CHAPTER 34

34:1 Come near, goyim, to hear!
Listen, you peoples.
Let ha-aretz and all it contains hear;
the world, and everything that comes from it.
2 For YHWH is enraged al-kol ha-goyim,
and angry with all their armies.
He has utterly destroyed them, has given them over for slaughter.
3 Their slain will also be cast out,
and the stench of their dead bodies will come up;
and harim will melt from their blood.
4 All of the army of ha-shamayim shall rot away.
Ha-shamayim will be rolled up like a sefer,
and all its armies will wither and fall,
as a leaf fades mi-gefen or a fig tree.

5 For my sword has drunk its fill ba-shamayim.
Hinneh
, it will come down al-Edom,
v'al-am
of my curse, l'mishpat.
6 The sword of YHWH is filled with blood.
It is covered with fat,
with the blood of lambs and goats,
with the fat of the kidneys of rams;
for YHWH has a zevach in Botzrah.
And a great slaughter b'eretz Edom.
7 The wild oxen will come down with them,
and the young bulls with the mighty bulls;
and their land will be drunken with blood,
and their dust made greasy with fat.

8 For YHWH has a day of vengeance,
a year of recompense for the cause of Tziyyon.
9 Its streams will be turned into pitch,
its dust into sulfur,
And its land will become burning pitch.
10 It won't be quenched lailah v'yoman.
Its smoke will go up l'olam.
Mi-dor la-dor
, it will lie waste.
No one will pass through it forever and ever.
11 But the pelican [mod.] and the porcupine will possess it.
The owl and the raven will dwell in it.
He will stretch the line of confusion over it,
and the plumb line of emptiness.
12 They shall call its nobles to the kingdom, but none shall be there;
and all its sarim shall be nothing.
13 Thorns will come up in its palaces,
nettles and thistles in its fortresses;
and it will be a habitation of jackals,
a court for ostriches.
14 The desert creatures will meet with the jackals,
and the wild goat will cry to his fellow.
Yes, the owl shall settle there,
and shall find herself a place of rest.

15 The arrowsnake will make her nest there,
and lay, hatch, and gather under her shade.
Yes, the kites will be gathered there, every one with her mate.
16 Search me-al sefer YHWH, and read:
not one of these will be missing.
none will lack her mate.
For my mouth has commanded,
and his ruach has gathered them.
17 He has cast the lot for them,
and his hand has divided it to them with a measuring line.
They shall possess it ad-olam.
L'dor va-dor
they will dwell in it.

PEREQ ‏לה‎
CHAPTER 35

35:1 Midbar and the dry land will be glad.
Aravah will rejoice and blossom like the crocus.
2 It will blossom abundantly,
and rejoice even with joy and singing.
K'vod ha-L'vanon will be given to it,
the excellence of ha-Karmel v'ha-Sharon.
They will see k'vod YHWH,
the excellence of Eloheinu.

3 Strengthen the weak hands,
and make firm the feeble knees.
4 Tell those who have a fearful heart,
"Be strong.  Don't be afraid.
Hinneh, Eloheikhem
will come with vengeance,
the retribution of Elohim.
Hu yavo
and save you.

5 Then the eyes of the blind will be opened,
and the ears of the deaf will be unstopped.
6 Then the lame man will leap like a deer,
and the tongue of the mute will sing.
For mayim will break out ba-midbar,
and streams ba-aravah.
7 The burning sand will become a pool,
and the thirsty ground springs of mayim.
Grass with reeds and rushes will be in the habitation of jackals, where they lay.

8 A highway will be there va-derekh,
and it will be called Derekh ha-Kodesh.
Tameh shall not pass over it,
but it will be for wayfarers.
Wicked fools will not go there.
9 No lion will be there,
nor will any ravenous animal go up on it.
They will not be found there;
but the redeemed will walk there.
10 The ransomed ones of YHWH will return,
and come with singing to Tziyyon;
v'simchat olam will be on their heads.
They will obtain sason v'simchah,
and sorrow and sighing will flee away."

CHAPTER 36

36:1 Va'y'hi in the fourteenth year la-melekh Chizikiyahu that Sancheriv melekh Ashshur attacked all of the fortified cities of Y'hudah and captured them.  2 Melekh Ashshur sent Ravshakeh mi-Lachish to Y'rushalaim el-ha-melekh Chizkiyahu with a large army.  He stood by the aqueduct from the upper pool in the fuller's field highway.  3 Then Elyakim ben-Chilkiyahu, who was over ha-bayit, v'Shevna ha-sofer, v'Yoach ben-Asaf, the recorder, came out to him.

36:4 Vayomer Ravshakeh to them, "Now tell Chizikiyahu, 'Ko-amar ha-melekh ha-gadol, melekh Ashshur, "What confidence is this in which you trust?  5 I say that your counsel and strength for the war are only vain words. Now in whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me?  6 Hinneh, you trust in the staff of this bruised reed al-Mitzrayim, which if a man leans on it, it will go into his hand and pierce it.  So is Par'oh, melekh Mitzrayim to all who trust in him.  7 But if you tell me, 'We trust in YHWH Eloheinu,' isn't that he whose high places and whose altars Chizkiyahu has taken away, vayomer l'Y'hudah u'l'Y'rushalaim, 'lifnei ha-mizbeach hazeh you shall worship'"  8 Now therefore, please make a pledge et-adoni melekh Ashshur, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them.  9 How then can you turn away the face of one captain of the least of avdei adoni, and put your trust al-Mitzrayim for chariots and for horsemen?  10 Have I come up now without YHWH al-ha-aretz ha-zot to destroy it? YHWH said to me, "Go up el-ha-aretz hazot, and destroy it."'"

36:11 Vayomer Elyakim v'Shevna v'Yoach el-Ravshakeh, "Please speak to your avadim in Aramit, for we understand it; and don't speak to us in Y'hudit in the hearing of ha-am who are on the wall.  12 But Ravshakeh said, "Has my master sent me only to your master and to you, to speak these words, and not el-ha-anashim who sit on the wall, who will eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?"

36:13 Then Ravshakeh stood, and called out b'qol gadol (in the language of) Y'hudit, vayomer, "Hear the divrei ha-melekh ha-gadol, melekh Ashshur!  14 Koh amar ha-melekh, 'Don't let Chizekiyahu deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you.  15 Don't let Chizkiyahu make you trust in YHWH, saying, "YHWH will surely deliver us.  Ha-ir hazot won't be given b'yad melekh Ashshur."'  16 Don't listen to Chizkiyahu, ki koh amar ha-melekh Ashshur, 'Make with me a blessing, and come out to me; and each of you eat from his gefen, and each one from his fig tree, and each one of you drink the waters of his own cistern;  17 until I come and take you away to an eretz like your own eretz, an eretz of grain and tirosh, eretz lechem and vineyards.  18 Beware lest Chizkiyahu persuade you, saying, "YHWH will deliver us."  Have any of the elohei ha-goyim delivered their lands mi-yad melekh Ashshur?  19 Where are elohei Chamat v'Arpad?  Where are elohei Sefarvayim?  Have they delivered Shomron mi-yadi?  20 Who are they among all the elohei of these countries that have delivered their country out of my hand, that YHWH should deliver Y'rushalaim mi-yadi?'"

36:21 But they remained silent, and said nothing in reply, ki mitzvat ha-melekh was, "Don't answer him."  22 Va-yavo Elyakim ben-Chilkiyahu, who was over ha-bayit, v'Shevna ha-sofer, v'Yoach, ben-Asaf, the recorder, came to Chizkiyahu with their clothes torn, and told him divrei Ravshakeh.

PEREQ ‏לז‎
CHAPTER 37

37:1 It happened, when melekh Chizkiyahu heard it, that he tore his clothes, covered himself with sackcloth, and went into beit YHWH.  2 He sent Elyakim, who was over ha-bayit, and Shevna ha-sofer, and ziknei ha-kohenim, covered with sackcloth, to Y'shayahu ben-Amotz, ha-navi.  3 They said to him, "Koh amar Chizkiyahu, 'Ha-yom hazeh is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of rejection; for the banim have come to the birth, and there is no strength to bring forth.  4 It may be YHWH Eloheikha will hear divrei Ravshakeh, whom melekh Ashshur his adon has sent to defy Elohim chai, and will rebuke ha-d'varim which YHWH Eloheikha has heard.  Therefore lift up your t'fillah for the remnant that is left.'"

37:5 So the avadim of melekh Chizkiyahu came el-Y'shayahu.  6 Vayomer Y'shayahu to them, "Tell your adon, 'Ko amar YHWH, "Don't be afraid of ha-d'varim that you have heard, with which the servants of melekh Ashshur have blasphemed me.  7 Hinneh, I will put a ruach in him and he will hear a report, and will return to his own eretz.  I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own eretz."'"

37:8 So Ravshakeh returned, and found melekh Ashshur warring against Livnah, for he had heard that he was departed mi-Lachish.
9 He heard news concerning Tirhakah, melekh Cush, "He has come out to fight against you."  When he heard it, he sent malakhim al-Chizkiyahu, lemor,  10 "Thus you shall speak el-Chizkiyahu, melekh Y'hudah, lemor, 'Don't let Eloheikha in whom you trust deceive you, saying, "Y'rushalaim won't be given b'yad melekh Ashshur."  11 Hinneh, you have heard what malkhei Ashshur have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly.  Shall you be delivered?  12 Have elohei ha-goyim delivered them, which my avot have destroyed, Gozan, Charan, v'Retzef, u'v'nei Eden asher b'Telassar?  13 Where is melekh Chamat u'melekh Arpad u'melekh S'farvayim, Hena v'Ivvah?'"

37:14 Chizkiyahu received ha-s'farim mi-yad ha-malakhim and read it.  Then he went up to beit YHWH and spread it lifneh YHWH.  15 Chizkiyahu prayed to YHWH, lemor; 16 "YHWH Tz'va'ot, Elohei Yisra'el, who sits upon ha-k'ruvim, attah hu ha-Elohim, alone, of all the kingdoms of ha-aretz.  You have made ha-shamayim v'et ha-aretz.  17 Turn your ear, YHWH, and hear.  Open your eyes, YHWH, and behold.  Hear kol divrei Sanacheriv, who has sent to defy Elohim chai.  18 Truly, YHWH, malkhei Ashshur have destroyed kol ha-artzim and their land,  19 and have cast eloheihem ba-esh; for they were no elohim, ki im-ma'aseh yadei, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them.  20 Now therefore, YHWH Eloheinu, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you only are YHWH."

37:21 Then Y'shayahu ben Amotz sent to Chizkiyahu lemor, "Koh amar YHWH, Elohei Yisra'el, 'Because you have prayed to me against Sancheriv, melekh Ashshur,  22 zeh ha-davar asher diber YHWH concerning him.
The virgin bat Tziyyon has despised you and ridiculed you.
Bat Y'rushalaim
has shaken her head at you.

23 Whom have you defied and blasphemed?
Against whom have you exalted your voice
and lifted up your eyes on high?
El Kodesh [one of] Yisra'el.
24 By your avadim, have you defied Adonai,
and have said, "With the multitude of my chariots
I have come up to the height of the harim,
to the innermost parts of L'vanon.
I will cut down its tall cedars
and its choice fir trees.
I will enter into its farthest height,
the forest of its fruitful field.
25 I have dug and drunk mayim,
and with the sole of my feet
I will dry up all the rivers of Matzor [Egypt]."

26 Have you not heard
how I have done it long ago,
and formed it in ancient times?
Now I have brought it to pass,
that it should be yours to destroy fortified cities,
turning them into ruinous heaps.
27 Therefore their inhabitants had little power.
They were dismayed and confounded.
They were like the grass of the field,
and like the green herb,
like the grass on the housetops,
and like a field before its crop has grown.

28 But I know your sitting down,
your going out, your coming in,
and your raging against me.
29 Because of your raging against me,
and because your arrogance has come up into my ears,
therefore will I put my hook in your nose
and my bridle in your lips,
and I will turn you back ba-derekh
by which you came.

37:30 This shall be the sign to you.  You will eat this year that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs from the same; and in the third year sow and reap and plant vineyards, and eat their fruit.  31 The remnant that is escaped of beit Y'hudah will again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.  32 Ki mi-Y'rushalaim a remnant will go forth, and survivors will escape me-har Tziyyon.  The zeal of YHWH Tz'va'ot will perform this.'

37:33 Therefore ko amar YHWH el melekh Ashshur, 'He will not come to this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither will he come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it.  34 Ba-derekh that he came, by the same he shall return, v'el-ha-ir hazot lo yavo,' n'um YHWH.  35 'For I will defend ha-ir hazot to save it, for my own sake, and for the sake of my servant David.'"

37:36 Malakh YHWH went out and struck one hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the camp of Ashshur.  When men arose early ba-boker, hinneh, these were all dead bodies.  37 So Sancheriv, melekh Ashshur, departed, and returned and dwelt b'Nin'veh.  38 It happened, as he was worshipping in beit Nisrokh his god, that Adrammelekh v'Saretzer his banim struck him with the sword; and they escaped to eretz Ararat.  Esar Chaddon b'no reigned in his place.

PEREQ ‏לח‎
CHAPTER 38

38:1 Ba-yamim ha-hem, Chizkiyahu was sick and near death.  Y'shayahu ha-navi, ben-Amotz, came to him, vayomer to him, "Koh amar YHWH, 'Set your bayit in order, for you will die, and not live.'"  2 Then Chizkiyahu turned his face to the wall and prayed to YHWH,  3 vayomer, "Remember now, YHWH, I beg you, how I have walked before you be-emet and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in your sight."  Chizkiyahu wept bitterly.  4 Va'y'hi d'var YHWH came to Y'shayahu, lemor,  5 "Go, and tell Chizkiyahu, 'Koh amar YHWH, Elohei David your father, "I have heard your prayer.  I have seen your tears.  Hinneh, I will add fifteen years to your life.  6 I will deliver you and ha-ir hazot out of the hand of melekh Ashshur, and I will defend ha-ir hazot.

38:7 This shall be the sign to you from YHWH, that YHWH will do this thing that he has spoken.  8 Hinneh, I will cause the shadow on the steps [i.e., used as a sundial], which has gone down on the steps of Achaz with the sun, to return backward ten steps.  So ha-shemesh returned ten steps on the steps on which it had gone down."'"

38:9 The writing of Chizkiyahu, melekh Y'hudah, when he had been sick, and had recovered of his sickness.
10 I said, "In the middle of my life I go into the gates of Sh'ol.
I am deprived of the residue of my shanot."
11 I said, "I won't see Yah,
Yah b'eretz ha-chayyim
.
I will see adam no more with the inhabitants of the world.

12 My dwelling is removed,
and is carried away from me like the ohel of a shepherd.
I have rolled up, like a weaver, my life.
He will cut me off from the loom.
Mi yom ad lailah you will make an end of me.
13 I waited patiently ad boker.
He breaks all my bones like a lion.
Mi yom ad lailah you will make an end of me.

14 I chattered like a swallow or a crane.
I moaned ka yonah.
My eyes weaken looking upward.
Adonai, I am oppressed.
Be my security."
15 What will I say?
He has both spoken to me, and himself has done it.
I will walk carefully all my years because of the anguish of my nefesh.

16 Adonai, men live by these things;
and my ruach finds life in all of them:
you restore me, and cause me to live.
17 Hinneh, for shalom I had great anguish,
but you have in love for my nefesh delivered it from the pit of corruption;
for you have cast all my chatta'im behind your back.
18 For Sh'ol can't praise you.
Death can't celebrate you.
Those who go down into the pit can't hope for your truth.
19 Ha-chai, ha-chai, he shall praise you, as I do this day.
The father shall make known your truth to the children.

20 YHWH will save me.
Therefore we will sing my songs with stringed instruments
all the days of our life
al beit YHWH.

38:21 Vayomer Y'shayahu, "Let them take a cake of figs, and lay it for a poultice on the boil, and he shall recover."  22 Chizkiyahu also had said, "Mah ot that I will go up to beit YHWH?"

PEREQ ‏לט‎
CHAPTER 39

39:1 At that time, Merodach Baladan ben-Baladan, melekh Bavel, sent s'farim u'minchah el-Chizkiyahu; for he heard that he had been sick, and had recovered.  2 Chizkiyahu was pleased with them, and showed them the house of his precious things, ha-kesef v'et-ha-zahav, the spices, and the precious shemen, and all the house of his armor, and all that was found in his treasures.  There was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Chizkiyahu didn't show them.  3 Va-yavo Y'shayahu ha-navi el-melekh Chizkiyahu, and asked him, "What did ha-anashim ha-eleh say?  Where did they come from to you?"  Vayomer Chizkiyahu, "They have come from a country far from me, mi-Bavel."  4 Then he asked, "What have they seen in your bayit?"  Chizkiyahu answered, "They have seen all that is in my bayit.  There is nothing among my treasures that I have not shown them."

39:5 Va'yomer Y'shayahu el-Chizkiyahu, "Sh'ma d'var YHWH Tz'va'ot:  6 'Hinneh, yamim ba-im when all that is in your bayit, and that which avoteikha have stored up ad-ha-yom hazeh, will be carried to Bavel.  Nothing will be left,' amar YHWH.  7 'They will take away your banim who will issue from you, whom you shall father, and they will be eunuchs b'heikhal melekh Bavel.'"  8 Vayomer Chizkiyahu el-Y'shayahu, "D'var YHWH which you have spoken is good."  Vayomer, "Ki yih'yeh shalom v'emet in my days."

PEREQ ‏מ‎
CHAPTER 40

40:1 "Comfort, comfort my people," yomar Eloheikhem.
2 "Speak al-lev Y'rushalaim;
and call out to her
that her warfare is accomplished,
that her iniquity is pardoned,
that she has received mi-yad YHWH
double for all her chatta'im."

3 The voice of one who calls out,
"Ba-midbar, prepare derekh YHWH!
Make ba-aravah a highway l'Eloheinu.
4 Every valley shall be exalted,
and every mountain and hill shall be made low.
The uneven shall be made level,
and the rough places a plain.
5 And kavod YHWH shall be revealed,
and kol basar shall see it together;
ki pi YHWH diber."

6 The voice of one cries,
and says, "What shall I cry?"
"Kol ha-basar is like grass,
and all its glory is like the flower of ha-sadeh.
7 The grass withers, the flower fades,
ki ruach YHWH blows on it.
Surely the people is grass.
8 The grass withers, the flower fades;
u'd'var Eloheinu stands l'olam."

9 You who tell good news to Tziyon,
go up on a high mountain.
You who tell good news to Y'rushalaim,
lift up your voice with strength.
Lift it up.  Don't be afraid.
Say to the cities of Y'hudah,
"Hinneh, Eloheikhem!"
10 Hinneh, Adonai YHWH will come as a mighty one,
and his arm will rule for him.
Hinneh, his reward is with him,
and his recompense before him.
11 He will feed his flock like a shepherd.
He will gather the lambs in his arm,
and carry them in his bosom.
He will gently lead those who have their young.

12 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand,
and marked off shamayim with his span,
and calculated the dust of ha-aretz in a measure,
and weighed harim in scales,
and the hills in a balance?
13 Who has directed Ruach YHWH,
or has taught him as his counselor?
14 Who did he take counsel with,
and who instructed him,
and taught him in the path of mishpat,
and taught him knowledge,
and showed him the way of understanding?
15 Behold, goyim are like a drop in a bucket,
and are regarded as a speck of dust on a balance.
Behold, he lifts up the islands like a very little thing.
16 L'vanon is not sufficient to burn,
nor its animals sufficient for olah.
17 Kol ha-goyim are like nothing before him.
They are regarded by him as less than nothing, and vanity.

18 To whom then will you liken El?
Or what likeness will you compare to him?
19 A workman has cast an image,
and the goldsmith overlays it ba-zahav,
and casts chains of kesef for it.
20 He who is too impoverished for such a t'rumah chooses a tree that will not rot.
He seeks a skillful workman to set up an engraved image for him that will not be moved.

21 Haven't you known?
Haven't you heard, yet?
Haven't you been told me-rosh?
Haven't you understood from the foundations of ha-aretz?
22 It is he who sits above the circle of ha-aretz,
and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers;
who stretches out shamayim like a curtain,
and spreads them out ka-ohel to dwell in;
23 who brings princes to nothing;
who makes shoftei eretz void.

24 They are planted scarcely.
They are sown scarcely.
Their stock has scarcely taken root ba-aretz.
He merely blows on them, and they wither,
and the whirlwind takes them away as stubble.

25 "To whom then will you liken me?
Who is my equal?" yomar (the) Qadosh (one).
26 Lift up your eyes on high,
and see who has created these [stars],
who brings out their army by number.
He calls them all by name.
by the greatness of his might,
and because he is strong in power,
Not one is lacking.
27 Why do you say, Ya'akov,
and speak, Yisra'el,
"My derekh is hidden from YHWH,
and the justice due me is disregarded me-Elohai?"
28 Haven't you known?
Haven't you heard?
Elohei olam, YHWH,
The Creator of the ends of ha-aretz, doesn't faint.
He isn't weary.
His understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the weak.
He increases the strength of him who has no might.
30 Even the youths faint and get weary,
and the young men utterly fall;
31 But those who wait for YHWH will renew their strength.
They will mount up with wings like eagles.
They will run, and not be weary.
They will walk, and not faint.

PEREQ ‏מא‎
CHAPTER 41

41:1 "Keep silent before me, islands,
and let the peoples renew their strength.
Let them come near, then let them speak.
Let's meet together la-mishhpat.

2 Who has raised up one from the east
whom He calls in tzedek to His feet?
He hands over goyim to him,
and makes him rule over m'lakhim.
He gives them like the dust to his sword,
like the driven stubble to his bow.
3 He pursues them, passing on in shalom,
by a path his feet have not traveled before.
4 Who has worked and done it?
He who called ha-dorot me-rosh.
Ani YHWH, rishon
v'et acharonim ani hu
."

5 The islands have seen, and fear.
The ends of ha-aretz tremble.
They approach, and come.
6 Everyone helps his neighbor.
And to his brother, yomar "Chazak!"
7 So the carpenter encourages the goldsmith.
He who smoothes with the hammer encourages him who strikes the anvil,
saying of the soldering, "Tov hu;"
and he fastens it with nails, that it might not totter.

8 "V'attah, Yisra'el, my eved,
Ya'kov
whom I have chosen,
zera Avraham my friend,
9 You whom I have taken hold of from the ends of ha-aretz,
and called from its corners,
and said to you, 'You are my servant,
I have chosen you and not cast you away;'
10 Don't you be afraid, for I am with you.
Don't be dismayed, ki-ani Eloheikha.
I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you.
Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my tzedek.
11 Behold, all those who are incensed against you
will be disappointed and confounded.
Those who strive with you
will be like nothing, and shall perish.
12 You will seek them,
and won't find them;
those who contend with you
will be as nothing,
as a non-existent thing.
13 Ki ani YHWH Eloheikha,
will hold your right hand,
saying to you, 'Don't be afraid.
I will help you.'

14 Don't be afraid, you worm Ya'akov,
you men of Yisra'el.
I will help you," says YHWH,
"and your Redeemer, Qodesh Yisra'el.
15 Hinneh, I have made you into a threshing instrument,
with new sharp teeth.
You will thresh harim and beat them small,
and will make the hills like chaff.
16 You will winnow them, and the wind will carry them away,
and the whirlwind will scatter them.
You will rejoice in YHWH.
You will glory bi'K'dosh Yisra'el.

17 The poor and needy seek mayim,
and there is none.
Their tongue fails for thirst.
Ani, YHWH, will answer them.
Elohei Yisra'el will not forsake them.
18 I will open rivers on the bare heights,
and springs in the midst of the valleys.
I will make midbar a pool of mayim,
and the dry land springs of mayim.
19 Ba-midbar I will put cedar, acacia,
and myrtle, and trees of shemen.
I will set ba-aravah fir trees, pine, and box trees together ;
20 that they may see, know,
consider, and understand together,
ki yad-YHWH has done this,
u'K'dosh Yisra'el has created it.

21 Produce your cause," yomar YHWH.
"Bring forth your strong reasons," yomar Melekh Ya'akov.
22 "Let them announce, and declare to us what shall happen.
Declare the former things, what they are,
that we may consider them,
and know the latter end of them;
or show us things to come.
23 Declare the things that are to come hereafter,
that we may know ki elohim attem.
Yes, do good, or do evil,
that we may be dismayed and see it together.
24 Behold, you are of nothing,
and your work is of nothing.
He who chooses you is an abomination.

25 "I have raised up one from the north, and he has come;
from the rising of shemesh, one who calls on my name;
and he shall come on rulers as on mortar,
and as the potter treads clay.
26 Who has declared it me-rosh, that we may know?
And before, that we may say, 'He is right?'
Surely, there is no one who declares.
Surely, there is no one who shows.
Surely, there is no one who hears your utterances.
27 (I was) rishon (to say) l'Tziyyon, 'Hinneh, look at them;'
and I will give one who brings good news to Y'rushalaim.
28 I look, v'ein ish;
even among them there is no counselor
who, when I ask of them, can answer a davar.
29 Behold, all of them, their ma'asei are vanity and nothing.
Their molten images are wind and confusion.

CHAPTER 42

42:1 "Hinneh, my eved, whom I uphold;
my chosen, in whom my nefesh delights—
I have put my ruach on him.
He will bring mishpat la-goyim.
2 He will not shout, nor raise his voice,
nor cause it to be heard in the street.
3 He won't break a bruised reed.
He won't quench a dimly burning wick.
According to emet he shall bring mishpat.
4 He will not fail nor be discouraged,
until he has set ba-aretz mishpat,
and for his Torah the islands will wait."

5 Koh amar ha-El YHWH,
he who created ha-shamayim and stretched them out,
he who spread out ha-aretz and that which comes out of it,
he who gives n'shamah la-am
and ruach to those who walk in it.
6 "Ani, YHWH, have called you b'tzedek,
and will hold your hand, and will keep you,
and make you a b'rit am,
l'or goyim
;
7 to open the blind eyes,
to bring the prisoners out of the dungeon,
and those who sit in darkness out of the prison.
8 "Ani YHWH.  Hu sh'mo.
My kavod l'acher I will not give,
nor my praise to engraved images.
9 Hinneh, ha-rishonot have happened,
and I declare ha-rishonot.
Before they come up,
I tell you about them."

10 Shiru la-YHWH shir chadash,
and his praise from the end of ha-aretz,
you who go down to the sea, and all that is therein,
the islands and their inhabitants.
11 Let midbar and its cities raise their voices,
with the villages that Kedar inhabits.
Let the inhabitants of Sela sing.
Let them shout me-rosh harim!
12 Let them give la-YHWH kavod,
and declare his praise in the islands.
13 YHWH will go out ka-gibbor.
He will stir up zeal like a man of war.
He will raise a war cry.  Yes, he will shout aloud.
He will triumph over his enemies.

14 "I have been silent me-olam [a long time].
I have been quiet and restrained myself.
Now I will cry out like a travailing woman.
I will both gasp and pant.
15 I will destroy mountains and hills,
and dry up all their herbs.
I will make the rivers islands,
and will dry up the pools.
16 I will bring the blind
b'derekh that they don't know.
In paths that they don't know,
I will lead them.
I will make darkness light before them,
and crooked places straight.
I will do these things,
and I will not forsake them.
17 They shall be turned back and utterly put to shame,
who trust in graven images,
who say to molten images,
"You are our elohim."

18 "Hear, you deaf,
and look, you blind, that you may see.
19 Who is blind, but my eved?
Or who is as deaf as my malakh whom I send?
Who is as blind as he who is at peace,
or as blind as eved YHWH?
20 You see many things, but don't observe.
His ears are open, but he doesn't listen.
21 It pleased YHWH, for the sake of his tzedek,
to magnify Torah and make it honorable.
22 But this is a robbed and plundered people.
All of them are snared in holes,
and they are hidden in prisons.
They have become a prey, and no one delivers;
and a spoil, and no one says, 'Restore them!'
23 Who is there among you who will give ear to this?
Who will listen and hear for the time to come?
24 Who gave Ya'akov as plunder,
and Yisra'el to the robbers?
Didn't YHWH, he against whom we have sinned?
For they would not walk in his ways,
and they disobeyed his Torah.
25 Therefore he poured the fierceness of his anger on him,
and the strength of battle;
and it set him on fire all around, but he didn't know;
and it burned him, but he didn't take it to heart."

CHAPTER 43

43:1 But now koh amar YHWH,
he who created you, Ya'akov,
and he who formed you, Yisra'el:
"Don't be afraid, for I have redeemed you.
I have called you by your name.  You are mine.
2 When you pass ba-mayim, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they will not overflow you.
When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned,
and flame will not scorch you.
3 Ki ani YHWH, Eloheikha,
K'dosh Yisra'el
, your Moshia.
I have given Mitzrayim as your ransom,
Cush u'S'va in your place.
4 Since you have been precious and honored in my sight,
and I have loved you;
therefore I will give adam in your place,
and peoples instead of your nefesh.
5 Don't be afraid; for I am with you.
I will bring your zera from the east,
and gather you from the west.
6 I will tell the north, 'Give them up!'
and tell the south, Don't hold them back!
Bring my banim from far,
and my banot from the ends of ha-aretz
7 everyone who is called by my name,
and whom I have created for my kavod,
whom I have formed,
yes, whom I have made.'
8 Bring out the blind people who have eyes,
and the deaf who have ears.
9 Kol ha-goyim are gathered together,
and the peoples are assembled.
Who among them can declare this,
and show us former things?
Let them bring their witnesses, that they may be justified;
or let them hear, and say, "Emet."
10 "You are my witnesses," n'um YHWH,
"With my eved whom I have chosen;
that you may know and believe me,
and understand ki ani Hu.
Before me there was no God formed,
neither will there be after me.
11 Anochi, anochi YHWH;
and besides me there is no Moshia.
12 I have declared, I have saved, and I have shown;
and there was no strange (god) among you.
Therefore you are my edim,"
n'um YHWH, va-ani El.
13 Gam mi-yom ani Hu;
and there is no one who can deliver out of my hand.
I will work, and who can reverse it?"

14 Koh amar YHWH,
your Redeemer, K'dosh Yisra'el:
"For your sake, I have sent to Bavel,
and I will bring all of them down as fugitives,
even the Kasdim, in the ships of their rejoicing.
15 Ani YHWH, your K'dosh, the Creator of Yisra'el, your Melekh."
16 Koh amar YHWH, who makes ba-yam derekh,
and a path in the mighty mayim;
17 who brings forth the chariot and horse,
the army and the mighty man;
they lie down together, they shall not rise;
they are extinct, they are quenched like a wick:
18 "Don't remember the former things,
and don't consider the things of old.
19 Hinneh, I will do a new thing.
It springs forth now.
Don't you know it?
I will even make ba-midbar derekh,
and rivers in the desert.
20 The animals of ha-sadeh shall honor me,
the jackals and the ostriches;
because I give ba-midbar mayim and rivers in the desert,
to give drink to my people, my chosen,
21 the people which I formed for myself,
that they might set forth my praise.

22 Yet you have not called on me, Ya'acov;
but you have been weary of me, Yisra'el.
23 You have not brought me of your sheep for olot;
neither have you honored me with your sacrifices.
I have not burdened you with minchah,
nor wearied you with frankincense.
24 You have bought me no sweet cane with kesef,
nor have you filled me with the fat of your sacrifices;
but you have burdened me with your sins.
You have wearied me with your iniquities.

25 Anochi, anochi hu who blots out your transgressions for my own sake;
and I will not remember your chatta'im.
26 Put me in remembrance.
Let us plead together.
Set forth your case,
that you may be justified.
27 Avikha ha-rishon sinned,
and your teachers have transgressed against me.
28 Therefore I will profane the princes of the sanctuary;
and I will make Ya'akov a curse,
and Yisra'el an insult."

CHAPTER 44

44:1 Yet listen now, Ya'akov my eved,
v'Yisra'el
, whom I have chosen.
2 Koh amar YHWH who made you,
and formed you from the womb and will help you:
"Don't be afraid, Ya'akov my eved;
v'Y'shurun, whom I have chosen.
3 For I will pour mayim on the thirsty,
and streams on the dry ground.
I will pour my Ruach on your zera,
and my blessing on your offspring:
4 and they will spring up among grass,
as willows by streams of mayim.
5 Zeh omar, l'YHWH ani;
and another will be called b'shem Ya'acov;
and another will write with his hand 'la-YHWH,'
and honor himself b'shem Yisra'el."

6 Koh amar YHWH, melekh Yisra'el,
and his Redeemer, YHWH Tz'va'ot:
"Ani Rishon, va-Ani Acharon;
and besides me there is ein elohim.
7 Who is like me and who will call,
and will declare it and set it in order for me,
since I established am olam [the ancient people]?
Let them declare the things that are coming,
and that will happen.
8 Don't fear, neither be afraid.
Haven't I declared it to you long ago and shown it?
You are my edim.
Is there an Elohim besides me?
There is ein Tzur; I know not any."

44:9 Everyone who makes an engraved image is tohu.  The things that they delight in will not profit.  Their own edim don't see, nor know, that they may be disappointed.  10 Who has fashioned an el, or molds an image that is profitable for nothing?  11 Behold, all his fellows will be disappointed; and the workmen are me-adam.  Let them all be gathered together.  Let them stand up.  They will fear.  They will be put to shame together.

44:12 The blacksmith makes an axe, works in the coals, fashions it with hammers, and works it with his strong arm.  He is hungry, and his strength fails; he drinks no mayim, and is faint.  13 The carpenter stretches out a line.  He marks it out with chalk.  He shapes it with planes.  He marks it out with compasses, and shapes it like the figure of a man, with the beauty of a man, to reside in a bayit.  14 He cuts down cedars for himself, and takes the cypress and the oak, and strengthens for himself one among the trees of the forest.  He plants a fir tree, and the rain nourishes it.  15 Then it will be for a man to burn; and he takes some of it, and warms himself.  Yes, he burns it, and bakes lechem.  Yes, he makes an el, and worships it; he makes it an engraved image, and falls down to it.  16 He burns part of it in the fire.  With part of it, he eats basar.  He roasts a roast, and is satisfied.  Yes, he warms himself, and says, "Aha! I am warm.  I have seen the flame."  17 The rest of it he makes into an el, even his engraved image.  He bows down to it and worships, and prays to it, and says, "Deliver me; ki eli attah!"

44:18 They don't know, neither do they consider: for he has shut their eyes, that they can't see; and their hearts, that they can't understand.  19 No one thinks, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, "I have burned part of it b'esh.  Yes, I have also baked lechem on its coals.  I have roasted basar and eaten it.  Shall I make the rest of it into an abomination?  Shall I bow down to a tree trunk?"  20 He feeds on ashes.  A deceived heart has turned him aside; and he can't deliver his nefesh, nor say, "Isn't there a lie in my right hand?"

21 Remember these things, Ya'akov,
v'Yisra'el
, for you are my eved.
I have formed you; you are my eved.
Yisra'el
, you will not be forgotten by me.
22 I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, your transgressions,
and, as a cloud, your chatta'im.
Return to me, for I have redeemed you.

23 Sing, shamayim, for YHWH has done it!
Shout, you lower parts of eretz!
Break out into singing, harim,
forest, v'khol etz therein,
for YHWH has redeemed Ya'akov,
and will glorify himself b'Yisra'el.

24 Thus says YHWH, your Redeemer,
and he who formed you from the womb:
"I am YHWH, who makes all things;
who alone stretches out shamayim;
who spreads out ha-aretz by myself;
25 who frustrates the signs of the liars,
and makes diviners mad;
who turns chakhamim backward,
and makes their knowledge foolish;
26 who confirms the davar of his eved,
and performs the counsel of his malakhim;
who says l'Y'rushalaim, 'She will be inhabited;'
and of the cities of Y'hudah, 'They will be built,'
and 'I will raise up its waste places;'
27 who says to the deep, 'Be dry,'
and 'I will dry up your rivers;'
28 Who says of Koresh, 'He is my shepherd,
and shall perform all my pleasure,'
even saying of Y'rushalaim, 'You will be built;'
and (to the) Hekhal, 'You shall be founded.'"

CHAPTER 45

45:1 Koh amar YHWH to his mashiach, l'Khoresh,
whose right hand I have held,
to subdue goyim before him,
and strip m'lakhim of their armor;
to open the doors before him,
and the gates shall not be shut:
2 "I will go before you,
and make the rough places smooth.
I will break the doors of brass in pieces,
and cut apart the bars of iron.
3 I will give you the treasures of darkness,
and hidden riches of secret places,
that you may know that it is I, YHWH,
who call you by your name,
Elohei Yisra'el.
4 For the sake of Ya'akov my eved,
and Yisra'el my chosen,
I have called you by your name.
I have surnamed you, though you have not known me.
5 I am YHWH, v'ein od.
Besides me, ein Elohim.
I will equip you,
though you have not known me;
6 that they may know from the rising of shemesh,
and from the west, that there is none besides me.
Ani YHWH, v'ein od.
7 I form or, and create darkness.
I make shalom, and create ra.
Ani YHWH, who does kol eleh.
8 Drop down, shamayim, from above,
and let the skies pour down tzedek.
Let eretz open, that it may bring forth salvation,
and let it cause tz'dakah to spring up yachad.
Ani, YHWH, have created it.

9 Hoy to him who strives with his Maker—
a clay pot among the clay pots of adamah!
Shall the clay ask him who fashions it, 'What are you making?'
or your work, 'He has no hands?'
10 Hoy to him who says to a father, 'What have you become the father of?'
or to a mother, 'To what have you given birth?'"
11 Koh amar YHWH,
K'dosh Yisra'el
, and his Maker:
"You ask me about the things that are to come, concerning my banim,
and you command me concerning the work of my hands!
12 I have made eretz,
and created adam on it.
I, my hands, have stretched out shamayim;
and I have commanded all their army.
13 I have raised him up in righteousness,
and I will make straight all his ways.
He shall build my city,
and he shall let my exiles go free,
not for price nor reward,"
amar YHWH Tz'va'ot.

14 Koh amar YHWH:
"The labor of Mitzrayim, and the merchandise of Kush,
and the Sabeans, men of stature,
shall come over to you, and they shall be yours.
They will go after you.
They shall come over in chains; and they will bow down to you.
They will make supplication to you:
'Surely El is in you; v'ein od.
There is no other Elohim.
15 Most certainly attah El who hid yourself,
Elohei Yisra'el, Moshia.'"
16 They will be disappointed, yes, confounded, all of them.
Those who are makers of idols will go into confusion together.
17 Yisra'el will be saved by YHWH
with an everlasting salvation.
You will not be disappointed nor confounded
to ages everlasting.
18 Ki koh amarYHWH
who created ha-shamayim, hu ha-Elohim
who formed ha-aretz and made it,
who established it
and didn't create it a waste,
who formed it to be inhabited:
"Ani YHWH, v'ein od.
19 I have not spoken in secret,
in a place of eretz of darkness.
I didn't say to zera Ya'akov,
'Seek me in vain.'
Ani, YHWH, speak tzedek.
I declare things that are right.

20 "Assemble yourselves and come.
Draw near together,
you who have escaped from ha-goyim.
Those have no knowledge
who carry the wood of their engraved image,
and pray to an el
that can't save.
21 Declare and present it.
Yes, let them take counsel together.
Who has shown this from ancient time?
Who has declared it of old?
Haven't I, YHWH?
Ein od Elohim besides me
El tzadik u'Moshia
There is no one besides me.

22 "Look to me, and be saved
all the ends of aretz
ki ani El, v'ein od.
23 By myself have I sworn,
the davar has gone forth from my mouth in tz'dakah,
and will not return,
that to me every knee shall bow,
every tongue shall swear.

24 They will say of me,
'There is righteousness and strength only in YHWH.'"
Even to him shall men come;
and all those who were incensed against him shall be disappointed.
25 Ba-YHWH shall kol zera Yisra'el
be justified, and shall glory.

CHAPTER 46

46:1 Bel bows down, N'vo stoops;
their idols are la-ha-chayyah v'la-b'hemah:
the things that you carried about
are made a load, a burden to the weary animal.
2 They stoop, they bow down together;
they could not deliver the burden, but themselves are gone into captivity.

3 "Listen to me, beit Ya'akov,
and all the remnant of beit Yisra'el,
that have been borne by me from their birth,
that have been carried from the womb;
4 and even to old age ani hu,
and even to gray hairs will I carry you.
I have made, and I will bear;
yes, I will carry, and will deliver.
5 "To whom will you liken me, and make me equal,
and compare me, that we may be like?
6 Some pour out zahav from the bag,
and weigh kesef in the balance.
They hire a goldsmith, and he makes it an el.
They fall down—yes, they worship.
7 They bear it on the shoulder, they carry it,
and set it in its place, and it stands,
from its place it shall not move:
yes, one may cry to it, yet it can not answer,
nor save him out of his trouble.
8 "Remember this, and stand as men;
bring it again to mind, you transgressors.
9 Remember rishonot me-olam:
ki Anochi El, v'ein od;
Elohim, and there is none like me;
10 declaring the end from the beginning,
and from ancient times things that are not yet done;
saying, My counsel shall stand,
and I will do all my pleasure;
11 calling a ravenous bird from the east,
the man of my counsel me-eretz afar;
yes, I have spoken, I will also bring it to pass;
I have purposed, I will also do it.

12 Listen to me, you stout-hearted,
who are far mi-tz'dakah:
13 I bring near my tzedek, it shall not be far off,
and my salvation shall not wait;
and I will place salvation b' Tziyyon
for Yisra'el my glory.

CHAPTER 47

47:1 "Come down, and sit in the dust,
virgin bat Bavel;
sit la-aretz ein kisseh,
bat Kasdim
:
for you shall no more be called tender and delicate.
2 Take the millstones, and grind meal;
remove your veil,
strip off the train, uncover the leg,
pass through the rivers.
3 Your nakedness shall be uncovered,
yes, your shame shall be seen:
I will take vengeance,
and will spare no man."
4 Our Redeemer, YHWH Tz'va'ot sh'mo,
K'dosh Yisra'el
.

5 "Sit in silence, and go into darkness,
bat Kasdim;
for you shall no more be called
the mistress of mamlakhot.
6 I was angry with my people,
I profaned my inheritance,
and gave them into your hand:
you showed them no mercy;
al-zaqen
you have very heavily laid your yoke.
7 You said, I shall be mistress forever;
so that you did not lay these things to your heart,
neither did remember the latter end of it.

8 "Now therefore hear this, you who are given to pleasures,
who sit securely,
who say in your heart,
I am, and there is none else besides me;
I shall not sit as a widow,
neither shall I know the loss of children:
9 but these two things shall come to you
in a moment b'yom echad,
the loss of children, and widowhood;
in their full measure shall they come on you,
in the multitude of your sorceries,
and the great abundance of your enchantments.

10 For you have trusted in your wickedness;
you have said, No one sees me;
your chakham and your knowledge,
it has perverted you,
and you have said in your heart,
I am, and there is none else besides me.
11 Therefore evil will come on you;
you won't know its origin:
and mischief will fall on you;
you will not be able to appease it:
and desolation shall come on you suddenly,
which you don't know.

12 "Stand now with your enchantments,
and with the multitude of your sorceries,
in which you have labored from your youth;
if so be you shall be able to profit,
perhaps you may cause trembling.
13 You are wearied in the multitude of your counsels:
let them now save you,
the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators,
stand up and save you from the things that shall come on you.

14 Hinneh, they shall be as stubble;
esh shall burn them;
they shall not deliver themselves
from the power of the flame:
it shall not be a coal to warm at,
nor a fire to sit before.
15 Thus shall the things be to you in which you have labored:
those who have trafficked with you from your youth
shall wander everyone to his quarter;
there shall be none to save you.

CHAPTER 48

48:1 "Hear this, beit Ya'akov,
you who are called b'shem Yisra'el,
and have come forth out of the waters of Y'hudah;
who swear b'shem YHWH,
and make mention of Elohei Yisra'el,
lo-v'emet, v'lo vitz'dakah
.
2 (for they call themselves me-ir ha-kodesh,
and stay themselves al-Elohei Yisra'el;
YHWH Tz'va'ot sh'mo):

3 I have declared ha-rishonot from of old;
yes, they went forth out of my mouth, and I showed them:
suddenly I did them, and they happened.
4 Because I knew that you are obstinate,
and your neck is an iron sinew,
and your brow brass;
5 therefore I have declared it to you from of old;
before it came to pass I showed it to you;
lest you should say, 'My idol has done them,
and my engraved image, and my molten image, has commanded them.'

6 You have heard it; see all this;
and you, will you not declare it?
"I have shown you chadashot from this time,
even hidden things, which you have not known.
7 They are created now, and not from of old;
and before this day you didn't hear them;
lest you should say, 'Hinneh, I knew them.'
8 Yes, you didn't hear; yes, you didn't know;
yes, from of old your ear was not opened:
for I knew that you did deal very treacherously,
and you were called a transgressor from the womb.

9 For my name's sake will I defer my anger,
and for my praise will I refrain for you,
that I not cut you off.
10 Behold, I have refined you, but not as kesef;
I have chosen you in the furnace of affliction.
11 For my own sake, for my own sake, will I do it;
for how should my name be profaned?
and my kavod I will not give to another.

12 "Listen to me, Ya'akov,
and Yisra'el my called:
Ani hu; ani rishon,
also ani acharon.
13 Yes, my hand has laid the foundation of eretz,
and my right hand has spread out shamayim:
when I call to them, they stand up together.

14 "Assemble yourselves, all you, and hear;
who among them has declared these things?
He whom YHWH loves
shall perform his pleasure b'Vavel,
and his arm shall be on Kasdim.
15 I, I have spoken; yes, I have called him;
I have brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous.
16 "Come near to me and hear this:
"Ma-rosh I have not spoken in secret;
from the time that it was, sham ani."
Now Adonai YHWH has sent me, with his Ruach.

17 Koh amar YHWH,
your Redeemer, K'dosh Yisra'el:
Ani YHWH, Eloheikha,
who teaches you to profit,
who leads you b'derekh that you should go.
18 Oh that you had listened to my mitzvot!
then your shalom would have been like a river,
and your tz'dakah like the waves of ha-yam:
19 your zera also had been as the sand,
and the offspring of your belly like its grains:
his name would not be cut off
nor destroyed from before me.

20 Go forth mi-Bavel, flee from Kasdim;
with a voice of singing declare, tell this,
utter it even to the end of ha-aretz:
say, YHWH has redeemed Ya'akov his eved.
21 They didn't thirst when he led them through ha-aravot;
he caused mayim to flow out of the rock for them;
he split the rock also, and mayim gushed out.
22 "Ein shalom," amar YHWH, "for the wicked."

CHAPTER 49

49:1 Listen, islands, to me; and listen, you peoples, from far:
YHWH has called me from the womb;
from the bowels of my mother has he made mention of my name:
2 and he has made my mouth like a sharp sword;
in the shadow of his hand has he hid me:
and he has made me a polished shaft;
in his quiver has he kept me close:
3 Vayomer to me, "You are my eved;
Yisra;el, in whom I will be glorified."
4 But I said, "I have labored in vain,
I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity;
yet surely the mishpat due to me is with YHWH,
and my reward with my Eloha."

5 Now amar YHWH
who formed me from the womb to be his eved,
to bring Ya'akov again to him,
and that Yisra'el be gathered to him
(for I am honorable in the eyes of YHWH,
and my Eloha is become my strength);
6 vayomer,
"It is too light a thing that you should be my eved
to raise up the tribes of Ya'akov,
and to restore the preserved of Yisra'el:
I will also give you as on or goyim,
that you may be yeshuati to the end of ha-aretz."

7 Koh amar YHWH,
the Redeemer of Yisra'el, and his Kadosh,
to despised nefesh, to him abhorred by goy,
to an eved of rulers:
"M'lakhim shall see and arise;
princes, and they shall worship;
because of YHWH asher ne'eman,
K'dosh Yisra'el
, who has chosen you."

8 Koh amar YHWH,
"In an acceptable time have I answered you,
u'v'yom yeshuah have I helped you;
and I will preserve you, and give you
for a b'rit am,
to raise up eretz,
to make them inherit the desolate heritage:
9 saying to those who are bound, 'Come out!';
to those who are in darkness, 'Show yourselves!'
"They shall feed in the ways,
and on all bare heights shall be their pasture.
10 They shall not hunger nor thirst;
neither shall the heat nor shemesh strike them:
for he who has mercy on them will lead them,
even by springs of mayim he will guide them.
11 I will make all my harim a way,
and my highways shall be exalted.
12 Behold, these shall come from far;
and behold, these from the north and from the west;
and these me-eretz Sinim."
13 Sing, shamayim; and be joyful, aretz;
and break forth into singing, harim:
for YHWH has comforted his people,
and will have compassion on his afflicted.
14 Vatomer Tziyyon, "YHWH has forsaken me,
va-Adonai has forgotten me."
15 "Can an ishshah forget her sucking child,
that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb?
Yes, these may forget,
yet I will not forget you!
16 Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;
your walls are continually before me.
17 Your banim make haste;
your destroyers and those who made you waste shall go forth from you.
18 Lift up your eyes all around, and see:
all these gather themselves together, and come to you.
Chai ani, n'um YHWH,
you shall surely clothe yourself with them all as with an ornament,
and gird yourself with them, like a bride.

19 "For, as for your waste and your desolate places,
v'eretz that has been destroyed,
surely now you shall be too small for the inhabitants,
and those who swallowed you up shall be far away.
20 The banim of your bereavement
shall yet say in your ears,
Ha-maqom is too narrow for me;
come near to me that I may dwell.
21 Then you will say in your heart,
'Who has conceived these for me,
seeing I have been bereaved of my children,
and am solitary, an exile,
and wandering back and forth?
Who has brought up these?
Behold, I was left alone;
these, where were they?'"
22 Koh amar Adonai YHWH,
"Hinneh, I will lift up my hand el-goyim,
and set up my banner el-amim;
and they shall bring your sons in their bosom,
and your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders.
23 M'lakhim shall be your nursing fathers,
and their queens your nursing mothers:
they shall bow down to you with their faces to eretz,
and lick the dust of your feet;
and you shall know ki ani YHWH;
and those who wait for me shall not be disappointed."

24 Shall the prey be taken mi-gibbor,
or the lawful captives be delivered?
25 Ki-kho amar YHWH,
"Even the captives of gibbor shall be taken away,
and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered;
for I will contend with him who contends with you,
and I will save your banim.
26 I will feed those who oppress you with their own basar;
and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine:
and all basar shall know
ki ani, YHWH, am your Moshiah,
and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Ya'akov."

CHAPTER 50

50:1 Koh amar YHWH,
"Where is the bill of your mother's divorce,
with which I have put her away?
or which of my creditors is it
to whom I have sold you?
Behold, for your iniquities were you sold,
and for your transgressions was your mother put away.
2 Why, when I came, was there ein ish?
when I called, was there none to answer?
Is my hand shortened at all, that it can't redeem?
or have I no power to deliver?
Behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea,
I make the rivers a midbar:
their fish stink, because there is ein mayim,
and die for thirst.
3 I clothe shamayim with blackness,
and I make sackcloth their covering."

4 Adonai YHWH has given me
the tongue of those who are taught,
that I may know how to sustain with davar
him who is weary:
he wakens ba-boqer ba-boqer,
he wakens my ear
to hear as those who are taught.
5 Adonai YHWH has opened my ear,
and I was not rebellious,
neither turned away backward.
6 I gave my back to the strikers,
and my cheeks to those who plucked off the hair;
I didn't hide my face
from shame and spitting.

7 Adonai YHWH will help me;
therefore I have not been confounded:
therefore have I set my face like a flint,
and I know that I shall not be disappointed.
8 He is near who justifies me;
who will bring charges against me?
Let us stand up together:
who is my adversary?
Let him come near to me.
9 Behold, Adonai YHWH will help me;
who is he who shall condemn me?
Behold, all they shall wax old as a garment,
the moth shall eat them up.

10 Who is among you who fears YHWH,
who obeys qol avdo?
He who walks in darkness,
and has no light,
let him trust b'shem YHWH,
and rely on his Eloha.
11 Behold, all you who kindle a fire,
who gird yourselves about with torches;
walk you in the flame of your fire,
and among the brands that you have kindled.
You shall have this of my hand;
you shall lie down in sorrow.

CHAPTER 51

51:1 "Listen to me, you who follow after tzedek,
you who seek YHWH:
look to the rock whence you were cut,
and to the hold of the pit whence you were dug.
2 Look el-Avraham avikhem,
v'el-Sarah
who bore you;
ki (when he was but) echad I called him,
and I blessed him, and made him many.
3 For YHWH has comforted Tziyyon;
he has comforted all her waste places,
and has made her midbar like Eden,
and her aravah like gan YHWH;
joy and simchah shall be found therein,
thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.

4 "Attend to me, my people;
and give ear to me, my nation:
ki-torah shall go forth from me,
and I will establish my mishpat for or amim.
5 My righteousness is near,
my salvation is gone forth,
and my arms shall judge the peoples;
the islands shall wait for me,
and on my arm shall they trust.
6 Lift up your eyes la-shamayim,
and look el-ha-aretz beneath;
ki-shamayim shall vanish away like smoke,
and ha-aretz shall wax old like a garment;
and those who dwell therein shall die in like manner:
but yeshuati shall be l'olam,
and my tzedek shall not be abolished.

7 "Listen to me, you who know tzedek,
the people in whose heart is my Torah;
don't fear the reproach of men,
neither be dismayed at their insults.
8 For the moth shall eat them up like a garment,
and the worm shall eat them like wool;
but my tzedek shall be l'olam,
and yeshuati l'dor dorot."

9 Awake, awake, put on strength, arm of YHWH;
awake, as in the days of old,
dorot olamim.
Isn't it you who cut Rahav in pieces,
who pierced the tannin?
10 Isn't it you who dried up the sea
the waters of the great deep
who made the depths of the sea derekh
for the redeemed to pass over?
11 The ransomed of YHWH shall return,
and come with singing to Tziyyon;
v'simchat olam shall be on their heads:
they shall obtain gladness v'simchah;
and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

12 "Anochi, anochi hu who comforts you:
who are you, that you are afraid of man who shall die,
u'mi-ben-adam who shall be made as grass;
13 and have forgotten YHWH your Maker,
who stretched forth shamayim,
and laid the foundations of aretz;
and fear continually kol ha-yom
because of the fury of the oppressor,
when he makes ready to destroy?
and where is the fury of the oppressor?
14 The captive exile shall speedily be freed;
and he shall not die and go down into the pit,
neither shall his lechem fail.
15 V'anochi YHWH Eloheikha,
who stirs up ha-yam, so that its waves roar:
YHWH Tz'va'ot sh'mo.
16 I have put my d'varim in your mouth,
and have covered you in the shadow of my hand,
that I may plant shamayim,
and lay the foundations of aretz, v'lemor l'Tziyyon, 'Ami attah.'"

17 Awake, awake, stand up, Y'rushalaim,
that have drunk mi-yad YHWH
the cup of his wrath;
you have drunken the bowl of the cup of staggering, and drained it.
18 There is none to guide her
mi-kol banim whom she has brought forth;
neither is there any who takes her by the hand
mi-kol banim that she has brought up.
19 These two things have happened to you.
Who will bemoan you?
Desolation and destruction, and the famine and the sword;
how shall I comfort you?
20 Your banim have fainted,
they lie at the head of all the streets,
as an antelope in a net;
they are full of the wrath of YHWH,
the rebuke of your Elohim.

21 Therefore hear now this, you afflicted,
and drunken, v'lo mi-yayin:
22 Koh amar your Adon, YHWH,
v'Eloheikha who pleads the cause of his people,
"Hinneh, I have taken out of your hand
the cup of staggering,
even the bowl of the cup of my wrath;
you shall no more drink it again:
23 and I will put it into the hand of those who afflict you,
who have said to your nefesh,
'Bow down, that we may walk over you;'
and you have laid your back ka-aretz,
and as the street, to those who walk over."

CHAPTER 52

52:1 Awake, awake, put on your strength, Tziyyon;
put on your beautiful garments,
Y'rushalaim, ir ha-Kodesh:
for henceforth there shall no more come into you
the uncircumcised and tame.
2 Shake yourself from the dust; arise,
sit on your throne, Y'rushalaimI:
loose yourself from the bonds of your neck,
captive bat Tziyyon.

52:3 For thus says YHWH, "You were sold for nothing; and you shall be redeemed without money."  4Ki koh amar Adonai YHWH, "My people went down b'rishonah into Mitzrayim to sojourn there: v'Ashshur has oppressed them without cause. 5  "Now therefore, what do I here," says YHWH, "seeing that my people are taken away for nothing? those who rule over them mock," says YHWH, "and my name continually kol ha-yom is blasphemed. 6  Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know ba-yom ha-hu that I am he who does speak; Hinneni."

7 How beautiful al-he-harim
are the feet of him who brings good news,
who publishes shalom, who brings good news of good,
who publishes y'shuah,
who says l'Tziyyon, "Your Elohim reigns!"
8 The voice of your watchmen! they lift up the voice,
together do they sing;
for they shall see eye to eye,
when YHWH returns to Tziyyon
9 Break forth into joy, sing together,
you waste places of Y'rushalaim;
for YHWH has comforted his people,
he has redeemed Y'rushalaim.
10 YHWH has made bare his holy arm
in the eyes of kol ha-goyim;
and all the ends of aretz have seen
y'shu'at Eloheinu.

11 Depart, depart, go out from there,
touch no tame (thing)!
Go out of the midst of her!  Cleanse yourselves,
you who bear the vessels of YHWH.
12 For you shall not go out in haste,
neither shall you go by flight:
for YHWH will go before you;
and Elohei Yisra'el will be your rear guard.

13 Hinneh, my eved shall deal wisely,
he shall be exalted and lifted up,
and shall be very high.
14 Like as many were astonished at you
(his appearance was marred more than any man,
and his form more than b'nei adam),
15 so shall he sprinkle goyim rabbim;
m'lakhim shall shut their mouths at him:
for that which had not been told them shall they see;
and that which they had not heard shall they understand.

PEREQ ‏נג‎
CHAPTER 53

53:1 Who has believed our report?
To whom has the arm of YHWH been revealed?
2 For he grew up before him as a tender plant,
and as a root out of dry eretz.
He has no form nor comeliness, when we see him;
there is no beauty that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected by ishim;
a man of suffering,and acquainted with disease.
He was despised as one from whom men hide their face;
and we didn't respect him.

4 Surely he has borne our sickness,
and carried our suffering;
yet we considered him plagued,
struck by Elohim, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions.
He was crushed for our iniquities.
The punishment that brought our shalom was on him;
and by his wounds we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray.
Everyone has turned to his own way;
va-YHWH has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed, yet he was afflicted he didn't open his mouth.
As a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
and as a sheep that before its shearers is mute,
so he didn't open his mouth.
8 He was taken away by oppression and mishpat;
and as for his generation,
who considered that he was cut off me-eretz chayyim
and stricken for the disobedience of my people?
9 They made his grave with the wicked,
and with the rich in his death,
although he had done no violence,
neither was any deceit in his mouth.
10 Yet it pleased YHWH to crush him.
He has caused him to suffer.
When you make his nefesh an offering for sin,
he shall see his zera.  He shall prolong yamim,
and the pleasure of YHWH shall prosper in his hand.
11 After the suffering of his nefesh,
he will see the light[♦] and be satisfied.
My righteous servant will justify many by the knowledge of himself;
and he will bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore will I divide him a portion ba-rabbim,
and he shall divide the spoil with the strong;
because he poured out his nefesh to death,
and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet he bore chet rabbim,
and made intercession for the transgressors.

CHAPTER 54

54:1 "Sing, barren, you who didn't bear;
break forth into singing, and cry aloud,
you who did not travail (with child):
for more are the banim of the desolate
than the banim of the married wife," says YHWH.
2 "Enlarge ha-maqom of your ohel,
and let them stretch forth the curtains of your habitations;
don't spare: lengthen your cords,
and strengthen your stakes.
3 For you shall spread out on the right hand and on the left;
and your zera shall possess the goyim,
and make the desolate cities to be inhabited.

4 "Don't be afraid; for you shall not be ashamed:
neither be confounded; for you shall not be disappointed:
for you shall forget the shame of your youth;
and the reproach of your widowhood you shall remember no more.
5 For your Maker is your ba'al;
YHWH Tz'va'ot sh'mo:
and (the) K'dosh (one of) Yisra'el is your Redeemer;
Elohei kol ha-aretz shall he be called.
6 For YHWH has called you
as an ishshah forsaken and grieved in ruach,
an ishshah of youth, when she is cast off,"
says your Eloha.
7 "For a small moment have I forsaken you;
but with great mercies will I gather you.
8 In overflowing wrath for a moment
I hid my face from you;
but with chesed olam will I have mercy on you,"
says YHWH your Redeemer.

9 "For this is like the waters of Noach to me;
for as I have sworn that the waters of Noach
shall no more go al-ha-aretz,
so have I sworn that I will not be angry with you,
nor rebuke you.
10 Ki he-harim may depart,
and the hills be removed;
but my chesed shall not depart from you,
neither shall my b'rit of shalom be removed,"
says YHWH who has mercy on you.

11 "You afflicted, tossed with storms, and not comforted,
behold, I will set your stones in beautiful colors,
and lay your foundations with sapphires.
12 I will make your pinnacles of rubies,
and your gates of sparkling jewels,
and all your walls of precious stones.
13 All your banim shall be taught of YHWH;
and great shall be the shalom of your banim.
14 Bi'tz'dakah you shall be established:
you shall be far from oppression, for you shall not be afraid;
and from terror, for it shall not come near you.
15 Behold, they may gather together,
but not by me:
whoever shall gather together against you
shall fall because of you.
16 "Hinneh, I have created the smith
who blows the fire of coals,
and brings forth a weapon for his work;
and I have created the waster to destroy.
17 No weapon that is formed against you will prevail;
and you will condemn every tongue that rises against you l'mishpat.
This is the heritage of the avadim of YHWH,
and their tz'dakah which is of me," n'um YHWH.

CHAPTER 55

55:1 "Hoi, everyone who thirsts, la-mayim!
Come, he who has no kesef,
come, buy, and eat!
Yes, come, buy yayin and milk
without kesef and without price.
2 Why do you spend kesef for that which is not lechem?
and your labor for that which doesn't satisfy?
listen diligently to me, and eat (that which is) good,
and let your nefesh delight itself in fatness.
3 Turn your ear, and come to me;
hear, and your nefesh shall live:
and I will make with you a b'rit olam,
the sure chasdei David.
4 Behold, I have given him for an ed to the peoples,
a leader and commander to the peoples.
5 Behold, you shall call a goy that you don't know;
and a goy that didn't know you shall run to you,
because of YHWH Eloheikha, and for (the) Kadosh (one of) Yisra'el; for he has glorified you."

6 Seek YHWH while he may be found;
call you on him while he is near:
7 let the wicked forsake his way,
and the unrighteous man his thoughts;
and let him return to YHWH, and he will have mercy on him;
and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
8 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways," says YHWH.
9 "For as shamayim are higher than aretz,
so are my ways higher than your ways,
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
10 For as the rain comes down and the snow min-ha-shamayim,
and doesn't return there, but waters ha-aretz,
and makes it bring forth and bud,
and gives zera to the sower and lechem to the eater;
11 so shall my davar be that goes forth out of my mouth:
it shall not return to me void,
but it shall accomplish that which I please,
and it shall prosper in the thing I sent it to do.

12 For you shall go out with simchah,
and be led forth with shalom:
he-harim and the hills before you
shall break forth into singing;
and all the trees of ha-sadeh shall clap their hands.
13 Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir;
and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle:
and it shall be to YHWH l'shem, [a memorial]
l'ot olam that shall not be cut off."

CHAPTER 56

56:1 Koh amar YHWH,
"Keep mishpat, and do tz'dakah;
for my salvation [yeshuahti] is near to come,
and my tzedek to be revealed.
2 Blessed is the man who does this,
and ben adam who holds it fast;
who keeps Shabbat from profaning it,
and keeps his hand from doing kol-ra."

3 Neither let the foreigner, who has joined himself to YHWH, speak, saying,
"YHWH will surely separate me from his people;"
neither let the eunuch say,
"Behold, I am a dry tree."
4 Ki-khoh amar YHWH,
"To the eunuchs who keep my Shabbatot,
and choose the things that please me,
and hold fast my b'rit:
5 to them I will give in my bayit and within my walls
yad va-shem[♦]
better than banim and banot;
I will give them a shem olam,
that shall not be cut off.

6 Also the foreigners who join themselves to YHWH,
to minister to him, and to love shem YHWH,
to be his avadim,
everyone who keeps Shabbat from profaning it,
and holds fast my b'rit;
7 these will I bring to my har kadosh,
and make them joyful b'veit t'fillati:
their olot and their sacrifices
shall be accepted on my mizbeach;
for my bayit shall be called a Beit T'fillah
l'khol amim
."
8 N'um Adonai YHWH,
who gathers the outcasts of Yisra'el,
"Yet will I gather others to him,
besides his own who are gathered."

9 All you animals of the field, come to devour,
yes, all you animals in the forest.
10 His watchmen are blind,
they are all without knowledge;
they are all mute dogs,
they can't bark;
dreaming, lying down,
loving to slumber.
11 Yes, the dogs are strong of nefesh [greedy],
they can never have enough;
and these are shepherds who can't understand:
they have all turned to their own way,
each one to his gain, from every quarter.
12 "Come," say they, "I will get yayin,
and we will fill ourselves with strong drink;
and tomorrow shall be as this day,
a day great beyond measure."

CHAPTER 57

57:1 Ha-tzaddik perishes,
v'ein ish lays it to heart;
v'anshei chesed are taken away,
none considering
that ha-tzaddik is taken away from ha-ra'ah (to come).
2 He enters into shalom;
they rest in their beds,
each one who walks in his uprightness.
3 "But draw near here,
you banim of the sorceress,
the zera of the adulterer and the prostitute.
4 Against whom do you sport yourselves?
Against whom do you make a wide mouth,
and stick out your tongue?
Aren't you children of disobedience,
zera of falsehood,
5 you who inflame yourselves among the oaks,
under every green tree;
who kill ha-y'ladim in the valleys,
under the clefts of the rocks?
6 Among the smooth stones of the valley is your portion;
they, they are your lot;
you have even poured a nesekh to them.
You have offered a minchah.
Shall I be appeased for these things?
7 On a high and lofty mountain
you have set your bed;
there also you went up to offer zavach.
8 V'achar ha-delet v'ha-m'zuzah
you have set up your memorial:
for you have uncovered to someone besides me,
and have gone up;
you have enlarged your bed,
and you cut (a covenant) with them:
you loved their bed where you saw it.
9 You went la-melekh ha-shemen,
and did increase your perfumes,
and did send your ambassadors far off,
and debased yourself ad-sh'ol.
10 You were wearied with the length of your way;
yet you didn't say, 'It is in vain.'
You found a reviving of your strength;
therefore you weren't faint.

11 "Of whom have you been afraid and in fear,
that you lie,
and have not remembered me,
nor laid it to your heart?
Haven't I been silent me-olam,
and you don't fear me?
12 I will declare your tz'dakah; and as for your ma'asim,
they shall not profit you.
13 When you cry, let those who you have gathered deliver you;
but ruach shall take them,
a breath [or vanity] shall carry them all away:
but he who takes refuge in me shall possess eretz,
and shall inherit my har-kadosh."

14 He will say,
"Cast up, cast up, prepare darekh,
take up the stumbling-block mi-derekh of my people."
15 For thus says the high and lofty One
who inhabits eternity, Kadosh sh'mo: "I dwell in the high and holy place,
with him also who is of a contrite and humble ruach,
to revive the ruach of the humble,
and to revive the heart of the contrite.
16 For I will not contend forever,
neither will I be always angry;
for ruach would faint before me,
and those whom I have made.
17 For the iniquity of his covetousness was I angry,
and struck him; I hid my face and was angry;
and he went on backsliding b'derekh of his heart.
18 I have seen his ways, and will heal him:
I will lead him also, and restore comforts
to him and to his mourners.
19 I create the fruit of the lips:
Shalom, shalom, to him who is far off and to him who is near," amar YHWH;
"and I will heal them."
20 But the wicked are like the troubled sea;
for it can't rest,
and its waters cast up mire and dirt.
21 "Ein shalom," amar Elohai, "for the wicked."

CHAPTER 58

58:1 "Cry aloud, don't spare, lift up your voice ka-shofar,
and declare to my people their disobedience,
u'l'veit Ya'akov their sins.
2 Yet they seek me yom yom,
and delight to know my ways:
k'goi that did tz'dakah,
and didn't forsake mishpat Elohav,
they ask of me mishp'tei tzedek;
they delight to draw near to Elohim.
3 'Why have we fasted,' say they, 'and you don't see?
why have we afflicted our nefesh, and you take no knowledge?'
"Behold, in the day of your fast you find pleasure,
and exact all your labors.
4 Behold, you fast for strife and contention,
and to strike with the fist of wickedness:
you don't fast this day
so as to make your voice to be heard on high.
5 Is such the fast that I have chosen?
the day for a man to afflict his nefesh?
Is it to bow down his head as a rush,
and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him?
Will you call this a fast,
and an acceptable day to YHWH?

6 "Isn't this the fast that I have chosen:
to loose the bonds of wickedness,
to undo the bands of the yoke,
and to let the oppressed go free,
and that you break every yoke?
7 Isn't it to distribute your lechem to the hungry,
and that you bring the poor who are cast out to your bayit?
When you see the naked, that you cover him;
and that you not hide yourself from your own basar?
8 Then your light shall break forth ka-shachar,
and your healing shall spring forth speedily;
and your tz'dakah shall go before you;
k'vod YHWH shall be your rear guard.
9 Then you shall call, and YHWH will answer;
you shall cry, and he will say, 'Hinneni.' "If you take away from the midst of you the yoke,
the putting forth of the finger, and speaking wickedly;
10 and if you draw out your nefesh to the hungry,
and satisfy the afflicted nefesh:
then your light shall rise in darkness,
and your obscurity be as the noonday;
11 and YHWH will guide you continually,
and satisfy your nefesh in dry places,
and make strong your bones;
and you shall be like a watered garden,
and like a spring of mayim,
whose mayim don't fail.
12 Those who shall be of you shall build the old waste places;
you shall raise up the foundations dor-va-dor;
and you shall be called The repairer of the breach,
The restorer of paths to dwell in.

13 "If you turn away your foot mi-Shabbat,
from doing your pleasure on my Yom Kadosh;
and call la-Shabbat oneg,
and the holy of YHWH honorable;
and shall honor it, not doing your own ways,
nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words:
14 then you shall delight yourself in YHWH;
and I will make you to ride on the high places of aretz;
and I will feed you with the heritage of Ya'akov avikha:"
ki-pi YHWH diber.

CHAPTER 59

59:1 Behold, yad YHWH is not shortened, that it can't save;
neither his ear heavy, that it can't hear:
2 but your iniquities have separated
between you and your Elohim,
and your chatta'im have hidden his face from you,
so that he will not hear.
3 For your hands are defiled with blood,
and your fingers with iniquity;
your lips have spoken lies,
your tongue mutters wickedness.
4 None sues b'tzedek,
and none pleads be-emunah:
they trust in vanity, and speak lies;
they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.
5 They hatch adders' eggs,
and weave the spider's web:
he who eats of their eggs dies;
and that which is crushed breaks out into a viper.
6 Their webs shall not become garments,
neither shall they cover themselves with their ma'asim:
their ma'asim are ma'asim of iniquity,
and the act of chamas is in their hands.
7 Their feet run to evil,
and they make haste to shed innocent blood:
their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity;
desolation and destruction are in their paths.
8 Derekh shalom they don't know;
and there is no mishpat in their goings:
they have made them crooked paths;
whoever goes therein does not know shalom.

9 Therefore is mishpat far from us,
neither does tz'dakah overtake us:
we look for light, but, behold, darkness;
for brightness, but we walk in obscurity.
10 We grope for the wall like the blind;
yes, we grope as those who have no eyes:
we stumble at noonday as in the twilight;
among those who are lusty we are ka-metim.
11 We roar all like bears,
and moan sore ka-yonim:
we look for mishpat, but there is none;
for y'shuah, but it is far off from us.
12 For our transgressions are multiplied before you,
and our sins testify against us;
for our transgressions are with us,
and as for our iniquities, we know them:
13 transgressing and denying YHWH,
and turning away from following Eloheinu,
speaking oppression and revolt,
conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood.
14 Mishpat is turned away backward,
and tz'dakah stands afar off;
for emet is fallen in the street,
and uprightness can't enter.
15 Yes, emet is lacking;
and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey.

YHWH saw it, and it displeased him
ki-ein mishpat.
16 He saw ki-ein ish,
and wondered that there was no intercessor:
therefore his own arm brought salvation to him;
and his tzedek, it upheld him.
17 He put on tz'dakah as a breastplate,
and a helmet of y'shuah on his head;
and he put on garments of vengeance for clothing,
and was clad with zeal as a mantle.
18 According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay,
wrath to his adversaries, recompense to his enemies;
to the islands he will repay recompense.
19 So shall they fear shem YHWH from the west,
and his glory from the rising of the shemesh;
for he will come as a rushing stream,
which ruach YHWH drives.

20 "A Redeemer will come l'Tziyyon,
and to those who turn from disobedience b'Ya'akov," n'um YHWH.

59:21 "As for me, this is my b'rit with them," says YHWH.  "My Ruach who is on you, and my d'varim which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, nor out of the mouth of your zera, nor out of the mouth of the zera of your zera," says YHWH, "from henceforth v'ad olam."

CHAPTER 60

60:1 "Arise, shine; for your light is come,
u'kh'vod YHWH is risen on you.
2 Ki-hinneh, darkness shall cover eretz,
and gross darkness the peoples;
but YHWH will arise on you,
and his kavod shall be seen on you.
3 Goyim shall come to your light,
u'm'lakhim to the brightness of your rising.
4 "Lift up your eyes all around, and see:
they all gather themselves together, they come to you;
your banim shall come from far,
and your banot shall be carried in the arms.
5 Then you shall see and be radiant,
and your heart shall thrill and be enlarged;
because hamon yam shall be turned to you,
the wealth of goyim shall come to you.
6 The multitude of g'malim shall cover you,
the dromedaries of Midyan v'Efah;
all they from Sh'va shall come;
they shall bring zahav and frankincense,
and shall proclaim the praises of YHWH.
7 All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered together to you,
the rams of Nevayot shall minister to you;
they shall come up with acceptance on my mizbeach;
and I will glorify the bayit of my glory.

8 "Who are these who fly as a cloud,
and as the doves to their windows?
9 Surely the islands shall wait for me,
and the ships of Tarshish first,
to bring your banim from far,
their kesef and their zahav with them,
l'shem YHWH Elohayikh,
and for the Kadosh Yisra'el,
because he has glorified you.

10 "Foreigners shall build up your walls,
and their m'lakhim shall minister to you:
for in my wrath I struck you,
but in my favor have I had mercy on you.
11 Your gates also shall be open continually;
yomam va-lailah they shall not be shut;
that men may bring to you the wealth of goyim,
and their m'lakhim led captive.
12 For that goy v'ha-mamlakhah
that will not serve you shall perish;
v'ha-goyim shall be utterly wasted.
13 "K'vod ha-L'vanon shall come to you,
the fir tree, the pine, and the box tree together,
to beautify the maqom of my Mikdash; and I will make the maqom of my feet glorious.
14 The banim of those who afflicted you
shall come bending to you;
and all those who despised you
shall bow themselves down at the soles of your feet;
and they shall call you Ir YHWH,
Tziyyon K'dosh Yisra'el.

15 "Whereas you have been forsaken and hated,
so that no man passed through you,
I will make you an eternal excellency,
a joy dor va-dor.
16 You shall also suck the milk of goyim,
and shall nurse from breasts of m'lakhim;
and you shall know that ani, YHWH, am your Moshia,
and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Ya'akov.

17 For n'choshet I will bring zahav,
and for iron I will bring kesef,
and for wood n'choshet,
and for stones iron.
I will also make your officers shalom,
and tz'dakah your ruler.
18 Chamas shall no more be heard in your aretz,
desolation nor destruction within your borders;
but you shall call your walls Y'shuah,
and your gates T'hillah.

19 Ha-shemesh shall be no more
your light by day;
neither for brightness shall the moon
give light to you:
but YHWH will be to you an or olam,
and your Elohim your glory.
20 Your shemesh shall no more go down,
neither shall your moon withdraw itself;
for YHWH will be your or olam,
and the days of your mourning shall be ended.
21 Your people also shall be all tzaddikim;
they shall inherit the land l'olam,
the branch of my planting, the work of my hands,
that I may be glorified.
22 Ha-katon shall become a thousand,
and the small one a strong goy;
Ani, YHWH,
will hasten it in its time."

PEREQ ‏סא‎
CHAPTER 61

61:1 Ruach Adonai YHWH is on me;
because YHWH has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the humble.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and release to those who are bound;
2 to proclaim the year of YHWH's favor,[♦]
and the day of vengeance l'Eloheinu;
to comfort all who mourn;
3 to appoint to those who mourn in Tziyyon,
to give to them a garland for ashes,
shemen of joy for mourning,
the garment of praise for ruach of heaviness;
that they may be called trees of ha-tzedek,
the planting of YHWH, that he may be glorified.
4 They shall build the old wastes,
they shall raise up the former desolations,
and they shall repair the waste cities,
the desolations of dor va-dor.

5 Strangers shall stand and feed your flocks,
and foreigners shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers.
6 But you shall be named kohanei YHWH;
men will call you the ministers of Eloheinu:
you will eat the wealth of goyim,
and you will boast in their kavod.
7 Instead of your shame you shall have double;
and instead of dishonor they shall rejoice in their portion:
therefore in their aretz they shall possess double;
simchat olam shall be to them.

8 "Ki ani, YHWH, love mishpat,
I hate robbery with iniquity;
and I will give them their recompense be-emet,
u'v'rit olam I will make with them.
9 Their z'ra'im shall be known ba-goyim,
and their offspring among ha-amim;
all who see them shall acknowledge them,
that they are zera which YHWH has blessed."
10 I will greatly rejoice in YHWH,
my nefesh shall be joyful b'Elohai;
for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation,
he has covered me with the robe of tz'dakah,
as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland,
and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
11 For as ha-aretz brings forth its bud,
and as the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth;
so Adonai YHWH will cause tz'dakah and praise
to spring forth before kol ha-goyim.

PEREQ ‏סב‎
CHAPTER 62

62:1 For the sake of Tziyyon I will not keep silent,
and for the sake of Y'rushalaim I will not rest,
until her tzedek goes forth as brightness,
and her yeshuah as a lamp that burns.
2 Goyim shall see your tzedek,
v'khol m'lakhim your kavod,
and you shall be called by a shem chadash,
asher pi YHWH shall designate.
3 You shall also be a crown of beauty b'yad YHWH,
and a royal diadem in the hand of your Elohim.
4 You shall no more be termed Forsaken;
neither shall your land any more be termed Desolate:
but you shall be called Chefzi-vah [My Delight is in her],
and your land B'ulah [Married];
for YHWH delights in you,
and your aretz shall be married.
5 For as a young man marries a virgin,
so your sons shall marry you;
and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,
so Eloheikha will rejoice over you.

6 Upon your walls, Y'rushalaim,
I have set watchmen.
Kol ha-yom v'khol ha-lailah,
they shall not keep silent:
you who call on YHWH,
take no rest,
7 and give him no rest,
until he establishes, and until he makes Y'rushalaim
a praise ba-aretz.
8 YHWH has sworn by his right hand,
and by the arm of his strength,
"Surely I will no more give your grain
to be food for your enemies;
and foreigners shall not drink your tirosh,
for which you have labored:
9 but those who have garnered it shall eat it,
and praise YHWH;
and those who have gathered it
shall drink it in the courts of my Holy Place."
10 Go through, go through the gates!
Prepare derekh ha-am!
Cast up, cast up the highway!
Gather out the stones!
Lift up a banner al-ha-amim.
11 Hinneh, YHWH has proclaimed
to the end of ha-aretz,
"Say to bat Tziyyon,
'Hinneh, your salvation comes.
Behold, his reward is with him,
and his recompense before him.'"
12 They shall call them Am ha-Kodesh,
The redeemed of YHWH:
and you shall be called Sought out,
A city not forsaken.

PEREQ ‏סג‎
CHAPTER 63

63:1 Mi-zeh who comes me-Edom,
with dyed garments mi-Botzrah?
this who is glorious in his clothing,
marching in the greatness of his strength?

"It is I who speak bi'tz'dakah,
mighty to save."

2 Why are you adom in your clothing,
and your garments like him who treads in the wine vat?

3 "I have trodden the wine press alone;
and of the peoples there was ein-ish with me:
yes, I trod them in my anger,
and trampled them in my wrath;
and their lifeblood is sprinkled on my garments,
and I have stained all my clothing.
4 For the day of vengeance was in my heart,
and the year of my redeemed is come.
5 I looked, and there was none to help;
and I wondered that there was none to uphold:
therefore my own arm brought salvation to me;
and my wrath, it upheld me.
6 I trod down amim in my anger,
and made them drunk in my wrath,
and I poured out their lifeblood la-aretz."

7 I will make mention of the chesed of YHWH,
and the praises of YHWH,
according to all that YHWH has bestowed on us,
v'rav tov l'veit Yisra'el,
which he has bestowed on them according to his mercies,
and according to the multitude of his loving kindnesses.
8 Vayomer, "Surely, they are my people,
banim who will not deal falsely:"
so he was their Moshia.
9 In all their affliction he was afflicted,
u'malakh of his presence saved them:
in his love and in his pity he redeemed them;
and he bore them, and carried them kol-y'mei olam.
10 But they rebelled,
and grieved his Ruach Kodesh:
therefore he was turned to be their enemy,
and himself fought against them.
11 Then his people remembered y'mei olam,
Mosheh (with) his people,
saying, Where is he who brought them up out of the sea
with the shepherds of his flock?
Where is he who put in the midst of them
his Ruach Kodesh?
12 Who caused his glorious arm
to go at the right hand of Mosheh?
Who divided mayim before them,
to make for himself a shem olam?
13 Who led them through the depths?
As a horse ba-midbar,
they didn't stumble?
14 As the livestock that go down into the valley,
Ruach YHWH caused them to rest;
so you led your people,
to make for yourself a glorious name.

15 Look down mi-shamayim and see,
from the habitation of your holiness and of your glory:
where are your zeal and your mighty acts?
the yearning of your heart and your compassion
are restrained toward me.
16 Ki Attah Avinu,
though Avraham doesn't know us,
and Yisra'el does not acknowledge us:
Attah, YHWH, Avinu;
our Redeemer me-olam is your name.
17 YHWH, why do you make us to err from your ways,
and harden our heart from your fear?
Return for the sake of your avadim,
the tribes of your inheritance.
18 Your am kadosh possessed your Mikdash but a little while:
our adversaries have trodden it down.
19 We have become as they over whom you never bear rule,
as those who were not called by your name.

PEREQ ‏סד‎
CHAPTER 64

64:1 (63:19b in Heb.) Oh that you would tear shamayim, that you would come down,
that harim might quake at your presence,
2 (64:1 in Heb.) as when fire kindles the brushwood,
and the fire causes mayim to boil;
to make your name known to your adversaries,
that goyim may tremble at your presence!
3 When you did awesome things which we didn't look for,
you came down, harim quaked at your presence.
4 Me-olam (men) have not heard,
nor perceived by the ear,
neither has the eye seen Elohim besides you,
who works for him who waits for him.
5 You meet him who rejoices and works tzedek,
those who remember you in your ways.
Behold, you were angry, and we sinned.
We have been in sin for a long time; and shall we be saved?
6 For we have all become as one who is tame,
and kol tzidkoteinu is as a polluted garment:
and we all fade as a leaf;
and our iniquities, ka-ruach, take us away.
7 There is none who calls on your name,
who stirs up himself to take hold of you;
for you have hid your face from us,
and have consumed us by means of our iniquities.

8 But now, YHWH, Avinu attah;
we are the clay, and you our potter;
and we all are the work of your hand.
9 Don't be furious, YHWH,
neither remember iniquity forever:
see, look, we beg you, we are all your people.
10 Your holy cities are become midbar,
Tziyyon
is become midbar,
Y'rushalaim
a desolation.
11 Our Beit, Kadosh and beautiful,
where avoteinu praised you,
is burned with fire;
and all our pleasant places are laid waste.
12 Will you refrain yourself for these things, YHWH?
will you remain silent, and afflict us very sore?

PEREQ ‏סה‎
CHAPTER 65

65:1 "I am inquired of by those who didn't ask;
I am found by those who didn't seek me:
I said, "Hinneni, hinneni" to a goy that was not called by my name.
2 I have spread out my hands kol ha-yom
to a rebellious people,
who walk ha-derekh lo-tov,
after their own thoughts;
3 a people who provoke me
to my face continually,
sacrificing in gardens,
and burning incense on bricks;
4 who sit among the graves,
and lodge in the secret places;
who eat basar of pigs,
and broth of abominable things is in their vessels;
5 who say, Stand by yourself,
don't come near to me, for I am holier than you.
These are a smoke in my nose,
a fire that burns kol ha-yom.
6 "Hinneh, it is written before me:
I will not keep silence, but will recompense,
yes, I will recompense into their bosom,
7 your own iniquities, and the iniquities of avoteikhem together,"
amar YHWH,
"who have burned incense al-he-harim,
and blasphemed me on the hills;
therefore will I first measure their work
into their bosom."

8 Ko amar YHWH,
"As ha-tirosh is found in the cluster,
and one says, 'Don't destroy it,
for a blessing is in it:'
so will I do for the sake of my avadim,
that I may not destroy them all.
9 I will bring forth mi-Ya'akov zera,
u'mi-Y'hudah
an inheritor of my harim;
and my chosen shall inherit it,
and my avadim shall dwell there.
10 Ha-Sharon shall be a fold of flocks,
and the valley of Akhor a place for herds to lie down in,
for my people who have sought me.
11 "But you who forsake YHWH, who forget my har kadosh,
who prepare a shulchan for Fortune,
and who fill up mixed wine to Destiny;
12 I will destine you to the sword,
and you shall all bow down to the slaughter;
because when I called, you did not answer;
when I spoke, you did not hear;
but you did that which was evil in my eyes,
and chose that in which I didn't delight."

13 Therefore koh amar Adonai YHWH,
"Hinneh, my avadim shall eat,
but you shall be hungry;
behold, my servants shall drink,
but you shall be thirsty;
behold, my servants shall rejoice,
but you shall be disappointed;
14 hinneh, my avadim shall sing for joy of heart,
but you shall cry for sorrow of heart,
and shall wail for anguish of ruach.
15 You shall leave your name for a curse to my chosen;
and Adonai YHWH will kill you;
and he will call his avadim by shem acher:
16 so that he who blesses himself ba-aretz
shall bless himself b'Elohei amen;
and he who swears ba-aretz
shall swear b'Elohei amen;
because the former troubles are forgotten,
and because they are hid from my eyes.
17 "Ki hinneh, bore shamayim chadashim
va-aretz chadashah
;
and the former things shall not be remembered,
nor come into mind.
18 But be you glad and rejoice forever in that which I create;
for, behold, I create Y'rushalaim a rejoicing,
and her people a joy.
19 I will rejoice bi'Y'rushalaim,
and joy in my people;
and there shall be heard in her no more the voice of weeping
and the voice of crying.
20 "There shall be no more there
an infant of days,
nor an old man who has not filled his days;
for the child shall die one hundred years old,
and the sinner being one hundred years old shall be accursed.
21 They shall build batim, and inhabit them;
and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them.
22 They shall not build, and another inhabit;
they shall not plant, and another eat:
for as the days of a tree shall be the days of my people,
and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands.
23 They shall not labor in vain,
nor bring forth for calamity;
for they are the zera of the blessed of YHWH,
and their offspring with them.
24 It shall happen that, before they call, I will answer;
and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.
25 The wolf and the lamb shall feed together,
and the lion shall eat straw like the ox;
and dust shall be the serpent's food.
They shall not hurt nor destroy
in all my har kadosh,"
amar YHWH.

PEREQ ‏סו‎
CHAPTER 66

66:1 Koh amar YHWH, "Ha-shamayim is my kisseh,
v'ha-aretz
is my footstool:
where is the bayit you will build for me?
and what place shall be my rest?
2 Kol eleh has my hand made,
and so kol eleh came to be,"
n'um YHWH:
"but to this (man) will I look,
even to him who is poor and of a contrite ruach,
and who trembles at my davar.

3 He who kills an ox is as he who kills a man;
he who sacrifices a lamb, as he who breaks a dog's neck;
(he) offering minchah (as one who offers) dam chazir;
he who burns frankincense, as he who blesses an idol.
Yes, they have chosen their own ways,
and their nefesh delights in their abominations:
4 I also will choose their delusions,
and will bring their fears on them;
because when I called, none did answer;
when I spoke, they did not hear:
but they did that which was evil in my eyes,
and chose that in which I didn't delight."

5 Hear davar YHWH,
you who tremble at his davar:
"Your brothers who hate you,
who cast you out for my name's sake,
have said, 'Let YHWH be glorified,
that we may see your simchah;'
but it is those who shall be disappointed.

6 A voice of tumult from the city,
a voice from the temple,
qol YHWH
that renders recompense to his enemies.

7 "Before she travailed, she brought forth;
before her pain came,
she delivered a son.
8 Who has heard such a thing?
who has seen such things?
Is the birth of an eretz b'yom echad?
shall a goy be brought forth at once?
for as soon as Tziyyon travailed,
she brought forth her banim.
9 Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth?"
yomar YHWH:
"shall I who cause to bring forth shut the womb?"
says your Elohim.
10 "Rejoice with Y'rushalaim, and be glad for her,
all you who love her:
rejoice for joy with her,
all you who mourn over her;
11 that you may nurse and be satisfied
at the comforting breasts;
that you may drink deeply with delight
from the abundance of her glory."

12 Ki-koh amar YHWH,
"Hinneh, I will extend shalom to her like a river,
and k'vod goyim like an overflowing stream:
and you will nurse.  You will be carried on her side,
and will be dandled on her knees.
13 As one whom his mother comforts,
so will I comfort you;
u'v'Y'rushalaim you will be comforted."
14 You will see it, and your heart shall rejoice,
and your bones shall flourish like the tender grass:
and yad YHWH shall be known toward his avadim;
and he will have indignation against his enemies.

15 Ki hinneh, YHWH ba-esh yavo,
and his chariots shall be like the whirlwind;
to render his anger with fierceness,
and his rebuke with flames of fire.
16 Ki va-esh YHWH will execute judgment,
and by his sword et-kol basar;
and the slain of YHWH shall be many.
66:17 "Those who sanctify themselves and purify themselves to go to the gardens, behind one in the midst, eating basar ha-chazir, and the abomination, and the mouse, they shall come to an end together," n'um YHWH.

66:18 "For I know their works and their thoughts: the time comes that I will gather kol ha-goyim and languages; and they shall come, and shall see my kavod.  19 "I will set a sign among them, and I will send such as escape of them to ha-goyim, Tarshish, Pul, v'Lud who draw the bow, Tuval v'Yavan, to the islands afar off, who have not heard my fame, neither have seen my kavod; and they shall declare my kavod ba-goyim.  20 They shall bring all your brothers mi-kol ha-goyim (for a) minchah la-YHWH, on horses, and in chariots, and in litters, and on mules, and on dromedaries, to my har kadosh, Y'rushalaim," amar YHWH, "as b'nei Yisra'el bring their minchah in a tahor vessel into beit YHWH.  21 Of them also will I take la-kohenim, la-L'viyyim," amar YHWH.

22 "For as ha-shamayim ha-chadashim v'ha-aretz ha-chadashim,
which I will make,
shall remain before me," n'um YHWH,
"so your zera and your name shall remain.
23 Va'y'hi, that from one chodesh to another,
and from one Shabbat to another,
yavo khol basar to worship before me,"
amar YHWH.

66:24 "They shall go forth, and look on the dead bodies of ha-anashim who have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they will be loathsome l'khol basar."

53:11:  So read the Dead Sea Scrolls and Septuagint.  Masoretic Text omits "the light".
56:5:  A monument and a memorial; lit. "hand and name."  Compare "memorial" in Ex. 3:15b.
61:1-2a:  Luke 4:18-19.  Yeshua stopped short of proclaiming it the "day of vengeance of our God."
