PEREQ ‏א‎
CHAPTER 1

1:1 Divrei `Amos, who was among the herdsmen mi-T'ko`a, which he saw `al-Yisra'el bi'y'mei `Uzziyyah melekh Y'hudah, u'vi'y'mei Y'rav`am ben-Yo'ash melekh Yisra'el, two years before the earthquake.  2 Vayomar:
"YHWH mi-Tziyyon will roar,
u'm'Y'rushalaim will utter his voice;
and the pastures of ha-ro`im will mourn,
and rosh ha-Karmel will wither."

1:3 Koh amar YHWH:
"For three transgressions of Dammeseq,
yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment;
because they have threshed ha-Gil`ad
with threshing instruments of iron;
4 but I will send esh b'veit Chaza'el,
and it will devour the palaces of Ben-Hadad.
5 I will break the bar of Dammeseq,
and cut off the inhabitant mi-Biq`at-aven,
and him who holds the scepter mi-beit Eden;
and `am-Aram shall go into captivity to Kir,"
amar YHWH.

1:6 Koh amar YHWH:
"For three transgressions of `Azza,
yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment;
because they carried away captive the whole captivity,
to deliver them up le-Edom;
7 but I will send a fire on the wall of `Azza,
and it will devour its citadels.
8 I will cut off the inhabitant me-Ashdod,
and him who holds the scepter me-Ashq'lon;
and I will turn my hand `al-`Ekron;
and the remnant of P'lishtim will perish," amar Adonai YHWH.

1:9 Koh amar YHWH:
"For three transgressions of Tzor,
yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment;
because they delivered up the whole community le-Edom,
and didn't remember b'rit achim;
10 but I will send a fire on the wall of Tzor,
and it will devour its citadels."

1:11 Koh amar YHWH:
"For three transgressions of Edom,
yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment;
because he pursued his brother with the sword,
and cast off all pity,
and his anger raged continually,
and he kept his wrath forever;
12 but I will send esh b'Teiman,
and it will devour the citadels of Botzrah."

1:13 Koh amar YHWH:
"For three transgressions of b'nei-`Ammon,
yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment;
because they have ripped open the pregnant women of Gil`ad,
that they may enlarge their border.
14 But I will kindle a fire in the wall of Rabbah,
and it will devour its citadels,
with shouting in the day of battle,
with a storm in the day of the whirlwind;
15 and their melekh will go into captivity,
he and his sarim together,"
amar YHWH.

PEREQ ‏ב‎
CHAPTER 2

2:1 Koh amar YHWH:
"For three transgressions of Mo'av,
yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment;
because he burned the bones of melekh Edom into lime;
2 but I will send esh b'Mo'av,
and it will devour the citadels of ha-K'riyyot;
and Mo'av will die with tumult,
with shouting, and b'qol shofar;
3 and I will cut off shofet from among them,
and will kill all its sarim with him,"
amar YHWH.

2:4 Koh amar YHWH:
"For three transgressions of Y'hudah,
yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment;
because they have rejected Torat YHWH,
and have not kept his chukkim,
and their lies have led them astray,
after which avotam walked;
5 but I will send esh b'Y'hudah,
and it will devour the palaces of Y'erushalaim."

2:6 Koh amar YHWH:
"For three transgressions of Yisra'el,
yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment;
because they have sold ba-kesef tzaddik,
and the needy for a pair of sandals;
7 They pant after the dust of eretz on the head of the poor,
and turn aside the way of the humble;
and a man and his father use the same maiden,
to profane shem kadshi;
8 and they lay themselves down beside kol-mizbeach
on clothes taken in pledge;
and in beit Eloheihem they drink
yayin of those who have been fined.

2:9 Yet I destroyed ha-Emori before them,
whose height was like the height of the cedars,
and he was strong as the oaks;
yet I destroyed his fruit from above,
and his roots from beneath.
10 Also I brought you up me-eretz Mitzrayim,
and led you forty years ba-midbar,
to possess eretz ha-Emori.
11 I raised up mi-b'neikhem li'n'vi'im,
and some of your young men li'N'zirim.
Isn't this true, b'nei Yisra'el?"
n'um YHWH.
12 "But you gave ha-N'zirim yayin to drink, and commanded ha-n'vi'im,
saying, 'Don't prophesy!'

2:13 Hinneh, I will crush you in your place,
as a cart crushes that is full of grain.
14 Flight will perish from the swift;
v'chazak won’t strengthen his force;
v'gibbor shall not deliver his nefesh;
15 neither shall he stand who handles the bow;
and he who is swift of foot won't escape;
neither shall he who rides the horse deliver himself;
16 and he who is courageous ba-gibborim
will flee away naked ba-yom ha-hu,"
n'um YHWH.

PEREQ ‏ג‎
CHAPTER 3

3:1 Hear ha-davar hazeh asher diber YHWH against you, b'nei Yisra'el, al kol-ha-mishpachah which I brought up me-eretz Mitzrayim, lemor:
2 "Only you have I chosen
mi-kol mishp'chot ha-adamah.
Therefore I will punish you
for all of your iniquities."
3 Do two walk together,
unless they have agreed?
4 Will a lion roar in the thicket,
when he has no prey?
Does a young lion cry out of his den,
if he has caught nothing?
5 Can a bird fall in a trap on ha-aretz,
where no snare is set for him?
Does a snare spring up min-ha-adamah,
when there is nothing to catch?
6 Does the shofar sound b`ir,
v`am
not be afraid?
Does evil happen b`ir,
v'YHWH
hasn't done it?
7 Surely Adonai YHWH will do nothing,
unless he reveals his sod
to his avadim ha-n'vi'im.
8 The lion has roared.
Who will not fear?
Adonai YHWH diber.
Who can but prophesy?

3:9 Proclaim in the palaces b'Ashdod,
and in the citadels b'eretz Mitzrayim,
and say, "Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Shomron,
and see what unrest is in her,
and what oppression is among them."
10 "Indeed they don’t know to do right," n'um YHWH,
"Who hoard plunder and loot in their palaces."
11 Therefore koh amar Adonai YHWH:
"An adversary will overrun ha-aretz;
and he will pull down your strongholds,
and your fortresses will be plundered."

3:12 Koh amar YHWH: "As ha-ro`eh rescues out of the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear, so shall b'nei Yisra'el be rescued who sit in Shomron on the corner of a couch, and on the silken cushions of a bed."

3:13 "Listen, and testify b'veit Ya`akov,"
n'um Adonai YHWH, Elohei ha-ts'va'ot.
14 "Ki b'yom that I visit the transgressions of Yisra'el on him,
I will also punish mizb'chot Beit-El;
and the horns of ha-mizbe'ach will be cut off,
and fall la-aretz.
15 I will strike the winter house with the summer house;
and the houses of ivory will perish,
and the batim rabbim will have an end,"
n'um YHWH.

PEREQ ‏ד‎
CHAPTER 4

4:1 Listen to ha-davar hazeh, you cows of ha-Bashan,
asher b'har Shomron
,
who oppress the poor, who crush the needy,
who tell their adonim, "Bring that we may drink!"
2 Adonai YHWH has sworn by his holiness
ki hinneh, "Yamim ba'im upon you
that they will take you away with hooks,
and the last of you with fish hooks.
3 You will go out at the breaks in the wall,
everyone straight before her;
and you will cast yourselves into Harmon,"[♦]
n'um YHWH.

4:4 "Go to Beit-El, and sin;
ha-Gilgal, and sin more.
Bring your sacrifices la-boqer,
your tithes every three days,
5 offer a sacrifice me-chametz todah,
and proclaim n'davot and brag about them:
for this pleases you, b'nei Yisra'el,"
n'um Adonai YHWH.

4:6 "I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities,
and lack of lekhem in every town;
yet you haven't returned to me,"
n'um YHWH.

4:7 "I also have withheld the rain from you,
when there were yet three months to the harvest;
and I caused it to rain `al-`ir echat,
v`al-`ir echat
caused it not to rain.
One part was rained on,
and the part where it didn't rain withered.
8 So two or three cities staggered to one city
to drink mayim, and were not satisfied:
yet you haven't returned to me,"
n'um YHWH.

4:9 "I struck you with blight and mildew
many times in your gardens and your vineyards;
and the swarming locusts have devoured your fig trees and your zetim;
yet you haven't returned to me,"
n'um YHWH.

4:10 "I sent plagues among you b'derekh Mitzrayim.
I have slain your young men with the sword,
and have carried away your horses;
and I filled your nostrils with the stench of your camp,
yet you haven’t returned to me,"
n'um YHWH.

4:11 "I have overthrown some of you,
as when Elohim overthrew S'dom v'et-`Amorah,
and you were like a burning stick plucked out of the burning;
yet you haven't returned to me,"
n'um YHWH.

4:12 "Therefore I will do this to you, Yisra'el;
because I will do this to you,
prepare to meet Eloheikha, Yisra'el.

4:13 Ki hinneh, he who forms harim, creates ruach,
and declares l'adam what is his thought;
who makes shachar (into) darkness
and treads on the high places of aretz:
YHWH, Elohei ts'va'ot sh'mo."

PEREQ ‏ה‎
CHAPTER 5

5:1 Listen to ha-davar hazeh which I take up for a lamentation over you, beit Yisra'el.
2 "The virgin of Yisra'el has fallen;
She shall rise no more.
She is cast down on her adamah;
there is no one to raise her up."
3 Ki koh amar Adonai YHWH:
"Ha-`ir that went out elef
shall have a hundred left,
and that which went out one hundred
shall have ten left
l'veit Yisra'el."

5:4 Ki koh amar YHWH l'veit Yisra'el:
"Seek me, and you will live;
5 but don't seek Beit-El,
v'ha-Gilgal
do not enter.
and don’t pass to B'er Sheva:
ki ha-Gilgal shall surely go into captivity,
and Beit-El shall come to nothing.

5:6 Seek YHWH, and you will live;
lest he break out ka-esh beit Yosef,
and it devour, and there be no one to quench it in Beit-El.
7 You who turn mishpat to wormwood,
u'tz'dakah la-aretz you cast down:

5:8 seek him who made Khemah u'Kh'sil, [the Pleiades and Orion]
and turns death la-boqer,
v'yom, lailah of darkness;
who calls l'mei ha-yam,
and pours them out `al-p'nei ha-aretz,
YHWH sh'mo,
9 who brings sudden destruction on the strong,
so that destruction comes on the fortress.

5:10 They hate him who reproves in the gate,[♦]
and they abhor him who speaks blamelessly.
11 Therefore, because you trample on the poor
and take taxes from him of wheat,
you have built batim of cut stone,
but you will not dwell in them.
You have planted pleasant vineyards,
but you shall not drink their yayin.
12 For I know how many are your offenses,
and how great are your chata'im
you who afflict tzaddik, who take a kofer,
and who turn away the needy in the gate.
13 Therefore a prudent person keeps silent ba`et ha-hi, ki `et ra`ah hi.

5:14 Seek tov v'al-ra,
that you may live;
and so YHWH, Elohei ts'va'ot will be with you,
as you say.
15 Hate evil, love good,
and establish mishpat in the gate.
It may be that YHWH, Elohei ts'va'ot,
will be gracious to the remnant of Yosef."
16 Therefore koh amar YHWH, Elohei ts'va'ot, Adonai:
"Wailing will be in all the wide ways;
and they will say in all the streets, 'Ho!  Ho!' [Alas]
and they will call the farmer to mourning,
and those who are skillful in lamentation to wailing.
17 In all vineyards there will be wailing;
for I will pass through the middle of you,"
amar YHWH.

5:18 "Hoi to you who desire yom YHWH!
Why do you long for yom YHWH?
It is darkness, v'lo or.
19 As if an ish fled from a lion,
and a bear met him;
Or he went into ha-bayit and leaned his hand on the wall,
and a nachash bit him.
20 Won't yom YHWH be darkness, v'lo or?
Even very dark, and no brightness in it?

5:21 I hate, I despise your chagim,
and I can't stand your solemn assemblies.
22 Yes, though you offer me your `olot u'mincha,
I will not accept them;
v'shelem of your fat animals I will I will not regard.
23 Take away from me the noise of your shirim!
I will not listen to the music of your harps.
24 But ka-mayim let mishpat roll on,
u'tz'dakah like a mighty nachal.

5:25 "Did you bring to me ha-z'vachim u'minchah ba-midbar for forty years, beit Yisra'el?  26 You will carry Sikkut your melekh and the images of Kiyyun, kokhav eloheikhem, which you made for yourselves.  27 Therefore I will cause you to go into captivity beyond Dammeseq," amar YHWH, Elohei ts'va'ot sh'mo.

PEREQ ‏ו‎
CHAPTER 6

6:1 Hoy to those who are at ease b'Tziyyon,
and to those who are secure b'har Shomron,
the notable men reshit ha-goyim,
to whom beit Yisra'el come!
2 Go to Calneh, and see;
and from there go to Chamat rabbah;
then go down to Gat-P'lishtim.
are they better than ha-mam'l'khot ha-eleh?
or is their border greater than your border?
3 (Those who) put far away the yom ra,
and cause the seat of chamas to come near,
4 who lie on beds of ivory,
and stretch themselves on their couches,
and eat the lambs out of the flock,
and the calves out of the middle of the stall,
5 who strum on the strings of a harp,
who devised for themselves songs, like David;
6 who drink yayin in bowls,
and anoint themselves with reshit sh'manim,
but they are not grieved for the affliction of Yosef.
7 Therefore they will now go captive with the first who go captive;
and the feasting and lounging will end.

6:8 "Adonai YHWH has sworn by his nefesh,"
n'um YHWH, Elohei Ts'va'ot:
"I abhor the pride of Ya`akov,
and detest his fortresses.
Therefore I will deliver up `ir with all that is in it.

6:9 It will happen that there remain ten anashim b'vayit echad, they will die.  10 "When one's uncle [lit. "loved one"] carries him, even he who burns him, to bring bones min ha-bayit, and asks him who is in the innermost parts of ha-bayit, 'Is there yet any with you?' And he says, 'No;' then he will say, 'Keep silent!  Indeed we must not make mention b'shem YHWH.'

6:11 "Ki hinneh, YHWH commands,
and ha-bayit ha-gadol will be smashed to pieces,
and ha-bayit ha-qaton into bits.
12 Do horses run ba-selah?
Does one plow there with oxen?
But you have turned mishpat into poison,
and the fruit of tz'dakah into bitterness;
13 you who rejoice l'lo davar [into a thing of nothing],
who say, 'Haven’t we taken for ourselves horns by our own strength?'
14 "Ki hinneh, I will raise up against you, beit Yisra'el,"
n'um YHWH, Elohei Ts'va'ot
, "a goy;"
"and they will afflict you from the entrance of Chamat
ad-nachal ha-`aravah
."

PEREQ ‏ז‎
CHAPTER 7

7:1 Thus Adonai YHWH showed me: v'hinneh, he formed locusts in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; v'hinneh, it was the latter growth after the harvest of ha-melekh.  2 V'hinneh, when they finished eating the grass of ha-aretz, then I said,
"Adonai YHWH, forgive, I beg you!
How could Ya`akov stand,
for he is small?"
3 YHWH relented concerning this.
"It shall not be," amar YHWH.

7:4 Thus Adonai YHWH showed me v'hinneh, Adonai YHWH called for judgment ba-esh; and it dried up the great deep, and would have devoured the land.  5 Then I said,
"Adonai YHWH, stop, I beg you!
How could Ya`akov stand?
Ki qaton hu."  6 YHWH relented concerning this.
"This also shall not be," amar Adonai YHWH.

7:7 Thus he showed me v'hinneh, Adonai stood beside a wall made by a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand.  8 Vayomer Adonai to me, "What do you see, `Amos?"  I said, "A plumb line."  Vayomer Adonai,
"Hinneh, I will set a plumb line in the middle of `ami Yisra'el.  I will not again pass by them any more.
9 The high places of Yischak will be desolate,
the sanctuaries of Yisra'el will be laid waste;
and I will rise against beit Yarav`am with the sword."

7:10 Then Amatz'yah kohen Bet-El sent to Yarav`am melekh Yisra'el, lemor, "`Amos has conspired against you in the middle of beit Yisra'el.  Ha-aretz is not able to bear all his d'varim.  11 Ki koh amar `Amos,
"Yarav`am will die by the sword,
v'Yisra'el shall surely be led away captive
out of his adamah.' "
7:12 Vayomer Amatz'yah el-`Amos, "Chozeh, go, flee away el-eretz Y'hudah, and there eat lekhem, and prophesy there:  13 (But at) Beit-El don’t prophesy again any more; ki mikdash-melekh hu, u'veit mamlakha hu!"

7:14 Then `Amos answered vayomer el-`Amatz'yah, "Lo navi anochi, v'lo ven-navi anochi; but I was a herdsman, and a farmer of sycamore figs;  15 and YHWH took me from following the flock, vayomer YHWH to me, 'Go, prophesy el-`ami Yisra'el.'
16 V`attah sh'ma d'var YHWH:
'You say, Don't prophesy `al-Yisra'el,
and don’t proclaim against `al-beit Yischak.'
17 Therefore koh amar YHWH:
'Your ishshah shall be a prostitute ba`ir,
and your banim and your banot shall fall by the sword,
and your adamah shall be divided by line;
v'attah, `al-adamah t'meah shall die,
and Yisra'el shall surely be led away captive out of his adamah.' "

PEREQ ‏ח‎
CHAPTER 8

8:1 Thus Adonai YHWH showed me: hinneh, a basket of summer fruit.  2 Vayomer, "`Amos, what do you see?"  I said, "A basket of summer fruit."  Vayomer YWHW to me,
"The end has come el-`amo Yisra'el.[♦]
I will not again pass by them any more.
3 Shirot hechal ba-yom ha-hu will be wailing,"
n'um Adonai YHWH.
"The dead bodies will be many.
B'kol maqom they will throw them out with silence.

8:4 Hear this, you who desire to swallow up the needy,
and cause the poor of aretz to fail,
5 lemor, 'When will ha-chodesh be gone,
that we may sell grain?
v'ha-Shabbat,
that we may market wheat,
making the eifah small, and the shekel large,
and dealing falsely with balances of deceit;
6 that we may buy the poor ba-kesef,
and the needy for a pair of sandals,
and sell the sweepings with the wheat?' "

8:7 YHWH has sworn by the pride of Ya`akov,
"Surely I will never forget any of their ma`asim.
8 Won't ha-aretz tremble for this,
and everyone mourn who dwells in it?
Yes, it will rise up wholly like ha-y'or [the river Nile];
and it will be stirred up and sink again, ki-y'or Mitzrayim[♦].

8:9 V'hayah b'yom ha-hu," n'um Adonai YHWH,
"that I will cause ha-shemesh to go down at noon,
and I will darken ha-aretz b'yom or.
10 I will turn your chagim into mourning,
and all your shirim into lamentation;
and I will make you wear sackcloth on all your bodies,
and baldness `al-kol-rosh.
I will make it like the mourning for an only son,
and its end like a bitter day.

8:11 Hinneh, yamei ba'im," n'um Adonai YHWH,
"that I will send a famine ba-aretz,
not a famine of lekhem, nor a thirst la-mayim,
but of hearing divrei YHWH.
12 They will wander mi-yam `ad-yam,
u'mi-tsafon v`ad mizrach
;
they will run back and forth to seek d'var YHWH,
and will not find it.

8:13 B'yom ha-hu, ha-b'tulot ha-yafot and the young men
will faint for thirst.
14 Those who swear by the sin of Shomron,
and say, ‘As Eloheikha, Dan, lives;'
and, 'As the way of B'er-Sheva lives;'
they will fall, and never rise up again."

PEREQ ‏ט‎
CHAPTER 9

9:1 I saw Adonai standing `al-ha-mizbeach, vayomer,
"Strike the tops of the pillars, that the thresholds may shake;
and break them in pieces on the head of all of them;
and I will kill the last of them with the sword:
there shall not one of them flee away,
and there shall not one of them escape.

9:2 Though they dig into Sh'ol,
there my hand will take them;
and though they climb up to ha-shamayim,
i-sham
I will bring them down.
3 Though they hide themselves b'rosh ha-Karmel,
I will search and take them out from there;
and though they be hidden from my sight in the bottom of ha-yam,
mi-sham
I will command ha-nachash, and it will bite them.
4 Though they go into captivity before their enemies,
there I will command the sword, and it will kill them.
I will set my eyes on them
l'ra`ah v'lo l'tovah.

9:5 V'Adonai, YHWH ts'va'ot,
is he who touches ha-aretz and it melts,
and all who dwell in it will mourn;
and it will rise up wholly ka-y'or,
and will sink again, k'y'or Mitzrayim.
6 It is he who builds his rooms ba-shamayim,
and has founded his vault `al-eretz;
he who calls l'mei ha-yam,
and pours them out `al-p'nei ha-aretz;
YHWH sh'mo
.

9:7 Are you not like b'nei Kushiyyim to me,
b'nei Yisra'el?" n'um YHWH.
"Haven't I brought up Yisra'el me-eretz Mitzrayim,
u'F'lishtiyyim mi-Kaphtor va'Aram mi-Kir
?
8 Hinneh, the eyes of Adonai YHWH ba-mam'lakha ha-chatta'ah,
and I will destroy it me-`al p'nei ha-adamah;
except that I will not utterly destroy beit Ya`akov,"
n'um YHWH.

9:9 "Ki-hinneh, I will command,
and I will sift b'khol ha-goyim et-b'nei Yisra'el,
as grain is sifted in a sieve,
yet not the least kernel will fall on aretz.
10 All the sinners of my people will die by the sword,
who say, 'Evil won't overtake nor meet us.'

9:11 Ba-yom ha-hu I will raise up
sukkat David,
and close up its breaches, and I will raise up its ruins,
and I will build it k'y'mei `olam;[♦]
12 that they may possess the remnant of Edom,
v'khol-ha-goyim
who are called by my name,"
n'um YHWH oseh zot.
13 "Hinneh, yamim ba'im," n'um YHWH,
"that the plowman shall overtake the reaper,
and the one treading grapes him who sows ha-zera;
and sweet wine will drip from he-harim,
and flow from the hills.
14 I will bring `ami Yisra'el back from captivity,
and they will rebuild the ruined cities, and inhabit them;
and they will plant vineyards, and drink yayin from them.
They shall also make gardens, and eat their fruit.
15 I will plant them on their adamah,
and they will no more be plucked up
out of their adamah which I have given them,"
amar YHWH Eloheikha.

[♦]
4:3:  "Harmon" - "high fortress," site unknown; the only mention of it in the Bible.
5:10:  Gate – the city gate was more than a passageway into the city.  It was a place where the elders of the city met to settle disputes, to hold court, to make announcements, etc.  It was a meeting place for the community. (https://www.gotquestions.org/city-gate.html)
8:2:  The Hebrew words for "summer fruit" and "end" are very similar.  This was a play on words to illustrate a point to Amos.
8:8:  The "river of Egypt" is NOT the Nile.  Just check any biblical maps for the "stream" or "wadi" or "brook" of Egypt just south of Gaza.
9:11:  "olam": here referring to the former days of the tent or booth of David, it is often translated as "world" or "eternity."  It means an indefinite length of time.
