PEREQ א
CHAPTER 1

1:1 Eleh ha-d'varim asher diber Mosheh el-kol-Yisra'el beyond ha-Yarden ba-midbar, ba-`Aravah opposite Suf bein Paran u'vein Tofel v'Lavan v'Chatzerot v'Di Zahav.  2 It is eleven days' journey me-Chorev derekh ha-Se`ir `ad Kadesh Barnea.  3 In the fortieth year, in the eleventh month [Sh'vat], b'echad la-chodesh, diber Mosheh el-b'nei Yisra'el according to all that YHWH had given him in commandment to them,  4 after he had struck Sichon melekh ha-Emori who lived b'Cheshbon v'et `Og melekh ha-Bashan who lived b`Ashtarot b'Ed're`i.  5 Beyond ha-Yarden, b'eretz Moav, Mosheh began to declare ha-Torah hazot, lemor,  6 "YHWH Eloheinu spoke to us b'Chorev, lemor, ‘You have lived long enough ba-har hazeh.  7 Turn, and take your journey, and go to har ha-Emori and to all the places near there: ba-`Aravah, ba-har, u'v'sh'felah u'va-negev, by the seashore, eretz ha-K'na`ani, v'ha-L'vanon, `ad-ha-nahar ha-gadol, n'har P'rat.  8 Behold, I have set ha-aretz before you.  Go in and possess ha-aretz which YHWH swore to your fathers— l'Avraham, l'Yitz'chak, u'l'Ya`akov —to give to them and to their z'ro'im after them.' "

1:9 I spoke to you at that time, saying, "I am not able to bear you myself alone.  10 YHWH Eloheikhem has multiplied you, v'hinneh, you are today as the khokhvei ha-shamayim for multitude.  11 YHWH, Elohei avoteikhem, make you a thousand times as many as you are and bless you, as he has promised you!  12 How can I myself alone bear your problems, your burdens, and your strife?  13 Take anashim chakhamim of understanding who are respected among your tribes, and I will make them heads over you."  14 You answered me, and said, "The thing which you have spoken is good to do."  15 So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and respected men, and made them heads over you, captains of thousands, captains of hundreds, captains of fifties, captains of tens, and officers, according to your tribes.  16 I commanded your shoftim at that time, saying, "Hear cases between your brothers and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and the foreigner who is living with him.  17 You shall not show partiality ba-mishpat; you shall hear the small and the great alike.  You shall not be afraid of the face of man, ki ha-mishpat l'Elohim hu.  The case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it."  18 I commanded you at that time all the things which you should do.

1:19 We traveled me-Chorev and went through kol ha-midbar ha-gadol and terrible, which you saw, by derekh har ha-Emori, as YHWH Eloheinu commanded us; and we came ad Kadesh Barnea.  20 I said to you, "You have come `ad-har ha-Emori, which YHWH Eloheinu gives to us.  21 Behold, YHWH Eloheikha has set ha-aretz before you.  Go up, take possession, as YHWH Elohei avoteikha has spoken to you.  Don't be afraid, neither be dismayed."  22 You came near to me, every one of you, and said, "Let's send anashim lif'neinu, that they may search ha-aretz for us, and bring back to us word of the way by which we must go up, and the cities to which we shall come."  23 The thing pleased me well.  I took twelve of your anashim, ish echad for every tribe.  24 They turned and went up into the hill country, and came `ad-nachal Eshcol, and spied it out.  25 They took some of the p'ri ha-aretz in their hands and brought it down to us, and brought us word again, vayomru 'Tovah ha-aretz which YHWH Eloheinu gives to us.'

1:26 Yet you wouldn't go up, but rebelled against pi YHWH Eloheikhem.  27 You murmured in your ohelim, and said, "Because YHWH hated us, he has brought us me-eretz Mitzrayim, to deliver us b'yad ha-Emori to destroy us.  28 Where are we going up?  Our brothers have made our heart melt, saying, ‘`Am gadol and taller than we.  The cities are great and fortified ba-shamayim.  Moreover we have seen b'nei `Anakim there!' "  29 Then I said to you, "Don't be terrified.  Don't be afraid of them.  30 YHWH Eloheikhem, who goes before you, he will fight for you, according to all that he did for you b'Mitzrayim before your eyes,  31 u'va-midbar where you have seen how that YHWH Eloheikha carried you, as a man carries his son, b'khol ha-derekh that you went, until you came ad ha-maqom hazeh."  32 U'va-davar hazeh you didn't believe YHWH Eloheikhem,  33 who went before you ba-derekh, to seek out a place for you to pitch your tents in: ba-esh lailah, to show you by what way you should go, and in the cloud by day.

1:34 YHWH heard the voice of your d'varim and was angry, and swore, saying,  35 "Surely not one of anashim ha-eleh ha-dor ha-ra hazeh shall see ha-aretz ha-tovah which I swore to give l'avoteikhem,  36 except Calev ben-Yefunneh.  He shall see it.  I will give ha-aretz that he has trodden on to him and to his banim, because he has wholly followed YHWH."  37 Also YHWH was angry with me for your sakes, saying, "You also shall not go in there.  38 Y'hoshua ben-Nun, who stands before you, shall go in there.  Encourage him, for he shall cause Yisra'el to inherit it.  39 Moreover your little ones, whom you said would be captured or killed, your children, who ha-yom have no knowledge of tov va-ra, shall go in there.  I will give it to them, and they shall possess it.  40 But as for you, turn, and take your journey into ha-midbar (by) derekh (to) Yam Suf."

1:41 Then you answered and said to me, "We have sinned against YHWH.  We will go up and fight, according to all that YHWH Eloheinu commanded us."  Every man of you put on his weapons of war, and presumed to go up into ha-har.  42 Vayomer YHWH to me, "Tell them, ‘Don't go up and don't fight; for I am not among you, lest you be struck before your enemies.' "  43 So I spoke to you, and you didn't listen; but you rebelled against pi YHWH, and were presumptuous, and went up into ha-har.  44 Ha-Emori, who lived ba-har ha-hu, came out against you and chased you as ha-d'vorim do, and beat you down b'Se`ir `ad-Chormah.  45 You returned and wept lif'nei YHWH; but YHWH didn't listen to your voice, nor turn his ear to you.  46 So you stayed b'Kadesh yamim rabbim, according to the days that you remained.

PEREQ ב
CHAPTER 2

2:1 Then we turned, and took our journey ba-midbar derekh Yam Suf, as YHWH spoke to me; and we encircled Har Se`ir yamim rabbim.  2 Vayomer YHWH to me, lemor,  3 "You have encircled ha-har hazeh long enough.  Turn northward.  4 Command ha-`am, saying, ‘You are to pass through the border of your brothers, b'nei Esav, who dwell b'Se`ir; and they will be afraid of you.  Therefore be careful.  5 Don't contend with them; for I will not give you any of their eretz, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, because l'Esav I have given Har Se`ir for a possession.  6 You shall purchase food from them ba-kesef, that you may eat.  Also mayim you shall also buy from them ba-kesef, that you may drink.' "  7 For YHWH Eloheikha has blessed you in all the work of your hands.  He has known your walking through ha-midbar ha-gadol hazeh.  These forty years, YHWH Eloheikha has been with you.  You have lacked nothing.  8 So we passed by from our brothers b'nei Esav, who dwell b'Se`ir, mi-derekh ha-`Aravah me-Elat u'me-Etzyon Gaver.
We turned and passed by derekh midbar Moav.
9 Vayomer YHWH to me, "Don't bother Moav, neither contend with them in battle; for I will not give you any of his eretz for a possession, because li'v'nei Lot I have given Ar for a possession."  10 (Ha-Emim lived there before, `am gadol and numerous, and tall as the `Anakim.  11 These also are considered to be Refa'im, ka-`Anakim; but ha-Moavim call them Emim.  12 U'v'Se`ir dwelt ha-Chorim in the past, u'v'nei Esav succeeded them.  They destroyed them from before them, and lived in their place, as Yisra'el did l'eretz of his possession, which YHWH gave to them.)  13 "Now rise up, and cross over nachal Zared."  We went over nachal Zared.  14 The days in which we came mi-Kadesh Barnea until we had come over nachal Zared were thirty-eight years: until all the generation of the men of war were consumed from the middle of the camp, as YHWH swore to them.  15 V'gam yad-YHWH was against them, to destroy them from the middle of the camp, until they were consumed.

2:16 And it was that all the men of war were consumed and dead from among ha-`am,  17 Vayomer YHWH to me, lemor,  18 "You are to pass over Ar, the border of Moav, today.  19 When you come near the border of b'nei `Ammon, don't bother them, nor contend with them; for I will not give you any of eretz `Ammon for a possession, because I have given it to b'nei Lot for a possession."  20 (That also is considered eretz R'fa`im.  R'fa`im lived there in the past, but ha-`Ammonim call them Zamzummim,  21 `am gadol v'rav and tall, as `Anakim; but YHWH destroyed them from before them, and they succeeded them, and lived in their place;  22 as he did for b'nei Esav who dwell b'Se`ir, when he destroyed ha-Chori from before them; and they succeeded them, and lived in their place ad ha-yom hazeh.  23 V'ha-`Avvim, who lived in villages `ad-`Azza: Caftorim, who came mi-Caftor, destroyed them and lived in their place.)  24 "Rise up, take your journey, and pass over nachal Arnon.  Behold, I have given into your hand Sichon melekh Cheshbon ha-Emori, and his aretz; begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.  25 Today I will begin to put the dread of you and the fear of you `al-p'nei ha-`amim who are under kol-ha-shamayim, who shall hear the report of you, and shall tremble and be in anguish because of you."

2:26 I sent malakhim mi-midbar K'demot el-Sichon melekh Cheshbon, div'rei shalom, lemor,  27 "Let me pass through your eretz.  I will go ba-derekh ba-derekh [by way of the highway].  I will turn neither to the right hand nor to the left.  28 You shall sell me food ba-kesef, that I may eat; u'mayim ba-kesef, that I may drink.  Just let me pass through on my feet,  29 as b'nei `Esav who dwell b'Se`ir v'ha-Moavim who dwell b`Ar did to me; until I pass over ha-Yarden el-ha-aretz which YHWH Eloheinu gives us."  30 But Sichon melekh Cheshbon would not let us pass by him; for YHWH Eloheikha hardened his ruach and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into your hand, as it is today.  31 Vayomer YHWH to me, "Behold, I have begun to deliver up Sichon and his eretz before you.  Begin to possess, that you may inherit his eretz."  32 Then Sichon came out against us, hu v'khol `amo, to battle at Yah'tzah.  33 YHWH Eloheinu delivered him up before us; and we struck him, his banim, and kol `amo.  34 We took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed every inhabited city, v'ha-nashim and the little ones.  We left no one remaining.  35 Only ha-b'hemah we took for plunder for ourselves, with the plunder of the cities which we had taken.  36 Me-`Aro`er, which is on the edge of nachal Arnon v'ha-ir asher ba-nachal, v`ad-ha-Gil`ad, there was not a city too high for us.  YHWH Eloheinu delivered up all before us.  37 Only el-eretz b'nei-`Ammon you didn't come near: all the banks of nachal Yabbok, and the cities of ha-har, and wherever YHWH Eloheinu forbade us.

PEREQ ג
CHAPTER 3

3:1 Then we turned, and went up derekh ha-Bashan.  `Og melekh ha-Bashan came out against us, hu v'khol-amo, to battle at Ed're`i.  2 Vayomer YHWH to me, "Don't fear him; for I have delivered him, v'et-kol-`amo, and his eretz, into your hand.  You shall do to him as you did to Sichon melekh ha-Emori, who lived at Cheshbon."  3 So YHWH Eloheinu delivered into our hand gam et-`Og melekh ha-Bashan, v'et kol-`amo.  We struck him until no one was left to him remaining.  4 We took all his cities at that time.  There was not a city which we didn't take from them: shishim ir, all the region of Argov, mamlekhet `Og ba-Bashan.  5 All these were cities fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, in addition to a great many villages without walls.  6 We utterly destroyed them, as we did to Sichon melekh Cheshbon, utterly destroying every inhabited city, ha-nashim and the little ones.  7 V'khol-ha-b'hemah, and the plunder of the cities, we took for plunder for ourselves.  8 We took ha-aretz at that time mi-yad sh'nei malkhei ha-Emori who were beyond ha-Yarden, mi-nachal Arnon `ad-har Chermon.  9 (Tzidonim call Chermon Siryon, v'ha-Emori call it S'nir.)  10 We took all the cities of the plain, v'khol ha-Gil`ad v'khol ha-Bashan, `ad-Salchah v`Ed're`i, cities of mamlekhet `Og ba-Bashan.  11 (For only `Og melelk ha-Bashan remained of the remnant of ha-R'fa'im.  Hinneh, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron.  Isn't it b'Rabbat b'nei `Ammon?  Nine cubits was its length, and four cubits its width, after the cubit of a man.)

3:12 This land we took in possession at that time: me-`Aro`er, asher `al-nachal `Arnon, and half har-Gil`ad with its cities, I gave la-R'uveni v'la-Gadi;  13 and the rest of Gil`ad, v'khol ha-Bashan, mamlekhet `Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manassheh—all the region of ha-Argov l'khol-ha-Bashan; that is called eretz R'fa'im.  14 Ya'ir ben-M'nassheh took all the region of Argov, to the border of ha-G'shuri v'ha-Ma`akhati, and called them, ha-Bashan, after his own name, Chavvot Ya`ir, ad ha-yom hazeh15 U'l'Machir I gave ha-Gil`ad.  16 V'la-R'uveni v'la-Gadi I gave from ha-Gil`ad, v`ad-nachal Arnon, the middle of ha-nachal for a border, v'ad Yabbok ha-nachal, the border of b'nei `Ammon;  17 v'ha-`Aravah v'ha-Yarden and its border, mi-Kinneret v`ad yam ha`Aravah, yam ha-melakh, under the slopes of ha-Pisgah eastward.
3:18 I commanded you at that time, saying, "YHWH Eloheikhem has given you ha-aretz hazot to possess it.  All of you men of valor shall pass over armed before your brothers, b'nei Yisra'el.  19 But your nashim, and your little ones, and your livestock, (I know that you have much livestock), shall live in your cities which I have given you,  20 until YHWH gives rest to your brothers, as to you, and they also possess the land which YHWH Eloheikhem gives them beyond ha-Yarden.  Then you shall each return to his own possession, which I have given you."  21 I commanded Y'hoshua at that time, saying, "Your eyes have seen all that YHWH Eloheikhem has done li'sh'nei m'lakhim ha-eleh.  So shall YHWH do l'khol ha-mamlakhot where you go over.  22 You shall not fear them; for YHWH Eloheikhem himself fights for you."

(45) PARASHAT VA-ETCHANAN
And I pleaded
3:23 - 7:11

3:23 I begged YHWH at that time, saying,  24 "Adonai YHWH, you have begun to show your `eved your greatness, and your strong hand.  For mi-el ba-shamayim u'va-aretz that can do works like yours, and mighty acts like yours?  25 Please let me go over and see ha-aretz ha-tovah that is beyond ha-Yarden, ha-har ha-tov hazeh, v'ha-L'vanon."  26 But YHWH was angry with me because of you, and didn't listen to me; vayomer YHWH to me, "That is enough! Speak no more to me ba-davar hazeh.  27 Go up to rosh ha-Pisgah, and lift up your eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward, and see with your eyes; for you shall not go over ha-Yarden hazeh.  28 But commission Y'hoshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him; for he shall go over lif'nei ha-`am hazeh, and he shall cause them to inherit ha-aretz which you shall see."  29 So we stayed in the valley near Beit P`or.

PEREQ ד
CHAPTER 4

4:1 Now, Yisra'el, sh'ma el-ha-chukkim v'el-ha-mishhpatim which I teach you, to do them; that you may live, and go in and possess ha-aretz asher YHWH Elohei avoteikhem gives you.  2 You shall not add to ha-davar which I command you, neither shall you take away from it, that you may keep ha-mitzvot (of) YHWH Eloheikhem which I command you.  3 Your eyes have seen what YHWH did because of Ba`al P'or, ki khol-ha-ish who followed Ba`al P'or YHWH Eloheikha has destroyed from among you.  4 But you who were faithful to YHWH Eloheikhem are all alive today.  5 Behold, I have taught you chukkim u'mishpatim, even as YHWH Elohai commanded me, that you should do so in the middle of ha-aretz where you go in to possess it.  6 Keep therefore and do them; for this is your chokhmah and your understanding in the sight of ha-`amim who shall hear kol ha-chukkim ha-eleh and say, "Surely ha-goy ha-gadol hazeh is an `am chakham and understanding."  7 Ki mi-goy gadol is there that has an Elohim so near to them as YHWH Eloheinu is whenever we call on him?  8 U'mi goy gadol is there that has chukkim u'mishpatim tzaddikim k'khol ha-Torah hazot which I set lifneikhem ha-yom?

4:9 Only be careful, and keep your nefesh diligently, lest you forget the things which your eyes saw, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life; but make them known to your banim and the banim of your banim—   10 the day that you stood lif'nei YHWH Eloheikha b'Chorev, when YHWH said to me, "Assemble the people to me, and I will make them hear my d'varim, that they may learn to fear me kol ha-yamim asher hem chayyim `al-ha-adamah, and that they may teach their banim."  11 You came near and stood under ha-har, v'ha-har burned ba-esh `ad-lev ha-shamayim, with darkness, cloud, and thick darkness.  12 Vaidaber YHWH to you from within ha-esh: you heard qol d'varim, but you saw no form; you only heard a voice.  13 He declared to you his b'rit, which he commanded you to perform, ten d'varim.  He wrote them on two stone tablets.  14 YHWH commanded me at that time to teach you chukkim u'mishpatim, that you might do them ba-aretz where you go over to possess it.

4:15 Take great heed to your nafshot, for you saw no kind of form ba-yom diber YHWH aleikhem b'Chorev from within ha-esh,  16 lest you corrupt yourselves, and make yourself a carved image in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female,  17 the likeness of kol b'hemah asher ba-aretz, the likeness of any winged bird that flies ba-shamayim,  18 the likeness of anything that creeps ba-adamah, the likeness of kol dag asher ba-mayim under ha-aretz;  19 and lest you lift up your eyes to ha-shamayim, and when you see ha-shemesh and the moon and ha-kokhavim, even all the army of ha-shamayim, you are drawn away and worship them, and serve them, which YHWH Eloheikha has allotted l'khol ha-`amim under kol ha-shamayim.  20 But YHWH has taken you, and brought you out of the iron furnace, mi-Mitzrayim, to be to him a people of inheritance, as it is ha-yom hazeh.  21 Furthermore YHWH was angry with me for your sakes, and swore that I should not go over ha-Yarden, and that I should not go el-ha-aretz ha-tovah asher YHWH Eloheikha gives you for an inheritance;  22 but I must die ba-aretz hazot.  I must not go over ha-Yarden, but you shall go over and possess ha-aretz ha-tovah hazot.  23 Be careful, lest you forget b'rit YHWH Eloheikhem, which he made with you, and make yourselves a carved image in the form of anything which YHWH Eloheikha has forbidden you.  24 Ki YHWH Eloheikha is a devouring fire, El Qanna.

4:25 When you beget banim u'v'nei vanim, and you shall have been long ba-aretz, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a carved image in the form of anything, and shall do that which is evil in the sight of YHWH Eloheikha to provoke him to anger,  26 I call ha-shamayim v'et-ha-aretz to witness against you today, that you will soon utterly perish me-al ha-aretz which you go over ha-Yarden to possess it.  You will not prolong your days on it, but will utterly be destroyed.  27 YHWH will scatter you ba-`amim, and you will be left few in number ba-goyim where YHWH will lead you away.  28 There you shall serve elohim, the work of men's hands, `etz v`even, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.  29 But from there you shall seek YHWH Eloheikha, and you shall find him when you search after him with all your heart and with all your nefesh.  30 When you are in oppression, and kol ha-d'varim ha-eleh have come on you, b'acharit ha-yamim you shall return to YHWH Eloheikha and listen to his voice.  31 For YHWH Eloheikha is a merciful El.  He will not fail you nor destroy you, nor forget the b'rit avoteikha which he swore to them.

4:32 For ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since ha-yom asher bara Elohim adam `al-ha-aretz, and from the one end of ha-shamayim to the other end of ha-shamayim, whether there has been anything as great as this thing is, or has been heard like it?  33 Did a people ever hear qol Elohim speaking out of the middle of ha-esh, as you have heard, and live?  34 Or has Elohim tried to go and take a goy for himself from among another goy, by trials, by signs, by wonders, by war, by a mighty hand, by an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all that YHWH Eloheikhem did for you b'Mitzrayim before your eyes?  35 It was shown to you so that you might know that YHWH hu ha-Elohim.  There is no one else besides him.  36 Min-ha-shamayim he made you to hear his voice, that he might instruct you; v`al-ha-aretz he made you to see his esh ha-g'dolah; and you heard his words out of the middle of ha-esh.  37 Because he loved your avot, therefore he chose their z'ro'im after them, and brought you out with his presence, with his great power, mi-Mitzrayim;  38 to drive out goyim from before you greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their eretz for an inheritance, ka-yom hazeh.  39 Know therefore today, and take it to heart, ki YHWH hu ha-Elohim ba-shamayim above v`al-ha-aretz beneath.  Ein od.  40 You shall keep his chukkim and his mitzvot which I command you today, that it may go well with you and with your banim after you, and that you may prolong your days `al-ha-adamah which YHWH Eloheikha gives you for kol ha-yamim.

4:41 Then Mosheh set apart three cities beyond ha-Yarden toward the rise of shemesh,  42 that the man slayer might flee there, who kills his neighbor unintentionally and didn't hate him in time past, and that fleeing to one of these cities he might live:  43 Betzer ba-midbar, in the tableland, la-R'uveni; v'et-Ramot ba-Gil`ad la-Gadi; v'et-Golan ba-Bashan la-M'nasshi.

4:44 V'zot ha-Torah which Mosheh set lif'nei b'nei Yisra'el.  45 Eleh ha-edot v'ha-chukkim v'ha-mishpatim asher diber Mosheh el-b'nei Yisra'el when they came mi-Mitzrayim,  46 beyond ha-Yarden, in the valley opposite Beit P`or, b'eretz Sichon melekh ha-Emori, who lived b'Cheshbon, whom Mosheh u'v'nei Yisra'el struck when they came out mi-Mitzrayim.  47 They took possession of his eretz and eretz `Og melekh ha-Bashan, the two malkhei ha-Emori, who were beyond ha-Yarden toward the rising of shemesh;  48 me-`Aro`er, which is on the edge of the valley of Arnon v`ad-har Sion; hu-Chermon,  49 v'khol ha-`Aravah beyond ha-Yarden eastward, v'ad Yam ha-Aravah, under the slopes of ha-Pisgah.

CHAPTER 5

5:1 Vayikra Mosheh el-kol-Yisra'el vayomer to them, "Sh'ma, Yisra'el, et-ha-chukkim v'et-ha-mishpatim which I speak in your ears today, that you may learn them, and observe to do them."  2 YHWH Eloheinu made a b'rit with us b'Chorev.  3 Lo et-avoteinu karat YHWH et-ha-b'rit hazot, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive ha-yom.  4 YHWH spoke with you panim b'fanim ba-har from the midst of ha-esh,  5 (I stood between YHWH and you at that time, to show you d'var YHWH; for you were afraid because of ha-esh, and didn't go up ba-har) lemor,
5:6 "Anochi YHWH Eloheikha, who brought you out me-eretz Mitzrayim, mi-beit `avadim.

5:7 (6b in Heb.) "You shall have no other elohim before me.

5:8 (7 in Heb.) "You shall not make a carved image for yourself—any likeness of what is ba-shamayim above, or what is ba-aretz beneath, or that is ba-mayim under ha-aretz.  9 (8) You shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them; ki anochi, YHWH Eloheikha, El qanna, visiting the iniquity of avot `al-banim and on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me;  10 (9) and showing chesed to thousands of those who love me and keep my mitzvot.

5:11 (10) "You shall not take shem YHWH Eloheikha in vain[♦]; for YHWH will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

5:12 (11) "Observe yom ha-Shabbat to keep it holy, as YHWH Eloheikha commanded you.  13 (12) Sheshet yamim you shall labor, and do all your work;  14 (13) v'yom ha-sh'vi'i -- Shabbat la-YHWH Eloheikha, in which you shall not do any work— neither you, nor your ben nor your bat nor your `eved nor your female servant, nor your ox, nor your chamor nor any of your b'hemot, nor your stranger who is within your gates; that your `eved and your female servant may rest as well as you.  15 (14) You shall remember that you were an `eved b'eretz Mitzrayim, and YHWH Eloheikha brought you out of there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm.  Therefore YHWH Eloheikha commanded you to keep yom ha-Shabbat.

16 (15) "Honor your father and your mother, as YHWH Eloheikha commanded you; that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you `al ha-adamah which YHWH Eloheikha gives you.

5:17 (16) "You shall not murder.

5:18 "You shall not commit adultery.

5:19 "You shall not steal.

5:20 "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

5:21 (17) "You shall not covet your neighbor's wife.  Neither shall you desire your neighbor's bayit, his sadeh, or his `eved, or his female servant, his ox, or his chamor, or anything that is your neighbor's."

5:22 (18) Ha-d'varim ha-eleh diber YHWH to all your qahal ba-har out of the middle of ha-esh, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a qol gadol.  He added no more.  He wrote them on two stone tablets, and gave them to me.  23 (19) When you heard the voice out of the middle of the darkness, while the mountain was burning ba-esh, you came near to me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your z'qenim;  24 (20) and you said, "Behold, YHWH Eloheinu has shown us his kavod and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the middle of ha-esh.  V'ha-yom hazeh we have seen that Elohim does speak with ha-adam, and he lives.  25 (21) Now therefore, why should we die?  For ha-esh ha-g'dolah hazeh will consume us.  If we hear qol YHWH Eloheinu any more, then we shall die.  26 (22) Ki mi khol-basar that has heard qol Elohim chayyim speaking out of the middle of ha-esh, as we have, and lived?  27 (23) Go near, and hear all that YHWH Eloheinu shall say, and tell us all that YHWH Eloheinu tells you; and we will hear it, and do it."

5:28 (24) YHWH heard the voice of your d'varim when you spoke to me; vayomer YHWH to me, "I have heard qol divrei ha-am hazeh which they have spoken to you.  They have well said all that they have spoken.  29 (25) Oh that there were such a heart in them that they would fear me and keep all my mitzvot kol ha-yamim, that it might be well with them and with their banim l'olam!  30 (26) "Go tell them, ‘Return to your ohelim.'  31 (27) But as for you, stand here by me, and I will tell you kol ha-mitzvah, v'ha-chukkim v'ha-mishpatim which you shall teach them, that they may do them ba-aretz which I give them to possess."  32 (28) You shall observe to do therefore as YHWH Eloheikhem has commanded you.  You shall not turn away to the right hand or to the left.  33 (29) B'khol ha-derekh which YHWH Eloheikhem has commanded you, that you may live and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days ba-aretz which you shall possess.

CHAPTER 6

6:1 V'zot ha-mitzvah, ha-chukkim, v'ha-mishpatim which YHWH Eloheikhem commanded to teach you, that you might do them ba-aretz that you go over to possess;  2 that you might fear YHWH Eloheikha, to keep all his chukkim v'mishpatim which I command you - attah, your ben, and the ben of your ben, all the days of your life; and that your days may be prolonged.  3 Hear therefore, Yisra'el, and observe to do it, that it may be well with you, and that you may increase mightily, as YHWH, Elohei avoteikha, has promised to you, in an eretz flowing with milk and honey.

6:4 Sh'ma, Yisra'el: YHWH Eloheinu, YHWH Echad.  5 You shall love YHWH Eloheikha with all your heart, with all your nefesh, and with all your might.  6 Ha-d'varim ha-eleh, which I command you ha-yom, shall be on your heart;  7 and you shall teach them diligently to your banim, and shall talk of them when you sit in your bayit, and when you walk ba-derekh, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.  8 You shall bind them for a sign on your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes.  9 You shall write them al-m'zuzot of your bayit and on your gates.

6:10 It shall be, when YHWH Eloheikha brings you el-ha-aretz which he swore to your avot, l'Avraham, l'Yitz'chak, u'l-Ya'acov, to give you great and goodly cities which you didn't build,  11 and batim full of all good things which you didn't fill, and cisterns dug out which you didn't dig, vineyards and zetim which you didn't plant, and you shall eat and be full;  12 then beware lest you forget YHWH, who brought you me-eretz Mitzrayim, mi-beit `avadim.  13 You shall fear YHWH Eloheikha ; and you shall serve him, and shall swear by his name.  14 You shall not go after elohim acherim, me-elohei ha-`amim who are around you,  15 for El Qanna, YHWH Eloheikha is among you, lest the anger of YHWH Eloheikha be kindled against you, and he destroy you me-al pei ha-adamah.

6:16 You shall not tempt YHWH Eloheikhem, as you tempted him ba-Massah.  17 You shall diligently keep mitzvot YHWH Eloheikhem, and his edot, and his chukkim, which he has commanded you.  18 You shall do that which is right and good in the sight of YHWH, that it may be well with you and that you may go in and possess ha-aretz ha-tov which YHWH swore to avoteikha,  19 to thrust out all your enemies from before you, ka-asher diber YHWH.
6:20 When your son asks you in time to come, saying, "Ma ha-`edut v'ha-chukkim v'ha-mishpatim which YHWH Eloheinu has commanded you mean?"  21 then you shall tell your son, "We were `avadim l'Par`oh b'Mitzrayim.  YHWH brought us out of Mitzrayim with a mighty hand;  22 and YHWH showed great and awesome otot u'moftim g'dolim v'ra`im b'Mitzrayim, b'Paroh, and on all his bayit, before our eyes;  23 and he brought us out from there, that he might bring us in, to give us ha-aretz which he swore l'avoteinu.  24 YHWH commanded us to do kol ha-chukkim ha-eleh, to fear YHWH Eloheinu, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, k'ha-yom hazeh.  25 It shall be tz'dakah to us, if we observe to do kol ha-mitzvah hazot lif'nei YHWH Eloheinu, as he has commanded us."

CHAPTER 7

7:1 When YHWH Eloheikha brings you el-ha-aretz where you go to possess it, and casts out goyim rabbim before you -- ha-Chitti v'ha-Girgashi v'ha-Emori v'ha-Kna`ani v'ha-P'rizzi v'ha-Chivi v'ha-Y'vusi -- shiv`ah goyim greater and mightier than you;  2 and when YHWH Eloheikha delivers them up before you, and you strike them, then you shall utterly destroy them.  You shall make no b'rit with them, nor show mercy to them.  3 You shall not make marriages with them.  You shall not give your bat to his ben, nor shall you take his bat for your ben.  4 For he would turn away your banim from following me, that they may serve elohim acharim.  So the anger of YHWH would be kindled against you, and he would destroy you quickly.  5 But you shall deal with them like this: you shall break down their mizb'chot, dash their pillars in pieces, cut down their Asherim, and burn their engraved images ba-esh.
7:6 Ki `am kadosh attah l'YHWH Eloheikha.  YHWH Eloheikha has chosen you to be a people for his own possession, mi-kol ha-`amim asher `al-p'nei ha-adamah.  7 YHWH didn't set his love on you nor choose you mi-kol ha-`amim because you were more in number; for you were the fewest mi-kol ha-`amim;  8 but because YHWH loves you, and because he desires to keep the oath which he swore to your avot, YHWH has brought you out b'yad chazakah and redeemed you mi-beit `avadim, mi-yad Par`oh, melekh Mitzrayim.  9 Know therefore that YHWH Eloheikha, hu ha-Elohim, ha-El ha-ne-eman, who keeps ha-b'rit v'ha-chesed with them who love him and keep his mitzvot l'elef dor,[♦]10 and repays those who hate him to their face, to destroy them.  He will not be slack to him who hates him.  He will repay him to his face.  11 You shall therefore keep ha-mitzvah v'et-ha-chukkim v'et-ha-mishpatim which I command you ha-yom, to do them.

7:12 It shall happen, because you listen to ha-mishpatim ha-eleh and keep and do them, that YHWH Eloheikha will keep with you ha-b'rit v'et-ha-chesed which he swore to your avot.  13 He will love you, bless you, and multiply you.  He will also bless the fruit of your body and the fruit of your adamah, your grain and your tirosh and your oil, the increase of your livestock and the young of your flock, `al ha-adamah which he swore la-avoteikha to give you.  14 You will be blessed mi-kol-ha-`amim.  There won't be male or female barren among you, or among your b'hemot.  15 YHWH will take away from you all sickness; and he will put none of the evil diseases of Mitzrayim, which you know, on you, but will lay them on all those who hate you.  16 You shall consume kol ha-`amim whom YHWH Eloheikha shall deliver to you.  Your eye shall not pity them.  You shall not serve their elohim; for that would be a snare to you.

7:17 If you shall say in your heart, "Ha-goyim ha-eleh are more than I; how can I dispossess them?"  18 you shall not be afraid of them.  You shall remember well what YHWH Eloheikha did l'Par'oh u'l'khol Mitzrayim:  19 the great trials which your eyes saw, v'ha-otot v'ha-moftim v'ha-yad ha-chazaka, and the outstretched arm, by which YHWH Eloheikha brought you out.  So shall YHWH Eloheikha do to kol-ha-`amim of whom you are afraid.  20 V'gam, YHWH Eloheikha will send the hornet among them, until those who are left, and hide themselves, perish from before you.  21 You shall not be scared of them; for YHWH Eloheikha is among you, El gadol and awesome.  22 YHWH Eloheikha will cast out ha-goyim ha-eleh before you little by little.  You may not consume them at once, lest the animals of ha-sadeh increase on you.  23 But YHWH Eloheikha will deliver them up before you, and will confuse them with a great confusion, until they are destroyed.  24 He will deliver their m'lakhim into your hand, and you shall make their name perish from under ha-shamayim.  No one will be able to stand before you until you have destroyed them.  25 You shall burn the engraved images of their elohim ba-esh.  You shall not covet kesef v'zahav that is on them, nor take it for yourself, lest you be snared in it; for it is an abomination to YHWH Eloheikha.  26 You shall not bring an abomination into your bayit and become banned like it.  You shall utterly detest it.  You shall utterly abhor it; for it is a banned thing.

CHAPTER 8

8:1 You shall observe to do kol ha-mitzvah which I command you ha-yom, that you may live, and multiply, and go in and possess ha-aretz which YHWH swore to your avot.  2 You shall remember kol ha-derekh which YHWH Eloheikha has led you these forty years ba-midbar, that he might humble you, to test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his mitzvot or not.  3 He humbled you, allowed you to be hungry, and fed you with ha-man, which you didn't know, neither did your avot know, that he might teach you that ha-adam does not live by lechem only, but by every thing that proceeds out of the mouth of YHWH does ha-adam live.  4 Your clothing didn't grow old on you, neither did your foot swell, these forty years.  5 You shall consider in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so YHWH Eloheikha disciplines you.  6 You shall keep mitzvot YHWH Eloheikha, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.  7 For YHWH Eloheikha brings you el-eretz tovah, eretz nachalei mayim, of springs, and underground water flowing into valleys and hills;  8 eretz of wheat, barley, v'gefen, fig trees, and pomegranates; eretz zeit shemen and honey;  9 eretz in which you shall eat lechem without scarcity, you shall not lack anything in it; eretz whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you may dig n'choshet.  10 You shall eat and be full, and you shall bless YHWH Eloheikha `al-ha-aretz ha-tovah which he has given you.

8:11 Beware lest you forget YHWH Eloheikha, in not keeping his mitzvot and his mishpatim, and his chukkim which I command you today;  12 lest, when you have eaten and are full, and have built batim tovim and lived in them;  13 and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and kesef v'zahav are multiplied to you, and all that you have is multiplied;  14 then your heart might be lifted up, and you forget YHWH Eloheikha, who brought you me-eretz Mitzrayim, mi-beit `avadim;  15 who led you ba-midbar gadol and terrible, with venomous snakes and scorpions, and thirsty ground where there was ein mayim; who poured mayim for you out of the rock of flint;  16 who fed you man ba-midbar, which your avot didn't know, that he might humble you, and that he might prove you, to do you good at your latter end;  17 and lest you say in your heart, "My power and the might of my hand has gotten me this wealth."  18 But you shall remember YHWH Eloheikha , for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may establish his b'rit which he swore to your avot, ka-yom hazeh.  19 It shall be, if you shall forget YHWH Eloheikha , and walk after elohim acherim, and serve them and worship them, I testify against you today that you shall surely perish.  20 Ka-goyim YHWH makes to perish before you, so you shall perish, because you wouldn't listen to qol YHWH Eloheikha.

PEREQ ט
CHAPTER 9

9:1 Sh'ma, Yisra'el! You are to pass over ha-Yarden today, to go in to dispossess goyim g'dolim and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified ba-shamayim,  2 `am gadol and tall, b'nei `Anakim, whom you know, and of whom you have heard say, "Who can stand lif'nei b'nei `Anak?"  3 Know therefore today that YHWH Eloheikha is he who goes over before you as a devouring fire.  He will destroy them and he will bring them down before you.  So you shall drive them out and make them perish quickly, as YHWH has spoken to you.

9:4 Don't say in your heart, after YHWH Eloheikha has thrust them out from before you, "For my tzedek has YHWH brought me in to possess ha-aretz hazot;" because YHWH drives them out before you because of the wickedness of ha-goyim ha-eleh.  5 Not for your tzedek or for the uprightness of your heart do you go in to possess their eretz; but for the wickedness of ha-goyim ha-eleh YHWH Eloheikha drives them out from before you, and that he may establish ha-davar which YHWH swore to your avot, l'Avraham, l'Yitz'chak, u'l'Ya'akov.

9:6 Know therefore that it is not for your tzedek that YHWH Eloheikha gives you ha-aretz ha-tovah hazeh to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.  7 Remember, and don't forget, how you provoked YHWH Eloheikha to wrath ba-midbar.  From the day that you left me-eretz Mitzrayim until you came `ad-ha-maqom hazeh, you have been rebellious against YHWH.  8 U'v'Chorev you provoked YHWH to wrath, and YHWH was angry with you to destroy you.  9 When I had gone up onto ha-har to receive the stone tablets, even the tablets of ha-b'rit which YHWH cut with you, then I stayed ba-har forty days and forty nights.  Lechem I did not eat, u'mayim I did not drink.  10 YHWH delivered to me the two stone tablets written with the finger of Elohim.  On them were kol ha-d'varim which YHWH spoke with you ba-har out of the middle of ha-esh b'yom ha-qahal.  11 It came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights that YHWH gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of ha-b'rit.  12 Vayomer YHWH to me, "Arise, get down quickly from here; for your people whom you have brought out mi-Mitzrayim have corrupted themselves.  They have quickly turned away min-ha-derekh which I commanded them.  They have made a molten image for themselves!"

9:13 Vayomer YHWH to me, saying, "I have seen ha-`am hazeh, and behold, it is a stiff-necked people.  14 Leave me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under ha-shamayim; and I will make of you a goy mightier and greater than they."  15 So I turned and came down min-ha-har, v'ha-har was burning ba-esh.  The two tablets of ha-b'rit were in my two hands.  16 I looked, v'hinneh, you had sinned against YHWH Eloheikhem.  You had made yourselves a molded calf.  You had quickly turned away min-ha-derekh which YHWH had commanded you.  17 I took hold of the two tablets, and threw them out of my two hands, and broke them before your eyes.

9:18 I fell down lif'nei YHWH, as at the first, forty days and forty nights.  I neither ate lechem nor drank mayim, because of all your chet which you sinned, in doing that which was evil in the sight of YHWH, to provoke him to anger.  19 For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure with which YHWH was angry against you to destroy you.  But YHWH listened to me that time also.  20 YHWH was angry enough with Aharon to destroy him.  I prayed for Aharon also at the same time.  21 I took your chet, the calf which you had made, and burned it ba-esh, and crushed it, grinding it very small, until it was as fine as dust.  I threw its dust into the brook that descended min-ha-har.

9:22 U'v'Tav`erah u'v'Massah u'v'Kivrot Ha-ta'avah you provoked YHWH to wrath.  23 When YHWH sent you from Kadesh Barnea, lemor, "Go up and possess ha-aretz which I have given you," you rebelled against pi YHWH Eloheikhem, and you didn't believe him or listen to his voice.  24 You have been rebellious against YHWH from the day that I knew you.

9;25 So I fell down before YHWH the forty days and forty nights that I fell down, because YHWH had said he would destroy you.  26 I prayed to YHWH, and said, "Adonai YHWH, don't destroy your people and your inheritance that you have redeemed through your greatness, that you have brought out mi-Mitzrayim b'yad chazakah.  27 Remember your `avadim, l'Avraham, l'Yitz'chak u'l'Ya'akov.  Don't look at the stubbornness of ha-`am hazeh, nor at their wickedness, nor at their chet,  28 lest ha-aretz you brought us out from say, ‘Because YHWH was not able to bring them el-ha-aretz which he promised to them, and because he hated them, he has brought them out to kill them ba-midbar.'  29 Yet they are your people and your inheritance, which you brought out by your great power and by your outstretched arm."

PEREQ ‏י‎
CHAPTER 10

10:1 At that time YHWH said to me, "Cut two stone tablets like the first, and come up to me onto ha-har, and make an aron `etz.  2 I will write on the tablets ha-d'varim that were on the first tablets which you broke, and you shall put them ba-aron."  3 So I made an aron of acacia wood, and cut two stone tablets like the first, and went up onto ha-har, having the two tablets in my hand.  4 He wrote on the tablets, according to the first writing, the ten d'varim, which YHWH spoke to you ba-har out of the middle of ha-esh b'yom ha-qahal; and YHWH gave them to me.  5 I turned and came down min-ha-har, and put the tablets ba-aron which I had made; and there they are as YHWH commanded me.

10:6 (U'v'nei Yisra'el traveled mi-B'erot B'nei Ya`akan to Moserah.  Sham met Aharon, and there he was buried; and El`azar b'no ministered in the priest's office in his place.  7 From there they traveled to Gudgod; and from Gudgod to Yotvah, eretz nachalei mayim.  8 At that time YHWH set apart the tribe of Levi to bear aron b'rit YHWH, to stand before YHWH to minister to him, and to bless in his name, ad ha-yom hazeh.  9 Therefore Levi has no portion nor inheritance with his brothers; YHWH is his inheritance, according ka-asher diber YHWH Eloheikha to him.)

10:10 I stayed ba-har, as at the first time, forty days and forty nights; and YHWH listened to me that time also.  YHWH would not destroy you.  11 Vayomer YHWH to me, "Arise, take your journey lif'nei ha-`am; and they shall go in and possess ha-aretz which I swore to their avot to give to them."

10:12 Now, Israel, what does YHWH Eloheikha require of you, but to fear YHWH Eloheikha, to walk in all his ways, to love him, and to serve YHWH Eloheikha with all your heart and with all your nefesh,  13 to keep mitzvot YHWH and his chukkim, which I command you today for your good?  14 Behold, to YHWH Eloheikha belongs ha-shamayim u'sh'mei ha-shamayim, ha-aretz, and all that is therein.  15 Only YHWH had a delight in your avot to love them, and he chose their z'ro'im after them, you mi-kol-ha-`amim, ka-yom hazeh.  16 Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiff-necked.  17 Ki YHWH Eloheikhem, hu Elohei ha-elohim v'Adonei ha-adonim; ha-El ha-gadol, ha-gibbor v'ha-nora, who doesn't respect persons or take bribes.  18 He executes mishpat for the fatherless v'almanah and loves the foreigner in giving him lechem and clothing.  19 Therefore love the foreigner, for you were foreigners b'eretz Mitzrayim.  20 You shall fear YHWH Eloheikha.  You shall serve him.  You shall cling to him, and you shall swear by his name.  21 He is your praise, v'hu Eloheikha, who has done for you these great and awesome things which your eyes have seen. 22 Your avot went down into Mitzrayim with seventy nefesh; and now YHWH Eloheikha has made you as kokhvei ha-shamayim for multitude.

CHAPTER 11

11:1 Therefore you shall love YHWH Eloheikha and keep his instructions, his chukkim, his mishpatim, and his mitzvot kol ha-yamim.  2 Know ha-yom—for I don't speak with your banim who have not known, and who have not seen the chastisement of YHWH Eloheikhem, his greatness, his mighty hand, his outstretched arm,  3 his otot, and his ma'asim, which he did in the middle of Mitzrayim l'Phar'oh melekh Mitzrayim, and to all his eretz;  4 and what he did to the army of Mitzrayim, to their horses, and to their chariots; how he made the water of Yam Suf to overflow them as they pursued you, and how YHWH has destroyed them ad ha-yom hazeh;  5 and what he did to you ba-midbar until you came ad ha-maqom hazeh;  6 and what he did l'Datan v'la-Aviram, b'nei Eli'av ben-R'uven—how ha-aretz opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households, their ohalim, and every living thing that followed them, in the middle of kol Yisra'el;  7 but your eyes have seen kol ma'aseh YHWH ha-gadol which he did.

11:8 Therefore you shall keep kol ha-mitzvah which I command you today, that you may be strong, and go in and possess ha-aretz that you go over to possess;  9 and that you may prolong your yamim `al-ha-adamah which YHWH swore to your avot to give to them and to their zera, eretz flowing with milk and honey.  10 Ki ha-aretz, where you go in to possess lo k'eretz Mitzrayim that you came out of, where you sowed your zera and watered it with your foot, as a garden of herbs;  11 v'ha-aretz that you go over to possess (is an) eretz (of) harim and valleys which drinks water as the rain of ha-shamayim comes down,  12 eretz asher YHWH Eloheikha cares for; the eyes of YHWH Eloheikha are always on it, me-reshit ha-shanah v'ad acharit shanah.

11:13 It shall happen, if you shall listen diligently to my mitzvot which I command you ha-yom, to love YHWH Eloheikhem, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your nefesh,  14 that I will give the rain for your eretz in its season, the early rain and the latter rain, that you may gather in your grain, your tirosh, and your oil.  15 I will give grass in your sadeh for your b'hemot, and you shall eat and be full.  16 Be careful, lest your heart be deceived, and you turn away to serve elohim acherim and worship them;  17 and YHWH's anger be kindled against you, and he shut up ha-shamayim so that there is no rain, and ha-adamah doesn't yield its fruit; and you perish quickly me-`al ha-aretz ha-tovah which YHWH gives you.

11:18 Therefore you shall lay up my d'varim in your heart and in your nefesh.  You shall bind them for an ot on your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes.  19 You shall teach them to your banim, talking of them when you sit in your bayit, when you walk ba-derekh, when you lie down, and when you rise up.  20 You shall write them on the m'zuzot of your bayit and on your gates;  21 that your days and your children's days may be multiplied `al ha-adamah which YHWH swore to your avot to give them, as the days of ha-shamayim `al-ha-aretz.  22 For if you shall diligently keep kol ha-mitzvah hazot which I command you—to do them, to love YHWH Eloheikhem, to walk in all his d'rakhim, and to cling to him—  23 then YHWH will drive out kol-ha-goyim ha-eleh from before you, and you shall dispossess goyim g'dolim mightier than yourselves.  24 Kol ha-maqom on which the sole of your foot treads shall be yours: min-ha-midbar v'ha-L'vanon, min-ha-nahar n'har P'rat v'ad ha-yam ha-acharon [i.e., the Mediterranean] shall be your border.  25 No man will be able to stand before you.  YHWH Eloheikhem will lay the fear of you and the dread of you `al-p'nei kol ha-aretz that you tread on, as he has spoken to you.

12:1 Eleh ha-chukkim v'ha-mishpatim which you shall observe to do ba-aretz which YHWH, Elohei avoteikha, has given you to possess kol ha-yamim that you live `al-ha-adamah.  2 You shall surely destroy kol ha-m'qomot in which ha-goyim that you shall dispossess served eloheihem: on the high mountains, and on the hills, and under every green tree.  3 You shall break down their altars, dash their pillars in pieces, and burn their Asherim ba-esh.  You shall cut down the engraved images of their elohim.  You shall destroy their name min ha-maqom ha-hu.  4 You shall not do so la-YHWH Eloheikhem.  5 Ki el-ha-maqom which YHWH Eloheikhem shall choose out of all your tribes, to put his name there, you shall seek his habitation, and you shall come there.  6 You shall bring your `olot, your sacrifices, your ma`aserot, the t'rumah of your hand, your n'darim, your nidvot, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock there.  7 There you shall eat lif'nei YHWH Eloheikhem, and you shall rejoice in all that you put your hand to, you and your households, in which YHWH Eloheikha has blessed you.  8 You shall not do all the things that we do here today, every man whatever is right in his own eyes;  9 for you haven't yet come to the rest and to the inheritance which YHWH Eloheikha gives you.  10 But when you go over ha-Yarden and dwell ba-aretz asher YHWH Eloheikhem causes you to inherit, and he gives you rest from all your enemies around you, so that you dwell in safety,  11 then it shall happen that to ha-maqom which YHWH Eloheikhem shall choose, to cause his name to dwell there, there you shall bring all that I command you: your `olot, your sacrifices, your ma`aserot, the t'rumah of your hand, and all your nidvot which you vow to YHWH.  12 You shall rejoice before YHWH Eloheikhem—you, and your banim, your banot, your `avadim, your female servants, v'ha-Levi who is within your gates, because he has no portion nor inheritance with you.  13 Be careful that you don't offer your `olot b'khol-maqom that you see;  14 im-ba-maqom which YHWH chooses in one of your tribes, there you shall offer your `olot, and there you shall do all that I command you.

12:15 Yet you may kill and eat basar within all your gates, after all the desire of your nefesh, according to the blessing of YHWH Eloheikha which he has given you.  Ha-tameh v'ha-tahor may eat of it, as of the gazelle and the deer.  16 Only you shall not eat the blood.  You shall pour it out `al-ha-aretz like mayim.  17 You may not eat within your gates the ma`aser of your grain, or of your tirosh, or of your oil, or the firstborn of your herd or of your flock, nor any of your vows which you vow, nor your free will offerings, nor the t'rumah of your hand;  18 but you shall eat them lif'nei YHWH Eloheikha ba-maqom which YHWH Eloheikha shall choose: you, your ben, your bat, your `eved, your female servant, v'ha-Levi who is within your gates.  You shall rejoice lif'nei YHWH Eloheikha in all that you put your hand to.  19 Be careful that you don't forsake ha-Levi as long as you live in your adamah.

12:20 When YHWH Eloheikha enlarges your border, as he has promised you, and you say, "I want to eat basar," because your nefesh desires to eat basar, you may eat basar, after all the desire of your nefesh.  21 If ha-maqom which YHWH Eloheikha shall choose to put his name is too far from you, then you shall kill of your herd and of your flock, which YHWH has given you, as I have commanded you; and you may eat within your gates, after all the desire of your nefesh.  22 Even as the gazelle and as the deer is eaten, so you shall eat of it.  Ha-tameh v'ha-tahor may eat of it alike.  23 Only be sure that you don't eat ha-dam; ki ha-dam hu ha-nafesh.  You shall not eat ha-nefesh im-ha-basar.  24 You shall not eat it.  `Al-ha-aretz you shall pour it out ka-mayim.  25 You shall not eat it, that it may go well with you and with your banim after you, when you do that which is right in the eyes of YHWH.  26 Only your kadashim which you have, and your vows, you shall take and go el-ha-maqom which YHWH shall choose.  27 You shall offer your `olot, ha-basar v'ha-dam, on the mizbeach of YHWH Eloheikha.  The blood of your sacrifices shall be poured out on the altar of YHWH Eloheikha, and you shall eat ha-basar.  28 Observe and hear kol-ha-d'varim which I command you, that it may go well with you and with your banim after you `ad-`olam, when you do that which is good and right in the eyes of YHWH Eloheikha.

12:29 When YHWH Eloheikha cuts off ha-goyim from before you where you go in to dispossess them, and you dispossess them and dwell in their eretz,  30 be careful that you are not ensnared to follow them after they are destroyed from before you, and that you not inquire after their elohim, saying, "How do ha-goyim ha-eleh serve their elohim?  I will do likewise."  31 You shall not do so la-YHWH Eloheikha; for every abomination to YHWH, which he hates, they have done to their elohim; for they even burn their banim and their banot ba-esh to eloheikhem.
12:32 (13:1 in Heb.) Kol ha-davar which I command you, that you shall observe to do.  You shall not add to it, nor take away from it.

CHAPTER 13

13:1 (2) If a navi or a dreamer of dreams arises among you, and he gives you ot o mofet,  2 (3) v'ha-ot v'ha-mofet comes to pass, of which he spoke to you, saying, "Let's go acharei elohim acherim" (which you have not known) "and let's serve them,"  3 (4) you shall not listen el-divrei ha-navi ha-hu, or to that dreamer of dreams; for YHWH Eloheikhem is testing you, to know whether you love YHWH Eloheikhem with all your heart and with all your nafshot.  4 (5) You shall walk after YHWH Eloheikhem, fear him, keep his mitzvot, and obey his voice.  You shall serve him, and cling to him.  5 (6) V'ha-navi ha-hu, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death, because he has spoken rebellion against YHWH Eloheikhem, who brought you me-eretz Mitzrayim and redeemed you mi-beit `avadim, to draw you aside min-ha-derekh which YHWH Eloheikha commanded you to walk in.  So you shall remove ha-ra from among you.

13:6 (7) If your ach, the ben of your em, or your ben, or your bat, or the ishshah of your bosom, or your friend who is as your own nefesh, entices you secretly, saying, "Let's go and serve elohim acherim"—which you have not known, you, nor your avot;  7 (8) me-elohei ha-`amim who are around you, near to you, or far off from you, from the one end of ha-aretz even to the other end of ha-aretz—  8 (9) you shall not consent to him nor listen to him; neither shall your eye pity him, neither shall you spare, neither shall you conceal him;  9 (10) but you shall surely kill him.  Your hand shall be first on him to put him to death, and afterwards the hands of kol-ha-`am.  10 (11) You shall stone him to death with stones, because he has sought to draw you away from YHWH Eloheikha, who brought you me-eretz Mitzrayim mi-beit `avadim.  11 (12) Kol Yisra'el shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more ka-davar ha-ra hazeh among you.

13:12 (13) If you hear about one of your cities, which YHWH Eloheikha gives you to dwell there, that  13 (14) certain anashim b'nei b'liya`al[belial] have gone out from among you and have drawn away the inhabitants of their city, saying, "Let's go and serve elohim acherim," which you have not known,  14 (15) then you shall inquire, investigate, and ask diligently.  V'hinneh, if it is emet, and the thing certain, that such abomination was done among you,  15 (16) you shall surely strike the inhabitants of ha-ir ha-hi with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, with all that is therein and its livestock, with the edge of the sword.  16 (17) You shall gather all its plunder into the middle of its street, and shall burn ba-esh et-ha-`ir, with all of its plunder, to YHWH Eloheikha.  It shall be a heap forever.  It shall not be built again.  17 (18) Nothing of the devoted thing shall cling to your hand, that YHWH may turn from the fierceness of his anger and show you mercy, and have compassion on you and multiply you, as he has sworn to your avot,  18 (19) when you listen b'qol YHWH Eloheikha, to keep all his mitzvot which I command you today, to do that which is right in the eyes of YHWH Eloheikha.

CHAPTER 14

14:1 Banim attem la-YHWH Eloheikhem.  You shall not cut yourselves, nor make any baldness between your eyes la-met.  2 Ki `am kadosh attah la-YHWH Eloheikha, and YHWH has chosen you to be a people for his own possession mi-kol ha-`amim asher `al-p'nei ha-adamah.

14:3 You shall not eat any abominable thing.  4 Zeh ha-b'hemah which you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat,  5 ayil, the gazelle, the roebuck, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope, and the chamois.  6 v'khol b'hemah that parts the hoof, and has the hoof split in two and chews the cud, ba-b'hemah, you may eat.  7 Nevertheless these you shall not eat of them that chew the cud, or of those who have the hoof split: ha-gamal, the hare, and the rabbit.  Because they chew the cud but don't part the hoof, they are tameh to you.  8 Ha-chazir, because it has a split hoof but doesn't chew the cud, is tameh to you.  You shall not eat their basar.  You shall not touch their carcasses.

14:9 These you may eat mi-kol asher ba-mayim: you may eat whatever has fins and scales.  10 You shall not eat whatever doesn't have fins and scales.  Tameh hu to you.

14:11 Of all tahor birds you may eat.  12 But these are they of which you shall not eat: the eagle, the vulture, the osprey,  13 the red kite, the falcon, the kite after its kind,  14 every raven after its kind,  15 the ostrich, the owl, the seagull, the hawk after its kind,  16 the little owl, the great owl, the horned owl,  17 the pelican, the vulture, the cormorant,  18 the stork, the heron after its kind, the hoopoe, and the bat.  19 All winged creeping things are tameh to you.  They shall not be eaten.  20 Of all tahor birds you may eat.

14:21 You shall not eat of anything that dies of itself.  You may give it to the foreigner living among you who is within your gates, that he may eat it; or you may sell it to a foreigner; ki `am kadosh attah la-YHWH Eloheikha.
You shall not boil a young goat in its mother's milk.

14:22 You shall surely tithe all the increase of your zera, that which comes out of ha-sadeh, shanah shanah.  23 You shall eat lif'nei YHWH Eloheikha ba-maqom which he chooses to cause his name to dwell, the tithe of your grain, of your tirosh, and of your oil, and the firstborn of your herd and of your flock; that you may learn to fear YHWH Eloheikha kol ha-yamim.  24 If ha-derekh is too long for you, so that you are not able to carry it because ha-maqom which YHWH Eloheikha shall choose to set his name there is too far from you, when YHWH Eloheikha blesses you,  25 then you shall turn it into kesef, bind up ha-kesef in your hand, and shall go to ha-maqom which YHWH Eloheikha shall choose.  26 You shall trade ha-kesef for whatever your nefesh desires: for cattle, or for sheep, or for yayin, or for strong drink, or for whatever your nefesh asks of you.  You shall eat there lif'nei YHWH Eloheikha, and you shall rejoice, you and your bayit.  27 You shall not forsake ha-Levi who is within your gates, for he has no portion nor inheritance with you.

14:28 At the end of every shalosh shanim you shall bring all the ma`aser of your increase ba-shanah ha-hu, and shall store it within your gates.  29 Ha-Levi, because he has no portion nor inheritance with you, as well as the foreigner living among you, the fatherless, and the widow who are within your gates shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that YHWH Eloheikha may bless you b'khol ma`aseh of your hand which you do.

CHAPTER 15

15:1 At the end of (every) sheva shanim, you shall make a sh'mittah.  2 Zeh d'var ha-sh'mittah: every creditor shall release that which he has lent to his neighbor.  He shall not require payment from his neighbor and his brother, because sh'mittah l'YHWH has been proclaimed.  3 Of a foreigner you may require it; but whatever of yours is with your brother, your hand shall release.  4 However there will be no poor with you (for YHWH will surely bless you ba-aretz asher YHWH Eloheikha gives you for an inheritance to possess)  5 if only you diligently listen b'qol YHWH Eloheikha, to observe to do kol ha-mitzvah hazot which I command you today.  6 For YHWH Eloheikha will bless you, as he promised you.  You will lend to goyim rabbim, but you will not borrow.  You will rule over goyim rabbim, but they will not rule over you.

15:7 If a poor man, one of your brothers, is with you within any of your gates in your eretz which YHWH Eloheikha gives you, you shall not harden your heart, nor shut your hand from your poor brother;  8 but you shall surely open your hand to him, and shall surely lend him sufficient for his need, which he lacks.  9 Beware that there not be a wicked [b'liya`al] thought in your heart, saying, "Sh'nat ha-sheva, sh'nat ha-sh'mittah, is at hand," and your eye be evil against your poor brother and you give him nothing; and he cry to YHWH against you, and it be chet to you.  10 You shall surely give, and your heart shall not be grieved when you give to him, because it is for this thing YHWH Eloheikha will bless you in all your work and in all that you put your hand to.  11 For the poor will never cease out of ha-aretz.  Therefore I command you to surely open your hand to your brother, to your needy, and to your poor, in your eretz.

15:12 If your brother, ha-Ivri o ha-Ivriah, is sold to you and serves you shesh shanim, then in the seventh year you shall let him go free from you.  13 When you let him go free from you, you shall not let him go empty.  14 You shall furnish him liberally out of your flock, out of your threshing floor, and out of your wine press.  As YHWH Eloheikha has blessed you, you shall give to him.  15 You shall remember that you were an `eved b'eretz Mitzrayim, and YHWH Eloheikha redeemed you.  Therefore I command you ha-davar hazeh, ha-yom.  16 It shall be, if he tells you, "I will not go out from you," because he loves you and your bayit, because he is well with you,  17 then you shall take an awl, and thrust it through his ear to the door, and he shall be to you `eved olam.  Also to your female servant you shall do likewise.  18 It shall not seem hard to you when you let him go free from you; for he has been double the value of a hired hand as he served you shesh shanim, and YHWH Eloheikha will bless you in all that you do.

15:19 You shall dedicate all the firstborn males that are born of your herd and of your flock to YHWH Eloheikha.  You shall do no work with the firstborn of your herd, nor shear the firstborn of your flock.  20 You shall eat it lif'nei YHWH Eloheikha shanah b'shanah ba-maqom asher YHWH shall choose, you and your bayit.  21 If it has any defect—is lame or blind, or has any defect whatever, you shall not sacrifice it to YHWH Eloheikha.  22 You shall eat it within your gates.  Ha-tahor v'ha-tameh shall eat it alike, as the gazelle and as the deer.  23 Only you shall not eat its blood.  You shall pour it out al-ha-aretz ka-mayim.

CHAPTER 16

16:1 Observe chodesh ha-aviv, and keep Pesach la-YHWH Eloheikha; ki b'chodesh ha-aviv YHWH Eloheikha brought you out of Mitzrayim (by) lailah.  2 You shall sacrifice Pesach la-YHWH Eloheikha, of the flock and the herd, ba-maqom which YHWH shall choose to cause his name to dwell there.  3 You shall eat no chametz with it.  Shiv`at yamim you shall eat matzot lechem, the bread of affliction (for you came out me-eretz Mitzrayim in haste), that you may remember the day when you came out me-eretz Mitzrayim all the days of your life.  4 No s'or shall be seen with you in all your borders shiv`at yamim; neither shall any of ha-basar, which you sacrifice remain ba-`erev ba-yom ha-rishon la-boqer.  5 You may not sacrifice ha-Pesach within any of your gates which YHWH Eloheikha gives you;  6 but im el-ha-maqom which YHWH Eloheikha shall choose to cause his name to dwell in, there you shall sacrifice ha-Pesach ba`arev, at the going down of ha-shemesh (at the) mo`ed when you came out mi-Mitzrayim.  7 You shall roast and eat it ba-maqom which YHWH Eloheikha chooses.  You shall return ba-boqer to your ohalim.  8 Sheshet yamim you shall eat matzot, u'va-yom ha-sh'vi`i (shall be) a solemn assembly la-YHWH Eloheikha.  You shall do no work.

16:9 You shall count for yourselves shiv`a shavu`ot.  From the time you begin to put the sickle to the standing grain you shall begin to count shiv`a shavu`ot.  10 You shall keep chag shavu`ot la-YHWH Eloheikha with a tribute of a n'davah of your hand, which you shall give according to how YHWH Eloheikha blesses you.  11 You shall rejoice lef'nei YHWH Eloheikha: attah, your ben, your bat, your `eved, your female servant, ha-L'vi who is within your gates, the foreigner, the fatherless, v'ha-almanah who are among you, ba-maqom which YHWH Eloheikha shall choose to cause his name to dwell there.  12 You shall remember that you were an `eved b'Mitzrayim.  You shall observe and do ha-chukkim ha-eleh.

16:13 Chag ha-Sukkot you shall keep shiv`at yamim, after you have gathered in from your threshing floor and from your wine press.  14 You shall rejoice in your feast, attah, your ben, your bat, your `eved, your female servant, ha-L'viyyi, the foreigner, the fatherless, and ha-almanah who are within your gates.  15 Shiv`at yamim you shall keep a chag la-YHWH Eloheikha ba-maqom which YHWH chooses, because YHWH Eloheikha will bless you in all your increase and in all the work of your hands, and you shall be altogether joyful.

16:16 Shalosh times ba-shanah all of your males shall appear p'nei YHWH Eloheikha ba-maqom which he chooses: b'chag ha-matzot u'v'chag ha-shavu`ot u'v'chag ha-sukkot.  They shall not appear p'nei YHWH empty.  17 Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of YHWH Eloheikha which he has given you.

16:18 - 21:9

16:18 Shoftim and officers in all your gates, which YHWH Eloheikha gives you, according to your tribes; and they shall judge ha-`am (with) mishpat tzedek.  19 You shall not pervert mishpat.  You shall not show partiality.  You shall not take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of chakhamim and perverts divrei tzaddikim.  20 Tzedek tzedek you shall follow, that you may live and inherit ha-aretz asher YHWH Eloheikha gives you.

16:21 You shall not plant for yourselves an Asherah kol-`etz beside mizbeach YHWH Eloheikha, which you shall make for yourselves.  22 Neither shall you set yourself up a sacred stone which YHWH Eloheikha hates.

PEREQ ‏יז‎
CHAPTER 17

17:1 You shall not sacrifice to YHWH Eloheikha an ox or a sheep in which is a defect or anything evil; for that is an abomination to YHWH Eloheikha.

17:2 If there is found among you, within any of your gates which YHWH Eloheikha gives you, ish o ishshah who does that which is evil in the sight of YHWH Eloheikha in transgressing his b'rit,  3 and has gone and served elohim acherim and worshiped them, v'la-shemesh, or the moon, or any of the host of ha-shamayim, which I have not commanded,  4 and you are told, and you have heard of it, then you shall inquire diligently.  V'hinneh, if it is true, and the thing certain, that such abomination is done b'Yisra'el,  5 then you shall bring out ha-ish ha-hu o et-ha-ishshah ha-hi who has done ha-davar ha-ra hazeh to your gates, ha-ish o et-ha-ishshah; and you shall stone them to death with stones.  6 Al-pi sh'nayim edim o sh'loshah edim, he who is to die shall be put to death.  He shall not be put to death al-pi ed echad.  7 The hands of ha-edim shall be first on him to put him to death, and afterward the hands of kol ha`am.  So you shall remove the evil from among you.

17:8 If there arises a matter too hard for you la-mishpat, bein-dam l'dam, between plea and plea, and between stroke and stroke, being matters of controversy within your gates, then you shall arise, and go el-ha-maqom which YHWH Eloheikha chooses.  9 You shall come el-ha-kohenim ha-L'viyyim v'al-ha-shofet who shall be ba-yamim ha-hem.  You shall inquire, and they shall give you d'var ha-mishpat.  10 You shall do al-pi ha-davar which they shall give you min-ha-maqom ha-hu which YHWH chooses.  You shall observe to do according to all that they shall teach you.  11 Al-pi ha-torah which they shall teach you, v'al-ha-mishpat which they shall tell you, you shall do.  You shall not turn away from the sentence which they announce to you, to the right hand, nor to the left.  12 Ha-ish who does presumptuously in not listening to ha-kohen who stands to minister there before YHWH Eloheikha o el-ha-shofet, ha-ish ha-hu shall die.  You shall put away ha-ra min-Yisra'el.  13 V'kol ha-am shall hear and fear, and do no more presumptuously.

17:14 When you have come el-ha-aretz asher YHWH Eloheikha gives you, and possess it and dwell in it, and say, "I will set over me a melekh k'khol ha-goyim that are around me,"  15 you shall surely set him whom YHWH Eloheikha chooses as melekh over you.  You shall set as melekh over you one from among your brothers.  You may not put a foreigner over you, who is not your brother.  16 Only he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause ha-am to return to Mitzrayim, to the end that he may multiply horses; because YHWH has said to you, "You shall not go back ba-derekh hazeh `od."  17 He shall not multiply nashim to himself, that his heart not turn away.  He shall not greatly multiply to himself kesef v'zahav.

17:18 V'hayah, when he sits al-kiseh of his kingdom, that he shall write himself a copy of ha-Torah hazot al-sefer mi-lif'nei ha-kohanim ha-L'viyyim.  19 It shall be with him, and he shall read from it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear YHWH his Elohim, to keep kol ha-divrei ha-Torah hazot v'ha-chukkim ha-eleh, to do them;  20 that his heart not be lifted up above his brothers, and that he not turn away min-ha-mitzvah to the right hand, or to the left, to the end that he may prolong his days in his mamlakha, he and his banim, in the middle of Yisra'el.

[♦]
5:11:  "in vain" (‏שָׁוְא‎ -shav) - Strong's H7723: emptiness, vanity; deceit, false, lies, worthless."  How much more empty or worthless can it be than to not use His name or to replace it with counterfeits, such as "the LORD," "Hashem," "God," "G-d," "L-rd," "Elokim," etc.?  "This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations." (Ex. 3:15 RSV) How is it a MEMorial if we don't reMEMber to use it?  "My people shall know my name." (Is. 52:6)
7:9:  Editor's personal note: “a thousand generations” is several times longer than the history of mankind to date.  In my genealogical studies, I've found approximately 165 generations from Adam to today.
