PEREQ ‏א‎
CHAPTER 1

1:1 In the second year of Daryavesh ha-melekh, in the sixth month, b'yom echad la-chodesh, d'var YHWH came by Chaggai ha-navi, el-Z'rubbavel, ben-Sh'alti'el, governor of Y'hudah, v'el-Y'hoshu`a, ben Y'hotzadak, ha-kohen, lemor,  2 "Koh amar YHWH Ts'va'ot, lemor: Ha-am hazeh say, 'The time hasn't yet come, the time for beit YHWH to be built.' "  3 Va'y'hi d'var YHWH b'yad Chaggai, ha-navi, lemor,  4 "Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled batot, while ha-bayit hazeh lies waste?  5 Now therefore this is what YHWH Ts'va'ot says: Consider your ways.  6 You have sown much, and bring in little.  You eat, but you don't have enough.  You drink, but you aren't filled with drink.  You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm, and he who earns wages earns wages to put them into a bag with holes in it."

1:7 Koh amar YHWH Ts'va'ot: "Consider your d'rakhim.  8 Go up to ha-har, bring etz, and build ha-bayit.  I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified," amar YHWH.  9 "You looked for much, v'hinneh, it came to little; and when you brought it ha-bayit, I blew it away.  Why?" n'um YHWH Ts'va'ot.  "Because of my bayit that lies waste, while each of you is busy with his own bayit.  10 Therefore for your sake shamayim withholds the dew, v'ha-aretz withholds its fruit.  11 I called for a drought al-ha-aretz, on the mountains, on the grain, v'al-ha-tirosh, on that which ha-adamah produces, v'al-ha-adam, v'al-ha-b'hemah, and on all the labor of the hands."

1:12 Then Z'rubbavel, ben-Sh'alti'el, v'Y'hoshu`a, ben-Y'hotzadak, ha-kohen ha-gadol, with all the remnant of ha-am, hearkened b'qol YHWH Eloheihem, v'al-divrei Chaggai ha-navi, as YHWH Eloheihem had sent him; and the people feared mi-p'nei YHWH.  13 Vayomer Chaggai, mal'akh YHWH, spoke the message of YHWH la-am, lemor, "I am with you," n'um YHWH.  14 YHWH stirred up ruach Z'rubbavel, ben-Sh'alti'el, governor of Y'hudah, v'et-ruach Y'hoshu`a, ben-Y'hotzadak, ha-kohen ha-gadol, v'et-ruach of all the remnant of ha-am; and they came and worked b'veit-YHWH Ts'va'ot Eloheihem,  15 in the twenty-fourth day of the month, in the sixth month, in the second year of Daryavesh ha-melekh.

CHAPTER 2

2:1 In the seventh month, in the twenty-first day of the month, d'var YHWH b'yad Chaggai ha-navi, lemor,  2 "Speak now el-Z'rubbavel, ben-Sh'alti'el, governor of Y'hudah, v'el-Y'hoshu`a, ben-Y'hotzadak, ha-kohen ha-gadol, and to the remnant of ha-'am, lemor3 'Who is left among you who saw ha-bayit hazeh in its kavod ha-rishon?  How do you see it now?  Isn't it in your eyes as nothing?  4 V`attah chazak, Z'rubbavel,' n'um YHWH, v'chazak, Y'hoshu`a, ben-Y'hotzadak, ha-kohen ha-gadol, v'chazak kol-am ha-aretz, n'um YHWH, 'and work, for I am with you,' n'um YHWH Ts'va'ot.  5 This is ha-davar that I covenanted with you when you came mi-Mitzrayim, and my Ruach lived among you.  'Don't be afraid.'  6 Ki khoh amar YHWH Ts'va'ot: 'Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake ha-shamayim, v'et-ha-aretz, v'et-ha-yam, and the dry land;  7 and I will shake kol-ha-goyim.  The precious things of kol-ha-goyim will come, and I will fill ha-bayit hazeh (with) kavod, amar YHWH Ts'va'ot.  8 Mine is ha-kesef and mine is ha-zahav,' n'um YHWH Ts'va'ot.  9 'Greater is the kavod (of) ha-bayit hazeh than ha-rishon,' amar YHWH Ts'va'ot; 'u'va-maqom hazeh I will give shalom,' n'um YHWH Ts'va'ot."

2:10 In the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Daryavesh, d'var YHWH came by Chaggai ha-navi, lemor,  11 "Koh amar YHWH Ts'va'ot: Ask now ha-kohanim (concerning the) Torah, lemor,  12 'If someone carries basar kodesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his fold touches ha-lekhem, and the stew, v'el-ha-yayin v'el-shemen, or any food, will it become kadash?' "  Ha-kohanim answered vayomru, "Lo."  13 Vayomer Chaggai, "If one who is tameh by reason of a (dead) nefesh touch any of these, will it be tameh?"  Ha-kohanim answered vayomru, "It will be tameh."  14 Then Chaggai answered vayomer, " 'So is ha-`am hazeh, and so is ha-goy hazeh before me,' n'um YHWH; 'and so is every work of their hands.  That which they offer there is tameh.  15 Now, please consider min-ha-yom hazeh and backward, before even el-even was laid b'hekhal YHWH.  16 Through all that time, when one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were only ten.  When one came to the wine vat to draw out fifty, there were only twenty.  17 I struck you with blight, mildew, and hail in all the work of your hands; yet you didn't turn to me,' n'um YHWH.  18 'Consider, please, min-ha-yom hazeh and backward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, since the day that the foundation of hekhal YHWH was laid, consider it.  19 Is ha-zera yet in the barn?  Yes, ha-gefen, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and v'etz ha-zayit haven't produced.  From today I will bless you.' "

2:20 D'var YHWH came the second time to Chaggai in the twenty-fourth day of the month, saying,  21 "Speak el-Z'rubbavel, governor of Y'hudah, lemor, 'I will shake ha-shamayim v'et-ha-aretz.  22 I will overthrow kiseh mam'lakhut.  I will destroy the strength of mam'l'khot ha-goyim.  I will overthrow the chariots, and those who ride in them.  The horses and their riders will come down, every one by the sword of his brother.  23 Ba-yom ha-hu, n'um YHWH Ts'va'ot, I will take you, Z'rubbavel ben-Sh'altiel, my eved,' ,n'um YHWH, 'and will make you as a signet, for I have chosen you,' n'um YHWH Ts'va'ot."
