CHAPTER 1

1:1 Reishit B'sorat Yeshua ha-Mashiach, Ben Elohim.

1:2 Ka-katuv ba'n'vi'im,
"Hinneh, I send my malakh l'faneikha,
who will prepare the way before me."

'Ba-midbar make ready derekh YHWH!
Make his paths straight!'"

4 Yochanan came immersing ba-midbar and preaching the immersion of t'shuvah for forgiveness of ha-chata'im.  5 All the country of Y'hudah v'khol ha`am Yerushalayim went out to him.  They were immersed by him bi-n'har ha-Yarden, confessing their chata'im.  6 Yochanan was clothed with hair of g'malim and a leather belt around his loins.  He ate locusts and wild honey.  7 Va-yik'ra, lemor, "After me comes he who is mightier than I, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and loosen.  8 Anochi tavalti etkhem bamayim, v'hu yitbol etkhem ba-Ruach ha-Kodesh.

1:9 Va'y'hi b'yomam ha-hem, that Yeshua came mi-Natzeret asher ba-Galil, and was immersed by Yochanan ba-Yarden.  10 Immediately coming up min-ha-mayim, he saw ha-shamayim parting, and ha-Ruach descending on him ka-yonah.  11 Va'y'hi qol min-ha-shamayim, "Attah b'ni, my beloved, in whom I am well pleased."

1:12 Immediately ha-Ruach drove him out into ha-midbar.  13 He was there ba-midbar forty days tempted by ha-satan.[♦]  He was with the chayyot; v'ha-malakhim ministered to him.

1:14 Now after Yochanan was taken into custody, Yeshua came ba-Galil, preaching B'sorat Malkhut ha-Elohim, lemor,  15 "The time is fulfilled, and Malkhut ha-Elohim is at hand!  Repent, and believe ba-B'sorah."

1:16 Passing along by Yam ha-Galil, he saw Shim`on v'Andrai, achiv Shim`on, casting a net ba-yam, for they were fishermen.  17 Vayomer Yeshua to them, "Come after me, and I will make you into fishers for anashim."[C]18 Immediately they left their nets, and followed him.  19 Going on a little further from there, he saw Ya`akov ben-Zavdai, v'Yochanan, achiv, who were also in the boat mending the nets.  20 Immediately he called them, and they left their father, Zavdai, in the boat with the hired servants, and went after him.

1:21 They went el-K'far-Nachum, and immediately ba-Shabbat he entered into ha-qahal and taught.  22 They were astonished at his torah, for he taught them as having authority, and not as ha-Sofrim.  23 Va-ish hayah ba-qahal with ruach tumah, and he cried out,  24 saying, "Ahah!  What do we have to do with you, Yeshua, ha-Notzri?  Have you come to destroy us?  I know mi attah: the Kadosh (One of) Elohim!"  25 Yeshua rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!"  26 Ha-ruach ha-tumah, convulsing him and crying b'qol gadol, came out of him.  27 They were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "Mah-zot?  Mah hi, torah ha-chadashah?  For with authority he commands even ruchot ha-tumah, and they obey him!"  28 The report of him went out immediately everywhere into all the region of ha-Galil and its surrounding area.

1:29 Immediately, when they had come out of ha-qahal, they came into beit Shim`on v'Andrai, with Ya`akov v'Yochanan.  30 Now the mother of the wife of Shim`on lay sick with a fever, and immediately they told him about her.  31 He came and took her by the hand, and raised her up.  The fever left her, and she served them.

1:32 Va-`erev, when ha-shemesh had set, they brought to him all who were sick, and those who were possessed by shedim.  33 Kol ha`ir was gathered together at ha-petach.  34 He healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many shedim.  He didn't allow ha-shedim to speak, because they knew him.

1:35 Early ba-lailah, he rose up and went out, and departed into a desert place, and there prayed.  36 Shim`on and those who were with him followed after him;  37 and they found him, and told him, "Everyone is looking for you."  38 Vayomer to them, "Let's go elsewhere into the next towns, that I may preach there also, for to this end I came forth."  39 He went into their q'hillot b'kol ha-Galil, preaching and casting out shedim.

1:40 There came to him a m'tzora, begging him, kneeling down to him, and saying to him, "If you want to, you can make me tahor."  41 Being moved with compassion, he stretched forth his hand, and touched him, and said to him, "I want to.  Be tahor."  42 When he had said this, immediately ha-tsara`at departed from him, and he was made tahor.  43 He strictly charged him, and immediately sent him out,  44 vayomer to him, "See you say nothing to anybody, but go show yourself el-Kohen, and offer for your cleansing the things which Mosheh commanded, for an `edut to them."  45 But he went out, and began to proclaim it much, and to spread about ha-davar, so that Yeshua could no more openly enter into a city, but was outside in desert places: and they came to him from everywhere.

CHAPTER 2

2:1 When he entered again into K'far-Nachum after some days, it was heard that he was ba-bayit.  2 Immediately many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even around ha-petach; and he spoke ha-davar to them.  3 Four (people) came, carrying a paralytic to him.  4 When they could not come near to him for ha-hamon, they removed the roof where he was.  When they had broken it up, they let down the mat that the paralytic was lying on.  5 Yeshua, seeing their emunah, said to the paralytic, "B'ni, your chata'im are forgiven[♦] you."  6 But there were some of ha-Sofrim sitting there, and reasoning in their l'vavot,  7 "Why does this (man) speak giddufim like that?  Who can forgive sins but Elohim alone?"  8 Immediately Yeshua, perceiving in his ruach that they so reasoned within themselves, said to them, "Why do you reason these things in your l'vavot?  9 Which is easier, to tell the paralytic, 'Your chata'im are forgiven;' or to say, 'Arise, and take up your bed, and walk?'  10 But that you may know that Bar Enash[♦] has authority on eretz to forgive chata'im" -- he said to the paralytic --  11 "I tell you, arise, take up your mat, and go to your bayit."  12 He arose, and immediately took up the mat, and went out in front of them all; so that they were all amazed, and glorified Elohim, lemor, "We never saw anything like this!"

2:13 He went out again by the seaside.  Kol ha-hamon came to him, and he taught them.  14 As he passed by, he saw Levi ben Chalfai sitting at the place of toll, vayomer to him, "Follow acharai."  And he arose and followed him.

2:15 Va'y'hi that he was reclining in his bayit, and many tax collectors and chatta'im sat down with Yeshua and his talmidim, for there were many, and they followed him.  16 V'ha-Sofrim v'ha-P'rushim, when they saw that he was eating with ha-chatta'im and tax collectors, said to his talmidim, "Why is it that he eats and drinks with tax collectors and chatta'im?"  17 When Yeshua heard it, he said to them, "Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick.  I came not to call ha-tzaddikim, but chatta'im to repentance."

2:18 The talmidim (of) Yochanan v'ha-Perushim were fasting, and they came and asked him, "Why do the talmidei Yochanan v'talmidei ha-P'rushim fast, but your talmidim don't fast?"  19 Vayomer Yeshua to them, "Can the sons of the bride chamber fast while the bridegroom is with them?  As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they can't fast.  20 Yomim ba'im when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then will they fast ba-yomim ha-hem.  21 No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, or else the patch shrinks and the new tears away from the old, and a worse hole is made.  22 No one puts tirosh into old wineskins, or else ha-tirosh will burst the skins, and ha-yayin pours out, and the skins will be destroyed; but they put tirosh into fresh wineskins."[♦]

2:23 Va'y'hi that he was going ba-Shabbat through the grain fields, and his talmidim began, as they went, to pluck the ears of grain.  24 Ha-P'rushim said to him, "Hinneh, why do they do that which is not lawful ba-Shabbat?"  25 Vayomer to them, "Did you never read what David did, when he had need, and was hungry -- he, and they who were with him?  26 How he entered into Beit Elohim when Avyatar was Kohen Gadol, and ate lechem ha-panim, which it is not lawful to eat except for ha-Kohanim, and gave also to those who were with him?"[A]
27 Vayomer to them, "Ha-Shabbat came into being for man, not man for ha-Shabbat.  28 Therefore Bar Enash is adon even of ha-Shabbat."

CHAPTER 3

3:1 He entered again into ha-qahal, and there was a man there whose hand was withered.  2 They watched him, whether he would heal him ba-Shabbat, that they might accuse him.  3 Vayomer to the man whose hand was withered, "Rise up in the midst."  4 Vayomer to them, "Is it lawful ba-Shabbat to do good, or to do harm?  To save a nefesh, or to kill?"  But they were silent.  5 When he had looked around at them with anger, being grieved at the hardening of their l'vavot, he said to ha-ish, "Stretch out your hand."  He stretched it out, and his hand was restored as healthy as the other.  6 Ha-P'rushim went out, and immediately took counsel with anshei Hordos against him, how they might destroy him.

3:7 Yeshua withdrew `ad ha-yam with his talmidim, and a great crowd followed him min ha-Galil u'mi-'Y'hudah,[♦]8 u'mi-Yerushalayim u'me-Edom beyond ha-Yarden, and those from around Tzor v'Tzidon.  Hamon rav, hearing what great things he did, came to him.  9 He spoke to his talmidim that a little boat should stay near him because of ha-hamon, so that they wouldn't press on him.  10 For he had healed many, so that as many as had diseases pressed on him that they might touch him.  11 Ha-ruchot ha-t'me'ot, whenever they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, "Attah hu Ben-Elohim!"  12 He sternly warned them that they should not make him known.

3:13 He went up el-ha-har, and called to himself whom he wanted, and they went to him.  14 He appointed twelve, that they might be with him, and that he might send them out to preach,  15 and to have authority to heal sicknesses and to cast out shedim:  16 And he called Shim`on b'shem Kefa;  17 Ya`akov ben-Zavdai v'et Yochanan achi Ya`akov, and them he surnamed B'nei-Regesh, which means Sons of Thunder;  18 Andrai; Pilippos; Bar-Talmai; Mattai; Toma; Ya`akov ben-Chalfai; Taddai; Shim`on the Zealot;[♦]19 v'Y'hudah Ish-Kriyot, who also betrayed him.  20 He came into a bayit.  Again a hamon came together, so that they could not so much as eat lechem.  21 When his friends heard it, they went out to seize him: for they said, "He is insane" [or "he is beside himself"].  22 Ha-Sofrim who came down from Yerushalayim said, "He has Ba`al-Z'vul," and, "By sar shedim he casts out ha-shedim."  23 He summoned them, and said to them in moshalim, "How can ha-satan cast out ha-satan?  24 If a mamlakhah is divided against itself, that mamlakhah cannot stand.  25 If a bayit is divided against itself, bayit ha-hu cannot stand.  26 If ha-satan has risen up against himself, and is divided, he can't stand, but has an end.  27 But no one can enter into beit ha-gibbor to plunder his goods unless he first binds ha-gibbor; and then he will plunder his bayit.

3:28 Amen.  I tell you, all their chatta'im will be forgiven to b'nei adam, and their giddufim with which they may blaspheme;  29 but whoever may blaspheme against Ruach ha-Kodesh has no forgiveness l`olam, but is liable to mishpat l`olam,"  30 -- because they said, "He has a ruach tumah."

3:31 Imo v'echav came, and standing outside, they sent to him, calling him.  32 A hamon was sitting around him, and they told him, "Hinneh, imkha v'acheikha are outside looking for you."  33 He answered vayomer to them, "Who are imi v'echai?"  34 Looking around at those who sat around him in a circle, he said, "Hinneh, imi v'echai!  35 For whoever may do the will of Elohim, hu achai va-achoti v'imi."

CHAPTER 4

4:1 Again he began to teach by the seaside.  A hamon rav was gathered to him, so that he entered into a boat ba-yam, and sat down.  Kol ha-hamon were on the land `al-ha-yam.  2 He taught them many things bi'm'shalim, and told them in his teaching,  3 "Listen!  Hinneh, a sower went forth to sow,

4:4 Va'y'hi, as he sowed, some (seed) fell by ha-derekh, and the birds came and devoured it.  5 Others fell on the rocky places, where it had not much aretz, and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of eretz.  6 When ha-shemesh had risen, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.  7 Others fell among the thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit.  8 Others fell `al-ha-aretz ha-tovah, and yielded fruit, growing up and increasing.  Some brought forth thirty times, some sixty times, and some one hundred times as much."  9 He said, "Whoever has ears to hear,[A] let him hear."

4:10 When he was alone, those who were around him with the twelve asked him about ha-mashal.  11 Vayomer to them, "To you is given to know sod Malkhut ha-Elohim,[B] but to those who are outside, all things are done bi'm'shalim,  12 that 'seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest perhaps they should turn again, and their chatta'im should be forgiven them.'"[C]13 Vayomer to them, "Don't you understand ha-mashal hazeh?  How will you understand kol ha-m'shalim?  14 The farmer sows ha-davar.  15 These are the ones `al-yad ha-derekh, where ha-davar is sown; and when they have heard, immediately ha-satan comes, and takes away ha-davar which has been sown in their l'vavot.  16 These in like manner are those who are sown on the rocky places, who, when they have heard ha-davar, immediately receive it b'simchah.  17 They have no root in themselves, but endure for a while, then, when oppression or persecution arises because of ha-davar, immediately they stumble.  18 Others are those who are sown among ha-kotzim.  These are those who have heard ha-davar,  19 and the cares of ha`olam hazeh, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in choke ha-davar, and it becomes unfruitful.  20 These are those who were sown `al-ha-aretz ha-tovah: such as hear ha-davar, and accept it, and bear fruit, some thirty times, some sixty times, and some one hundred times."

4:21 Vayomer to them, "Is the lamp brought to be put under a basket or under a bed?  Isn't it put on a menorah?  22 For there is nothing hidden, except that it should be made known; neither was anything made secret, but that it should come to light.  23 If any man has ears to hear, let him hear."  24 He said to them, "Take heed what you hear.  With whatever measure you measure, it will be measured to you, and more will be given to you who hear.  25 For whoever has, to him will more be given, and he who doesn't have, from him will be taken away even that which he has."

4:26 He said, "So is Malkhut ha-Elohim, as if a man should cast zera `al-ha-aretz,  27 and should sleep and rise lailah va-yom, v'ha-zera should spring up and grow, he doesn't know how.  28 Ki ha-aretz bears fruit: first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.  29 But when the fruit is ripe, immediately he puts forth the sickle, because ha-qatzir has come."

4:30 He said, "To what shall we liken Malkhut ha-Elohim?  Or by what mashal will we compare it?  31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown ba-aretz, though it is less than kol ha-z'ro`im asher al-ha-aretz,  32 yet when it is sown, grows up, and becomes greater than all the herbs, and puts out great branches, so that the birds of ha-shamayim can lodge under its shadow."

4:33 With m'shalam rabbim he spoke ha-davar to them, as they were able to hear it.  34 Without a mashal he didn't speak to them; but privately to his own talmidim he explained all things.

4:35 Ba-yom ha-hu, when `erev had come, he said to them, "Let's go over to the other side."  36 Leaving ha-hamon, they took him with them, even as he was, in the boat.  Other small boats were also with him.  37 There arose a great wind storm, and the waves beat into the boat, so much that the boat was already filled.  38 He himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion, and they woke him up, and told him, "Moreh, don't you care that we are dying?"  39 He awoke, and rebuked the wind, vayomer el-ha-yam, "Silence!  Be still!"  The wind ceased, and there was a great calm.  40 Vayomer to them, "Why are you so afraid?  How is it that you have no emunah?"  41 They were greatly afraid, and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even the wind and ha-yam obey him?"

CHAPTER 5

5:1 They came to the other side of ha-yam, into the country of ha-Geraziyyim.  2 When he had come out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with a ruach tumah,  3 who had his dwelling in the tombs.  Nobody could bind him any more, not even with chains,  4 because he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him, and the fetters broken in pieces.  Nobody had the strength to tame him.  5 Always, lailah va-yomam, in the tombs v'he-harim, he was crying out, and cutting himself with stones.  6 When he saw Yeshua from afar, he ran and bowed down to him,  7 and crying out b'qol gadol, he said, "What have I to do with you, Yeshua, ben El `Elyon?  I adjure you by Elohim, don't torment me."  8 For he said to him, "Come out of ha-adam, ruach tumah!"  9 He asked him, "Mah sh'mekha?"  Vayomer to him, "R'vavah sh'mi, ki-rabim anachnu."  10 He begged him much that he would not send them away out of the country.  11 Now there was on the mountainside a great herd of chazirim feeding.  12 Kol ha-shedim begged him, lemor, "Send us into ha-chazirim, that we may enter into them."  13 At once Yeshua gave them permission.  Ha-ruchot ha-tumah came out and entered into ha-chazirim.  The herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank el-ha-yam, and they were drowned ba-yam.

5:14 Those who fed ha-chazirim fled, and told it ba`ir u'va-sadeh.  They came to see what it was that had happened.  15 They came to Yeshua, and saw him who was possessed by shedim sitting, clothed, and in his right mind, even him who had r'vavah; and they were afraid.  16 Those who saw it declared to them how it happened to him who was possessed by shedim, and about ha-chazirim.  17 They began to beg him to depart from their borders.  18 As he was entering into the boat, he who had been possessed by shedim begged him that he might be with him.  19 He didn't allow him, but said to him, "Go to your bayit and to those (who are) yours, and tell them how Adonai has done great things for you, and how he had mercy on you."  20 He departed and began to proclaim in Dekapolis [Ten Cities] how Yeshua had done great things for him, and everyone marveled.

5:21 When Yeshua had crossed back over in the boat to the other side, a hamon rav was gathered to him; and he was `al-ha-yam.  22 Hinneh, echad me-roshei ha-qahal, u'sh'mo Ya`ir, came; and seeing him, he fell at his feet,  23 and begged him much, saying, "Biti ha-q'tanah is at the point of death.  Please come and lay your hands on her, that she may be made healthy, and live."  24 He went with him, and a hamon rav followed him, and they pressed upon him on all sides.  25 A certain ishshah, who had an issue of blood for twelve shanah,  26 and had suffered many things by many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better, but rather grew worse,  27 having heard the things concerning Yesuha, came up behind him ba-hamon, and touched his clothes.  28 For she said, "If I just touch his clothes,[♦] I will be saved."[♦]29 Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt bi-b'sarah that she was healed of her plague.  30 Immediately Yeshua, perceiving in himself that the power had gone forth from him, turned around ba-hamon vayomer, "Who touched my clothes?"  31 His talmidim said to him, "You see ha-hamon pressing against you, and you say, 'Who touched me?'"  32 He looked around to see her who had done this thing.  33 But ha-ishshah, fearing and trembling, knowing what had been done to her, came and fell down before him, and told him kol ha-emet.  34 Vayomer to her, "Biti, emunatekh has saved you.  Go l'shalom, and be restored from your affliction."

5:35 While he was still speaking, they came mi-rosh ha-qahal, lemor, "Your daughter is dead.  Why bother ha-Moreh any more?"  36 But Yeshua, hearing ha-davar spoken, immediately said to rosh ha-qahal, "Don't be afraid, only believe."  37 He allowed no one to follow him, except Kefa u'l'Ya`akov u'l'Yochanan achai Ya`akov.  38 Va-yavo el-beit rosh ha-qahal, and he saw an uproar, weeping, and great wailing.  39 When he had entered in, he said to them, "Why do you make an uproar and weep?  The child is not dead, but is asleep."  40 They laughed him to scorn.  But he, having put them all out, took the father of the child and her mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was lying.  41 Taking the child by the hand, he said to her, "Talitha, koumi;" which means, being interpreted, "Young lady, get up."  42 Immediately the young lady rose up, and walked, for she was twelve years old.  They were amazed with great amazement.  43 He charged them much that no one should know this, and commanded that something should be given to her to eat.

CHAPTER 6

6:1 He went out from there.  He came into his own country, and his talmidim followed him.  2 When ha-Shabbat had come, he began to teach ba-qahal, and many hearing him were astonished, saying, "Where did this (man) get these (things)?" and, "What is ha-chokhmah that is given to him, that such mighty works come about by his hands?  3 Isn't this the carpenter, ben-Miryam va-achai Ya`akov v'Yosi v'Y'hudah v'Shim`on?  Aren't his achayyot here with us?"  They were offended by him.  4 Vayomer Yeshua to them, "A navi is not dishonored except in his own country, and among his own relatives, and in his own bayit."  5 He could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick folk, and healed them.  6 He marveled because of their unbelief.  He went around ha-k'farim teaching.

6:7 He called to himself the twelve, and began to send them out sh'nayim sh'nayim; and he gave them authority over ruchot ha-tumah.  8 He charged them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a staff only: no lechem, no wallet, no n'choshet in their purse,  9 but to wear sandals, and not put on two tunics.  10 He said to them, "Wherever you enter into a bayit, stay there until you depart from there.  11 Whoever will not receive you nor hear you, as you depart from there, shake off the dust that is under your feet for a testimony against them.  Amen.  I tell you, it will be more tolerable l'S'dom v'l`Amorah b'yom ha-din than for that city!"  12 They went out and preached that (people) should repent.  13 They cast out many shedim and anointed many with shemen who were sick, and healed them.

6:14 Ha-melekh Hordos heard this, for his name had become known, vayomer , "Yochanan ha-matbil has risen min-ha-metim, and therefore these powers work in him."  15 But others said, "Eliyahu hu."  Others said, "Ha-Navi hu, or like one of ha-n'vi'im."  16 But Hordos, when he heard this, said, "This is Yochanan, whom I beheaded.  He has risen min-ha-metim."  17 For Hordos himself had sent out and arrested Yochanan, and bound him in prison for the sake of Horodyah, ishshah of his brother Pilippos, for he had married her.  18 For Yochanan had said to Hordos, "It is not lawful for you to have ha-ishshah of your brother."  19 Horodyah set herself against him, and desired to kill him, but she couldn't,  20 for Hordos feared Yochanan, knowing that hu ish tzaddik v'kadosh, and kept him safe.  When he heard him, he did many things, and he heard him gladly.  21 When a convenient day had come, that Hordos on his birthday made a supper for his great men, and the high captains, and the roshei ha-Galil;  22 and when bat-Horodyah herself came in and danced, she pleased Hordos and those reclining with him.  Vayomer ha-melekh to the young lady, "Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you."  23 He swore to her, "Whatever you shall ask of me, I will give you, up to half of my malkhut."  24 She went out, vatomer to her mother, "What shall I ask?"  Vatomer, "Rosh Yochanan ha-matbil."  25 She came in immediately with haste ha-melekh, and asked, "I want you to give me right now on a platter rosh Yochanan ha-matbil."  26 Ha-melekh was exceedingly sorry, but for the sake of his oaths, and of his dinner guests, he didn't wish to refuse her.  27 Immediately ha-melekh sent forth a soldier of his guard, and commanded to bring rosh Yochanan, and he went and beheaded him in the prison,  28 and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the young lady; and the young lady gave it to her mother.  29 When his talmidim heard this, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.

6:30 Ha-sh'lechim gathered themselves together to Yeshua, and they told him all things, whatever they had done, and whatever they had taught.  31 Vayomer to them, "You come apart into a lonely place, and rest awhile."  For there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.  32 They went away in the boat to a lonely place by themselves.  33 They saw them going, and many recognized him and ran there on foot from all the cities.  They arrived before them and came together to him.  34 Yeshua came out, saw a hamon rav, and he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a ro`eh, and he began to teach them many things.  35 When it was late in the day, his talmidim came to him, and said, "This place is lonely, and it is late in the day.  36 Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and k'farim, and buy themselves lekhem, for they have nothing to eat."  37 But he answered them, "You give them something to eat."  They asked him, "Shall we go and buy two hundred dinar worth of lekhem, and give them something to eat?"  38 Vayomer to them, "How many loaves do you have?  Go see."  When they knew, they said, "Five, and two dagim."  39 He commanded them that all should sit down by companies on the green grass.  40 They sat down in ranks, by hundreds and by fifties.  41 He took the five loaves and the two dagim, and looking up to ha-shamayim, he blessed,[♦] and he broke the loaves, and he gave to his talmidim to set before them, and he divided the two dagim among them all.  42 They all ate, and were filled.  43 They took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and also of ha-dagim.  44 Those who ate the loaves were five thousand ish.

6:45 Immediately he made his talmidim enter into the boat, and to go ahead to the other side, to Beit-Tzaidah, while he himself sent ha-hamon away.  46 After he had taken leave of them, he departed into ha-har to pray.  47 Va'y'hi `erev, and the boat was in the midst of ha-yam, and he was alone on the land.  48 Seeing them distressed in rowing, for the wind was contrary to them; and about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking `al-ha-yam, and he would have passed by them,  49 but they, when they saw him walking `al-ha-yam, supposed that it was a mareh ruach,[♦] and cried out;  50 for they all saw him, and were troubled.  But he immediately spoke with them, and said to them, "Chizku!  Ani hu![♦]  Don't be afraid."  51 He went up to them into the boat; and the wind ceased, and they were very amazed among themselves, and marveled;  52 for they hadn't understood about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.

6:53 When they had crossed over, they came to land at Ginnesar [Kinneret], and moored to the shore.  54 When they had come out of the boat, immediately they recognized him,  55 and ran around that whole region, and began to carry around those who were sick, on their mats, to where they heard he was.  56 Wherever he entered, into k'farim, or into cities, v'al-ha-sadot, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged him that they might touch just the tzitzit of his garment;[♦(1)] and as many as touched him were made well.[♦(2)]

7:1 Then ha-P'rushim, and some of ha-Sofrim gathered together to him, having come from Yerushalayim.  2 Now when they saw some of his talmidim eating lechem with defiled, that is, unwashed, hands, they found fault.  3 (Ki ha-P'rushim v'khol ha-Y'hudim don't eat unless they wash their hands and forearms, holding to kabbalat ha-Z'qenim.[♦]4 They don't eat when they come from the marketplace, unless they bathe themselves, and there are many other things, which they have received to hold to: washings of cups, pitchers, bronze vessels, and couches.)  5 Ha-P'rushim v'ha-Sofrim asked him, "Why don't your talmidim walk according to kabbalat ha-Z'qenim, but eat lechem with unwashed hands?"  6 He answered vayomer to them, "Well did Yesha`yahu prophesy of you alamim, ka-katuv, 'Ha`am hazeh honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.7 But in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines mitzvot anashim.'[A]8 "For you set aside mitzvot Elohim, and hold tightly to kabbalat anashim -- the washing of pitchers and cups, and you do many other such things."

7:9 Vayomer to them, "Full well do you reject mitzvat ha-Elohim, that you may keep your kabbalah.  10 For Mosheh said, 'Honor your father and your mother;' and, 'He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.'[B]11 But you say, 'If a man will tell his father or his mother, "Whatever you might have been profited by me is qorban, that is to say a gift (given to Elohim);"'  12 and you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or his mother,[♦]13 making void d'var ha-Elohim by your kabbalah, which you have handed down.  You do many things like this."

7:14 Vayikra el-kol ha-hamon to himself, vayomer to them, "Hear me, all of you, and understand.  15 There is nothing from outside la-adam, that going into him can defile him; but the things which proceed out of him are those that defile ha-adam.  16 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!"  17 When he had entered into ha-bayit min ha-hamon, his talmidim asked him about ha-mashal.  18 Vayomer to them, "Are you so without understanding also?  Don't you perceive that whatever goes into ha-adam from outside can't defile him,  19 because it doesn't go into his heart, but into his belly, and into the latrine, (thus making all foods clean[♦])?"  20 He said, "That which proceeds out of ha-adam, that defiles ha-adam.  21 For from within, out of lev ha-adam, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, sexual sins, murders, thefts,  22 covetings, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, `ayin ha-ra,[♦] gidduf, pride, and foolishness.  23 Kol ha-ra`ot ha-eleh proceed from within, and defile ha-adam."

7:24 From there he arose, and went away into the borders of Tzor v'Tzidon.  He entered into a bayit, and wanted no one to know it, but he couldn't escape detection.  25 For an ishshah, whose bat k'tanah had a ruach tameh, having heard of him, came and fell down at his feet.  26 Now ha-ishshah Y'vanit, a Syrophoenician by birth, begged him that he would cast ha-shed out of her daughter.  27 But Yeshua said to her, "Let the children[♦] be filled first, for it is not appropriate to take the children's lechem and throw it to the dogs."  28 But she answered vatomer to him, "Ken, Adoni.  For even the dogs under ha-shulchan eat the crumbs of ha-y'ladim."  29 Vayomer to her, "Because of this davar, go.  Ha-shed has gone out of your daughter."  30 She went away to her bayit and found her daughter lying on the bed, with ha-shed gone out.

7:31 Again he departed from the borders of Tzor v'Tzidon, and came to yam ha-Galil, through the midst of the borders of Decapolis.  32 They brought to him one who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech.  They begged him to lay his hand on him.  33 He took him aside from ha-hamon, privately, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat, and touched his tongue.  34 Looking up into ha-shamayim, he sighed, and said to him, "Ippatach!" that is, "Be opened!"  35 Immediately his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke clearly.  36 He charged them that they should tell no one, but the more he charged them, so much the more widely they proclaimed it.  37 They were astonished beyond measure, saying, "He has done all things well.  He makes even the deaf hear, and the mute speak!"[C]

8:1 Va'y'hi ba-yamim ha-hem, when there was a hamon rav, and they had nothing to eat, Yeshua called his talmidim to himself vayomer to them,  2 "I have compassion on ha-hamon, because they continue with me now shloshet yamim, and have nothing to eat.  3 If I send them away fasting to their bayit, they will faint on the way, for some of them have come a long way."  4 His talmidim answered him, "From where will one be able to fill these (men) with lechem here ba-midbar?"  5 He asked them, "How many kikkrot do you have?"  They said, "Sheva."  6 He commanded ha-hamon to recline la-aretz, and he took the sheva kikkrot.  Having given thanks, he broke them, and gave them to his talmidim to serve, and they served ha-hamon.  7 They had a few dagim k'tanim.  Having blessed, he said to serve these also.  8 They ate, and were filled.  They took up shiv`ah baskets of broken pieces that were left over.  9 Those who had eaten were about four thousand.  Then he sent them away.  10 Immediately he entered into the boat with his talmidim, and came into the region of Dalmanoutha.

8:11 Ha-P'rushim came out and began to argue with him, seeking an ot min-ha-shamayim from him, and tempting him.  12 He sighed deeply in his ruach vayomer, "Why does this generation seek a sign?  Amen.  I tell you, there will no sign be given la-dor hazeh."  13 He left them, and again entering into the boat, departed to the other side.

8:14 They forgot to take lechem; and they didn't have more than one kikkar in the boat with them.  15 He charged them, saying, "Take heed: beware s'or ha-P'rushim u'mi-s'or Hordos."  16 They reasoned with one another, saying, "It's because we have no lechem."  17 Yeshua, perceiving it, said to them, "Why do you reason that it's because you have no lechem?  Don't you perceive yet, neither understand?  Is your heart still hardened?  18 Having eyes, don't you see?  Having ears, don't you hear?  Don't you remember?  19 When I broke the five kikkrot among the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?"  They told him, "Twelve."  20 "When the shiv`at (kikkrot) fed the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?"  They told him, "Shevah."  21 He asked them, "Don't you understand, yet?"

8:22 He came to Beit-Tzaidah.  They brought a blind man to him, and begged him to touch him.  23 He took hold of the blind man by the hand, and brought him out of ha-k'far.  When he had spit on his eyes, and laid his hands on him, he asked him if he saw anything.  24 He looked up, and said, "I see anashim; for I see them like trees walking."  25 Then again he laid his hands on his eyes.  He looked intently, and was restored, and saw everyone clearly.  26 He sent him away to his bayit, lemor, "Don't enter into ha-k'far, nor tell anyone ba-k'far."

8:27 Yeshua went forth, with his talmidim, el-k'farei Kaisareia Philippoi.  On the way he asked his talmidim, "Who do anashim say that I am?"  28 They told him, "Yochanan ha-matbil, and others: Eliyahu, but others: echad min-ha-n'vi'im."  29 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"  Kefa answered, "Attah hu ha-Mashiach."  30 He charged them that they should tell no one about him.

8:31 He began to teach them that Bar Enash[♦] must suffer many things, and be rejected by ha-Z'qenim v'Roshei ha-Kohanim v'ha-Sofrim, and be killed, and after shloshet yamim rise again.  32 He spoke to them openly.  Kefa took him, and began to rebuke him.  33 But he, turning around, and seeing his talmidim, rebuked Kefa, and said, "Get behind me, satan![♦]  For you have in mind not the things of Elohim, but the things of men."

8:34 He called ha-hamon to himself with his talmidim, and said to them, "Whoever wants to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his execution stake, and follow me.  35 For whoever wants to save his nefesh will lose it; and whoever will lose his nefesh for my sake and ha-B'sorah will save it.  36 For what does it profit ben-adam, to gain kol ha`olam, and forfeit his nefesh?  37 For what should ben adam give in exchange for his nefesh?  38 For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my d'varim in this adulterous and sinful generation, Bar Enash also will be ashamed of him, when he comes in the kavod of his Father with ha-malakhim ha-k'doshim."

CHAPTER 9

9:1 Vayomer to them, "Amen.  I tell you, there are some standing here who will in no way taste death, until they see Malkhut ha-Elohim come with power."

9:2 After six days Yeshua took with him Kefa v'Ya`akov v'Yochanan, and brought them up onto a high mountain privately by themselves, and he was transformed in front of them.  3 His clothing became glistening, exceedingly white, like snow, such as no launderer ba-aretz can whiten them.  4 Eliyahu u'Mosheh appeared to them, and they were talking with Yeshua.  5 Kefa answered Yeshua, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here.  Let's make three sukkot: one for you, one for Mosheh, and one for Eliyahu."  6 For he didn't know what to say, for they were very afraid.  7 A cloud came, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, "Zeh b'ni y'didi.  Listen to him."  8 Suddenly, looking around, they saw no one with them any more, except Yeshua only.

9:9 As they were coming down min-ha-har, he charged them that they should tell no one what things they had seen, until Bar Enash had risen again min-ha-metim.  10 They kept the saying, questioning among themselves what the rising again min-ha-metim should mean.  11 They asked him, saying, "Why do ha-Sofrim say that Eliyahu must come first?"[A]12 He said to them, "Eliyahu indeed comes first, and restores all things.  How is it written about Bar Enash, that he should suffer many things and be despised?  13 But I tell you that Eliyahu has come, and they have also done to him whatever they wanted to, even as it is written about him."[B]

9:14 Coming to ha-talmidim, he saw a hamon rav around them, and ha-Sofrim questioning them.  15 Immediately kol ha-hamon, when they saw him, were greatly amazed, and running to him greeted him.  16 He asked ha-Sofrim, "What are you asking them?"  17 Echad min ha-hamon answered, "Moreh, I brought to you my son, who has a mute ruach;  18 and wherever it seizes him, it dashes him down, and he foams at the mouth, and grinds his teeth, and wastes away.  I asked your talmidim to cast it out, and they weren't able."  19 He answered him, "Unbelieving generation, how long will I be with you?  How long will I bear with you?  Bring him to me."  20 They brought him to him, and when he saw him, immediately ha-ruach convulsed him, and he fell on ha-aretz, wallowing and foaming at the mouth.  21 He asked his father, "How long has it been since this has come to him?"  He said, "From childhood.  22 Often it has cast him into gam ba-esh gam ba-mayim, to destroy him.  But if you can do anything, have compassion on us, and help us."  23 Yeshua said to him, "If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes."  24 Immediately the father of the child cried out with tears, "Ani ma'amin, Adoni.  Help my unbelief!"  25 When Yeshua saw that a hamon came running together, he rebuked ha-ruach ha-tameh, saying to him, "You mute and deaf ruach, I command you, come out of him, and enter no more into him!"  26 Having cried out, and convulsed greatly, it came out of him.  The boy became like one dead; so much that most of them said, "He is dead."  27 But Yeshua took him by the hand, and raised him up; and he arose.  28 When he had come into ha-bayit, his talmidim asked him privately, "Why couldn't we cast it out?"  29 Vayomer to them, "This kind can come out by nothing, except by t'fillah and fasting."

9:30 They went forth from there, and passed through ha-Galil.  He didn't want anyone to know it,  31 for he taught his talmidim, vayomer to them, "Bar Enash is delivered up bi'y'dei b'nei adam, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, ba-yom ha-shlishi he will rise again."  32 But they didn't understand the statement and were afraid to ask him.

9:33 He came to K'far-Nachum, and when he was ba-bayit he asked them, "What were you arguing among yourselves on the way?"  34 But they were silent, for they had disputed one with another on the way about who was the greatest.  35 He sat down, and called the twelve; and he said to them, "If any man wants to be first, he shall be last of all, and `eved of all."  36 He took a yeled, and set him in the midst of them.  Taking him in his arms, he said to them,  37 "Whoever receives yeled echad such as this in my name, receives me, and whoever receives me, doesn't receive me, but him who sent me."

9:38 Yochanan answered vayomer to him, "Moreh, we saw someone who doesn't follow us casting out shedim in your name; and we forbade him, because he doesn't follow us."  39 Vayomer Yeshua, "Don't forbid him, for there is no one who will do a mighty work in my name, and be able quickly to speak evil of me.  40 For whoever is not against us is on our side.  41 For whoever will give you a kos mayim to drink in my name, because you are (a follower) of ha-Mashiach, amen, I tell you, he will in no way lose his reward.

9:42 Whoever will cause echad ha-k'tanim who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast ba-yam.  43 If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off.  It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having your two hands to go into Gei Hinnom, into the unquenchable fire,  44 'where their worm doesn't die, and ha-esh is not quenched.'[C]45 If your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off.  It is better for you to enter into life lame, rather than having your two feet to be cast into Gei Hinnom el-ha-esh that will never be quenched --  46 'where their worm doesn't die, and ha-esh is not quenched.'  47 If your eye causes you to stumble, cast it out.  It is better for you to enter into Malkhut ha-Elohim with `ayin achat, rather than having two eyes to be cast into ha-esh Gei Hinnom,  48 'where their worm doesn't die, and ha-esh is not quenched.'  49 For everyone will be salted with ha-esh, and kol korban will be seasoned with melakh.  50 Tov ha-melakh, but if ha-melakh has lost its saltiness, with what will you season it?  Have salt in yourselves, and be at shalom with one another."

10:1 He arose from there and came into the borders of Y'hudah and beyond ha-Yarden.  A hamon came together to him again.  As his custom was, he taught them again.

10:2 P'rushim came to him testing him, and asked him, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his ishshah?"  3 He answered vayomer, "What did Mosheh command you?"  4 They said, "Mosheh allowed a certificate of divorce to be written, and to divorce her."[A]5 Yeshua answered vayomer to them, "For your hardness of heart, he wrote you ha-mitzvah hazot.  6 But me-reishit ha-b'riah, 'God made them male and female.[B]7 For this cause will an ish leave his father and mother, and will join to his ishshah,8 and the two will become basar echad,'[C] so that they are no longer two, but basar echad.  9 What therefore Elohim has yoked together, let no man separate."

10:10 Ba-bayit, his talmidim asked him again about the same (matter).  11 Vayomer to them, "Whoever divorces his ishshah, and marries another, commits adultery against her.  12 If an ishshah divorces ishah, and marries another, she commits adultery."[♦]

10:13 They were bringing to him y'ladim, that he should touch them, but ha-talmidim rebuked those who were bringing them.  14 But when Yeshua saw it, he was moved with indignation, vayomer to them, "Allow ha-y'ladim to come to me!  Don't forbid them, for to such belong Malkhut ha-Elohim.  15 Amen.  I tell you, whoever will not receive Malkhut ha-Elohim ka-yeled, he will in no way enter therein."  16 He took them in his arms, and blessed them, laying his hands on them.

10:17 As he was going forth la-derekh, one ran to him, kneeled to him, and asked him, "Moreh ha-Tov, what shall I do that I may inherit chayyei `olam?"  18 Vayomer Yeshua to him, "Why do you call me tov?  No one is good except one -- ha-Elohim.  19 You know ha-mitzvot:

10:23 Yeshua looked around, vayomer to his talmidim, "How difficult it is for those who have riches to enter el-Malkhut ha-Elohim!"  24 Ha-talmidim were amazed at his d'varim.  But Yeshua answered again vayomer, "Y'ladim, how hard is it for those who trust in riches to enter el-Malkhut ha-Elohim!  25 It is easier for a gamal to go through a needle's eye than for a rich man to enter el-Malkhut ha-Elohim."  26 They were exceedingly astonished, saying to him, "Then who can be saved?"  27 Yeshua looked at them vayomer, "With b'nei adam it is impossible, but not with Elohim, for all things are possible with Elohim."  28 Kefa began to tell him, "Hinneh, we have left all, and have followed you."  29 Vayomer Yeshua, "Amen.  I tell you, there is no one who has left bayit o achim o achayyot o av o em o ishshah o y'ladim o s'dot, for my sake, and for the sake of ha-B'sorah,  30 but he will receive one hundred times now in this time batim v'achim v'achayyot v'imot v'y'ladim v'sadot, u'va`olam ha-ba chayyei `olamim.  31 But many who are first will be last; and the last first."

10:32 They were ba-derekh, going up to Yerushalayim; and Yeshua was going in front of them, and they were amazed; and those who followed were afraid.  He again took the twelve, and began to tell them the things that were going to happen to him.  33 "Hinneh, we are going up to Yerushalayim.  Bar Enash will be delivered l'Roshei ha-Kohanim u'la-Sofrim.  They will condemn him to death, and will deliver him la-goyim.  34 They will mock him, spit on him, scourge him, and kill him.  U'va'yom ha-shlishi he will rise again."

10:35 Ya`akov v'Yochanan, b'nei Zavdai, came near to him, saying, "Moreh, we want you to do for us whatever we will ask."  36 Vayomer to them, "What do you want me to do for you?"  37 They said to him, "Grant to us that we may sit, one at your right hand, and one at your left hand, in your kavod."  38 Vayomer Yeshua to them, "You don't know what you ask.  Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and to be immersed with the immersion that I am immersed with?"  39 They said to him, "We are able."  Vayomer Yeshua to them, "You shall indeed drink the cup that I drink, and you shall be immersed with the immersion that I am immersed with;  40 but to sit at my right hand and at my left hand is not mine to give, but for whom it has been prepared."  41 When the ten heard it, they began to be moved with indignation towards Ya`akov v'Yochanan.  42 Yeshua summoned them, vayomer to them, "You know that they who are recognized as rulers over ha-goyim hold dominion over them, and their g'dolim exercise authority over them.  43 But it shall not be so among you, but whoever wants to become gadol among you shall be your `eved.  44 Whoever of you wants to become rosh among you, shall be `eved la-kol.  45 Ki Bar Enash also came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his nefesh as a kofer[♦] for many."

11:1 When they drew near to Yerushalayim el-Beit-Pagei u'Veit-Ani b'Har ha-Zetim, he sent two of his talmidim,  2 vayomer to them, "Go your way el-ha-k'far that is opposite you.  Immediately as you enter into it, you will find an `ayir tied, on which no one has sat.  Untie him, and bring him.  3 If anyone asks you, 'Why are you doing this?' say, 'Ha-Adon needs him;' and immediately he will send him back here."  4 They went away, and found an `ayir tied at the door outside in the open street, and they untied him.  5 Some of those who stood there asked them, "What are you doing, untying ha-`ayir?"  6 They said to them just as Yeshua had said, and they let them go.  7 They brought ha-`ayir to Yeshua, and threw their garments on him, and Yeshua sat on him.  8 Many spread their garments on the way, and others were cutting down branches from the trees, and spreading them `al-ha-derekh.  9 Those who went in front, and those who followed, cried, "Hoshi`ah na!  Baruch ha-ba b'shem YHWH![A][♦]10 B'rukhah Malkhut David avinu ha-ba'a b'shem YHWH!  Hoshi`ah na by the Highest!"[♦]

11:11 Va-yavo Yeshua Yerushalayim v'el-Beit ha-Mikdash.  When he had looked around at everything, it being now evening, he went out to Beit-Ani with the twelve.

11:12 The next day, when they had come out from Beit-Ani, he was hungry.  13 Seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came to see if perhaps he might find anything on it.  When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs.  14 And answering vayomer Yeshua, "May no one ever eat fruit from you again!" and his talmidim heard it.

11:15 They came to Yerushalayim, and Yeshua entered el-ha-Mikdash, and began to throw out those who sold and those who bought ba-Mikdash, and overthrew ha-shulchanim of the money-changers, and the seats of those who sold ha-yonim.  16 He would not allow anyone to carry a container through ha-Mikdash.  17 And he taught vayomer to them, "Isn't it written, 'My bayit will be called a beit t'fillah for kol ha`amim?'[B]  But you have made it a den of robbers!"[C]18 Ha-Sofrim v'Roshei ha-Kohanim heard it, and sought how they might destroy him.  For they feared him, for kol ha-hamon was astonished at his teaching.  19 When `erev came, he went forth out of ha`ir.

11:20 As they passed by ba-boqer, they saw the fig tree withered away from the roots.  21 Kefa, remembering, said to him, "Rabbi, look!  The fig tree which you cursed has withered away."  22 Yeshua answered vayomer to them, "Have emunat Elohim.  23 For amen, I tell you, whoever may tell ha-har hazeh, 'Be taken up and cast el-ha-yam,' and doesn't doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says happens; he shall have whatever he says.  24 Therefore I tell you, all things whatever you pray and ask for, believe that you receive them, and you shall have them.  25 Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father she'ba-shamayim may also forgive you your transgressions.  26 But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father she'ba-shamayim forgive your transgressions."

11:27 They came again to Y'rushalayim, and as he was walking ba-Mikdash, ha-Kohanim ha-G'dolim v'ha-Sofrim v'ha-Z'qenim came to him,  28 and they began saying to him, "By what authority do you do these things?  Or who gave you this authority to do these things?"  29 Vayomer Yeshua to them, "I will ask you one question.  Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.  30 The immersion of Yochanan -- was it min-ha-shamayim or mi-b'nei adam?  Answer me."  31 They reasoned with themselves, saying, "If we should say, 'Min-ha-shamayim,' he will say, 'Why then did you not believe him?'  32 If we should say, 'Mi-b'nei adam'"--they feared ha`am, for all held Yochanan to really be a navi.  33 They answered Yeshua, "We don't know."  Yeshua answered vayomer to them, "Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things."

12:1 He began to speak to them in moshalim.  "A man planted a kerem, set a hedge around it, dug a pit for the winepress, built a migdal, rented it out to a farmer, and went into another country.  2 When it was time, he sent an `eved to the farmer to get from the farmer his share of the fruit of ha-kerem.  3 They took him, beat him, and sent him away empty.  4 Again, he sent another `eved to them; and they threw stones at him, wounded him ba-rosh, and sent him away shamefully treated.  5 Again he sent another; and they killed him; and many others, beating some, and killing some.  6 Therefore he had yet one, a beloved son, he sent him last to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'  7 But those farmers said among themselves, 'This is the heir.  Come, let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'  8 They took him, killed him, and cast him forth out of ha-kerem.  9 What therefore will ba`al ha-kerem do?  He will come and destroy the farmers, and will give ha-kerem to others.  10 Haven't you even read ha-Katuv hazeh: 'The stone which the builders rejected, the same was made l'rosh pinnah.11 This was from YHWH; it is marvelous in our eyes'?"[A]

12:12 They tried to seize him, but they feared ha-hamon; for they perceived that he spoke ha-mashal against them.  They left him, and went away.

12:13 They sent some of ha-P'rushim v'anshei Hordos to him, that they might catch him bi'davar.  14 When they had come, they asked him, "Moreh, we know that you are honest, and don't defer to anyone; for you aren't partial to anyone, but truly teach derekh Elohim.  Is it lawful to pay taxes el-Kaisar, or not?  15 Shall we give, or shall we not give?"  But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, "Why do you test me?  Bring me a dinar, that I may see it."  16 They brought it, vayomer to them, "Whose is this tselem and inscription?"  They said to him, "Keisar's."  17 Yeshua answered vayomer to them, "Render to Kaisar the things of Kaisar, and to Elohim the things of Elohim."  They marveled greatly at him.

12:18 There came to him Tzaddukim, who say that there is no t'chiyah.  They asked him, saying,  19 "Moreh, Mosheh wrote to us, 'If achi-ish dies, and leaves an ishshah behind him, and leaves no y'ladim, that his ach should take his ishshah, and raise up zera for his ach.'[B]20 There were shiv`ah achim.  Ha-rishon took an ishshah, and dying left no zera.  21 Ha-sheni took her, and died, leaving no zera behind him.  Gam ha-shlishi;  22 and kol ha-shiv`ah took her and left no zera.  Last of all ha-ishshah also died.  23 Bi-t'chiyah, when they rise, whose ishshah will she be of them?  For ha-shiv`ah had her la-ishshah."

12:24 Yeshua answered vayomer to them, "Isn't this because you are mistaken, not knowing ha-K'tuvim, nor the power of Elohim?  25 For when they rise min ha-metim, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are like malakhei ha-Shamayim.  26 But about ha-metim, that they are raised; haven't you read b'sefer Mosheh, at the Bush, how Elohim spoke to him, saying, 'Anokhi Elohei Avraham v'Elohei Yitzchak v'Elohei Ya`akov'?[C]27 He is not Elohei ha-metim, ki im-Elohei ha-chayyim.  You are therefore badly mistaken."

12:28 V'echad min-ha-Sofrim came, and hearing them questioning together, knowing that he had answered them well, asked him, "Mah-hi rishonah l'khol ha-mitzvot?"  29 Yeshua answered, "Ha-rishonah l'chol ha-mitzvot hi,
'Sh'ma, Yisra'el, YHWH Eloheinu YHWH echad
:  30 V'ahavta et-YHWH Eloheikha b'khol l'vav'kha u'v'khol naf'sh'kha u'v'khol-mada'akha u'v'khol-m'o'dekha.  Zot hi ha-mitzvah ha-rishonah.

32 Vayomer ha-Sofer to him, "(You say) well, Moreh.  By truth you have said that Elohim is one, and there is none other besides him,  33 and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, with all the nefesh, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is more than kol olot and sacrifices."  34 Yeshua saw that he answered wisely, vayomer to him, "You are not far from malkhut ha-Elohim."  No one dared ask him any question after that.

12:35 Yeshua responded, as he taught ba-Mikdash, "How is it that ha-Sofrim say that ha-Mashiach hu ben-David?  36 V'hu David amar b'Ruach ha-Kodesh, N'um YHWH l'Adoni, Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies the footstool of your feet.'[F]37 Therefore David himself calls him Adon, so how can he be his ben?"  Ha-hamon rav heard him gladly.

12:38 Vayomer to them in his teaching, "Beware of ha-Sofrim, who desire to walk in robes, and to get greetings in the marketplaces,  39 and chief seats in ha-q'hillot, and chief places at feasts:  40 those who devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long t'fillot.  These will receive greater mishpat."

12:41 Yeshua sat down opposite the treasury, and saw how ha-hamon cast n'choset into the treasury.  Many who were rich cast in much.  42 A poor widow came, and she cast in two lepta, which make a quadrans.  43 He called his talmidim to himself, vayomer to them, "Amen.  I tell you, this poor widow gave more than all those who are giving into the treasury,  44 for they all gave out of their abundance, but she, out of her poverty, gave all that she had to live on."

13:1 As he went forth out of ha-Mikdash, one of his talmidim said to him, "Moreh, see what kind of stones and what kind of buildings!"  2 Yeshua said to him, "Do you see these great buildings?  There will not be left here one stone on another, which will not be thrown down."

13:3 As he sat `al-Har-ha-Zetim opposite ha-Mikdash, Kefa v'Ya`akov v'Yochanan v'Andrai asked him privately,  4 "Tell us, when will these things be?  What is the sign that these things are all about to be accomplished?"  5 Yeshua, answering, began to tell them, "Be careful that no one leads you astray.  6 For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he!'[♦] and will lead many astray.  7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, don't be troubled, for those must happen, but the end is not yet.  8 For there will rise goy `al-goy u'mam'lakhah `al-mam'lakhah.  There will be earthquakes in various places.  There will be famines and troubles.  These things are the beginning of birth pains.

13:9 "But watch yourselves, for they will deliver you up to sodim.  You will be beaten in q'hillot.  Before governors and m'lakhim you will stand for my sake, for an `edut to them.  10 Ha-b'sorah must first be preached l'khol-ha-goyim.  11 When they lead you away and deliver you up, don't be anxious beforehand, or premeditate what you will say, but say whatever will be given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but im-Ruach ha-Kodesh.  12 Brother will deliver up brother la-mavet, and the father his yeled.  Y'ladim will rise up against parents, and cause them to be put to death.  13 You will be hated by kol adam for my name's sake, but the one enduring to the end will be saved.

13:14 "But when you see the abomination of desolation,[A] spoken of by Daniyel ha-navi, standing where it ought not (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Y'hudah flee to he-harim,  15 and let him who is on the housetop not go down, nor enter in, to take anything out of his bayit.  16 Let him who is ba-sadeh not return back to take his cloak.  17 But woe to those who are with child and to those who nurse babies ba-yamim ha-hemah!  18 Pray that your flight won't be in the winter.  19 Ki ba-yamim hahem there will be oppression, such as there has not been the like me-reishit ha-b'riah asher bara Elohim until now, and never will be.  20 Unless YHWH had shortened ha-yamim, no basar would have been saved; but for the elect's sake, whom he chose, he shortened ha-yamim.  21 Then if anyone tells you, 'Look, here is ha-Mashiach!' or, 'Look, there!' don't believe it.  22 For there will arise false m'shichim and false n'vi'im, and will show otot u'moftim, that they may lead astray, if possible, also the elect.  23 But you watch.  Hinneh, me-rosh I have told you all things.

13:24 "But ba-yamim ha-hem, after that oppression, ha-shemesh will be darkened, the moon will not give her light,[B]25 ha-kokhavim will be falling min-ha-shamayim, and the powers of ha-shamayim will be shaken.  26 Then they will see Bar Enash coming in clouds with great power and kavod.[C]27 Then he will send forth his malakhim, and will gather together his elect from the four winds, from the ends of ha-aretz to the ends of ha-shamayim.

13:28 "Now from the fig tree, learn this mashal.  When the branch has now become tender, and puts forth its leaves, you know that the summer is near;  29 even so you also, when you see these things coming to pass, know that it is near, ba-patach.  30 Amen.  I say to you, ha-dor hazeh will not pass away until kol eleh are accomplished.  31 Ha-shamayim v'ha-aretz will pass away, but my d'varim will not pass away.

13:32 "But of ha-yom ha-hu or that hour no one knows, gam-lo malakhei ha-shamayim gam-lo ha-Ben, but only ha-Av.  33 Watch, keep alert, and pray; for you don't know when the time is.  34 It is like a man going abroad, having left his bayit, and giving authority to his avadim, and to each one his work, and also commanded the doorkeeper to keep watch.  35 Watch therefore, for you don't know when ba`al ha-bayit is coming, whether ba-`erev, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, o ba-boqer;  36 lest coming suddenly he might find you sleeping.  37 What I tell you, I tell all: Watch."

14:1 It was now two days before Chag ha-Pesach[♦] and (Chag ha-)Matzot, and Roshei ha-Kohanim v'ha-Sofrim sought how they might sieze him by deception, and kill him.  2 For they said, "Not during ha-chag, because there might be an uproar of ha-am."

14:3 While he was at Beit-Ani, b'veit Shim`on ha-m'tzorah, as he reclined (at the table), an ishshah came having an alabaster jar of shemen of pure nerd -- very costly.  She broke the jar, and poured it over his head.  4 But there were some who had indignation among themselves, saying, "Why has this shemen been wasted?  5 For this might have been sold for more than three hundred denarii, and given to the poor." They grumbled against her.  6 But Yeshua said, "Leave her alone.  Why do you trouble her?  She has done a ma`aseh tov for me.  7 For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want to, you can do them good; but you will not always have me.  8 She has done what she could.  She has anointed my body beforehand for the burying.  9 Amen.  I tell you, wherever this B'sorah may be preached throughout kol ha-aretz, that also which this (woman) has done will be spoken of for a memorial of her."

14:10 Y'hudah Ish-Kriyot, who was one of the twelve, went away el-Roshei ha-Kohanim, that he might deliver him to them.  11 They, when they heard it, were glad, and promised to give him kesef.  He sought how he might conveniently deliver him.

14:12 Ba-rishon ha-Matzot, when they sacrificed ha-Pesach, his talmidim asked him, "Where do you want us to go and make ready that you may eat ha-Pesach?"  13 He sent two of his talmidim, and said to them, "Go into the city, and there you will meet a man carrying a pitcher of mayim.  Follow him,  14 and wherever he enters in, tell ba`al ha-bayit, 'Ha-moreh says, "Where is the guest room, where I may eat ha-Pesach with my talmidim?"'  15 He will himself show you a large upper room furnished and ready.  Make ready for us there."  16 His talmidim went out, and came into the city, and found things as he had said to them, and they prepared ha-Pesach.

14:17 Va'y'hi ba-arev he came with the twelve.  18 As they reclined and were eating, Yeshua said, "Amen.  I tell you, one of you will betray me[A] -- he who eats with me."  19 They began to be sorrowful, and to ask him one by one, "Surely not I?"  And another said, "Surely not I?"  20 He answered them, "It is one of the twelve, he who dips with me in the dish.  21 Ki Bar Enash[♦] goes, even as it is written about him, but woe to that man through whom Bar Enash is betrayed!  It would be better for that man if he had not been born."

14:22 As they were eating, Yeshua took lechem, and when he had blessed, he broke it, and gave to them, and said, "Take, eat.  Zeh hu gufi."  23 He took ha-kos, and when he had given thanks, he gave to them.  They all drank of it.  24 Vayomer to them, "This is my blood of ha-b'rit ha-chadashah, which is poured out for many.  25 Amen.  I tell you, I will no more drink mi-p'ri ha-gefen until that day when I drink it chadash b'Malkhut ha-Elohim."

14:26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out el-Har ha-Zetim.  27 Vayomer Yeshua to them, "All of you will be made to stumble because of me ba-lailah hazeh, ki-khatuv, 'I will strike ha-ro`eh, and the sheep will be scattered.'[B]28 However, after I am raised up, I will go before you into ha-Galil."  29 But Kefa said to him, "Although all will be offended, yet I will not."  30 VayomerYeshua to him, "Amen.  I tell you, that you, ha-yom, ba-lailah hazeh, before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times."  31 But he spoke all the more, "If I must die with you, I will not deny you."  Likewise, they all said so.

14:32 They came to a place which was named Gat-Sh'manei, vayomer to his talmidim, "Sit here, while I pray."  33 He took with him Kefa v'Ya`akov v'Yochanan, and began to be greatly alarmed and distressed.  34 Vayomer to them, "My nefesh is exceedingly sorrowful, even `ad-mavet.  Stay here, and watch."  35 He went forward a little, and fell on ha-aretz, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass away from him.  36 Vayomer, "Abba, Avi, all things are possible to you.  Please remove ha-kos hazot from me.  However, not what I desire, but what you desire."  37 He came and found them sleeping, vayomer el-Kefa, "Shim`on, are you sleeping?  Couldn't you watch one hour?  38 Watch and pray, that you not enter into temptation.  Ha-ruach indeed is willing, but ha-basar is weak."  39 Again he went away, and prayed, saying the same davar.  40 Again he returned, and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they didn't know what to answer him.  41 He came the third time, vayomer to them, "Sleep on now, and take your rest.  It is enough.  The hour has come.  Hinneh, Bar Enash is betrayed into the hands of chatta'im.  42 Arise, let us be going.  Behold, he who betrays me is at hand."

14:43 Immediately, while he was still speaking, Y'hudah, one of the twelve, came -- and with him a hamon with swords and clubs, from roshei ha-Kohanim v'ha-Sofrim v'ha-Z'qenim.  44 Now he who betrayed him had given them a sign, saying, "Whoever I will kiss, that is he.  Seize him, and lead him away safely."  45 When he had come, immediately he came to him, and said, "Rabbi!  Rabbi!" and kissed him.  46 They laid their hands on him, and seized him.  47 But a certain one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck `eved ha-Kohen ha-Gadol, and cut off his ear.  48 Yeshua answered them, "Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to seize me?  49 I was with you ba-Mikdash yom yom teaching, and you didn't arrest me.  But this is so that ha-K'tuvim might be fulfilled."  50 They all left him, and fled.

14:51 A certain young man followed with him, having a linen cloth thrown around him, over his naked body.  The young men grabbed him,  52 but he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.

14:53 They led Yeshua away el-ha-Kohen ha-Gadol.  Kol roshei ha-Kohanim v'ha-Z'qenim v'ha-Sofrim came together with him.  54 Kefa had followed him afar off, until he came into the court of ha-Kohen ha-Gadol.  He was sitting with the officers, and warming himself in the light of the fire.  55 V'roshei ha-Kohanim v'khol ha-sod sought witnesses against Yeshua to put him to death, and found none.  56 For many gave false testimony against him, and their testimony didn't agree with each other.  57 Some stood up, and gave false testimony against him, saying,  58 "We heard him say, 'I will destroy ha-hekhal hazeh that is made with hands, and in shloshet yamim I will build another made without hands.'"  59 Even so, their testimony did not agree.  60 Ha-Kohen ha-Gadol stood up in the midst, and asked Yeshua, "Have you no answer?  What is it which these testify against you?"  61 But he stayed quiet, and answered nothing.  Again ha-Kohen ha-Gadol questioned vayomer to him, "Attah hu ha-Mashiach, ben ha-M'vorakh?"  62 Vayomer Yeshua, "Ani hu.[♦]  You will see Bar Enash sitting at the right hand of ha-G'vurah,[C] and coming with the clouds of ha-shamayim."[D]63 Ha-Kohen ha-Gadol tore his clothes,[♦] vayomer, "What further need have we of `edim?  64 You have heard ha-gidduf!  What do you think?"  They all condemned him to be worthy of death.  65 Some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to beat him with fists, and to tell him, "Prophesy!"  The officers struck him with the palms of their hands.[E]

14:66 As Kefa was beneath in the court, one of the maids of ha-Kohen ha-Gadol came,  67 and seeing Kefa warming himself, she looked at him, vatomer, "You were also with ha-Notzri, Yeshua!"  68 But he denied it, saying, "I neither know, nor understand what you are saying."  He went out into the porch, and the cock crowed.  69 The maid saw him, and began again to tell those who stood by, "This is one of them."  70 But he again denied it.  After a little while again those who stood by said to Kefa, "You truly are one of them, for you are from ha-Galil, and your speech shows it."  71 But he began to curse, and to swear, "I don't know ha-ish hazeh of whom you speak!"  72 The cock crowed the second time.  Kefa remembered the saying, how that Yeshua said to him, "Before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times."  When he thought about that, he wept.

15:1 Immediately ba-boker, roshei ha-Kohanim with ha-Z'qenim v'ha-Sofrim v'khol ha-Sod, held a consultation, and bound Yeshua, and carried him away,[A] and delivered him up to Pilatos.  2 Pilatos asked him, "Are you melekh ha-Y'hudim?"  He answered, "You say (it)."  3 Roshei ha-Kohanim accused him of many things, but he answered nothing.[B]4 Pilate again asked him, "Have you no answer?  See how many things they testify against you!"  5 But Yeshua made no further answer, so Pilatos marveled.

15:6 Now at the feast he used to release to them one prisoner, whom they asked of him.  7 There was one called Bar-Abba, bound with those who had made insurrection, men who in the insurrection had committed murder.  8 Ha-hamon, crying aloud, began to ask him to do as he always did for them.[♦]9 Pilatos answered them vayomer, "Do you desire that I release to you melekh ha-Y'hudim?"  10 For he perceived that roshei ha-Kohanim had delivered him up through envy.  11 But roshei ha-Kohanim stirred up ha-hamon, that he should release Bar-Abba to them instead.  12 Pilatos again asked them, "What then should I do to him whom you call melekh ha-Y'hudim?"  13 They cried out again, "Hang him on the stake!"  14 Pilatos said to them, "Why, what evil has he done?"  But they cried out exceedingly, "Hang him on the stake!"  15 Pilatos, wishing to please ha-hamon, released Bar-Abba to them, and delivered Yeshua, when he had flogged him,[C] to be hung on the stake.[♦]

15:16 The soldiers led him away within the court, which is the Praitōrion; and they called together the whole cohort.  17 They clothed him with purple, and weaving a crown of thorns, they put it on him.  18 They began to salute him, "Gili,[♦] Melekh ha-Y'hudim!"  19 They struck his head with a reed, and spat on him, and bowing their knees, did homage to him.[D]20 When they had mocked him, they took the purple off of him, and put his own garments on him.  They led him out to hang him on the stake.

15:21 They compelled one passing by, coming min ha-sadeh, Shim`on ha-Kurini, avi Alexandros v'Roufos, to go with them, that he might bear his stake.  22 They brought him to the place called Gulgolta, which is, being interpreted, "The place of a skull."  23 They offered him yayin mixed with mor to drink, but he didn't take it.  24 Hanging him on the stake, they parted his garments among them, casting lots on them,[E] what each should take.  25 It was the third hour, and they hung him on the stake.[F]26 The superscription of his accusation was written over him, "MELEKH HA-Y'HUDIM."  27 With him they hung two robbers; one on his right hand, and one on his left.  28 Ha-K'tuv was fulfilled, which says, "He was numbered with transgressors."[G]29 Those who passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads, and saying, "Ha! You who destroy ha-Mikdash, and build it in three days,  30 save yourself, and come down from the stake!"  31 Likewise, also Roshei ha-Kohanim mocking among themselves with ha-Sofrim said, "He saved others.  He can't save himself.  32 Let ha-Mashiach, Melekh Yisra'el, now come down from the stake, that we may see and believe him."  Those who were hung on stakes with him reproached him.

15:33 When the sixth hour had come, there was darkness `al-kol ha-aretz until the ninth hour.  34 At the ninth hour Yeshua cried with a qol gadol, lemor, "Elōhi, Elōhi, lama sabackhthani?" [Ara.] which is, being interpreted, "Eli, Eli, why have you forsaken me?"[H]35 Some of those who stood by, when they heard it, said, "Hinneh, he calls Eliyahu."  36 One ran, and filling a sponge full of chometz, put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink,[I] saying, "Let him be.  Let's see whether Eliyahu comes to take him down."  37 Yeshua cried out with a qol gadol, and expired.  38 Parochet ha-Mishkan was torn in two from the top to the bottom.  39 When the centurion, who stood by opposite him, saw that he cried out like this and breathed his last, he said, "Truly ha-ish hazeh hayah ben-ha-Elohim!"

15:40 There were also nashim watching from afar, among whom were both Miryam ha-Magdalit,[♦] and Miryam imo shel-Ya`akov the less and of Yose u'Sh'lomit;  41 who, when he was ba-Galil, followed him, and served him; and many other nashim who came up with him to Y'rushalayim.

15:42 When `erev had now come, because it was the Preparation, that is, `erev Shabbat,  43 Yosef min ha-Ramatayim, a member of the council of honorable estate, who also himself was looking for Malkhut ha-Elohim, came.  He boldly went in to Pilatos, and asked for gufat Yeshua.  44 Pilatos marveled if he were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had been dead for a while.  45 When he learned it from the centurion, he granted ha-guf l'Yosef.  46 He bought a linen cloth, and taking him down, wound him in the linen cloth, and laid him in a tomb which had been cut out of a rock.  He rolled a stone `al-petach of the tomb.  47 Miryam ha-Magdalit u'Miryam em Yose, saw where he was laid.

CHAPTER 16

16:1 When ha-Shabbat was past, Miryam ha-Magdalit u'Miryam em Ya`akov u'Sh'lomit, bought spices, that they might come and anoint him.[♦]2 U'v'echad ba-shabbat very early ,[♦] they came to the tomb when ha-shemesh had risen.  3 They were saying among themselves, "Who will roll away the stone me-al petach of the tomb for us?"  4 for it was very big.  Looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back.  5 Entering into the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were amazed.  6 He said to them, "Don't be amazed.  You seek Yeshua ha-Notzri, who was killed on the stake.  He has risen.  He is not here.[A]Hinneh, ha-maqom where they laid him!  7 But go, tell his talmidim u'l'Kefa, 'He goes before you into ha-Galil.  There you will see him, as he said to you.'"  8 They went out, and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had come on them.  They said nothing to anyone; for they were afraid.

16:9 Now when he had risen early ba-echad ba-shabbat,[♦] he appeared first to Miryam ha-Magdalit, from whom he had cast out shiv`ah shedim.  10 She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept.  11 When they heard that he was alive, and had been seen by her, they disbelieved.

16:12 After these things he was revealed in another form to two of them, as they walked, on their way into the country.  13 They went away and told it to the rest.  They didn't believe them, either.

16:14 Afterward he was revealed to the eleven themselves as they sat `al-ha-shulchan, and he rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they didn't believe those who had seen him after he had risen.  15 Vayomer to them, "Go into kol ha-aretz, and preach ha-B'sorah l'khol-ha-b'riah.  16 He who believes and is immersed will be saved; but he who disbelieves will be condemned.  17 V'eleh ha-otot will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out shedim; they will speak with new languages;  18 they will take up n'chashim; and if they drink any deadly thing, it will in no way hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."

16:19 So then ha-Adon Yeshua, after he had spoken to them, was received up into ha-shamayim, and sat down at the right hand of Elohim.[B]20 They went forth, and preached everywhere, ha-Adon working with them, and confirming ha-davar ba-otot that followed.  Amein.

15:1-15:  I see no proof that the "multitude" shouting at Pilatos for the release of Bar-Abba instead of Yeshua was the common people rather than the Chief Priests, Scribes, Elders, and Sanhedrin.  This group would have constituted well over 100 men, certainly worthy of being called a "multitude."  Yeshua's "trial" was a political move by this group who were afraid of losing control, which the Romans allowed them to have over the people (John 11:48).

15:40:  The earliest mention of Miryam ha-Magdalit is in Lukas 8:2.
16:1:  This verse shows definitively that the death of Yeshua could not have been on Friday.
1) He was killed on the 4th day of the week ("Wednesday"), the preparation day before a high Sabbath (John 19:31) and he had to be taken off the stake and buried before sunset (ibid.).  (Did you ever wonder why the two criminals' legs needed to be broken? See THIS for an explanation of the physiology of crucifixion.)
2) The women rested on the first day of the seven-day Feast of Unleavened Bread, a high Sabbath (on "Thursday" that year) which began with the Passover meal the evening before ("Wednesday" after sunset). (Lev. 23:7).
3) They bought and prepared the spices on the sixth day of the week ("Friday") (Markos 16:1; Lukas 23:56), no small job for over 100 pounds of spices.
4) They rested on the weekly Sabbath (Lukas 23:56, "Saturday"), and very early on "the first (day) of the week" ("Sunday") when the sun had risen (Markos 16:2), they went to the tomb and found it empty.  We're not told, but he probably rose shortly after sunset on "Saturday" evening, which is when the first day of the week began.
5) This is the proof that Yeshua's words about "the sign of the prophet Jonah," three days and three NIGHTS in the heart of the earth, were a sign of his Messiahship.  "Friday" evening to sunrise on "Sunday" in no way constitutes "three days and three nights."
