The stupidity, the egotism, the vanity of humans never ceases to amaze me. Humans' insignificance in the face of "Mother Nature’s" power and wrath is completely lost in their "we-can-do-anything" attitude. (The Tower of Babel comes to mind.)
Building ramshackle huts on beaches with an elevation of five feet above sea level. Straightening and paving rivers. Covering thousands of acres in cities with asphalt and concrete causing runoff to those rivers, and preventing replenishment of groundwater, which causes subsidence (depression of ground level).
Multi-million dollar hotel complexes are included in those ramshackle huts when compared to the immense power of a wall of water two hundred feet high (which may occur when a large asteroid strikes [Rev. 8:8]) with millions of tons of force behind it. Straightening rivers increases their speed. Loss of groundwater can have devastating effects agriculturally, thus financially and health-wise.
Man’s power is puny, insignificant, trivial compared to the Power behind the power of the sea, the wind, the sun. If we would learn that, and turn to that Power, we might have a future. As it is, we ignore and turn from that Power more and more. We turn from His people. We withhold support from them and give it to their enemies.
He said to Abraham, "I will bless those who bless you and curse him that curses you." (Gen. 12:3)
One definition of "curse" is "to cause evil or injury to." Neglecting those people and siding with their enemies obviously causes injury to befall them - physically, economically, spiritually.
A reciprocal curse is befalling this nation for its involvement in the curse on the people and land of Israel. Do the names Charley, Frances, Ivan, Jeanne, and Katrina mean anything to you?

MY PEOPLE, WHICH ARE CALLED BY MY NAME, SHALL HUMBLE THEMSELVES, AND PRAY, AND SEEK MY FACE, AND TURN FROM THEIR WICKED WAYS;

?Wicked ways??? Hmmm... The term "Mardi Gras" again comes to mind, also. Not to mention ignoring commands to not do as the heathen do, but rather to incorporate their festivals into our way of life. (Deut. 18:9; Jer. 10:2 - [Saturnalia]; Easter [Eoster, Astarte]; sun-god day.)
"God knows my heart." (Yes, he does.) "The imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth" (Gen. 8:21).
"I know Jesus wasn't born on December 25, but does it really matter what day we observe his birth as long as we love Him?"
"Jesus was resurrected on Sunday -- the Lord's Day. That's why we observe Sunday as the Lord's Day 52 times a year."
Think about this: There is no basic difference between "the Lord's day" and "the day of the Lord." "The Day of the Lord" is spoken of many times in the (KJV) Bible, "the Lord's day" only once. And that one time, John goes on to describe the end times; i.e., "the Day of the Lord." It was NOT "SUNDAY."
