CHAPTER 1

1:1 Divrei Yir'm'yahu [Yah loosens] ben Chilkiyahu [my portion is Yah], min ha-kohanim who were in `Anatot [affliction] b-eretz Binyamin [son of my right hand]:   2 to whom d'var YHWH came bimei Yoshiyahu [Yah supports] ben Amon [master workman], Melekh Y'hudah [praise], in the thirteenth year of his reign.   3 It came also bimei Yehoyakim [Yah raises up] ben Yoshiyahu, Melekh Y'hudah, to the end of the eleventh year of Tzidkiyahu [Yah is righteousness], ben Yoshiayahu, Melekh Y'hudah to the carrying away of Yerushalaim1 [prob. foundation of peace] captive in the fifth month.

1:4 Now d'var YHWH came to me, saying,
1:5 "Before I formed you in the belly I knew you,
and before you came forth out of the womb I sanctified you;
I have appointed you a navi la-goyim."
6 Then I said, "Ah, Adonai YHWH! hinneh, I don't know how to speak; for I am a child."
7 Vayomer YHWH to me,
"Don't say, 'I am a child;'
for to whomever I shall send you, you shall go,
and whatever I shall command you, you shall speak."
8 "Don't be afraid because of them;
for I am with you to deliver you," says YHWH.
1:9 Then YHWH put forth his hand, and touched my mouth; vayomer YHWH to me,
"Hinneh, I have put my d'varim in your mouth:
10 "hinneh, I have set you ha-yom hazeh al-ha-goyim v'al-ha-mamlakhot,
to pluck up and to break down
and to destroy and to overthrow,
to build and to plant."
1:11 Moreover d'var YHWH came to me, saying, "Yir'm'yahu, what do you see?" I said, "I see a rod of an almond tree." [shaked]   12 Vayomer YHWH to me, "You have well seen: for I watch over [shoked] my davar to perform it."

1:13 And it was that d'var YHWH came to me the second time, saying, "What do you see?" I said, "I see a boiling caldron; and the face of it is from the north."   14 Vayomer YHWH to me, "Out of the north evil shall break forth on all the inhabitants of ha-aretz.   15 For hinneh, I will call kol mishp'chot mamlachot of the north," says YHWH; and they shall come, and everyone shall set his kiseh at the entrance of the gates of Yerushalaim, and against all the walls of it round about, and against kol arei Y'hudah.   16 I will utter my mishpatim against them touching all their wickedness, in that they have forsaken me, and have burned incense to elohim acherim , and bowed down to the ma'asim of their own hands.   17 Therefore, gird up your loins, and arise, and speak to them all that I command you: don't be dismayed at them, lest I dismay you before them.   18 For hinneh, I have made you ha-yom a fortified city, and an iron pillar, and walls of n'choshet, al-kol ha-aretz, against malkhei Y'hudah, against the sarim of it, against the kohanim of it, and against am-ha-aretz.   19 They shall fight against you; but they shall not prevail against you: for I am with you," says YHWH, "to deliver you."

PEREQ ‏ב‎
CHAPTER 2

2:1 D'var YHWH came to me, saying,   2 "Go, and cry in the ears of Yerushalaim, saying, 'Thus says YHWH,
"I remember for you the kindness of your youth, the love of your weddings;
how you went after me ba-midbar, b'eretz that was not sown.
3 "Yisra'el [God strives] is holiness to YHWH, first of his increase:
all who devour him shall be held guilty; evil shall come on them,"
says YHWH.'"

2:4 Hear d'var YHWH, beit Ya'akov [heel grabber], and kol mishp'chot beit Yisra'el:   5 thus says YHWH,
"What unrighteousness have your avot found in me, that they have gone far from me,
and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?
6 "Nor did they say, 'Where is YHWH
who brought us up me-eretz Mitzrayim,
who led us ba-midbar, b'eretz aravah and of pits,
through a land of drought and of the shadow of death,
through eretz that no ish passed through, and where no adam lived?'
7 "I brought you el-eretz ha-karmel [fruitful land],
to eat the fruit of it and the goodness of it;
but when you entered, you defiled my eretz,
and made my heritage an abomination.
8 "Ha-kohanim didn't say, 'Where is YHWH?'
and those who handle ha-Torah didn't know me:
the rulers also transgressed against me,
and ha-nevi'im prophesied by Ba'al,
and walked after things that do not profit.

2:9 "Therefore I will yet plead with you,"
says YHWH,
"and with b'nei b'neikhem will I plead.
10 "For pass over to the isles of Kittiyim [Cyprus], and see;
and send to Kedar [Arabia], and consider diligently;
and see if there has been such a thing.
11 "Has a goy changed elohim, which yet are no elohim?
but my people has changed its kavod
for that which does not profit.
12 "Be astonished, shamayim, at this,
and be horribly afraid, be very desolate,"
says YHWH.
13 "For my people have committed two evils:
they have forsaken me,
the spring of mayim chayyim,
and hewed them out cisterns,
broken cisterns,
that can hold no mayim.
2:14 "Is Yisra'el an eved if born in the house?
Why has he become a prey?
15 "The young lions have roared on him, and yelled;
and they have made his land waste:
his cities are burned up, without inhabitant.
16 "Also b'nei Nof [Memphis] and Tachpanches
have broken the crown of your head.
17 "Haven't you procured this to yourself,
in that you have forsaken YHWH your Eloah,
when he led you ba-derekh?
18 "Now what have you to do l'derekh Mitzrayim,
to drink the waters of the Shichor [a branch of the Nile]?
or what have you to do in the way to Ashshur,
to drink the waters of the River?
19 "Your own wickedness shall correct you,
and your backsliding shall reprove you:
know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and a bitter,
that you have forsaken YHWH your Eloah,
and that my fear is not in you," says Adonai YHWH Tsva'ot.
2:20 "For of old time I have broken your yoke,
and burst your bonds;
and you said, 'I will not serve;'
for on every high hill
and under every green tree
you bowed yourself, playing the prostitute.
21 "Yet I had planted you a noble vine, wholly a zera emet:
how then are you turned into the degenerate branches of a foreign vine to me?
22 "For though you wash yourself with lye,
and use much soap,
yet your iniquity is marked before me,"
says Adonai YHWH.
23 "How can you say, 'I am not defiled,
I have not gone after ha-B'alim'?
See your way in the valley,
know what you have done:
you are a swift dromedary traversing her ways;
24 a wild donkey used to midbar,
that snuffs up the ruach in her desire; in her heat, who can turn her away?
All those who seek her will not weary themselves;
in her month they shall find her.
25 "Withhold your foot from being unshod,
and your throat from thirst:
but you said, 'It is in vain;
no, for I have loved strangers,
and after them I will go.'
26 "As the thief is ashamed when he is found,
so is beit Yisra'el ashamed;
they, their m'lakhim, their sarim, and their kohanim, and their nevi'im;
27 who say to a tree, 'You are avi;'
and to an even, 'You have brought me forth:'
for they have turned their back to me,
and not their face.
But in the time of their trouble they will say,
'Arise, and save us.'
28 "But where are your elohim that you have made for yourself?
Let them arise, if they can save you in the time of your trouble:
for according to the number of your cities are your elohim, Y'hudah.
2:29 "Why will you plead with me?
You all have transgressed against me,"
says YHWH.
30 "In vain have I struck your banim;
they received no correction:
your own sword has devoured your nevi'im,
like a destroying lion.
31 "Ha-dor, see d'var YHWH.
Have I been a wilderness to Yisra'el, or a land of thick darkness?
Why do my people say, 'We are broken loose;
we will come to you no more'?
32 "Can a virgin forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire?
Yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

2:33 "How do you trim your way to seek ahavah!
Therefore even the wicked women you have taught your ways.
34 "Also in your k'nafot is found the dam nafshot of the innocent poor:
you did not find them breaking in;
but it is because of all these things.
35 "Yet you said, 'I am innocent; surely his anger is turned away from me.'
Hinneh, I will enter into mishpat with you, because you say, 'I have not sinned.'
36 Why do you go about so much to change your way?
You shall be shamed by Mitzrayim also, as you were shamed by Ashshur.
37 "From there also shall you go forth, with your hands on your head:
for YHWH has rejected those in whom you trust,
and you shall not prosper with them."

CHAPTER 3

3:1 "If an ish puts away his ishah, and she goes from him, and is to ish acher,
will he return to her again?
Won't ha-eretz ha-hi be greatly polluted?
But you have played the prostitute with many lovers;
yet return again to me," says YHWH.
2 "Lift up your eyes to the bare heights, and see;
where have you not been lain with?
By the waysides have you awaited (your lovers),
as an `Aravi ba-midbar;
and you have polluted eretz with your prostitution and with your wickedness.
3 "Therefore the showers have been withheld,
and there has been no latter rain;
yet you have a prostitute's forehead,
you refused to be ashamed.
4 "Won't you from this time cry to me2,
'Avi, you are the guide of my youth?
5 'Will he retain his anger forever?
Will he keep it to the end?'
Behold, you have spoken and have done evil things, and have had your way."
3:6 Vayomer YHWH to me also bimei Yoshiyahu ha-melekh, "Have you seen that which backsliding Yisra'el has done? She is gone up on every high mountain and under every green tree, and there has played the prostitute.   7 I said, 'After she had done all these things, She will return to me'; but she didn't return: and her treacherous achot Y'hudah saw it.   8   I saw, when, for this very cause that backsliding Yisra'el had committed adultery, I had put her away and given her a bill of divorce, yet treacherous Y'hudah, her sister, didn't fear; but she also went and played the prostitute.   9 It happened through the lightness of her prostitution, that ha-aretz was polluted, and she committed adultery with ha-even and with ha-etz.   10 Yet for all this her treacherous achot Y'hudah has not returned to me with her whole heart, but only in pretense," says YHWH.

3:11 Vayomer YHWH to me, "Backsliding Yisra'el has shown herself more righteous than treacherous Y'hudah.  12 Go, and proclaim these words toward the north, and say,
'Return, backsliding Yisra'el,'
says YHWH;
'I will not look in anger on you; for I am merciful,'
says YHWH.
'I will not keep anger forever.
13 'Only acknowledge your iniquity,
that you have transgressed against YHWH your Eloah,
and have scattered your ways to the strangers under every green tree,
and you have not obeyed my voice,'
says YHWH.
14 'Return, backsliding children,'
says YHWH;
'for I am your ba'al:
and I will take you echad me'ir ush'nayim mi-mishpacha,
and I will bring you to Tziyon':
3:15 "and I will give you ro'im according to my heart, who shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.   16 It shall be, when you are multiplied and increased ba-aretz ba-yamim ha-hemah," says YHWH, "they shall say no more, Aron b'rit YHWH; neither shall it come to mind; neither shall they remember it; neither shall they miss it; neither shall it be made any more.   17 At that time they shall call Yerushalaim 'kiseh YHWH;' and gathered to it shall be kol ha-goyim l'shem YHWH, lirushalam: neither shall they walk any more after the stubbornness of their lev ra'ah.   18 Ba-yamim ha-hemah, beit Y'hudah shall walk with beit Yisra'el, and they shall come together me-eretz of the north al-ha-aretz that I gave for an inheritance to avotekhem.
3:19 "But I said, 'How I will put you ba-banim,
and give you a pleasant land,
a goodly heritage of the hosts of goyim!'
And I said, 'You shall call me Avi,
and shall not turn away from following me.'
20 "Surely as an ishah treacherously departs from her companion,
so have you dealt treacherously with me, beit Yisra'el,"
says YHWH.
21 A voice is heard on the bare heights,
the weeping and the petitions of beit Yisra'el;
because they have perverted their way,
they have forgotten YHWH their Eloah.
22 "Return, backsliding banim,
I will heal your backsliding."
"Hinneh, we are come to you;
for you are YHWH our Eloah.
23 "Truly in vain is (help looked for) from the hills, the tumult on the mountains:
truly in YHWH Eloheinu t'shuat Yisra'el.
3:24 "But the shameful thing has devoured the labor of our fathers from our youth, their flocks and their herds, b'neihem and b'noteihem.  25   Let us lie down in our shame, and let our confusion cover us; for we have sinned against YHWH Eloheinu, we and avoteinu, from our youth even ad ha-yom hazeh; and we have not obeyed b'kol YHWH Eloheinu."

CHAPTER 4

4:1 "If you will return, Yisra'el," says YHWH,
"to me you will return,
and if you will put away your abominations out of my sight,
then you shall not wander,
2 and you shall swear, 'As YHWH lives,'
be'emet, b'mishpat, u'vitzdakah;
and ha goyim shall bless themselves in him,
and in him shall they glory."
4:3 For thus says YHWH l'ish Yehudah v'lirushalam,
"Break up your fallow ground,
and don't sow el kotzim.
4 "Circumcise yourselves la'YHWH,
and take away the foreskins of your heartA,
ish Y'hudah and inhabitants of Yerushalaim,
lest my wrath go forth like fire,
and burn so that none can quench it,
because of the evil of your doings."
4:5 Declare bi'hudah, u'virushalam, and say,
"Blow shofar ba-aretz.
Cry aloud and say,
'Assemble yourselves, and let us go
into the fortified cities.'
6 "Set up a standard toward Tziyon.
Flee for safety, don't stay,
for I will bring evil from the north,
and a great destruction.
7 "A lion is gone up from his thicket,
and a destroyer of goyim;
he is on his way, he has gone forth from his place
to make your a-retz desolate,
that your cities be laid waste
without inhabitant.
8 "For this, gird yourself with sackcloth,
lament and wail,
for the fierce anger of YHWH
hasn't turned back from us."
9 "It shall happen ba-yom ha-hu," says YHWH, "that lev ha-melekh v'lev ha-sarim shall fall; and ha-kohanim shall be astonished, and ha-nevi'im shall wonder."  10 Then I said, "Ah, Adonai YHWH! Surely you have greatly deceived this people and Yerushalaim, saying, You shall have shalom*, whereas the sword reaches to ha-nefesh."

4:11 At that time it shall be said el-ha`am hazeh and to Yerushalaim, "A hot ruach from the bare heights ba-midbar derekh bat ami, not to winnow, nor to cleanse;  12 a full ruach from these shall come for me.  Now I will also utter mishpatim against them.
4:13 "Hinneh, he shall come up as clouds,
and his chariots as the whirlwind.
His horses are swifter than eagles.
Woe to us, for we are ruined!"
14 Yerushalaim, wash your heart from wickedness,
that you may be saved.
How long shall your evil thoughts
lodge within you?
15 For a voice declares from Dan,
and publishes evil mi-har Efrayim:
16 "Make mention la-goyim; hinneh,
publish against Yerushalaim,
'Watchers come from a far country,
and give out their voice against the cities of Y'hudah.
17 'They are as keepers of a field against her round about,
because she has been rebellious against me,' says YHWH.
18 "Your way and your doings
have procured these things to you.
This is your wickedness, for it is bitter,
for it reaches to your heart."

19 My anguish, my anguish! I am pained at my very heart.
My heart is disquieted in me.
I cannot be silent, because you have heard qol shofar, my nefesh,
the alarm of war.
20 Destruction upon destruction has been called,
for kol ha-aretz is laid waste.
Suddenly my ohalim are destroyed,
my curtains in a moment.
21 How long shall I see the banner
and hear qol shofar?
22 "For my people are foolish,
they don't know me.
They are foolish children,
and they have no understanding.
They are chakhamim l'ha-ra,
but to do good they have no knowledge."
23 I saw ha-aretz, v'hinneh, tohu va'vohuB;
v'el-ha-shamayim, and they had no light.
24 and I looked on ha-harim, v'hinneh, they trembled,
and all the hills moved back and forth.
25 and I looked, v'hinneh, there was no man,
and all the birds of ha-shamayim were fled.
26 I saw, v'hinneh, ha-karmel [the fruitful field] ha-midbar,
and all the cities of it were broken down
at the presence of YHWH, before his fierce anger.
4:27 For thus says YHWH, "Kol ha-aretz shall be a desolation; yet I will not make a full end.
4:28 "For this shall ha-aretz mourn,
and ha-shamayim above be black,
because I have spoken it, I have purposed it,
and I have not repented, neither will I turn back from it."

29 Kol ir shall flee for the noise of the horsemen and archers.
They go into the thickets, and climb up on the rocks.
Kol ha`ir is forsaken,
and not a man dwells therein.
30 You, when you are made desolate, what will you do?
Though you clothe yourself with scarlet,
though you deck yourself with ornaments of zahav,
though you enlarge your eyes with paint,
in vain you make yourself beautiful;
your lovers despise you,
they seek your nefesh.
31 For I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail,
the anguish as of her who brings forth her first child,
qol bat Tziyon, gasping
and spreading her hands, saying,
"Woe is me now, for my nefesh faints before the murderers!"

CHAPTER 5

5:1 "Run back and forth through the streets of Yerushalaim,
and see now, and know,
and seek in the broad places of it,
if you can find a man,
if there is one who does mishpat, who seeks emunah,
and I will pardon her.
2 "Though they say, 'As YHWH lives;'
surely they swear falsely."
3 YHWH, don't your eyes look on emunah?
You have stricken them,
but they were not grieved.
You have consumed them,
but they have refused to receive correction.
They have made their faces harder than a rock,
they have refused to return.
4 Then I said, "Surely these are poor;
they are foolish,
for they don't know derekh YHWH,
or mishpat of their Eloah:
5 "I will get me to ha-g'dolim,
and will speak to them,
for they know derekh YHWH,
mishpat
of their Eloah."
But these with one accord have broken the yoke
and burst the bonds.

6 Therefore a lion out of the forest shall kill them,
a wolf of the aravot shall destroy them,
a leopard shall watch against their cities.
Everyone who goes out there shall be torn in pieces,
because their transgressions are many,
their backsliding is increased.
7 "How can I pardon you?
Your banim have forsaken me,
and sworn by them that are no elohim.
When I had fed them to the full,
they committed adultery
and assembled themselves in troops at the prostitutes' houses.
8 "They were as fed horses roaming at large.
Everyone neighed after his neighbor's wife.
9 "Shall I not punish for these things?" says YHWH;
"and on such a goy that is like this
shall not my nefesh be avenged?
10 "Go up against her vine-rows and destroy;
but full destruction do not make.
Take away her branches, for they are not of YHWH.
11 "for beit Yisra'el u'veit Y'hudah
have dealt very treacherously against me,"
says YHWH.
12 They have denied YHWH,
and said, "It is not he;
neither shall evil come on us;
neither shall we see sword nor famine:
13 "v'ha-nevi'im shall become ruach,
and the word is not in them.
Thus shall it be done to them."

14 Therefore thus says YHWH, Elohei Tsva'ot,
"Because you speak ha-davar hazeh,
hinneh
, I will make my words in your mouth fire,
and this people wood, and it shall devour them.
15 "Hinneh, I will bring a goy on you from afar, beit Yisra'el,"
says YHWH.
"It is a mighty goy,
goy me-olam hu
,
a goy whose language you don't know
nor understand what they say.
16 "Their quiver is an open grave,
they are all mighty men.
17
"They will devour your harvest and your lechem;
they will devour your banim and your banot;
they will devour your flocks and your herds;
they will devour your vines and your fig trees.
They will beat down your fortified cities, in which you trust, with the sword.
5:18 "But even ba-yamim ha-hemah," says YHWH, "I will not make a full end with you.   19 It shall happen, when you shall say, 'Why has YHWH Eloheinu done kol eleh to us?' then you shall say to them, 'As you have forsaken me, and served foreign elohim in your eretz, so shall you serve strangers b'eretz that is not yours.'
5:20 "Declare this b'veit Ya'akov, and publish it in Y'hudah, saying,
21 'Hear this now, foolish people, and without understanding;
who have eyes, and don't see;
who have ears, and don't hear:
22 'Don't you fear me?' says YHWH:
'Won't you tremble at my presence,
who have placed the sand for the bound of ha-yam,
by a perpetual decree, that it can't pass it?
Though the waves of it toss themselves, yet they can't prevail;
though they roar, yet they can't pass over it.
23 'But ha`am hazeh has a revolting and a rebellious heart;
they are revolted and gone.
24 'Neither do they say in their heart,
"Let us now fear YHWH Eloheinu,
who gives rain, both the former and the latter, in its season;
who preserves to us the sh'vuot chukkot of the harvest."
25 'Your iniquities have turned away these things,
and your chattot have withheld ha-tov from you.
26 'For among ami are found wicked men:
they watch, as fowlers lie in wait;
they set a trap, they catch men.
27 'As a cage is full of birds,
so are their houses full of deceit:
therefore they are become great and grow rich.
28 'They have grown fat, they shine.
Yes, they pass over in deeds of wickedness.
They don't plead the cause,
the cause of the fatherless, that they may prosper;
and mispat of the needy they don't judge [lo shafatu].
29 'Shall I not punish for these things?' says YHWH.
'On such a goy as this,
shall not my nefesh be avenged?'

30 "An appalling and horrible thing
has happened ba-aretz.
31 Ha-nevi'im prophesy falsely,
and ha-kohanim bear rule by their means,
and ami love to have it so;
and what will you do in the end of it?

PEREQ ‏ו‎
CHAPTER 6

6:1 "Flee for safety, b'nei Binyamin,
out of the midst of Yerushalaim,
and blow the shofar in Tekoa,
and raise up a signal on Beit-Ha-Kerem;
for evil looks forth from the north,
and a great destruction.
2 "The comely and delicate one, bat Tziyon, will I cut off.
3 "Ro'im with their flocks shall come to her;
they shall pitch their tents against her round about;
every one shall feed in his place.
4 "Prepare war against her;
arise, and let us go up at noon.
Woe to us, for the day declines,
for the shadows of the evening are stretched out.
5 "Arise, and let us go up by night,
and let us destroy her palaces."

6 For thus has YHWH Tsva'ot said,
"Hew down trees,
and cast up a mound against Yerushalaim:
hi ha`ir
to be punished.
There is only oppression in the midst of her.
7 "As a well casts forth its waters,
so she casts forth her wickedness.
Violence and destruction is heard in her;
before me continually is sickness and wounds.
8 "Be instructed, Yerushalaim,
lest my nefesh be alienated from you,
lest I make you a desolation,
a land not inhabited."
9 Thus says YHWH Tsva'ot,
"They shall thoroughly glean the remnant of Yisra'el as a vine.
Turn again your hand as a grape-gatherer
over the branches."
10 To whom shall I speak and testify,
that they may hear?
Behold, their ear is uncircumcised,
and they can't listen.
Behold, the word of YHWH has become a reproach to them;
they have no delight in it.
11 Therefore I am full of the wrath of YHWH.
I am weary with holding in.
"Pour it out on the children in the street
and on the assembly of young men together,
for even the ish with the ishah shall be taken,
the aged with him who is full of days.
12 "Bateihem shall be turned to others,
their sadot and nashim together;
for I will stretch out my hand
on the inhabitants of ha-aretz,"
says YHWH.
13 "For from the least of them even to the greatest of them
everyone is given to covetousness,
and from the navi even to the kohen
every one deals falsely.
14 "They have healed also the hurt of my people slightly,
saying, 'Shalom, shalom;' when there is no shalom.
15 "Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination?
No, they were not at all ashamed,
neither could they blush:
therefore they shall fall among those who fall;
at the time that I punish them
they shall be cast down,"
says YHWH.
16 Thus says YHWH,
"Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths,
where derekh ha-tov is; and walk therein,
and you shall find rest for your nafshot.
But they said, 'We will not walk therein.'
17 "I set watchmen over you, saying,
'Listen to the sound of the shofar;'
but they said, 'We will not listen.'
18 "Therefore hear, goyim,
and know, edah, what is among them.
19 "Hear, ha-aretz.  Hinneh, I will bring evil el-ha`am hazeh,
even the fruit of their thoughts,
because they have not listened to my d'varim,
and as for my Torah, they have rejected it.
20 "To what purpose does frankincense come to me from Sheva,
and the sweet cane from a far eretz?
Your olot are not acceptable,
nor your sacrifices pleasing to me."
21 Therefore thus says YHWH,
"Hinneh, I will lay stumbling-blocks before ha`am hazeh,
and they shall stumble against them,
avot and banim together;
the neighbor and his friend shall perish."
22 Thus says YHWH,
"Hinneh, a people comes me-eretez of the north,
and a goy gadol shall be stirred up from the uttermost parts of the aretz.
23 "They lay hold on bow and spear.
They are cruel and have no mercy.
Their voice roars like ha-yam,
and they ride on horses,
everyone set in array as a man to the battle
against you, bat Tziyon."
24 We have heard the report of it.
Our hands wax feeble.
Anguish has taken hold of us,
pangs as of a woman in travail.
25 Don't go forth into the field,
nor walk ba-derekh,
for the sword of the enemy
and terror are on every side.
26 Bat ami, gird yourself with sackcloth,
and wallow yourself in ashes.
Make mourning as for an only son,
most bitter lamentation,
for suddenly the destroyer
shall come on us.
27 "I have made you a tester of metals, a fortress among ami;
that you may know and try their way."
28 They are all grievous rebels,
going about with slanders;
they are brass and iron.
All of them deal corruptly.
29 The bellows blow fiercely,
the lead is consumed by the fire.
In vain they go on refining,
for the wicked are not plucked away.
30 Refuse silver shall men call them,
because YHWH has rejected them.

CHAPTER 7

7:1 Ha-davar that came to Yir'm'yahu from YHWH, saying,   2 "Stand in the gate of beit YHWH, and proclaim there ha-davar hazeh, and say, 'Hear d'var YHWH kol Y'hudah, who enter in at these gates to bow down to YHWH.'"   3 Thus says YHWH Tsva'ot, Elohei Yisra'el, "Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell ba-maqom hazeh.   4 Don't trust in lying words, saying, 'Heikhal YHWH, heikhal YHWH, heikhal YHWH, are these.'

7:5 For if you truly amend your ways and your doings, if you truly execute mishpat ben ish and his neighbor,   6 if you don't oppress ha-ger, the fatherless, and the widow, and don't shed innocent blood ba-maqom hazeh, neither walk after elohim acherim to your own hurt,   7 then will I cause you to dwell ba-maqom hazeh, ba-aretz that I gave la-avoteikhem, l'min-olam v'ad-olam.

7:8 "Hinneh, you trust in lying words that can't profit.   9 Will you steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense la-Ba'al, and walk after elohim acherim that you have not known,   10 and come and stand l'fanai ba-bayit hazeh, which is called by my name, and say, 'We are delivered,' that you may do all these abominations?   11 Has this house, which is called by my name, become a den of violent ones in your eyes? Hinneh, I, even I, have seen it," says YHWH.

12 "But go now to my place which was in Shiloh ["that which is his"], where I caused my name to dwell at the first, and see what I did to it for the wickedness of ami Yisra'el.   13 Now, because you have done kol ma'asim ha-eleh," says YHWH, "and I spoke to you, rising up early and speaking, but you didn't hear; and I called you, but you didn't answer,   14 therefore I will do la-bayit which is called by my name, in which you trust, and la-maqom which I gave to you and la-avoteikhem, as I did to Shiloh.   15 I will cast you out of my sight, as I have cast out all your brothers, kol zera Efrayim.

7:16 "Therefore don't pray for this people, neither lift up a cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to me, for I will not hear you. 17   Don't you see what they do b'arei Y'hudah and in the streets of Yerushalaim?  18 Ha-banim gather wood, v'ha-avot kindle ha-esh v'ha-nashim knead the dough to make cakes to m'lekhet ha-shamayim, and to pour out drink offerings to elohim acherim, that they may provoke me to anger.  19 Do they provoke me to anger?" says YHWH.  "Do they not provoke themselves, to the shame of their own faces?"  20 Therefore thus says Adonai YHWH: "Hinneh, my anger and my wrath shall be poured out el-ha-maqom hazeh, al-ha-adam v'al-ha-b'hemah v'al-etz ha-sadeh v'al-p'ri ha-adamah, and it shall burn, and shall not be quenched."

7:21 Thus says YHWH Tsva'ot, Elohei Yisra'el: "Add your olot to your sacrifices, and eat basar.  22 For I didn't speak with avoteikhem, nor command them in the day that I brought them me-eretz Mitzrayim, concerning olot or sacrifices,   23 but this thing I commanded them, saying, 'Listen to my voice, and I will be your Elohim, and you shall be ami; and walk b'khol ha-derekh that I command you, that it may be well with you.'  24 But they didn't listen nor turn their ear, but walked in their own counsels and in the stubbornness of their lev ra'ah, and went backward, and not forward.   25 Since the day that your fathers came forth me-eretz Mitzrayim ad ha-yom hazeh, I have sent to you kol avadai ha-nevi'im, daily rising up early and sending them:   26 yet they didn't listen to me, nor incline their ear, but made their neck stiff: they did worse than their avot.

7:27 "You shall speak kol ha-d'varim ha-eleh to them; but they will not listen to you: you shall also call to them; but they will not answer you.   28 You shall tell them, 'Zeh ha-goy that has not listened b'qol YHWH their Eloah, nor received instruction: ha-emunah has perished, and is cut off from their mouth.
29 'Cut off your hair and cast it away,
and take up a lamentation on the bare heights;
for YHWH has rejected and forsaken
the generation of his wrath.'
7:30 For b'nei Y'hudah have done that which is evil in my sight," says YHWH: "they have set their abominations ba-bayit which is called by my name, to defile it.   31 They have built the high places of ha-Tofet, which is b'Geh ben Hinnom, to burn b'neihem and b'noteihem ba-esh; which I didn't command, nor did it come into my mind.   32 Therefore hinneh, the days come," says YHWH, "that it shall no more be called ha-Tofet, nor Geh ben Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter: for they shall bury b'Tofet, for lack of (another) space.   33 The dead bodies of ha`am hazeh shall be food for the birds of ha-shamayim, and for b'hemot ha-aretz; and none shall frighten them away.   34 Then I will cause to cease ma-arei Y'hudah, and from the streets of Yerushalaim, qol sason v'qol simcha, qol chatan v'qol kalah; for ha-aretz shall become a waste.

CHAPTER 8

8:1 "At that time," says YHWH, "they shall bring the bones of malkhei Y'hudah, and the bones of his sarim, and the bones of ha-kohanim, and the bones of ha-nevi'im, and the bones of the inhabitants of Yerushalaim out of their graves;  8:2 and they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of ha-shamayim, which they have loved, and which they have served, and after which they have walked, and which they have sought, and to which they have bowed down.  They shall not be gathered, nor be buried.  They shall be for dung al-p'nei ha-aretz.  8:3 Mavet shall be chosen rather than chayyim by all the residue that remain of ha-mishpachah ha-ra hazeh, that remain in all the places where I have driven them," says YHWH Tsva'ot.
8:4 "And you shall tell them, 'Thus says YHWH:'
"Do they fall and not arise?
Shall one turn away, and not return?
8:5 "Why then is ha`am hazeh Yerushalaim
slidden back by a perpetual apostasy?
They hold fast to deceit,
they refuse to return.
8:6 "I listened and heard,
but they didn't speak aright.
No man repents of his wickedness,
saying, 'What have I done?'
Every one turns to his course,
as a horse that rushes headlong into the battle.
8:7  "Yes, the chasidah3 bashamayim
knows her moadim;
and the turtle-dove and the swallow and the thrush
observe the time of their coming,
but ami do not know mishpat YHWH.
8:8 "How do you say, 'Chakhamim anachnu,
v'Torat YHWH
is with us'?
Hinneh, the false pen of the sofrim
has worked falsely.
8:9 "Chakhamim are dried up [ashamed],
they are dismayed and taken.
Hinneh, they have rejected d'var YHWH,
and what manner of chakham is in them?
8:10 "Therefore will I give their nashim to others
and their sodot to those who shall possess them,
for everyone from the least even to the greatest
is given to covetousness;
m'navi v'ad kohen
every one deals falsely.
8:11 "They have healed the hurt of bat ami slightly,
saying, 'Shalom, shalom;'
when there is no shalom*.
8:12 "Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination?
No, they were not at all ashamed,
neither could they blush.
Therefore shall they fall among those who fall.
In the time of their punishment they shall be cast down,"
says YHWH.
8:13 "I will utterly consume them," says YHWH.
"There shall be no grapes on the vine,
nor figs on the fig tree,
and the leaf shall fade,
and what I have given them shall pass over them."'"
8:14 Why do we sit still?
Assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the fortified cities,
and let us be silent there,
for YHWH Eloheinu has put us to silence,
and given us water of gall to drink,
because we have sinned against YHWH.
8:15 We looked for shalom, but there was no good;
for a time of healing, and hinneh, dismay!
8:16 The snorting of his horses is heard from Dan:
at the sound of the neighing of his strong ones
kol ha-aretz trembles;
for they are come, and have devoured ha-aretz and all that is in it;
the city and those who dwell therein.
8:17 "For hinneh, I will send nachshim,
adders, among you, which will not be charmed,
and they shall bite you," says YHWH.
8:18 Oh that I could comfort myself against sorrow!
My heart is faint within me.
8:19 Hinneh, the voice of the cry of bat ami from a land that is very far off.
"Isn't YHWH b'Tziyon? Isn't her Melech in her?"
"Why have they provoked me to anger with their engraved images and with foreign vanities?
8:20 "The harvest is past, the summer is ended,
and we are not saved."
8:21 For the hurt of bat ami I am hurt.
I mourn; dismay has taken hold on me.
8:22 Is there no balm b'Gil`ad?
Is there no physician there?
Why then isn't the health of bat ami recovered?

CHAPTER 9

9:1 Oh that my head were mayim,
and my eyes a spring of tears,
that I might weep yomam valailah
for the slain of bat ami!
9:2 Oh that I had ba-midbar
a lodging-place of wayfaring men,
that I might leave my people,
and go from them,
for they are all adulterers,
an assembly of treacherous men.
9:3 "They bend their tongues; their bow is a lie,
and they are not mighty for the truth on ha-aretz,
for they proceed from evil to evil,
and they don't know me," says YHWH.
9:4 "Let every man be guarded against his neighbor,
and don't trust in any brother;
for every brother will utterly supplant,
and every neighbor will go about with slanders.
9:5 "Everyone will deceive his neighbor
and will not speak the truth.
They have taught their tongue to speak lies.
They weary themselves to commit iniquity.
9:6 "Your habitation is in the midst of deceit.
Through deceit they refuse to know me," says YHWH.
9:7 Therefore thus says YHWH Tsva'ot,
"Hinneh, I will melt them and try them,
for what (else) should I do, because of bat ami?
9:8 "Their tongue is a deadly arrow.
It speaks deceit.
One speaks shalom to his neighbor with his mouth,
but in his heart he lays wait for him.
9:9 "Shall I not visit them for these things?" says YHWH.
"Shall not my nefesh be avenged
on such a goy as this?
9:10 "For the mountains I will take up a weeping and wailing,
and for the pastures of the wilderness a lamentation,
because they are burned up, so that none passes through;
neither can men hear the voice of the cattle.
Both the birds of ha-shamayim v`ad b'hemah are fled, they are gone.
9:11 "I will make Yerushalaim heaps,
a dwelling-place of jackals,
and I will make arim Y'hudah a desolation without inhabitant."
9:12 Mi ha-ish ha-chakham that may understand this, and he to whom diber pi YHWH, that he may declare it? Why is ha-aretz perished and burned up like midbar, so that none passes through?  9:13 Vayomer YHWH, "Because they have forsaken my Torah which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein,   9:14 but have walked after the stubbornness of their own heart, and after ha-ba'alim, which their fathers taught them,"  9:15 therefore thus says YHWH Tsva'ot, Elohei Yisra'el, "Hinneh, I will feed them, ha`am hazeh, with wormwood, and make them drink mayim of poison.   9:16 I will scatter them also among ha-goyim, whom neither they nor their avot have known, and I will send the sword after them until I have consumed them."

9:17 Thus says YHWH Tsva'ot,
"Consider, and call for the mourners, that they may come;
and send for ha-chakhamot, that they may come,
9:18   "and let them make haste and take up a wailing for us,
that our eyes may run down with tears
and our eyelids gush out with waters.
9:19 "For a voice of wailing is heard mi-Tziyon,
'How are we ruined!
We are greatly confounded,
because we have forsaken ha-aretz,
because they have cast down our dwellings.'"
9:20 Yet hear d'var YHWH, you women,
and let your ear receive davar of his mouth,
and teach your banot wailing,
and ishah her neighbor lamentation.
9:21 For death is come up into our windows,
it is entered into our palaces,
to cut off the children from outside,
the young men from the streets.
9:22 Speak, "Thus says YHWH,
'The dead bodies of ha-adam shall fall as dung on the open field,
and as the sheaf after the reaper; and none shall gather (them).'"
9:23 Thus says YHWH, "Don't let chakham glory in his chokhmah, neither let ha-gibor glory in his might.  Don't let the rich man glory in his riches,   9:24 but let him who glories glory in this, that he has understanding, and knows me, that I am YHWH who exercises chesed, mishpat, utzdakah ba-aretz, for in these things I delight," says YHWH.

9:25 "Hinneh, the days come," says YHWH, "that I will punish all those who are circumcised with foreskin:   9:26 Mitzrayim v'al-Y'hudah v'al-Edom v'al-b'nei `Ammon v'al-Mo'av, and all those (whose hair is) trimmed on the edges, who dwell ba-midbar; for kol ha-goyim are uncircumcised, and kol beit Yisra'el are uncircumcised in heart."

PEREQ ‏י‎
CHAPTER 10

10:1 Hear ha-davar asher YHWH diber to you, beit Yisra'el!   10:2 Thus says YHWH,
"El-derekh ha-goyim you shall not be goaded,
and don't be dismayed at otot ha-shamayim;
for ha-goyim are dismayed at them.
10:3 For chukkot ha`amim are vanity;
for one cuts a tree out of the forest,
ma'aseh of the hands of the workman with the axe.
10:4 "They deck it with kesef and with zahav;
they fasten it with nails and with hammers,
that it not move.
10:5 "They are like a palm tree of hammered work,
and don't speak.
They must be carried,
because they can't go.
Don't be afraid of them,
for they can't do evil,
neither is it in them to do good."
10:6 Me-ein kamokha, YHWH.
Gadol attah, v'gadol shimkha
in might.
10:7 Who should not fear you, Melekh ha-goyim?
for it appertains to you,
because among kol chakhmei ha-goyim,
and in all their malkhut, me-ein kamokha.
10:8 But they are together brutish and foolish,
an instruction of vanities, etz hu.
10:9 Kesef beaten into plates is brought from Tarshish,
and zahav me-Ufaz,
the work of the artificer and of the hands of the goldsmith;
t'khelet and purple for their clothing;
they are all ma'aseh chakhamim.
10:10 But YHWH Elohim; hu Elohim chayyim, u'Melekh olam:
at his wrath ha-aretz trembles,
and goyim are not able to abide his indignation.
10:11 Thus shall you say to them, "Elohim that have not made the heavens and the earth, these shall perish from the earth, and from under the heavens."4
10:12 He has made eretz by his power,
he has established the world by his chokhma,
and by his understanding has he stretched out shamayim.
10:13 On the giving of his voice, there is a tumult of mayim ba-shamayim,
and he causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of ha-aretz.
He makes lightning for the rain
and brings forth the wind out of his storehouses.
10:14 Kol adam is stupid from (lack of) knowledge;
every refiner is put to shame by his engraved image,
for his molten image is falsehood,
and there is no breath in them.
10:15 They are vanity, a work of delusion.
In the time of their punishment they shall perish.
10:16 "The Portion of Ya'akov" is not like these;
for he (is) the One who forms all things;
and Yisra'el is the tribe of his inheritance:
YHWH Tsva'ot is his name.
10:17 Gather me-eretz your bundle,
you who abide in the siege.
10:18 For thus says YHWH,
"Hinneh, I will sling out the inhabitants of ha-aretz
at this time,
and will distress them,
that they may find (me)."
10:19 Oy is me because of my hurt!
My wound is grievous,
but I said, "Truly this is a sickness,
and I must bear it."
10:20 My ohel is destroyed
and all my cords are broken.
My banim have gone forth from me, and they are no more.
There is none to spread my ohel any more,
and to set up my curtains.
10:21 For the shepherds are become stupid,
and have not inquired of YHWH.
Therefore they have not prospered,
and all their flocks are scattered.
10:22 The voice of news, behold, it comes,
and a great commotion out of the north country,
to make arei Y'hudah
a desolation, a dwelling-place of jackals.
10:23 YHWH, I know that the way of man is not in himself.
It is not in man who walks to direct his steps.
10:24 YHWH, correct me b'mishpat,
not in your anger, lest you bring me to nothing.
10:25 Pour out your wrath on ha-goyim that don't know you,
and on mishpachot that don't call on your name,
for they have devoured Ya'akov,
yes, they have devoured him and consumed him,
and have laid waste his habitation.

PEREQ ‏יא‎
CHAPTER 11

11:1 Ha-davar that came to Yir'm'yahu from YHWH, saying,   11:2 "Hear divrei ha-b'rit hazeh, and speak to ish Y'hudah, and to the inhabitants of Yerushalaim;   11:3 and say to them, 'Thus says YHWH, Elohei Yisra'el: "Cursed is ha-ish who doesn't hear divrei ha-b'rit hazot,   11:4 which I commanded avoteikhem ba-yom that I brought them forth me-eretz Mitzrayim, out of the iron furnace, saying, 'Obey my voice, and do them, according to all which I command you.  So shall you be my people, and I will be your Elohim,'   11:5 that I may establish the oath which I swore to avoteikhem, to give them eretz flowing with milk and honey, as at ha-yom hazeh."'" Then I answered and said, "Amein, YHWH".

11:6 Vayomer YHWH to me, "Proclaim kol ha-d'varim ha-eleh b'arei Y'hudah, and in the streets of Yerushalaim, saying, 'Hear divrei ha-b'rit hazot, and do them.   11:7 For I earnestly protested to avoteikhem in the day that I brought them up me-eretz Mitzrayim, ad ha-yom hazeh, rising early and protesting, saying, "Obey my voice."   11:8 Yet they didn't obey, nor turn their ear, but everyone walked in the stubbornness of their lev ha-ra.  Therefore I brought on them kol divrei ha-b'rit hazot, which I commanded them to do, but they didn't do them.'"

11:9 Vayomer YHWH to me, "A conspiracy is found b'ish Y'hudah and among the inhabitants of Yerushalaim.   11:10 They have turned back to the iniquities of their avot, who refused to hear my d'varim, and they are gone after Elohim acherim to serve them. Beit Yisra'el u'veit Y'hudah have broken my b'rit which I made with their avot."   11:11 Therefore thus says YHWH, "Hinneh, I will bring evil on them, which they shall not be able to escape, and they shall cry to me, but I will not listen to them.   11:12 Then shall arei Y'hudah and the inhabitants of Yerushalaim go and cry to ha-elohim to which they offer incense, but they will not save them at all in the time of their trouble.   11:13 For according to the number of your cities are your elohim, Y'hudah, and according to the number of the streets of Yerushalaim you have set up mizb'chot to the shameful thing, even mizb'chot to burn incense la-Ba'al.

11:14 "Therefore don't pray for ha`am hazeh nor lift up cry nor prayer for them, for I will not hear them in the time that they cry to me because of their trouble.
11:15 What has my beloved to do in my house,
seeing she has worked many evils,
and basar kodesh is passed from you? When you do evil, then you rejoice."
11:16 YHWH called your name, "A green yayit, yafeh, with goodly fruit." With the noise of a great tumult he has kindled fire on it, and the branches of it are broken.
11:17 For YHWH Tsva'ot, who planted you, has pronounced evil against you because of the evil of beit Yisra'el u'veit Y'hudah, which they have worked for themselves in provoking me to anger by offering incense la-Ba'al.

11:18 YHWH gave me knowledge of it, and I knew it;
then you showed me their doings.
11:19 But I was like a gentle lamb that is led to the slaughter,
and I didn't know that they had devised devices against me, (saying),
"Let us destroy the tree with its lechem,
and let us cut him off me-eretz chayyim,
that his name may be no more remembered."
11:20 But, YHWH Tsva'ot, who judges with tzedek,
who tries the heart and the mind,
I shall see your vengeance on them,
for to you I have revealed my cause.
11:21 Therefore thus says YHWH concerning anshei `Anatot, who seek your nefesh, saying, "You shall not prophesy b'shem YHWH, that you not die by our hand."   11:22 Therefore thus says YHWH Tsva'ot, "Hinneh, I will punish them: the young men shall die by the sword; baneihem u'v'noteihem shall die by famine;   11:23 and there shall be no remnant to them: for I will bring evil on anshei `Anatot, the year of their punishment."

PEREQ ‏יב‎
CHAPTER 12

12:1 Tzaddik attah, YHWH, when I bring a case before you;
yet I would speak about your mishpatim with you.
Why does the way of the wicked prosper?
Why are all they at ease who deal very treacherously?
12:2 You have planted them, yes, they have taken root;
they grow, yes, they bring forth fruit.
You are near in their mouth
and far from their inmost being.
12:3 But you, YHWH, know me;
you have seen me,
and tested my heart toward you.
Pull them out like sheep for the slaughter,
and prepare them for the day of slaughter.
12:4 How long shall ha-aretz mourn
and the herbs of kol ha-sadeh wither?
for the wickedness of those who dwell therein,
b'hemot are consumed, and the birds,
because they said, "He shall not see our latter end."
12:5 "If you have run with the footmen, and they have wearied you,
then how can you contend with horses?
And though in aretz shalom* you are secure,
yet how will you do in the pride of ha-Yarden [descender]?
12:6 "For even your brothers, and beit avikha,
even they have dealt treacherously with you;
even they have cried aloud after you.
Don't believe them, though they speak tovot to you."
12:7 "I have forsaken my bayit,
I have cast off my heritage;
I have given the dearly beloved of my nefesh
into the hand of her enemies.
12:8 "My heritage is become to me
as a lion in the forest.
She has uttered her voice against me;
therefore I have hated her.
12:9 "Is my heritage to me as a speckled bird of prey?
Are the birds of prey against her round about?
Go, assemble kol ha-chayyot ha-sadeh,
bring them to devour.
12:10 "Roim rabim have destroyed my vineyard,
they have trodden my portion under foot,
they have made my pleasant portion a desolate midbar.
12:11 "They have made it a desolation; it mourns to me, being desolate.
Kol ha-aretz is made desolate,
because no man lays it to heart.
12:12 "Destroyers are come
on all the bare heights ba-midbar;
for the sword of YHWH devours
from the one end of ha-aretz to the other end of ha-aretz;
ein shalom l'chol basar
.
12:13 "They have sown wheat and have reaped thorns;
they have put themselves to pain, and profit nothing,
and you shall be ashamed of your fruits,
because of the fierce anger of YHWH."
12:14 Thus says YHWH against all my evil neighbors who touch the inheritance which I have caused ami Yisra'el to inherit: "Hinneh, I will pluck them up off of their adamah, and will pluck up beit Y'hudah from among them.   12:15 It shall happen that after I have plucked them up, I will return and have compassion on them, and I will bring them again, every man to his heritage and every man to his eretz.   12:16 It shall happen, if they will diligently learn darkhei ami, to swear by my name, 'Chai-YHWH,' even as they taught my people to swear by Ba'al, then shall they be built up in the midst of my people.   12:17 But if they will not hear, then will I pluck up ha-goy ha-hu, plucking up and destroying it," says YHWH.

CHAPTER 13

13:1 Thus says YHWH to me, "Go, buy a linen belt, and put it on your loins, and don't put it al-mayim."   13:2 So I bought a belt according to d'var YHWH, and put it on my loins.   13:3 D'var YHWH came to me the second time, saying,   13:4 "Take the belt that you have bought, which is on your loins, and arise, go to P'rat [sweet water, Euphrates], and hide it there in a cleft of the rock."   13:5 So I went, and hid it by P'rat, as YHWH commanded me.   13:6 It happened after yamim rabim, that YHWH said to me, "Arise, go to P'rat, and take the belt from there, which I commanded you to hide there."   13:7 Then I went to P'rat and dug and took the belt from the place where I had hid it, and behold, the belt was marred; it was profitable for nothing.

13:8 Then d'var YHWH came to me, saying,   13:9   "Thus says YHWH, 'After this manner I will mar the pride of Y'hudah, and the great pride of Yerushalaim.   13:10 Ha`am hazeh ha-ra, who refuse to hear my d'varim, who walk in the stubbornness of their heart, and have gone after elohim acherim to serve them, and to bow down to them, shall be even as this belt, which is profitable for nothing.   13:11 For as the belt cleaves to the loins of a man, so have I caused kol beit Yisra'el and kol beit Y'hudah to cleave to me, says YHWH; that they may be to me for a people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory: but they would not hear.'

13:12 "Therefore you shall speak to them ha-davar hazeh: 'Thus says YHWH, Elohei Yisra'el, "Every bottle shall be filled with yayin:"' and they shall tell you, 'Don't we certainly know that every bottle shall be filled with yayin?'   13:13 Then you shall tell them, 'Thus says YHWH, "Hinneh, I will fill all the inhabitants of ha-aretz hazeh, even ha-m'lakhim who sit al-David on his kiseh, and ha-kohanim, and ha-nevi'im, and all the inhabitants of Yerushalaim, with drunkenness.   13:14 I will dash them one against another, v'ha-avot and ha-banim together," says YHWH: "I will not pity nor spare, nor have compassion, that I should not destroy them."'"
13:15 Hear and give ear; don't be proud;
for YHWH has spoken.
13:16 Give glory to YHWH your Elohim,
before he causes darkness,
and before your feet stumble
on the dark mountains,
and while you look for light,
he turns it into the shadow of death
and makes it gross darkness.
13:17 But if you will not hear it,
my nefesh shall weep in secret places for pride,
and my eye shall weep sore
and run down with tears,
because the flock of YHWH was seized.
13:18 Say la-melekh and to the queen mother:
"Humble yourselves, sit down,
for the place of your head will come down,
even the crown of your glory."
13:19 Arei ha-negev are shut up,
and there is none to open them.
Y'hudah is carried away captive; all of it exiled completely.
13:20 "Lift up your eyes and see those who come from the north.
Where is the flock that was given to you,
your beautiful flock?
13:21 "What will you say, when he shall set over you as head
those whom you have yourself taught to be friends to you?
Shall not sorrows take hold of you,
as of a woman in travail?
13:22 "If you say in your heart,
'Why are these things come on me?'
For the greatness of your iniquity
are your skirts uncovered,
and your heels suffer violence.
13:23 "Can Kushi change his skin,
or the leopard his spots?
Then may you also do good,
who are accustomed to doing evil.
13:24 "Therefore will I scatter them,
as the stubble that passes away,
l'ruach midbar.
13:25 "This is your lot, the portion measured to you
from me," says YHWH,
"because you have forgotten me
and trusted in falsehood.
13:26 "So also I have stripped off your skirts over your face,
and your shame shall appear.
13:27 "I have seen your abominations,
even your adulteries and your neighing,
the lewdness of your prostitution,
on the hills ba-sadeh.
Oy to you, Yerushalaim!
Will you not be made clean? How long shall it yet be?"

CHAPTER 14

14:1 That which came: D'var YHWH el-Yir'm'yahu concerning the droughts.
14:2 "Y'hudah mourns,
and the gates of it languish.
They sit in mourning,
and the cry of Yerushalaim has gone up.
14:3 "Their nobles send their little ones la-mayim.
They come to the cisterns and find no mayim;
they return with their vessels empty;
they are ashamed and humiliated,
and cover their heads.
14:4 "Because ha-adamah, which is cracked
because no rain has been ba-aretz,
the plowmen are disappointed,
they cover their heads.
14:5 "Yes, the hind also in the field calves, and forsakes (her young),
because there is no grass.
14:6 "The wild donkeys stand on the bare heights,
they pant for air like jackals;
their eyes fail
because there is no herbage.
14:7 "Though our iniquities testify against us,
work for your name's sake, YHWH;
for our backslidings are many;
we have sinned against you.
14:8 "You hope of Yisra'el,
its Moshia in the time of trouble,
why should you be as a foreigner ba-aretz,
and as a wayfaring man who turns aside to stay for a night?
14:9 Why should you be like a scared man,
as a gibor who can't save?
Yet you, YHWH, are in the midst of us,
and we are called by your name;
don't leave us.
14:10 Thus says YHWH la-am hazeh, "Even so have they loved to wander.  They have not refrained their feet.  Therefore YHWH does not accept them; now will he remember their iniquity and visit their chattot.   14:11 Vayomer YHWH to me, "Don't pray for this people for good.   14:12 When they fast, I will not hear their cry, and when they offer olah u'minchah, I will not accept them; but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence."

14:13 Then I said, "Ah, Adonai YHWH! Hinneh, ha-nevi'im tell them, 'You shall not see the sword, neither shall you have famine, but I will give you shalom* emet ba-maqom hazeh.'"   14:14 Vayomer YHWH to me, "Ha-nevi'im prophesy lies in my name.  I didn't send them, nor have I commanded them, nor did I speak to them.  They prophesy to you a lying vision, and divination, and a thing of nothing, and the deceit of their own heart.   14:15 Therefore thus says YHWH concerning ha-nevi'im who prophesy in my name, and I didn't send them, yet they say, 'Sword and famine shall not be in this land:' By sword and famine shall those nevi'im be consumed.   14:16 The people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Yerushalaim because of the famine and the sword, and they shall have none to bury them - them, neshehem u'venehem u'venotehem - for I will pour their wickedness on them.   14:17 You shall say ha-davar hazeh to them,
'Let my eyes run down with tears lailah va-yomam,
and let them not cease;
for the virgin bat ami is broken with a great breach,
with a very grievous wound.
14:18 'If I go forth into ha-sadeh,
hinneh
, the slain with the sword!
And if I enter into ha`ir,
v'hinneh
, those who are sick with famine!
For both ha-navi and ha-kohen
go about el-eretz that they do not know.'"
14:19 Have you utterly rejected Y'hudah?
Has your nefesh loathed Tziyon?
Why have you struck us, and there is no healing for us?
We looked for shalom, but no good (came);
and for a time of healing, v'hinneh, terror!
14:20 We acknowledge, YHWH, our wickedness,
and the iniquity of avoteinu; for we have sinned against you.
14:21 Do not abhor (us), for your name's sake;
do not disgrace the kiseh of your kavod.
Remember, don't break, your b'rit with us.
14:22 Are there any among the vanities of ha-goyim who give rain?
Or can ha-shamayim give showers?
Aren't you he, YHWH Eloheinu?
Therefore we will wait for you, for you do kol eleh.

CHAPTER 15

15:1 Vayomer YHWH to me, "Though Moshe u'Sh'mu'el l'fanai, yet my nefesh would not be el-ha`am hazeh.  Cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth.   15:2 It shall happen, when they tell you, 'Where shall we go forth?' then you shall tell them, Thus says YHWH:
"Such as are for death, to death,
and such as are for the sword, to the sword,
and such as are for the famine, to the famine,
and such as are for captivity, to captivity."'
15:3 "I will appoint over them four kinds," says YHWH: "the sword to kill, and the dogs to tear, and the birds of ha-shamayim, and behemot ha-aretz to devour and to destroy.   15:4 I will cause them to be tossed back and forth among kol maml'chot ha-aretz, because of M'nashsheh ben Chizkiyahu, melekh Y'hudah, for that which he did in Yerushalaim.
15:5 "For who will have pity on you, Yerushalaim?
or who will bemoan you?
or who will turn aside to ask of your welfare?
15:6 "You have rejected me," says YHWH,
"you are gone backward:
therefore have I stretched out my hand against you, and destroyed you;
I am weary with repenting.
15:7 "I have winnowed them with a fan
in the gates of ha-aretz;
I have bereaved them of children, I have destroyed my people;
they didn't return from their derekh.
15:8 "Their widows are increased to me
above the sand of yamim;
I have brought on them against the mother of the young men
a destroyer at noonday:
I have caused anguish and terrors to fall on her suddenly.
15:9 "She who has borne seven languishes;
she has breathed out her nefesh;
her sun is gone down while it was yet day;
she has been ashamed and humiliated,
and the remnant of them will I deliver to the sword
before their enemies," says YHWH.
15:10 Woe is me, my mother, that you have borne me
a man of strife and a man of contention l'khol ha-aretz!
I have not lent, neither have men lent to me;
(yet) every one of them curses me.
15:11 YHWH said, "Most assuredly I will set you free for good.
Surely I will cause the enemy to make supplication to you
in the time of evil and in the time of affliction.
15:12 "Can one break iron, iron from the north,
and n'choshet?
15:13 "Your substance and your treasures
I will give for a spoil without price,
and that for all your chattot,
even in all your borders.
15:14 "I will make (you) pass with your enemies
b'eretz which you don't know;
for a fire is kindled in my anger,
which shall burn on you."
15:15 YHWH, you know;
remember me, and visit me,
and avenge me of my persecutors;
don't take me away in your longsuffering:
know that for your sake I have suffered reproach.
15:16 Your d'varim were found, and I ate them;
and your d'varim were to me a joy and the simchah of my heart:
for I am called by your name,
YHWH, Elohei Tsva'ot.
15:17 I didn't sit b'sod of those who make merry,
nor rejoiced;
I sat alone because of your hand;
for you have filled me with indignation.
15:18 Why is my pain perpetual,
and my wound incurable, which refuses to be healed?
Will you indeed be to me as a deceitful brook,
as waters that fail?
15:19 Therefore thus says YHWH,
"If you return, then will I bring you again,
that you may stand before me;
and if you take forth the precious from the vile,
you shall be as my mouth:
they shall return to you,
but you shall not return to them.
15:20 "I will make you to this people
a fortified brazen wall,
and they shall fight against you,
but they shall not prevail against you,
for I am with you to save you
and to deliver you," says YHWH.
15:21 "I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked,
and I will redeem you out of the hand of the terrible."

CHAPTER 16

16:1  D'var YHWH came also to me, saying,   16:2  "You shall not take an ishah, neither shall you have banim u'vanot ba-maqom hazeh."   16:3  For thus says YHWH concerning ha-banim and concerning ha-banot who are born ba-maqom hazeh, and concerning their mothers who bore them, and concerning their fathers who became the father of them ba-eretz hazot:   16:4 "They shall die grievous deaths.  They shall not be lamented, neither shall they be buried.  They shall be as dung al-p'nei ha-adamah, and they shall be consumed by the sword, and by famine; and their dead bodies shall be food for the birds of ha-shamayim ul'vehemat ha-aretz."

16:5 For thus says YHWH, "Don't enter into the house of mourning, neither go to lament, neither bemoan them, for I have taken away my shalom* from ha`am hazeh," says YHWH, "ha-chesed and tender mercies.   16:6 Both g'dolim uq'tanim shall die ba-aretz hazot; they shall not be buried, neither shall men lament for them, nor cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them;   16:7 neither shall men break (bread) for them in mourning, to comfort them for the dead; neither shall men give them the cup of consolation to drink for their father or for their mother.   16:8 You shall not go into the house of feasting to sit with them, to eat and to drink."   16:9 For thus says YHWH Tsva'ot, Elohei Yisra'el: "Hinneh, I will cause to cease min ha-maqom hazeh, before your eyes and in your days, qol sason v'qol simchah, qol chatan v'qol kalah

16:10 "It shall happen, when you shall show this people all these words, and they shall tell you, 'Why has YHWH pronounced kol ha-ra'ah ha-g'dolah hazot against us? or what is our iniquity? or what is our sin that we have committed against YHWH Eloheinu?'   16:11 "Then shall you tell them, 'Because avoteikhem have forsaken me,' says YHWH, 'and have walked after elohim acherim, and have served them, and have bowed down to them, and have forsaken me, and have not kept my Torah,   16:12 and you have done evil more than avoteikhem; for hinneh, you walk every one after the stubbornness of his lev ra'ah, so that you don't listen to me.   16:13 Therefore will I cast you forth out of ha-aretz hazeh al-ha-aretz that you have not known, neither you nor avoteikhem; and there shall you serve elohim acherim yomam va-lailah, for I will show you no favor.'

16:14 "Therefore hinneh, the days come," says YHWH, "that it shall no more be said, 'As YHWH lives, who brought up b'nei Yisra'el me-eretz Mitzrayim;'   16:15 but, 'As YHWH lives, who brought up b'nei Yisra'el me-eretz the north, and from all the countries where he had driven them.' I will bring them again into their land that I gave to their avot.

16:16 "Hinneh, I will send for many fishermen,"[A] says YHWH, "and they shall fish them up; and afterward I will send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain, and from every hill, and out of the clefts of the rocks.   16:17 For my eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from my face, neither is their iniquity concealed from my eyes.   16:18 First I will recompense their iniquity and their chattat double, because they have polluted my eretz with the carcasses of their detestable things, and have filled my inheritance with their abominations."

16:19 YHWH, my strength, and my stronghold,
and my refuge in the day of affliction,
to you shall goyim come
from the ends of the earth, and shall say,
"Avoteinu have inherited nothing but lies,
vanity and things in which there is no profit."
16:20 Shall a man make to himself elohim,
which yet are no elohim?
16:21 "Therefore behold, I will cause them to know,
this once will I cause them to know
my hand and my might;
and they shall know that my name is YHWH."

CHAPTER 17

17:1 Chattat Y'hudah is written with a pen of iron,
with the point of a diamond, (it is) engraved
on the tablet of their heart,
and on the horns of your altars,
17:2 while their children remember their mizb'chot and their Asherim
by the green trees on the high hills.
17:3 My mountain ba-sadeh,
I will give your substance and all your treasures for a spoil,
your high places, because of chattat, throughout all your borders.
17:4 You, even of yourself, shall discontinue from your heritage
that I gave you;
and I will cause you to serve your enemies
ba-aretz which you don't know:
for you have kindled a fire in my anger
which shall burn ad-olam.
17:5 Thus says YHWH:
"Cursed is the man who trusts ba-adam,
and makes basar his strength,
and whose heart departs from YHWH.
17:6 "For he shall be like the heath[? - 6199] ba-aravah,
and shall not see when good comes,
but shall inhabit the parched places ba-midbar,
a salt land and not inhabited.
17:7 "Blessed is the man who trusts in YHWH,
and whose trust YHWH is.
17:8 "For he shall be as a tree planted al-mayim,
who spreads out its roots by the river,
and shall not fear when heat comes,
but its leaf shall be green;
and shall not be careful in the year of drought,
neither shall cease from yielding fruit.
17:9 "The heart is deceitful above all things,
and it is exceedingly corrupt:
who can know it?
17:10 "I, YHWH, search the mind,
I try the inward parts,
even to give every man according to his ways,
according to the fruit of his doings.
17:11 "As the partridge that broods but does not hatch,
so is he who gets riches, and not by right;
in the midst of his days they shall leave him,
and at his end he shall be a naval."
17:12 Kiseh kavod On high from the beginning
is the place of our mikdash.
17:13 Mikvah Yisra'el YHWH,
all who forsake you shall be disappointed.
Those who depart from me shall be written ba-aretz,
because they have forsaken YHWH, the spring of mayim chayyim.
17:14 Heal me, YHWH, and I shall be healed;
save me, and I shall be saved:
for you are my praise.
17:15 Hinneh, they tell me,
"Where is d'var YHWH?
Let it come now."
17:16 As for me, I have not hurried from being a ro'eh after you;
neither have I desired the woeful day;
you know: that which came out of my lips
was before your face.
17:17 Don't be a terror to me:
you are my refuge ba-yom ra'ah.
17:18 Let them be disappointed who persecute me,
but let me not be disappointed;
let them be dismayed, but don't let me be dismayed;
bring on them yom ra'ah,
and with double breaking, break them.
17:19 Thus said YHWH to me: "Go, and stand in the gate of beit ha`am, through which malkhei Y'hudah come in, and by which they go out, and in all the gates of Yerushalaim;   17:20 and tell them, 'Hear d'var YHWH, malkhei Y'hudah, v'khol Y'hudah, and all the inhabitants of Yerushalaim, that enter in by these gates:   17:21 Thus says YHWH, "Take heed to your nafshot, and bear no burden b'yom ha-Shabbat, nor bring it in by the gates of Yerushalaim;   17:22 neither carry forth a burden out of your houses b'yom ha-Shabbat, neither do any work: but yom ha-Shabbat make kodesh, as I commanded avoteikhem.   17:23 But they didn't listen, neither turned their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, and might not receive instruction.

17:24 "It shall happen, if you diligently listen to me," says YHWH, "to bring in no burden through the gates of ha`ir hazeh b'yom ha-Shabbat, but to make yom ha-Shabbat a yom kodesh, to do no work therein,   17:25 then shall there enter in by the gates of ha`ir hazeh m'lakhim v'sarim, sitting al-kiseh David, riding in chariots and on horses, they, and their sarim, ish Y'hudah, and the inhabitants of Yerushalaim; and ha`ir hazeh shall remain inhabited l'olam.   17:26 They shall come from arei Y'hudah, and from the places round about Yerushalaim, u'me-eretz Binyamin, u-min-ha-Sh'felah, u-min-ha-har, u-min-ha-negev, bringing olah, and sacrifices, and minchah, and frankincense, and bringing todah beit YHWH.   17:27 But if you will not listen to me to make yom ha-Shabbat a yom kodesh, and not to bear a burden and enter in at the gates of Yerushalaim b'yom ha-Shabbat, then will I kindle a fire in the gates of it, and it shall devour the palaces of Yerushalaim, and it shall not be quenched."'"

CHAPTER 18

18:1 Ha-davar which came to Yir'm'yahu from YHWH lemor2 "Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause you to hear my d'varim."  3 Then I went down to the potter's house, v'hinneh, he was making a work on the wheels.  4 When the vessel that he made of the clay was marred in the hand of the potter, he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.A

18:5 Then d'var YHWH came to me, lemor6 "Beit Yisra'el, can't I do with you as this potter? says YHWHHinneh, as the clay in the potter's hand, so are you in my hand, beit Yisra'el7 At what instant I shall speak concerning a goy, and concerning a mamlakhah, to pluck up and to break down and to destroy it;  8 if that goy, concerning which I have spoken, turn from their evil, I will rue the evil that I thought to do to them.  9 At what instant I shall speak concerning a goy, and concerning a mamlakhah, to build and to plant it;  10 if they do that which is evil in my sight, that they not obey my voice, then I will rue the good, with which I said I would benefit them.  11 Now therefore, speak el-ish Y'hudah, and to the inhabitants of Yerushalaim, lemor, 'Koh amar YHWH: "Hinneh, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: everyone return now from his derekh ra'ah, and amend your d'rakhot and your doings." '  12 But they say, 'It is in vain; for we will walk after our own devices, and every one of us will do after the stubbornness of his lev ra'ah'.
13 "Therefore koh amar YHWH:
'Ask now ba-goyim,
who has heard such things;
the virgin of Yisra'el
has done a very horrible thing.
14 'Shall the snow of Levanon fail mi-tzur sadeh?
or shall the cold waters that flow down from afar be dried up?
15 'For my people have forgotten me,
they have burned incense to vanity,
and they have been made to stumble in their d'rakhot,
in the ancient paths,
to walk in byways,
in a derekh not built up,
16 'to make their land an astonishment,
and a perpetual hissing.
Everyone who passes thereby shall be astonished,
and shake his head.
17 'I will scatter them as with a ruach kedem
before the enemy.
I will show them the back, and not the face,
in the day of their calamity.'"
18:18 Then they said, "Come and let us devise devices against Yir'm'yahu, for Torah shall not perish mi-kohen nor counsel me-chakham v'davar mi-navi.  Come, and let us strike him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his d'varim."
19 Give heed to me, YHWH,
and listen to the voice of those who contend with me.
20 Shall evil be recompensed for good?
for they have dug a pit for my nefesh.
Remember how I stood before you
to speak good for them,
to turn away your wrath from them.
21 Therefore deliver up their banim to the famine,
and give them over to the power of the sword;
and let their nashim become childless, and widows;
and let their anashim be slain of mavet,
their young men struck of the sword in battle.
22 Let a cry be heard from their batim,
when you shall bring a troop suddenly on them;
for they have dug a pit to take me,
and hid snares for my feet.
23 And you, YHWH, know
all their counsel against me to kill me;
don't forgive their iniquity,
neither blot out their chattat from your sight;
but let them be overthrown before you;
deal with them in the time of your anger.

20:1 Now Pashchur, ben Immer ha-kohen, who was chief officer b'veit YHWH, heard Yir'm'yahu prophesying ha-d'varim ha-eleh2 Then Pashchur struck Yir'm'yahu ha-navi, and put him in the stocks that were in the upper gate of Binyamin, asher b'veit YHWH3 It happened on the next day, that Pashchur brought forth Yir'm'yahu out of the stocks. Vayomer Yir'm'yahu to him, "YHWH has not called your name Pashchur, but Magor-Missaviv [terror on every side].  4 Ki koh amar YHWH, 'Hinneh, I will make you a terror to yourself, and to all your friends; and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and your eyes shall see it, and I will give kol Y'hudah b'yad Melekh Bavel, and he shall carry them captive into Bavel, and shall kill them with the sword.  5 Moreover I will give all the riches of ha`ir hazot, and all the gains of it, and all the precious things of it, yes, all the treasures of malkhei Y'hudah will I give into the hand of their enemies, and they shall make them a prey and take them and carry them to Bavel6 V'attah, Pashchur, and all who dwell in your bayit shall go into captivity; and you shall come to Bavel, and there you shall die, and there you shall be buried, you, and all your friends, to whom you have prophesied falsely.'"

7 YHWH, you have persuaded me, and I was persuaded;
you are stronger than I, and have prevailed.
I am become a laughingstock all the day,
everyone mocks me.
8 For as often as I speak, I cry out.
I cry, "Violence and destruction!"
because d'var YHWH is made a reproach to me,
and a derision, all the day.
9 If I say, "I will not make mention of him,
nor speak any more in his name,"
then there is in my heart as it were a burning fire
shut up in my bones,
and I am weary with forbearing,
and I can't contain.
10 For I have heard the defaming of many:
"Terror on every side [magor missaviv].
Denounce, and we will denounce him,"
say all my familiar friends,
those who watch for my fall.
"Peradventure he will be persuaded, and we shall prevail against him,
and we shall take our revenge on him."
11 But YHWH is with me as an awesome mighty one:
therefore my persecutors shall stumble, and they shall not prevail;
they shall be utterly disappointed, because they have not dealt wisely,
even with an everlasting dishonor which shall never be forgotten.
12 But, YHWH Tsva'ot, who tests tzaddik,
who sees the heart and the mind,
let me see your vengeance on them;
for to you I have revealed my cause.
13 Shiru la-YHWH, hallelu et-YHWH;
for he has delivered the nefesh of the needy from the hand of evil-doers.
14 Cursed be the day in which I was born.
Don't let the day in which my mother bore me be blessed.
15 Cursed ha-ish asher bisar et-avi, lemor,
"A man-child is born to you,"
making him very glad.
16 Let ha-ish ha-hu be as the cities
which YHWH overthrew, without regretting,
and let him hear a cry ba-boqer,
and a shout of alarm at noontime,
17 because he didn't kill me from the womb;
and so my mother would have been my grave,
and her womb always great.
18 Why did I come forth out of the womb
to see labor and sorrow,
that my days should be consumed with shame?

CHAPTER 21

21:1 Ha-davar which came to Yir'm'yahu from YHWH, when ha-melekh Tzidkiyahu sent to him Pashchur ben Malkiyah v'Tzefanyah ben Ma`aseyah ha-kohen, lemor2 "Please inquire of YHWH for us; for Nevukhadretztzar [Nebo, protect the boundary] melekh Bavel makes war against us: peradventure YHWH will deal with us according to all his wondrous works, that he may go up from us."

3 Vayomer Yir'm'yahu to them, "Thus you shall tell Tzidkiyahu4 'Koh amar YHWH, Elohei Yisra'el, "Hinneh, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands, with which you fight against melekh Bavel, and against ha-Kasdim who besiege you, without the walls; and I will gather them into the midst of ha`ir ha-zot5 I myself will fight against you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation.  6 I will strike the inhabitants of ha`ir ha-zot, both adam and b'hemah: they shall die of a great pestilence.  7 Acharei," says YHWH, "I will deliver Tzidkiyahu, melekh Y'hudah, and his avadim, and ha`am, even such as are left ba`ir ha-zot from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, b'yad Nevukhadretztzar, melekh Bavel, uv'yad of their enemies, and uv'yad of those who seek their nafshot: and he shall strike them with the edge of the sword; he shall not spare them, neither have pity, nor have mercy."'

8 "V'el-ha`am hazeh you shall say, 'Koh amar YHWH: "Hinneh, I set before you derekh ha-chayyim and derekh ha-mavet9 He who remains ba`ir hazot shall die by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence; but he who goes out, and passes over al-ha-Kasdim who besiege you, he shall live, and his nefesh shall be to him for a prey.   10 For I have set my face ba`ir hazot l'ra'ah v'lo l'tovah," says YHWH: "it shall be given b'yad melekh Bavel, and he shall burn it ba-esh."'

11 "Ul'veit melekh Y'hudah, 'hear d'var YHWH12 Beit David, koh amar YHWH:
"Execute la-boqer mishpat,
and deliver him who is robbed out of the hand of the oppressor,
lest my wrath go forth like fire,
and burn so that none can quench it,
because of the evil of your doings.
13 "Hinneh, I am against you, inhabitant of the valley,
of the rock of the plain," says YHWH;
"you that say, 'Who shall come down against us,
or who shall enter into our habitations?
14 "I will punish you according to the fruit of your doings," says YHWH;
"and I will kindle a fire in her forest,
and it shall devour all that is round about her."'"

CHAPTER 22

22:1 Thus said YHWH: "Go down to beit melekh Y'hudah, and speak ha-davar hazeh there,  2 Say, 'Sh'ma davar YHWH, melekh Y'hudah, who sits al-kiseh David, attah, v'avodeikha, and your people who enter in by these gates.  3 Koh amar YHWH: "Execute mishpat utz'dakah, and deliver him who is robbed out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence, to the foreigner, the fatherless, or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood ba-maqom hazeh4 For if you do ha-davar hazeh indeed, then shall there enter in by the gates of ha-bayit hazeh m'lakhim David sitting on his kiseh , riding in chariots and on horses, he, and his avadim, and his people.  5 But if you will not hear ha-d'varim ha-eleh, I swear by myself," says YHWH, "that ha-bayit hazeh shall become a desolation."'"  6 Ki koh amar YHWH al-beit melekh Y'hudah:
" Gil`ad attah to me,
rosh ha-L'vanon.
Surely I will make you midbar,
arim
which are not inhabited.
7  "I will prepare destroyers against you,
everyone with his weapons,
and they shall cut down your choice cedars,
and cast them al-ha-esh.
22:8 "Goyim rabim shall pass by ha`ir hazot, and every man shall say to his neighbor, 'Why has YHWH done thus la`ir ha-g'dolah hazot?'  9 Then they shall answer, 'Because they forsook b'rit YHWH Eloheihem, and bowed down to elohim acherim, and served them.'"
10 Don't weep for the dead, nor bemoan him;
but weep sore for him who goes away;
for he shall return no more,
nor see the land of his birth.
22:11 Ki koh amar YHWH about Shallum ben Yoshiyahu, melekh Y'hudah, who reigned instead of Yoshiyahu aviv, who went forth out of this place: "He shall not return there any more.  12 But ba-maqom where they have led him captive, there he shall die, and he shall see ha-aretz hazot no more.
13 "Hoy to him who builds his bayit without tzedek,
and his chambers without mishpat;
who uses his neighbor's service without wages,
and doesn't give him his hire;
14 who says, 'I will build me a wide bayit
and spacious chambers,
and cuts out windows;
and it is ceiled with cedar, and painted with bright red.'
15 "Shall you reign because you strive to excel in cedar?
Didn't your father eat and drink,
and do mitzpat utz'dakah?
Then it was well with him.
16  "He judged the cause of the poor and needy;
then it was well.
Wasn't this to know me?"
says YHWH.
17  "But your eyes and your heart
are not but for your covetousness,
and for shedding innocent blood,
and for oppression, and for violence, to do it."
22:18 Therefore koh amar YHWH al-Yehoyakim ben Yoshiyahu, melekh Y'hudah:
"They shall not lament for him:
'Hoy achi!' o 'Hoy achot!'
They shall not lament for him:
'Hoy adon! o 'Hoy his glory!'
19 "He shall be buried with the burial of a chamor,
drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Yerushalaim.

20 "Go up to ha-L'vanon, and cry;
and lift up your voice in Bashan,
and cry from `Avarimen;
for all your lovers are destroyed.
21 "I spoke to you in your prosperity;
but you said, 'I will not hear.'
This has been your manner from your youth,
that you didn't obey my voice.
22 "The ruach shall rule all your ro'im,
and your lovers shall go into captivity:
surely then you shall be ashamed and confounded
for all your wickedness.
23 "Inhabitant of L'vanon,
who makes your nest in the cedars,
how greatly to be pitied shall you be when pangs come on you,
the pain as of a woman in travail!
22:24 "Chai ani [As I live]," says YHWH, "though Konyahu5 ben Yehoyakim, melekh Y'hudah were the signet on my right hand, yet from there would I tear you away;  25 and I will give you into the hand of those who seek your nefesh, and into the hand of them of whom you are afraid, b'yad Nevukhadretztzar, melekh Bavel, uv'yad ha-Kasdim26 I will cast you out, and your mother who bore you, al-ha-aretz acheret, where you were not born; and there you shall die.  27 V'al ha-aretz whereunto their nefesh longs to return, there they shall not return.
28 "Is ha-ish hazeh Konyahu a despised broken vessel,
or a vessel in which none delights?
Why are they cast out, he and his zera,
and are cast al-ha-aretz which they don't know?
29  "Eretz, eretz, aretz,
hear d'var YHWH.
30 "Koh amar YHWH,
'Write ha-ish hazeh (as) childless,
a man who shall not prosper in his days;
for no more shall a man of his zera prosper,
sitting on kiseh David,
and ruling in Y'hudah.'"

CHAPTER 23

23:1 "Hoy ro'im who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!" says YHWH2 Therefore koh amar YHWH, Elohei Yisra'el, against ha-ro'im who feed my people: "You have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them; hinneh, I will visit on you the evil of your doings," says YHWH3 "I will gather the remnant of my flock mi-kol ha-aratzot where I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and multiply.  4 I will set up ro'im over them, who shall feed them; and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall any be lacking," says YHWH.

23:5 "Hinneh, the days come," says YHWH,
"that I will raise l'David a tzaddik Branch,
and he shall reign as melekh and deal wisely,
and shall execute mishpat u'tzaddik ba-aretz.
6 "In his days Y'hudah shall be saved,
and Yisra'el shall dwell safely;
v'zeh sh'mo by which he shall be called:
'YHWH Tzidkenu' [our righteousness].

23:7 "Therefore hinneh, the days come," says YHWH, "that they shall no more say, 'Chai-YHWH, who brought b'nei Yisra'el me-eretz Mitzrayim';  8 but, 'Chai-YHWH, who brought up and who led zera beit Yisra'el me-eretz out of the north country, and mi-kol ha-aratzot where I had driven them.' They shall dwell in their own adamah."

23:9 Concerning the (false) nevi'im:
My heart within me is broken,
all my bones shake;
I am like a drunken man,
and like a man whom yayin has overcome,
because of YHWH,
and because of his d'varei qadosh.
10 For ha-aretz is full of adulterers;
for because of swearing (or a curse) ha-aretz mourns;
the pastures of the midbar are dried up.
Their course is evil,
and their might is not right;
11 "For both navi and kohen are profane;
yes, in my house I have found their wickedness," says YHWH.
12 "Therefore their derekh shall be to them as slippery places in the darkness:
they shall be driven on, and fall therein;
for I will bring evil on them,
the year of their punishment," says YHWH.
13 "I have seen folly in the n'vi'ei Shomron;
they prophesied by Ba'al, and caused ami Yisra'el to err.
14 "In the n'vi'ei Yerushalaim also I have seen a horrible thing.
They commit adultery and walk in lies,
and they strengthen the hands of evil-doers,
so that none returns from his wickedness.
All of them have become to me as S'dom [burning],
and the inhabitants of it as `Amorah [submersion].
15 "Therefore koh amar YHWH Tsva'ot al-n'vi'im:
'Hinneh
, I will feed them with wormwood,
and make them drink the water of gall;
for from n'vi'ei Yerushalaim
has pollution gone forth into kol ha-aretz.'"
23:16 Koh amar YHWH Tsva'ot, "Don't listen al-divrei ha-nevi'im who prophesy to you: they teach you vanity; they speak a vision of their own heart, and lo mi-pi YHWH.
17 "They say continually to those who despise me, 'YHWH has said, "You shall have shalom"'*; and to everyone who walks in the stubbornness of his own heart they say, 'No evil shall come on you.'
18 "For who has stood b'sod YHWH,
that he should perceive and hear his davar?
Who has marked my davar, and heard it?
19 "Behold, the tempest of YHWH, his wrath, has gone forth,
yes, a whirling tempest:
it shall burst on the head of the wicked.
20 "The anger of YHWH shall not return
until he has executed and until he has performed the intents of his heart.
B'acharit ha-yamim you shall understand it perfectly.
23:21 "I did not send ha-nevi'im,
yet they ran:
I didn't speak to them,
yet they prophesied.
22 "But if they had stood in my sod,
then would they have caused my people to hear my d'varim,
and to turn them from their evil way,
and from the evil of their doings.
23:23 "Am I ha-Elohei (of the) nearby," says YHWH, "and not an Elohei (of the) far off?  24 "Can any hide himself in secret places so that I shall not see him?" says YHWH.  "Don't I fill ha-shamayim and ha-aretz?" says YHWH.  25 "I have heard what ha-nevi'im have said, who prophesy lies in my name, saying, 'I have dreamed, I have dreamed.'  26 How long shall this be in the heart of ha-nevi'im who prophesy lies, even ha-nevi'im of the deceit of their own heart,  27 who think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbor, as their fathers forgot my name for ha-Ba'al28 Ha-navi who has a dream, let him tell a dream; and he who has my davar, let him speak my davar emet.  What is the straw to the wheat?" says YHWH29 "Isn't my davar like fire?" says YHWH; "and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?  30 Therefore behold, I am against ha-n'vi'im," says YHWH, "everyone who steals my words from his neighbor.  31 Hinneh, I am against ha-n'vi'im," says YHWH, who use their tongues, and say, 'He says.'  32 Hinneh, I am against those who prophesy lying dreams," says YHWH, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their vain boasting: yet I didn't send them, nor command them; neither do they profit la-am hazeh at all," says YHWH.

23:33 "When ha`am hazeh o ha-navi o kohen shall ask you, saying, 'What is the burden of YHWH?' then you shall tell them, 'What burden! I will cast you off,' says YHWH34 V'ha-navi v'ha-kohen v'ha`am who shall say, 'The burden of YHWH,' I will even punish ha-ish ha-hu v'al-beito35 Thus shall everyone say to his neighbor, and everyone to his brother, 'What has YHWH answered?' or 'What has YHWH spoken?'  36 And the burden of YHWH will be remembered no more, for every man's own word shall be his burden, for you have perverted divrei Elohim chayyim, YHWH Tsva'ot Eloheinu37 Thus you shall say to ha-navi, 'What has YHWH answered you?' and, 'What has YHWH spoken?'  38 But if you say, 'The burden of YHWH; therefore koh amar YHWH: 'Because you say ha-davar hazeh, "The burden of YHWH," and I have sent to you, saying, "You shall not say, 'The burden of YHWH;'"'  39 therefore hinneh, I will utterly forget you, and I will cast you and ha`ir that I gave to you and to your avot away from my presence:  40 and I will bring an everlasting reproach on you, and a perpetual shame, which shall not be forgotten."

CHAPTER 24

24:1 YHWH showed me, v'hinneh, two baskets of figs lif'nei hekhal YHWH, after Nevukhadretztzar melekh Bavel had carried away captive Yekhonyah ben Yehoyakim, melekh Y'hudah and sarei Y'hudah, with the craftsmen and smiths, from Yerushalaim, and had brought them to Bavel2 One basket had very good figs, like the figs that are first-ripe; and the other basket had very bad figs, which could not be eaten, they were so bad.  3 Vayomer YHWH to me, "What do you see, Yir'm'yahu?" I said, "Figs; the good figs, very good; and the bad, very bad, that can't be eaten, they are so bad."

24:4 And it was that d'var YHWH came to me, saying,  5 "Koh amar YHWH, Elohei Yisra'el: 'Like these good figs, so will I regard the captives of Y'hudah, whom I have sent out min ha-maqom hazeh (to) eretz Kasdim l'tovah.   6 For I will set my eyes on them l'tovah, and I will bring them again al-ha-aretz hazot: and I will build them, and not pull them down; and I will plant them, and not pluck up.  7 I will give them a heart to know me, that I am YHWH: and they shall be my people, and I will be their Elohim; for they shall return to me with their whole heart.

24:8 'And the bad figs, which can't be eaten, they are so bad,' -- koh amar YHWH -- 'So will I give up Tzidkiyahu melekh Y'hudah and his sarim, and the residue of Yerushalaim, who remain ba-aretz hazot, and those who dwell b'eretz Mitzrayim9 I will even give them up to be tossed back and forth among kol maml'khot ha-aretz for evil; to be a reproach and a mashal, a taunt and a curse, in all places where I shall drive them.  10 I will send the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, among them, until they are consumed me-ha-adamah that I gave to them and to avoteihem'".

CHAPTER 25

25:1 Ha-davar that was to Yir'm'yahu al kol-am Y'hudah, in the fourth year of Yehoyakim ben Yoshiyahu, melekh Y'hudah (the same was the first year of Nevukhadretztzar, melekh Bavel),  2 which Yir'm'yahu na-navi spoke al-kol-am Y'hudah, and to all the inhabitants of Yerushalaim, saying:  3 "From the thirteenth year of Yoshiyahu ben Amon, melekh Y'hudah, v'ad ha-yom hazeh, these twenty-three years, d'var YHWH has come to me, and I have spoken to you, rising up early and speaking; but you have not listened.  4 YHWH has sent all his avadim ha-n'vi'im to you, rising up early and sending them, (but you have not listened, nor inclined your ear to hear),  5 saying, 'Everyone return now from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and remain al-ha-adamah that YHWH has given to you v'la-avoteikhem l'min-olam v'ad-olam6 and don't go after elohim acherim to serve them or bow down to them, and don't provoke me to anger with the work of your hands; and I will do you no harm.'  7 "Yet you have not listened to me," says YHWH, "that you may provoke me to anger with the work of your hands to your own hurt.

25:8 Therefore koh amar YHWH Tsva'ot: 'Because you have not heard my d'varim9 hinneh, I will send and take kol mishpachot of the north,' says YHWH, 'and (I will send) to Nevukhadretztzar melekh Bavel, my eved, and will bring them against ha-aretz hazot, and against the inhabitants of it, and against kol ha-goyim ha-eleh round about; and I will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, and a hissing, and perpetual desolations.  10 Moreover I will take from them qol sason v'qol simchah, qol chatan v'qol kalah, the voice of the mill v'or ner11 Kol ha-aretz hazot shall be a desolation, and an astonishment; and ha-goyim ha-eleh shall serve melekh Bavel seventy years.  12 'It shall happen, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish melekh Bavel v'goy ha-hu,' says YHWH, 'for their iniquity, v'al-eretz Kasdim; and I will make it desolate forever.  13 I will bring al-ha-aretz ha-hi all my d'varim which I have pronounced against it, even all that is written ba-sefer hazeh, which Yir'm'yahu has prophesied al-kol-ha-goyim14 For goyim rabim u'm'lakhim g'dolim shall make bondservants of them, even of them; and I will recompense them according to their deeds, and according to the work of their hands.'"

25:15 Ki koh amar YHWH, Elohei Yisra'el, to me: "Take this cup of ha-yayin of wrath at my hand, and cause kol ha-goyim, to whom I send you, to drink it.  16 They shall drink, and reel back and forth, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them."

25:17 Then I took the cup at the hand of YHWH, and made kol ha-goyim to drink, to whom YHWH had sent me:  18 Yerushalaim, and arei Y'hudah, and the malakhim of it, and the sarim of it, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, a hissing, and a curse, as it is ha-yom hazeh19 Par`oh, melekh Mitzrayim and his avadim, and his sarim, and all his people;  20 and all the mixed people, and kol malkhei eretz ha-`Utz, and kol malkhei eretz Pelishtim, and Ashk'lon, and `Aza, and `Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod21 Edom, and Mo'av, and b'nei `Ammon22 and kol malkhei Tzor, and kol malkhei Tzidon, and malkhei of the coastlands which are over ha-yam23 and D'dan, and Tema, and Buz, and all who cut off the corners (of their hair);  24 and kol malkhei `Arav, and kol malkhei of the mixed people who dwell ba-midbar25 and kol malkhei Zimri, and kol malkhei `Elam, and kol malkhei Madai26 and kol malkhei of the north, far and near, one with another; and kol ha-maml'khot ha-aretz asher al-p'nei ha-adamah, u'melekh Sheshakh shall drink after them.

25:27 "You shall tell them, 'Koh amar YHWH Tsva'ot, Elohei Yisra'el: "Drink you, and be drunken, and spew, and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you." '

25:28 "It shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at your hand to drink, then you shall tell them, 'Koh amar YHWH Tsva'ot: "You shall surely drink.  29 For hinneh, I begin to work evil at the city which is called by my name; and should you be utterly unpunished? You shall not be unpunished; for I will call for a sword on all the inhabitants of ha-aretz," says YHWH Tsva'ot.'

25:30 "Therefore prophesy against them kol ha-d'varim ha-eleh, and tell them,
'YHWH will roar mi-marom,
and utter his voice from his holy habitation;
he will mightily roar against his fold;
he will give a shout, as those who tread (the grapes),

32  Koh amar YHWH Tsva'ot,

for the days of your slaughter and of your dispersions are fully come,
and you shall fall like a goodly vessel.
35 "Refuge has perished from ha-ro'im,
and escape from the leaders of the flock.
36 "A voice of the cry of ha-ro'im,
and the wailing of the leaders of the flock!
for YHWH lays waste their pasture.
37 "The peaceable folds are brought to silence
because of the fierce anger of YHWH.
38 "He has left his den like the young lion;
for their land has become a waste
because of the fierceness of the oppressing (sword),
and because of his fierce anger."

CHAPTER 26

26:1 B'reishit maml'khut Yehoyakim ben Yoshiyahu, melekh Y'hudah came ha-davar hazeh from YHWH, saying,  2 "Koh amar YHWH: 'Stand in the courtyard of beit YHWH and speak to kol arei Y'hudah, which come to bow down in beit YHWH, kol ha-d'varim that I command you to speak to them; don't diminish a word.'  3 It may be they will listen, and every man turn from his evil way; that I may repent of the evil which I purpose to do to them because of the evil of their doings.  4 You shall tell them, 'Koh amar YHWH: "If you will not listen to me, to walk in my Torah, which I have set before you,  5 to listen al-divrei of my avadim ha-n'vi'im, whom I send to you, even rising up early and sending them, but you have not listened;  6 then I will make ha-bayit hazeh like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse l'kol goyei ha-aretz."'"

26:7 Ha-kohanim v'ha-n'vi'im v'khol ha`am heard Yir'm'yahu speaking ha-d'varim ha-eleh b'veit YHWH8 It happened, when Yir'm'yahu had made an end of speaking all that YHWH had commanded him to speak el-kol-ha`am, that ha-kohanim v'ha-n'vi'im v'khol ha`am laid hold on him, saying, "You shall surely die.  9 Why have you prophesied b'shem YHWH, saying, 'Ha-bayit shall be like Shiloh, v'ha`ir hazot shall be desolate, without inhabitant'?" Kol-ha`am were gathered to Yir'm'yahu b'veit YHWH.

26:10 When sarei Y'hudah heard ha-d'varim ha-eleh, they came up mi-beit ha-melekh beit YHWH; and they sat in the entry of the new gate of (beit) YHWH11 V'ha-kohanim v'ha-n'vi'im spoke el-ha-sarim v'el-kol-ha`am, saying, "Mishpat mavet la-ish hazeh, for he has prophesied against ha`ir hazot, as you have heard with your ears."

26:12 Vayomer Yir'm'yahu el-kol-ha-sarim v'el-kol-ha`am, saying, "YHWH sent me to prophesy el-ha-bayit hazeh v'el-ha`ir hazot et kol ha-d'varim that you have heard.  13 Now therefore amend your d'rakhot and your doings, and listen b'qol YHWH your Eloah; and YHWH will repent of the evil that he has pronounced against you.  14 But as for me, hinneh, I am in your hand.  Do with me as is good and right in your eyes.  15 Only know for certain that, if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood on yourselves v'el-hair hazot and on the inhabitants of it, for of a truth YHWH has sent me to you to speak kol ha-d'varim ha-eleh in your ears."

26:16 Vayomer ha-sarim v'khol ha`am el-ha-kohanim v'el ha-n'vi'im: "Ein la-ish hazeh mishpat mavet, for he has spoken to us b'shem YHWH Eloheinu."  17 Then rose up anashim mi'zqenim ha-aretz and spoke el-kol q'hal ha`am, saying,  18 "Mikhah ha-Morashti prophesied bi'mei Chizkiyahu melekh Y'hudah, vayomer el-kol-am Y'hudah, saying, 'Koh amar YHWH Tsva'ot:
'"Tziyon (as a) sadeh shall be plowed,
and Yerushalaim shall become heaps,
v'har ha-Bayit 6 as the high places of a forest."
19 'Did Chizkiyahu, melekh Y'hudah v'khol Y'hudah put him to death? Didn't he fear YHWH, and entreat the favor of YHWH, and YHWH repented of the evil which he had pronounced against them? Thus should we commit ra'ah g'dolah against our own nephesh.'"

26:20 There was also a man who prophesied b'shem YHWH, Uriyahu ben Sh'mayahu mi-Qiryat-ha-Ye'arim; and he prophesied al-ha`ir hazot v'al-ha-aretz hazot according to kol divrei Yirm yahu21 and when ha-melekh Yehoyakim, with all his mighty men and kol ha-sarim, heard his d'varim, ha-melekh sought to put him to death; but when Uriyahu heard it, he was afraid, and fled, and went into Mitzrayim22 and ha-melekh Yehoyakim sent anashim into Mitzrayim; Elnatan ben `Akhbor, and anashim with him, into Mitzrayim23 and they brought Uriyahu mi-Mitzrayim, and brought him to melekh Yehoyakim, who killed him with the sword, and cast his dead body into the graves of b'nei ha`am.

26:24 But yad Achiqam ben Shafan was with Yir'm'yahu, that they should not give him b'yad ha`am to put him to death.

CHAPTER 27

27:1 B'reishit maml'khut Tzedkiyahu ben Yoshiyahu, melekh Y'hudah came ha-davar hazeh el Yirm yah from YHWH, lemor2 Koh amar YHWH to me: "Make bonds and bars, and put them on your neck,  3 and send them el-melekh Edom v'el-melekh Mo'av v'el melekh b'nei `Ammon v'el-melekh Tzor v'el-melekh Tzidon, b'yad malakhim who come to Yerushalaim el-Tzidkiyahu, melekh Y'hudah4 and give them a charge el-adoneihem, saying, 'Koh amar YHWH Tsva'ot, Elohei Yisra'el, "Thus you shall tell adoneikhem5 "I have made ha-aretz and ha-adam and ha-b'hemah asher al-p'nei ha-aretz by my great power and by my outstretched arm, and I give it to whom it seems right to me.  6 Now have I given kol ha-aratzot ha-eleh b'yad Nevukhadnetztzar, melekh Bavel, my eved; and chayat ha-sadeh also I have given him to serve him.  7 Kol ha-goyim shall serve him and b'no and ben b'no until the time of his aretz comes, and then goyim rabim u'm'lakhim g'dolim shall make him their eved8 It shall happen, that ha-goy v'ha-maml'khah which will not serve the same Nevukhadnetztzar melekh Bavel, and that will not put their neck under the yoke of melekh Bavel, ha-goy ha-hu will I punish," says YHWH, "with the sword, and with the famine, and with the pestilence, until I have consumed them by his hand.  9 But as for you, don't listen to your n'vi'im or to your diviners or to your dreamers or to your soothsayers or to your sorcerers who speak to you, saying, 'You shall not serve melekh Bavel,'  10 for they prophesy a lie to you, to remove you far from your adamah, and that I should drive you out, and you should perish.  11 But ha-goy that shall bring their neck under the yoke of melekh Bavel and serve him, them will I let remain in their own adamah," says YHWH; "and they shall till it and dwell therein." '"

27:12 V'el-Tzidkiyah melekh Y'hudah I spoke according to kol d'varim ha-eleh, saying, "Bring your necks under the yoke of melekh Bavel and serve him and his people, and live.  13 Why will you die, you and your people, by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, as YHWH has spoken concerning ha-goy that will not serve melekh Bavel14 Don't listen to divrei ha-nevi'im who speak to you, saying, 'You shall not serve melekh Bavel,' for they prophesy a lie to you.  15 For I have not sent them," says YHWH, "but they prophesy falsely in my name, that I may drive you out, and that you may perish, you and ha-nevi'im who prophesy to you."

27:16 V'el ha-kohanim v'el kol ha`am hazeh, saying, "Koh amar YHWH: 'Don't listen el-divrei n'vi'eikhem who prophesy to you, saying, "Hinneh, the vessels of beit YHWH shall now shortly be brought again from Bavel," for they prophesy a lie to you.  17 Don't listen to them.  Serve melekh Bavel and live.  Why should this city become a desolation?  18 But if they are nevi'im, and if d'var YHWH is with them, let them now make intercession to YHWH Tsva'ot, that the vessels which are left b'veit YHWH u'veit melekh Y'hudah u'virushalam, not go to Bavel19 Ki koh amar YHWH Tsva'ot concerning the pillars, and concerning the sea, and concerning the bases, and concerning the residue of the vessels that are left ba`ir hazeh20 which Nevukhadnetztzar melekh Bavel didn't take when he carried away captive Yekhonyah ben Yehoyakim, melekh Y'hudah, mirushalam to Bavel, and all the nobles of Y'hudah virushalam21 yes, koh amar YHWH Tsva'ot, Elohei Yisra'el, concerning the vessels that are left in beit YHWH, u'veit melekh Y'hudah, virushalam22 'They shall be carried to Bavel, and there they shall be until the day that I visit them,' says YHWH. 'Then I will bring them up and restore them el ha-maqom hazeh.'"

1 1:3: Usually Yerushalayim but Yir'm'yahu says Yerushalaim. (Return)
2 3:4: or "if only you would call me" or "have you not just now called me" (Return)
3 8:7: chasidah (2624, fem of 2623: chasid: kind, pious): stork. (Return)
4 10:11: This verse was written in Aramaic. (Return)
5 22:24: "Coniah [Konyahu] is a derisive nickname for Jehoyakim's son Jeconiah (also known as Jehoiachin)." -- The Stone Edition Tanach, pg 1122.
"The word Coniah is, no doubt, in a mutilated form, instead of Jehoiachin.  The Prophet then calls him Coniah by way of contempt, as though he did not think him worthy of the complete name, but expresses it in two instead of four syllables.  So the Prophet, though Jeconiah was then the king, yet calls him Coniah." -- John Calvin, Commentaries on the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah and the Lamentations. (Return)
6 26:18: ha-har ha-bayit; "the hill of the House."  The Temple, the House of Elohim, is often referred to simply as "the House," ha-bayit. (Return)

* shalom (Strong's 7965), from shalam (7999), a primitive root meaning to be safe (in mind, body or estate) - completeness (in number), safety, soundness (in body), welfare, health, prosperity, peace, quiet, tranquility, contentment, friendship. "The principal meaning (of shalam) is completion and fulfillment.  It is the desirable state of wholeness in which relationships are restored.  Shalam can mean simple restitution or repayment, like a good business transaction.  It is an attitude of the heart in other cases.  True perfection can only be attributed to God.  He needs nothing from us and He is absolutely self-sufficient.  It is interesting that the stone for the original altar and Solomon's temple were uncut (shalem)." (Lexicon to the Old and New Testaments, in The Hebrew-Greek Key Study Bible, 1984, Spiros Zodhiates, Th.D., ed.)

** "I will be" - "e'h'yeh", as in "e'h'yeh asher e'h'yeh" (Ex. 3:14), "I shall be what I shall be." (RETURN)

Brief notes on Hebrew pronunciation:

Sources include the Hebrew-Aramaic Dictionary of the New American Exhaustive Concordance and Strong's Hebrew and Chaldee Dictionary.  Accented syllables are per The New Brown-Driver-Briggs-Gesenius Hebrew-English Lexicon and the dictation by Rabbi Kirzner on www.mechon-mamre.org.  Paragraphs are according to the NAS and/or RSV.  You are urged not to accept anything here at face value except the Word of YHWH.  It is YOUR responsibility to "study to show YOURSELF approved unto God, a workman who needs not to be ashamed," because YOU know how to rightly interpret the Word of Truth.
1.  Transliterations are done according to common usage, but common usage is not standardized and some variations will occur; e.g.:
c, k, or q for caf or kof - כ ק;
tz or ts for tzade/tsade/tsadi,, etc. - צ ץ.
Usually kh is used for khaf - כ ך - and ch for chet - ח
2.  Vowels are: ah, eh, ih, oh, oo.
3.  The accent in most Hebrew words is on the last syllable.  Herein differently accented syllables are underlined; e.g., Eloheinu.
4.  The definite article ha (the) is almost always a prefix and considered part of its subject, but I have usually hyphenated it.
5.  Many common prepositions, adverbs, conjunctions, etc. in English are often not used in Hebrew.  E.g., malakh Yahweh, literally "messenger Yahweh," should be interpreted "a messenger (or angel) of Yahweh."
6.  The Almighty's name in Hebrew is יהוה (right to left: yod, heh, vav, heh), usually transliterated YHWH or YHVH.  In ancient times, the vav is believed to have been pronounced as a "w": waw.  Many top scholars believe that the proper pronunciation (which cannot be proved beyond a doubt) was yah-WEH.  Here I have left it to the reader to decide the pronunciation by simply supplying "YHWH."  One thing is certain: It was NOT pronounced "Jehovah," because there is no "J" sound in Hebrew.  Also, the first syllable, Yah, is commonly used in the Hebrew of the Tanakh, such as in "hallelu-Yah" - ALWAYS as either two words or hyphenated - but also used independently about 23 times, at least twice appearing as "Yah Yahweh." (Is. 12:2; 26:4)
