CHAPTER 1

1:1 Va'y'hi d'var YHWH (came) el-Yonah ben-Amittai, lemor,  2 "Arise, go to Nin'veh, ha-ir ha-g'dolah, and proclaim against it, for their wickedness has come up before me."  3 But Yonah rose up to flee to Tarshish mi-lifnei YHWH.  He went down to Yafo and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid its fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish mi-lifnei YHWH.

1:4 But YHWH sent out a ruach g'dolah el-ha-yam, and there was a mighty storm ba-yam, so that the ship was likely to break up.  5 Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his eloah.  They threw the cargo that was in the ship el-ha-yam to lighten the ship.  But Yonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship, and he was lying down, and was fast asleep.  6 So the ship master came to him vayomer to him, "What do you mean, sleeper?  Arise, call on your Elohim!  Maybe ha-Elohim will notice us, so that we won't perish."

1:7 They all said to each other, "Come!  Let's cast lots, that we may know who is responsible for ha-ra'ah hazot that is on us."  So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Yonah.  8 Then they asked him, "Tell us, please, for whose cause ha-ra'ah hazot is on us.  What is your occupation?  Where do you come from?  What is your eretz?  Of mi-zeh am attah?"  9 Vayomer to them, "Ivri anochi, and I fear YHWH, Elohei ha-shamayim asher asah et-ha-yam and the dry land."  10 Then ha-anashim were exceedingly afraid, vayomru to him, "Ma-zot that have you done?"  For ha-anashim knew that he was fleeing mi-lifneh YHWH, because he had told them.

1:11 Vayomru to him, "What shall we do to you, that ha-yam may be calm to us?"  Ki ha-yam grew more and more stormy.  12 Vayomer to them, "Take me up, and throw me el-ha-yam.  Then ha-yam will be calm for you; for I know that because of me the storm ha-gadol hazeh is on you."  13 Nevertheless ha-anashim rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not, ki-ha-yam grew more and more stormy against them.  14 Therefore they cried el-YHWH vayomru, "We beg you, YHWH, we beg you, don't let us die b'nefesh ha-ish hazeh, and don't lay on us innocent blood; ki-attah, YHWH, have done as it pleased you."  15 So they took up Yonah and threw him el-ha-yam; and ha-yam ceased its raging.  16 Then ha-anashim feared YHWH exceedingly; and they offered a zevach la-YHWH, and made n'darim.

1:17(2:1 in Jewish Bible) YHWH prepared a dag gadol to swallow up Yonah, and Yonah was in the belly of ha-dag sh'loshah yamim u'sh'losha leilot.

CHAPTER 2

2:1(2:2 in Jewish Bible) Then Yonah prayed to YHWH Elohav out of the belly of ha-dagah.  2(3) Vayomer,
"I called because of my affliction el-YHWH.
He answered me.
Out of the belly of She'ol I cried.  You heard my voice.
3(4) For you threw me into the depths,
into the heart of yamim.
The flood was all around me.
All your waves and your billows passed over me.
4(5) I said, 'I have been banished from your sight;
yet I will look again toward Hechal Kadshekha.'
5(6) Mayim surrounded me,
even ad-nefesh.
The deep was around me.
The weeds were wrapped around my head.
6(7) I went down to the bottoms of the mountains.
Ha-aretz barred me l'olam:
yet (have you brought) up my life from the pit,
YHWH Elohai.
7(8) "When my nefesh fainted within me, I remembered YHWH.
My prayer came in to you, el-Heikhal Kadshekha.
8(9) Those who regard lying vanities
forsake their own chesed.
9(10) But I will sacrifice to you b'qol todah.
I will pay that which I have vowed.
Yeshuatah la'YHWH."
10(11) Vayomer YHWH la-dag, and it vomited out Yonah on the dry land.

CHAPTER 3

3:1 Va'y'hi d'var-YHWH el-Yonah shenit lemor,  2 "Arise, go el-Nin'veh, ha-ir ha-g'dolah, and proclaim to it the message that I give you."  3 So Yonah arose, and went el-Nin'veh, ki-d'var YHWH.  Now Nin'veh was an ir g'dolah l'elohim, three days' journey across.  4 Yonah began to enter into the city a journey of yom echad, and he cried out, and said, "In forty days, Nin'veh will be overthrown!"  5 Anshei Nin'veh believed b'Elohim; and they proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, mi-g'dolim v'ad k'tanam.

3:6 Ha-davar reached el-melekh Nin'veh, and he arose from his kisseh, and took off his royal robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.  7 He made a proclamation vayomer b'Nin'veh by the decree of ha-melekh and his nobles, lemor, "Let not ha-adam v'ha-b'hemah, herd nor flock, taste anything; let them not feed, nor drink mayim;  8 but let them be covered with sackcloth, ha-adam v'ha-b'hemah, and let them cry mightily el-Elohim.  Yes, let them turn everyone from his evil way, and from the violence that is in his hands.  9 Who knows whether Elohim will not turn and relent, and turn away from his fierce anger, so that we might not perish?"

3:10 Elohim saw their ma'asim, that they turned from their evil way.  Elohim relented of the disaster which he said he would do to them, and he didn't do it.

CHAPTER 4

4:1 But it displeased Yonah exceedingly, and he was angry.  2 He prayed el-YHWH, and said, "Please, YHWH, wasn't this my davar when I was still in my own country?  Therefore I hurried to flee to Tarshish, for I knew that you are a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, v'rav chesed, and you relent of doing harm.  3 Therefore now, YHWH, take, I beg you, my nefesh from me; for it is better for me to die than to live."  4 Vayomer YHWH, "Is it right for you to be angry?"  5 Then Yonah went min ha-ir, and sat east of ha-ir, and there made himself a sukkah, and sat under it in the shade, until he might see what would become of ha-ir.

4:6 YHWH Elohim prepared a plant, and made it to come up over Yonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to deliver him from his discomfort.  So Yonah was exceedingly glad because of the plant.  7 But Elohim prepared a worm at hashachar the next day, and it chewed on the plant, so that it withered.  8 When ha-shemesh arose, Elohim prepared a sultry east wind; and ha-shemesh beat al-rosh Yonah, so that he fainted, and requested for himself that he might die, and said, "It is better for me to die than to live."  9 Vayomer Elohim el-Yonah, "Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?"  Vayomer, "I am right to be angry, even ad-mavet."  10 Vayomer YHWH, "You have been concerned for the plant, for which you have not labored, neither made it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night.  11 Shouldn't I be concerned for Nin'veh, ha-ir ha-g'dolah, in which are more than one hundred twenty thousand persons who can't discern between their right hand and their left hand; u'v'hemah rabah?"
