CHAPTER 19

19:1 Vaidaber YHWH el-Mosheh v'el-Aharon, lemor,  2 "Zot chukkat ha-Torah which YHWH has commanded.  Daber el-b'nei Yisra'el to bring you a red heifer without spot, in which is no defect, and which was never yoked.  3 You shall give her el-El'azar ha-kohen, and he shall bring her outside of the camp, and one shall kill her before his face.  4 El'azar ha-kohen shall take some of her blood with his finger, and sprinkle her blood toward the front of the Ohel Mo`ed seven times.  5 One shall burn the heifer in his sight; her skin, and her meat, and her blood, with her dung, shall he burn.  6 Ha-kohen shall take cedar wood, hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the middle of the burning of the heifer.  7 Then ha-cohen shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe his basar ba-mayim, and afterward he shall come into the camp, v'tameh ha-kohen ad-ha-arev.  8 He who burns her shall wash his clothes ba-mayim, and bathe his basar ba-mayim, (and shall be) tameh ad-ha-arev.  9 "Ish tahor shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up outside of the camp b'maqom tahor; and it shall be kept la-adat b'nei Yisra'el for use in water for cleansing impurity.  Chattat hi.  10 He who gathers the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes, and be tameh ad-ha-arev.  It shall be to b'nei Yisra'el v'la-ger who lives as a foreigner among them, l' chukkat olam.

19:11 "He who touches the dead, l'chol nefesh adam [body of any (dead) man] (shall be) tameh shiv'at yamim.  12 He shall purify himself ba-yom ha-sh'lishi, u'va-yom ha-sh'vi'i (he shall be) tahor; but if he doesn't purify himself ba-yom ha-sh'lishi, u'va-yom ha-sh'vi'i, he shall not be tahor.  13 Whoever touches a dead person, nefesh ha-adam who has died, and doesn't purify himself, defiles Mishkan YHWH; and ha-nefesh ha-hi shall be cut off mi-Yisra'el; because the water for impurity was not sprinkled on him, he shall be tameh.  His uncleanness is yet on him.

19:14 "Zot ha-torah ha-adam who dies b'ohel: kol ha-ba el-ha-ohel v'khol asher ba-ohel, shall be tameh shiv`at yamim.  15 Every open vessel, which has no covering bound on it, tameh hu.  16 "Whoever al-p'nei ha-sadeh touches one who is slain with a sword, or a dead body, or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be tameh shiv`at yamim.  17 "For ha-tameh, they shall take of the ashes of the burning of ha-chattat; and mayim chayyim shall be poured on them in a vessel.  18 Ish tahor shall take hyssop, dip it ba-mayim, and sprinkle it al-ha-ohel, on all the vessels, on ha-nafshot who were there, and on him who touched the bone, or the slain, or the dead, or the grave.  19 Ha-tahor shall sprinkle al-ha-tameh ba-yom ha-shlishi u'va-yom ha-sh'vi`i, u'va-yom ha-sh'vi`i, he shall purify him.  He shall wash his clothes and bathe himself ba-mayim, and v'taher ba-arev.

19:20 But ha-ish who shall be tameh, and shall not purify himself, ha-nefesh ha-hi shall be cut off from among ha-qahal, because he has defiled Mikdash YHWH.  The water for impurity has not been sprinkled on him.  Tameh hu.  21 It shall be a chukkat olam to them.  He who sprinkles the water for impurity shall wash his clothes, and he who touches the water for impurity shall be tameh ad-ha-arev.  22 "Whatever ha-tameh (person) touches shall be tameh; and ha-nefesh that touches it shall be tameh ad-ha-arev."

CHAPTER 20

20:1 Va-yavo b'nei Yisra'el kol-ha-edah midbar Tzin ba-chodesh ha-rishon.  Ha-am stayed b'Kadesh.  Miryam died there, and was buried there.

20:2 V'lo ha-yah mayim la-edah; and they assembled themselves together against Mosheh and against Aharon.  3 The people quarreled with Mosheh, and spoke, saying, "We wish that we had died when our brothers died before YHWH!  4 Why have you brought qahal YHWH el-midbar hazeh, that we should die there, we and our animals?  5 Why have you made us to come up mi-Mitzrayim, to bring us el-ha-maqom ha-ra hazeh?  Lo m'qom zera, or of figs, or of gefen, or of pomegranates; u'mayim ayin to drink."  6 Va-yavo Mosheh v'Aharon mi-p'nei ha-qahal el-petach Ohel Mo`ed, and fell on their faces; v'kavod YHWH appeared to them.  7 Vaidaber YHWH el-Mosheh, lemor,  8 "Take the rod, and assemble ha-edah, attah v'Aharon your brother, and speak el-ha-sela before their eyes, that it pour out its mayim.  You shall bring to them mayim min-ha-sela; so you shall give ha-edah and their livestock drink."  9 Mosheh took the rod from before YHWH, as he commanded him.

20:10 Mosheh v'Aharon gathered ha-qahal el-p'nei ha-sela, vayomer to them, "Hear now, you rebels!  Min-ha-sela hazeh shall we bring mayim for you?"  11 Mosheh lifted up his hand, and struck ha-sela with his rod twice, and mayim came out abundantly.  Ha-edah and their livestock drank.  12 Vayomer YHWH el-Mosheh v'el-Aharon, "Because you didn't believe in me, to sanctify me in the eyes of b'nei Yisra'el, therefore you shall not bring ha-qahal hazeh el-ha-aretz which I have given them."  13 These are the waters of M'rivah ["place of strife"], because b'nei Yisra'el strove with YHWH, and he was sanctified in them.

20:14 Mosheh sent mal'akhim mi-Kadesh el-melekh Edom, saying: "Your brother Yisra'el says: You know all the travail that has happened to us;  15 how our fathers went down into Mitzrayim, and we lived b'Mitzrayim yamim rabbim.  And Mitzrayim mistreated us and our fathers.  16 When we cried to YHWH, he heard our voice, sent a mal'akh, and brought us out of Mitzrayim.  V'hinneh, anachnu b'Kadesh, a city in the edge of your border.  17 "Please let us pass through your aretz.  We will not pass through sadeh or through kerem, neither will we drink from the water of the wells.  We will go along derekh ha-melekh.  We will not turn away to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed your border."  18 Vayomer Edom to him, "You shall not pass through me, lest I come out with the sword against you."  19 Vayomer b'nei Yisra'el to him, "We will go up by the highway; and if we drink your water, I and my livestock, then I will give its price.  Only let me, without doing anything else, pass through on my feet."  20 Vayomer, "You shall not pass through."  Edom came out against him with many people, and with a strong hand.  21 Thus Edom refused to give Yisra'el passage through his border, so Yisra'el turned away from him.

20:22 They traveled from Kadesh, and b'nei Yisra'el kol ha-edah came to Hor ha-har.  23 Vayomer YHWH el-Mosheh v'el-Aharon b'Hor ha-har, by the border of eretz Edom, lemor,  24 "Aharon shall be gathered to his people; for he shall not enter el ha-aretz which I have given to b'nei Yisra'el, because you rebelled against my word [lit. "mouth"] at the waters of M'rivah.  25 Take Aharon v'-et-El`azar b'no, and bring them up to Hor ha-har;  26 and strip Aharon of his garments, and put them on El`azar b'no,  v'Aharon shall be gathered, and shall die there."  27 Mosheh did as YHWH commanded.  They went up el-Hor ha-har in the sight of kol ha-edah.  28 Mosheh stripped Aharon of his garments, and put them on El`azar b'no, and Aharon died there b'rosh ha-har, and Mosheh v'El`azar came down min-ha-har.  29 When kol ha-edah saw that Aharon was dead, they wept for Aharon thirty days, kol beit Yisra'el.

CHAPTER 21

21:1 Ha-K'na`ani, melekh Arad, who lived ba-negev, heard that Yisra'el came by derekh ha-Atarim.  He fought against Yisra'el, and took some of them captive.  2 Yisra'el vowed a neder la-YHWH vayomar, "If you will indeed deliver ha-am hazeh into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities."  3 YHWH listened b'qol Yisra'el, and delivered up ha-K'na`ani; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities.  They called shem ha-maqom Chormah ["asylum"].

21:4 They traveled me-Hor ha-har, derekh Yam Suf, to go around Eretz Edom; nefesh ha-am was very discouraged because of ha-derekh.  5 Vaidaber ha-am b'Elohim u'v'Mosheh: "Why have you brought us up mi-Mitzrayim la-mut ba-midbar, ki ein lechem v'ein mayim, and our nefesh loathes this contemptible lechem!"  6 YHWH sent venomous snakes among the people, and they bit the people.  Am rav mi-Yisra'el died.  7 V'yavo ha-am el-Mosheh vayomru, "We have sinned, because we have spoken against YHWH and against you.  Pray to YHWH, that he take away the serpents from us."  Mosheh prayed for ha-am.  8 Vayomer YHWH el-Mosheh, "Make a saraf [a fiery serpent], and set it on a pole.  It shall happen that everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live."  9 Mosheh made a "nachash n'choshet, and set it on the pole.  If a nachash had bitten any man, when he looked at the nachash n'choshet, he lived.  10 B'nei Yisra'el traveled, and encamped b'Ovot.  11 They traveled from Ovot, and encamped b`Iyei-Ha`avarim, ba-midbar asher al-p'nei Moav, toward the rising of ha-shamesh.  12 From there they traveled, and encamped in the valley of Zered.  13 From there they traveled, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon, asher ba-midbar that comes out of the border of ha-Emori; for the Arnon is the border of Moav, ben Moav u'ven ha-Emori.  14 Therefore it is said in the book of the Wars of YHWH, "Vahev b'Sufah, the valleys of Arnon,  15 the slope of the valleys that incline toward the dwelling of Ar, leans on the border of Moav."

21:16 From there they traveled to Be'er; that is the well of which YHWH said to Mosheh, "Gather the people together, and I will give them mayim."  17 Then Yisra'el sang ha-shir hazot: "Spring up, be'er!  Sing to it,  18 be'er, which the sarim dug, which the nobles of ha-am dug, with the scepter, and with their poles." Mi-midbar they traveled to Mattanah; 19 u'mi-Mattanah (to) Nachaliel; u'mi-Nachaliel (to) Bamot; 20 u'mi-Bamot (to) ha-gei asher bi's'deh Moav, (to) rosh ha-Pisgah, which looks down on the desert.

21:21 Yisra'el sent malakhim el-Sichon, melekh ha-Emori, lemor,  22 "Let me pass through your eretz.  We will not turn away b'sadeh u'v'kerem.  We will not drink of the water of the wells.  B'derekh ha-melekh we will go, until we have passed your border."  23 Sichon would not allow Yisra'el to pass through his border, but Sichon gathered all his people together, and went out against Yisra'el into ha-midbar, and came to Yahtzah.  He fought against Yisra'el . 24 Yisra'el struck him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his eretz me-Arnon ad-Yabbok, ad-b'nei Ammon; for the border of b'nei Ammon was fortified.  25 Yisra'el took all these cities.  Yisra'el lived in all the cities of ha-Emori, b'Cheshbon, and in all its villages.  26 Ki Cheshbon ir Sichon, melekh ha-Emori hi, who had fought against melekh Moav ha-rishon, and taken all his eretz out of his hand, ad-Arnon.  27 Therefore those who speak in moshlim say,
"Come to Cheshbon.  Let be built and established ir Sichon;
28 for a fire has gone out me-Cheshbon,
a flame mi-kiryat Sichon.
It has devoured Ar Moav,
ba'alei bamot Arnon.
29 Oy to you, Moav!
You are undone, am-Chemosh!
He has given his banim as fugitives,
and his banot into captivity,
l'melekh Emori, Sichon.
30 We have shot at them.  Cheshbon has perished even to Divon.
We have laid waste even to Nofach, which reaches to Med'va."

21:31 And Yisra'el lived b'eretz ha-Emori.  32 Mosheh sent to spy out Yazer.  They took its villages, and drove out ha-Emori who were there.  33 They turned and went up by derekh ha-Bashan, and Og, melekh ha-Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Ed'rei.  34 Vayomer YHWH el-Mosheh, "Don't fear him, for I have delivered him into your hand, with all his people, and his land.  You shall do to him as you did to Sichon, melekh ha-Emori, who lived at Cheshbon."  35 So they struck him, with his banim and all his people, until there were no survivors; and they possessed his land.

CHAPTER 22

22:1 B'nei Yisra'el traveled, and encamped in the plains of Moav across the Yarden (at) Y'recho.

(40) PARASHAT BALAK
Balak
22:2 - 25:9

2 Balak ben-Tzippor saw all that Yisra'el had done to ha-Emori.  3 Moav was very afraid of the people, because they were many.  Moav was distressed mi-p'nei b'nei Yisra'el.  4 Vayomer Moav el-ziqnei Midyan, "Now ha-qahal will lick up all that is around us, as the ox licks up the grass of ha-sadeh."  Balak ben-Tzippor (was) melekh Moav at that time.  5 He sent mal'akhim el-Bil`am ben-B`or and to P'tor asher el-ha-nahar asher b'nei amo, to call him, lemor, "Hinneh, a people come mi-Mitzrayim.  Hinneh, they cover the surface of ha-aretz, and they are staying opposite me.  6 Please come now therefore, and curse this people for me; for they are too mighty for me.  Perhaps I shall prevail, that we may strike them, and that I may drive them min-ha-aretz; for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed."

22:7 Ziqnei Moav v'ziqnei Midyan departed with the rewards of divination in their hand.  They came to Bil`am, and spoke to him divrei Valak.  8 Vayomer to them, "Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as YHWH shall speak to me."  Sarei Moav stayed with Bil`am.  9 Va-yavo Elohim el-Bil`am, vayomer, "Mi ha-anashim ha-eleh with you?"  10 Vayomer Bil`am el-ha-Elohim, "Balak ben-Tzippor, melekh Moav, has sent to me (saying),  11 'Hinneh, ha-am that has come mi-Mitzrayim covers the surface of ha-aretz.  Now, come curse me them.  Perhaps I shall be able to fight against them, and shall drive them out.'"  12 Vayomer Elohim el-Bil`am, "You shall not go with them.  You shall not curse ha-am, for they are blessed."  13 Bil`am rose up ba-boqer, vayomer el-sarei Valak, "Go to your eretz; for YHWH refuses to permit me to go with you."  14 Sarei Moav rose up, and they went to Balak, vayomru, "Bil`am refuses to come with us."

22:15 Balak again sent sarim rabbim, and more honorable than they.  16 They came to Bil`am vayomru to him, "Balak ben Tzippor says, 'Please let nothing hinder you from coming to me,  17 for I will promote to you kavod me'od, and whatever you say to me I will do.  Please come therefore, and curse ha-am hazeh for me.'"  18 Bil`am answered avdei Balak, "If Balak would give me his bayit full of kesef v'zahav, I can't go beyond pi YHWH Elohai, to do less or more.  19 Now therefore please stay here ha-lailah as well, that I may know what else YHWH will speak to me."  20 Va-yavo Elohim el-Bil`am lailah, vayomer to him, "If ha-anashim have come to call you, rise up, go with them; but only ha-davar which I speak to you, that you shall do."

22:21 Bil`am rose up ba-boqer, and saddled his aton, and went im-sarim Mo'av.  22 The anger of Elohim burned because he went; and mal'akh YHWH placed himself ba-derekh as a satan against him.  Now he was riding on his aton, and his two servants were with him.  23 Ha-aton saw mal'akh YHWH standing ba-derekh, with his sword drawn in his hand; and ha-aton turned min-ha-derekh, and went ba-sadeh, and Bil`am struck ha-aton, to turn her into ha-derekh.  24 Then mal'akh YHWH stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, gader mizeh v'gader mizeh [a wall on this side and a wall on that side].  25 Ha-aton saw mal'akh YHWH, and she thrust herself to the wall, and crushed the foot of Bil`am against the wall.  He struck her again.  26 Mal'akh YHWH went further, and stood in a narrow place, where there was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.  27 Ha-aton saw mal'akh YHWH, and she lay down under Bil`am.  Bil`am's anger burned, and he struck ha-aton with his staff.  28 YHWH opened the mouth of ha-aton, vatomer l'Bil`am, "What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?"  29 Vayomer Bil`am la-aton, "Because you have mocked me, I wish there were a sword in my hand, for now I would have killed you."  30 Vatomer ha-aton el-Bil`am, "Am I not your aton, on which you have ridden all your life long ad ha-yom hazeh?  Was I ever in the habit of doing so to you?" He said, "No."

22:31 Then YHWH opened the eyes of Bil`am, and he saw mal'akh YHWH standing ba-derekh, with his sword drawn in his hand; and he bowed his head, and fell on his face.  32 Vayomer Mal'akh YHWH to him, "Why have you struck your aton these three times?  Hinneh, I have come out l'satan, because ha-derekh is perverse before me.  33 Ha-aton saw me and turned away before me these three times.  Unless she had turned away from me, surely now I would have killed you, and saved her alive."  34 Vayomer Bil`am el-mal'akh YHWH, "I have sinned; for I didn't know that you stood ba-derekh against me.  Now therefore, if it displeases you, I will go back again."  35 Vayomer mal'akh YHWH el-Bil`am, "Go with ha-anashim; but only ha-davar that I shall speak to you, that you shall speak."  So Bil`am went im-sarei Balak.

22:36 When Balak heard that Bil`am had come, he went out to meet him el-ir Mo'av, which is on the border of Arnon, which is in the utmost part of the border.  37 Vayomer Balak el-Bil`am, "Didn't I earnestly send for you to summon you?  Why didn't you come to me?  Am I not able indeed to promote you to kavod?"  38 Vayomer Bil`am el-Balak, "Hinneh, I have come to you.  Have I now any power at all daber anything?  Ha-davar that Elohim puts in my mouth, that shall I speak."  39 Bil`am went with Balak, and they came to Qiryat Chuzoth.  40 Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep, and sent to Bil`am, v'la-sarim who were with him.

22:41 Va'y'hi ba-boqer that Balak took Bil`am, and brought him up into Bamot Ba'al; and he saw from there the remotest of ha-am.

CHAPTER 23

23:1 Vayomer Bil`am el-Balak, "Build here seven miz'b'chot for me, and prepare here seven bulls and seven rams for me."  2 Balak did as Bil`am had spoken; and Balak u'Vil`am offered on every mizbeach a bull and a ram.  3 Vayomer Bil`am l'Valak, "Stand by your olah, and I will go.  Perhaps YHWH will come to meet me.  Whatever he shows me I will tell you."  He went to a bare height.  4 Elohim met Bil`am vayomer to him, "I have prepared the seven miz'b'chot, and I have offered up a bull and a ram on every mizbeach."  5 YHWH put a davar in the mouth of Bil`am vayomer, "Return to Balak, and thus you shall speak."  6 He returned to him, v'hinneh, he was standing by his olah, hu v'khol sarei Mo'av.  7 He took up his mashal vayomar,
"Min Aram has Balak brought me,
melekh Mo'av from the mountains of the East.
Come, curse Ya`akov for me.
Come, defy Yisra'el.
8 How shall I curse whom Elohim has not cursed?
How shall I defy whom YHWH has not defied?
9 For from the top of the rocks I see him.
From the hills I see him.
Behold, it is a people that dwells alone,
and shall not be listed among ha-goyim.
10 Who can count the dust of Ya`akov,
or count the fourth part of Yisra'el?
Let me die the death of the righteous!
Let my last end be like his!"

23:11 Vayomer Balak el-Bil`am, "What have you done to me?  I took you to curse my enemies, v'hinneh, you have blessed them altogether."  12 Vaya`an vayomar, "Must I not take heed to speak that which YHWH puts in my mouth?"

23:13 Vayomer Balak to him, "Please come with me to another place, where you may see them.  You shall see just part of them, and shall not see them all.  Curse them from there for me."  14 He took him into s'deh Tzofim, el-rosh ha-Pisgah, and built shiv`ah miz'b'chot, and offered up a bull and a ram on every mizbeach.  15 Vayomer el-Balak, "Stand here by your olah, while I go to a meeting yonder (with Elohim)."  16 YHWH met Bil`am, and put a davar in his mouth, vayomer, "Return to Balak, and thus you shall say."  17 He came to him, v'hinneh, he was standing by his olah, v'sarei Mo'av with him.  Vayomer Balak to him, "Ma-diber YHWH?"  18 He took up his mashal, vayomar,
"Rise up, Balak, and hear!
Listen to me, you son of Tzippor.
19 Lo ish El, that he should lie,
u'ven adam, that he should repent.
Has he said, and will he not do it?
Or has he spoken, and will he not make it good?
20 Hinneh, I have received (a command) to bless.
He has blessed, and I can't reverse it.
21 He has not seen iniquity b'Ya`akov.
Neither has he seen perverseness b'Yisra'el.
YHWH his Elohim is with him.
The shout of a melekh is among them.
22 El brings them mi-Mitzrayim.
He has as it were the strength of the wild ox.
23 Surely there is no enchantment b'Ya`akov;
Neither is there any divination b'Yisra'el.
Now it shall be said l'Ya`akov u'l'Yisra'el,
'What has El done!'
24 Behold, a people rises up as a lioness.
As a lion he lifts himself up.
He shall not lie down until he eats of the prey,
and drinks the blood of the slain."

25 Vayomer Balak el-Bil`am, "Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all."  26 Vaya'an Bil`am vayomer el-Balak, "Didn't I tell you, saying, 'Kol asher y'daber YHWH, that I must do?'"  27 Vayomer Balak el-Bil`am, "Come now, I will take you el-maqom acher; perhaps it will please ha-Elohim that you may curse them for me from there."  28 Balak took Bil`am rosh ha-P`or, that looks down on the desert.  29 Vayomer Bil`am el-Balak, "Build shiv`ah miz'b'chot for me here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me here."  30 Balak did as Bil`am had said, and offered up a bull and a ram ba-mizbeach.

CHAPTER 24

24:1 When Bil`am saw that it pleased YHWH to bless Yisra'el, he didn't go, as at the other times, to use divination, but he set his face el-ha-midbar.  2 Bil`am lifted up his eyes, and he saw Yisra'el dwelling according to their tribes; and ruach Elohim came on him.  3 He took up his mashal, vayomer,
"N'um Bil`am b'no B`or,
the man whose eyes are open says;
4 he says, who hears the words of El,
who sees the vision of Shaddai,[♦]
fallen down, yet with opened eyes :
5 How goodly are your ohalim, Ya`akov,
and your dwellings, Yisra'el!
6 As valleys they are spread out,
as gardens by the riverside,
as aloes which YHWH has planted,
as cedar trees beside mayim.
7 Mayim shall flow from his buckets.
His zera shall be b'mayim rabbim.
His melekh shall be higher than Agag.
His malkhut shall be exalted.
8 El brings him mi-Mitzrayim.
He has as it were the strength of the wild ox.
He shall consume the goyim his adversaries,
shall break their bones in pieces,
and pierce them with his arrows.
9 He couched, he lay down as a lion,
as a lioness; who shall rouse him up?
Blessed be everyone who blesses you,
And cursed be everyone who curses you."

24:10 The anger of Balak burned against Bil`am, and he struck his hands together.  Vayomer Balak el-Bil`am, "I called you to curse my enemies, and, behold, you have altogether blessed them these three times.  11 Therefore, flee to your place, now!  I thought to promote you to great kavod; v'hinneh, YHWH has kept you back mi-kavod."  12 Vayomer Bil`am el-Balak, "Didn't I also tell your malakhim whom you sent to me, saying,  13 ' If Balak would give me his bayit full of kesef v'zahav, I can't go beyond pi YHWH, to do either tovah o ra`ah from my own mind.  I will say what YHWH says'?  14 Now, hinneh, I go to my people.  Come, I will inform you what ha-am hazeh shall do to your people b'acharit ha-yamim."  15 He took up his mashal, vayomar,
"N'um Bil`am b'no B'or,
the man whose eye is open says;
16 he says, who hears the words of El,
knows the knowledge of Elyon,
and who sees the vision of Shaddai, Fallen down, yet with opened eyes:
17 I see him, but not now.
I see him, but not near.
There will come kokhav mi-Ya`akov.
A scepter will rise mi-Yisra'el,
and shall strike through the corners of Mo'av,
and crush kol b'nei Shet.
18 Edom shall be a possession.
Se`ir, his enemies, also shall be a possession,
while Yisra'el does valiantly.
19 Mi-Ya`akov shall one have dominion,
and shall destroy the remnant from the city."

24:20 He looked at `Amalek, and took up his mashal, vayomar, "Reshit goyim `Amalek,
But his latter end shall come to destruction."

24:21 He looked at ha-Keini, and took up his mashal, vayomar,
"Your dwelling place is strong.
Your nest is set ba-selah.
22 Nevertheless Kayin shall be wasted,
until Asshur carries you away captive."

24:23 He took up his mashal, vayomar,
"Oy, who shall live when El does this?
24 But ships shall come from the coast of Kittim.
They shall afflict Asshur, and shall afflict Ever.
He also shall come to destruction."

24:25 Bil`am rose up, and went and returned to his maqom; and Balak also went on his derekh.

25:1 Yisra'el stayed in Shittim; and the people began to play the prostitute with b'not Mo'av;  2 for they called the people to the sacrifices of their elohim.  The people ate and bowed down to their elohim.  3 Yisra'el joined himself to Ba`al P`or, and the anger of YHWH burned against Yisra'el.  4 Vayomer YHWH el-Mosheh, "Take kol roshei ha-am, and hang them up to YHWH before ha-shemesh, that the fierce anger of YHWH may turn away mi-Yisra'el."  5 Vayomer Mosheh el-shoftei Yisra'el, "Kill his anashim who have joined themselves l'Ba`al P`or."

25:6 V'hinneh, ish mi-b'nei Yisra'el came and brought to his brothers a Midyanit (woman) in the sight of Mosheh, and in the sight of kol-adat b'nei Yisra'el, while they were weeping at petach Ohel Mo`ed.  7 When Pinchas, ben-El`azar, ben-Aharon ha-kohen, saw it, he rose up from the middle of ha-edah, and took a spear in his hand.  8 Va-yavo achar ish Yisra'el into the pavilion, and thrust both of them through, ish Yisra'el, v'et ishshah through her body.  So the plague was stopped among b'nei Yisra'el.  9 Those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.

31:1 Vaidaber YHWH el-Mosheh, lemor,  2 "Avenge b'nei Yisra'el on ha-Midyanim.  Afterward you shall be gathered to your people."  3 Vaidaber Mosheh el-ha-am, lemor, "Arm anashim from among you for war, that they may go against Midyan, to execute the vengeance of YHWH b'Midyan.  4 You shall send one thousand out of every matteh, l'khol mattot Yisra'el, to the war."  5 So there were delivered, out of the thousands of Yisra'el, a thousand from every matteh, twelve thousand armed for war.  6 Mosheh sent them, one thousand of every matteh, to the war with Pin'chas ben-El`azar ha-kohen, to the war, with the vessels of ha-Kodesh and the trumpets for the alarm in his hand.  7 They fought against Midyan, as YHWH commanded Mosheh.  They killed every male.  8 They killed malkhei Midyan with the rest of their slain: Evi v'et Rekem v'et Tzur v'et Chur v'et Reva, the five malkhei Midyan; v'et Bil`am ben-B`or with the sword.  9 B'nei Yisra'el took the women of Midyan captive with their little ones; and all their livestock, all their flocks, and all their goods, they took as plunder.  10 All their cities in the places in which they lived, and all their encampments, they burned with fire.  11 They took all the captives, and all the plunder, ba-adam u'va-b'hemah.  12 They brought the captives with the prey and the plunder, to Mosheh, and to El`azar ha-kohen, v'el adat b'nei-Yisra'el, to the camp at the plains of Moav, asher al-Yarden Y'recho.

31:13 Mosheh v'El`azar ha-kohen, with all the princes of ha-edah, went out to meet them outside of the camp.  14 Mosheh was angry with the officers of the army, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, who came from the service of the war.  15 Vayomer Mosheh to them, "Have you saved all the women alive?  16 Behold, these caused b'nei Yisra'el bi'd'var Bil`am, to commit trespass against YHWH in the matter of P`or, and so the plague was ba-`adat YHWH.  17 Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill kol ishshah who has known man by lying with him.  18 But all the girls, who have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.  19 "Encamp outside of the camp for seven days.  Whoever has killed any nefesh, and whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves on the third day and on the seventh day, you and your captives.  20 You shall purify every garment, and all that is made of skin, and all work of goats' hair, and all things made of wood."

31:21 Vayomer El`azar ha-kohen to the men of war who went to the battle, "Zot chukkat ha-Torah which YHWH has commanded Mosheh:  22 however ha-zahav v'et ha-kasef v'et ha-n'choshet, the iron, the tin, and the lead,  23 everything that may withstand ha-esh, you shall make to go through ha-esh, and it shall be tahor; nevertheless it shall be purified with the water for impurity.  All that doesn't withstand ha-esh you shall make to go through ha-mayim.  24 You shall wash your clothes ba-yom ha-sh'vi'i, and you shall be tahor.  Afterward you shall come into the camp."

31:25 Vayomer YHWH el-Mosheh, lemor,  26 "Count the plunder that was taken, ba-adam u'va'b'hemah, attah v'El`azar ha-kohen, v'roshei avot ha-`edah;  27 and divide the plunder into two parts: between the men skilled in war, who went out to battle, u'vein kol-ha-edah.  28 Levy a tribute to YHWH of the men of war who went out to battle: echad nefesh of five hundred; min-ha-adam, of the cattle, u'min ha-chamorim, and of the flocks.  29 Take it from their half, and give it l'El`azar ha-kohen, (for a) t'rumat YHWH.  30 Of the half of b'nei Yisra'el, you shall take one drawn out of every fifty, min-ha-adam, of the cattle, min-ha-chamorim, of the flocks, of all the livestock, and give them to ha-L'vi'im, who perform the duty of mishkan YHWH."  31 Mosheh v'El`azar ha-kohen did as YHWH commanded Mosheh.

31:32 Now the plunder, over and above the booty which the men of war took, was six hundred seventy-five thousand sheep,  33 seventy-two thousand head of cattle,  34 sixty-one thousand chamorim,  35 and thirty-two thousand nefesh adam in all, min-ha-nashim who had not known man by lying with him.  36 The half, which was the portion of those who went out to war, was in number three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep;  37 and the tribute to YHWH of the sheep was six hundred seventy-five.  38 The cattle were thirty-six thousand, of which the tribute to YHWH was seventy-two.  39 Chamorim were thirty thousand five hundred, of which the tribute to YHWH was sixty-one.  40 Nefesh adam were sixteen thousand, of whom the tribute to YHWH was thirty-two persons.  41 Mosheh gave the tribute, which was t'rumat YHWH, l'El`azar ha-kohen, as YHWH commanded Mosheh.

31:42 The half of b'nei Yisra'el, which Mosheh divided off from the men who fought  43 (now the congregation's half was three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep,  44 thirty-six thousand head of cattle,  45 thirty thousand five hundred chamorim,  46 and sixteen thousand nefesh adam),  47 even of the half of b'nei Yisra'el, Mosheh took one drawn out of every fifty, min-ha-adam u'min-ha-b'hemah, and gave them la-L'vi'im, who performed the duty of mishkan YHWH, as YHWH commanded Mosheh.

31:48 The officers who were over the thousands of the army, the captains of thousands, and the captains of hundreds, came near to Mosheh.  49 Vayomru el-Mosheh, "Your avadim have taken the sum of the men of war who are under our command, and there lacks not one man of us.  50 We have brought korban YHWH, what every man found: ornaments of zahav, armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and necklaces, to make atonement for our nafshot lif'nei YHWH."  51 Mosheh v'El`azar ha-kohen took ha-zahav, all worked jewels.  52 Kol zahav ha-t'rumah that they offered up to YHWH, of the captains of thousands, and of the captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred fifty shekel*.  53 The men of war had taken booty, every man for himself.  54 Mosheh v'El`azar ha-kohen took ha-zahav of the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it el-Ohel Mo`ed for a memorial li'v'nei Yisra'el lif'nei YHWH.

CHAPTER 32

32:1 Li'v'nei R'uven u'li'v'nei Gad had a very great multitude of livestock.  They saw eretz Yazer, v'et-eretz Gil`ad.  V'hinneh, ha-maqom was a place for livestock.  2 B'nei Gad u'v'nei R'uven came and spoke to Mosheh v'el-El`azar ha-kohen, and to the princes of ha-`edah, lemor,  3 "`Atarot v'Divon v'Yazer v'Nimrah v'Cheshbon v'El`aleh u'S'vam u'N'vo u'V`on,  4 ha-aretz asher YHWH struck lif'nei adat Yisra'el, eretz for livestock; and your avadim have livestock."  5 Vayomru, "If we have found favor in your sight, let ha-aretz ha-zot be given to your avadim for a possession.  Don't bring us over ha-Yarden."

32:6 Vayomer Mosheh li'v'nei Gad u'li'v'nei R'uven, "Shall your brothers go to war while you sit here?  7 Why do you discourage the heart of b'nei Yisra'el from going over el-ha-aretz which YHWH has given them?  8 Your fathers did so when I sent them mi-Kadesh Barnea to see ha-aretz.  9 For when they went up to the valley of Eshcol, and saw ha-aretz, they discouraged lev b'nei Yisra'el, that they should not go el-ha-aretz which YHWH had given them.  10 The anger of YHWH burned ba-yom ha-hu, and he swore, saying,  11 'Surely none of ha-anashim who came up mi-Mitzrayim, from twenty years old and upward, shall see ha-aretz which I swore l'Avraham, l'Yitzchak, u'l'Ya`akov; because they have not wholly followed me,  12 except Kalev ben-Y'funneh ha-K'nizzi, vi'Y'hoshua ben-Nun, because they have followed YHWH completely.'  13 And the anger of YHWH burned against Yisra'el, and he made them wander back and forth ba-midbar forty years, until kol ha-dor who had done evil in the sight of YHWH was consumed.  14 "Behold, you have risen up in your fathers' place, an increase of anashim chatta'im, to increase the fierce anger of YHWH toward Yisra'el.  15 For if you turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them ba-midbar; and you will destroy kol ha-am hazeh."

32:16 They came near to him, and said, "We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones;  17 but we ourselves will be ready armed to go lif'nei b'nei Yisra'el, until we have brought them to their place.  Our little ones shall dwell in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of ha-aretz.  18 We will not return to our houses until b'nei Yisra'el have all received their inheritance.  19 For we will not inherit with them on the other side of ha-Yarden and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on this side of ha-Yarden eastward."  20 Vayomer Mosheh to them: "If you will do this thing, if you will arm yourselves to go before YHWH to the war,  21 and every one of your armed men will pass over ha-Yarden lif'nei YHWH until he has driven out his enemies from before him,  22 and ha-aretz is subdued lif'nei YHWH; then afterward you shall return, and be clear of obligation to YHWH and to Yisra'el.  Then ha-aretz hazot shall be your possession lif'nei YHWH.  23 "But if you will not do so, hinmeh, you have sinned against YHWH; and be sure your chata'im will find you out.  24 Build cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which has proceeded out of your mouth."  25 Vayomer b'nei-Gad u'v'nei R'uven el-Mosheh,lemor, "Your avadim will do as adoni commands.  26 Our little ones, our nashim, our flocks, and all our b'hemot shall be there in the cities of ha-Gil`ad;  27 but your avadim will pass over, every man who is armed for war, lif'nei YHWH to battle, as adoni says."

32:28 So Mosheh commanded concerning them to El`azar ha-kohen v'et Y'hoshua ben-Nun, v'et roshei avot ha-mattot li'v'nei Yisra'el.  29 Vayomer Mosheh to them, "If b'nei Gad u'v'nei R'uven will pass with you over ha-Yarden, every man who is armed to battle lif'nei YHWH, and ha-aretz is subdued before you, then you shall give them eretz ha-Gil`ad for a possession;  30 but if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you b'eretz K'na`an."  31 B'nei Gad u'v'nei R'uven answered, saying, "As YHWH has said to your avadim, so will we do.  32 We will pass over armed lif'nei YHWH (into) eretz K'na`an, and the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us beyond ha-Yarden."

32:33 Mosheh gave to them, li'v'nei-Gad u'li'v'nei R'uven, and to the half-tribe of M'nassheh ben-Yosef, mamlekhet Sichon melekh ha-Emori, v'et-mamlekhet Og melekh ha-Bashan, ha-aretz, according to its cities and borders, even the cities of ha-aretz around.  34 B'nei Gad built Divon v-et-Atarot v'et-`Aro`er,  35 v'et-`At'rot Shofan v'et Yazer v'Yogb'hah,  36 v'et-Beit Nimrah v'et-Beit Haran: fortified cities and folds for sheep.  37 U'v'nei R'u'ven built Cheshbon v'et-El`aleh v'et-Kiryatayim,  38 v'et-N'vo v'et-Ba`al M`on, (their names being changed), v'et-Sivmah.  They gave other names to the cities which they built.  39 B'nei Makhir ben-M'nassheh went to Gil`ad and took it, and dispossessed ha-Emori who were therein.  40 Mosheh gave Gil`ad to Machir ben-M'nassheh; and he lived therein.  41 Yair ben-M'nassheh went and took its villages, and called them Chavvot Yair.  42 V'Novach went and took K'nat and its villages, and called it Novach after his own name.

35:9 Vaidaber YHWH el-Mosheh, lemor,  10 "Daber el-b'nei Yisra'el, and tell them, 'When you pass over ha-Yarden into eretz K'na`an,  11 then you shall appoint for yourselves cities to be cities of refuge for you, that the man slayer who kills any nefesh unwittingly may flee there.  12 The cities shall be for your refuge from the avenger, that the man slayer not die until he stands lif'nei ha-edah la-mishpat.  13 The cities which you shall give shall be for you six cities of refuge.  14 You shall give three cities beyond ha-Yarden, and you shall give three cities b'eretz K'na`an.  They shall be cities of refuge.  15 Li'v'nei Yisra'el, and for the stranger and for the foreigner living among them, shall these six cities be for refuge, that everyone who kills any nefesh unwittingly may flee there.

35:22 "'But if he shoved him suddenly without hostility, or hurled on him anything without lying in wait,  23 im b'khol even, by which a man may die, not seeing him, and cast it on him so that he died, and he was not his enemy and not seeking his harm,  24 then ha-edah shall judge between the striker and the avenger of blood according to ha-mishpachot ha-eleh.  25 Ha-edah shall deliver the man slayer out of the hand of the avenger of blood, and ha-edah shall restore him to his city of refuge, where he had fled.  He shall dwell therein until the death of ha-kohen ha-gadol, who was anointed b'shemen ha-kodesh.  26 "'But if the man slayer shall at any time go beyond the border of his city of refuge where he flees,  27 and the avenger of blood finds him outside of the border of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood kills the man slayer, he shall not be guilty of blood,  28 because he should have remained in his city of refuge until the death of ha-kohen ha-gadol.  But after the death of ha-kohen ha-gadol, the man slayer shall return into the land of his possession.

35:29 "'These things shall be l'chukkat ha-mishpat to you throughout your dorot in all your dwellings.  30 "'Whoever kills any nefesh, the murderer shall be slain based l'pi edim; v'ed echad shall not testify alone against any nefesh so that he dies.  31 "'Moreover you shall take no kofer for the nefesh of a murderer who is guilty of death.  He shall surely be put to death.  32 "'You shall take no kofer for him who has fled to his city of refuge, that he may come again to dwell in the land before the death of ha-kohen.  33 "'So you shall not pollute ha-aretz where you live; for blood pollutes ha-aretz.  No atonement can be made for ha-aretz, for the blood that is shed in it, but by the blood of him who shed it.  34 You shall not defile ha-aretz which you inhabit, where I dwell; for I, YHWH, dwell among b'nei Yisra'el.'"

36:5 Mosheh commanded b'nei Yisra'el `al-pi YHWH, lemor, "Mateh b'nei-Yosef speaks right.  6 Zeh ha-davar which YHWH commands concerning batot Tz'lof'chad, lemor, 'Let them be married to whom they think best, only they shall marry l'mishpachat mateh avihem.  7 So shall no inheritance of b'nei Yisra'el move mi-mateh el-mateh; for b'nei Yisra'el shall all keep the inheritance of mateh avotav.  8 Kol bat who possesses an inheritance mi-matot b'nei Yisra'el shall be wife to one of the mishpachah of the mateh of her father, that b'nei Yisra'el may each possess the inheritance of his fathers.  9 So shall no inheritance move mi-mateh l'mateh acher; for matot b'nei Yisra'el shall each keep his own inheritance.'"

36:10 B'not Tz'lof'chad did as YHWH commanded Mosheh:  11 for Machlah, Tir'tzah, v'Choglah, u'Milcah, v'No`ah, banot Tz'lof'chad, were nashim to their father's brothers' sons.  12 Mi-mishp'chot b'nei M'nassheh ben-Yosef they were nashim.  Their inheritance remained al-mateh mishpachot avihen.

36:13 Eleh ha-mitzvot v'ha-mishpatim which YHWH commanded b'yad Mosheh el-b'nei Yisra'el in the plains of Moav al-Yarden Y'recho.

[♦]
24:4:  The Tanakh never says "'the' Almighty" (ha-Shaddai); hence, it thereby treats "Almighty" as a proper name.
27:21:  Urim: part of the high priest's breastplate; lit. "lights."
33:7:  (Possible?) Pi Hachirot, from peh (6312), mouth + ha (the) + chirot (from Chirah [2437], a friend of Judah [from 2357 per NASBC, to be or grow white]; hence "Mouth of a White Place." (See photo "Nuweiba beach" at http://www.creationoutreach.com/id68.html)
34:5:  The "brook (river/stream/wadi) of Egypt" is NOT the Nile River.  Most Bibles that have maps in the back show this brook/river/stream/wadi just south of the southern boundary of Gaza.
This first map is NOT biblically accurate.
This one is much more likely correct.
