SINCE WE READ VERY LITTLE IN THE BIBLE ABOUT EIGHT OF THE FIRST TEN GENERATIONS AFTER THEIR FIRST SONS ARE BORN, HERE IS A LITTLE PRESPECTIVE ON THE LIFE SPANS OF THE ANTEDILUVIANS.
(And some postdiluvians.)
Here are some interesting points:
1. Noah's father, Lamech, was 56 years old when ADAM died!
2. Noah was born just 14 years after SETH died.
3. Methusalah died the year of the flood.
4. When Abraham was born there were ELEVEN GENERATIONS living.
5. Abraham was 60 years old when NOAH died.
6. SHEM DIED 35 YEARS AFTER ABRAHAM DIED!
7. Eber, from whom came the name Hebrew, Abraham's GGGG-GF, died 64 YEARS AFTER Abraham!
(N.B.: The ages given for the postdeluvian patriarchs in most versions of the Bible are from the Masoretic Text, which was copied and edited between the 7th and 10th centuries CE. The Septuagint (LXX), an older Greek version from about the 2nd century BCE, shows the ages of several of the patriarchs to be 100 years older than the Masoretic Text gives. Also, the LXX adds Cainan between Arpachshad and Shelach, which is apparently where Luke obtained his information. These additional centuries make it clear that Noah could not have seen the birth of Abraham. Therefore, the chart below should be many lines longer.)
