who mustered am ha-aretz; and sixty men of am ha-aretz, who were found in the midst of ha-ir26  Nevuzar'adan the captain of the guard took them, and brought them el melekh Bavel to Rivlah27  Melekh Bavel struck them, and put them to death b'Rivlah b'eretz Chamat.  So Y'hudah was carried away captive out of his adamah.

52:28  Zeh ha`am which were carried away captive by Nevukhadretztzar: in the seventh year three thousand twenty-three Y'hudim29  in the eighteenth year of Nevukhadretztzar he carried away captive from Yerushalaim eight hundred thirty-two persons;  30  in the three and twentieth year of Nevukhadretztzar, Nevuzar'adan the captain of the guard carried away captive of ha-Y'hudim seven hundred forty-five persons: kol nefesh were four thousand and six hundred.

52:31  It happened in the seven and thirtieth year of the captivity of Y'hoyakhin melekh Y'hudah, in the twelfth month, in the five and twentieth day of the month, that Evil M'rodakh melekh Bavel, in the (first) year of his reign, lifted up rosh Y'hoyakhin melekh Y'hudah and brought him forth out of prison;  32  and he spoke kindly to him, and set his kisseh above kisseh ha-m'lakhim who were with him in Bavel33  and changed his prison garments, and he [Y'hoyakhin] ate lechem before him continually kol y'mei of his life:  34  and for his allowance, there was a continual allowance given him by melekh Bavel, every day a portion until the day of his death, all the days of his life.

* shalom (Strong's 7965), from shalam (7999), a primitive root meaning to be safe (in mind, body or estate) - completeness (in number), safety, soundness (in body), welfare, health, prosperity, peace, quiet, tranquillity, contentment, friendship. "The principal meaning (of shalam) is completion and fulfillment.  It is the desirable state of wholeness in which relationships are restored.  Shalam can mean simple restitution or repayment, like a good business transaction.  It is an attitude of the heart in other cases.  True perfection can only be attributed to God.  He needs nothing from us and He is absolutely self-sufficient.  It is interesting that the stone for the original altar and Solomon's temple were uncut (shalem)."  (Lexicon to the Old and New Testaments, in The Hebrew-Greek Key Study Bible, 1984, ed.
