CHAPTER 1

1:1 In the days when ha-shoftim judged, there was a famine ba-aretz.  A certain ish mi-Beit Lechem Y'hudah went to live bi-s'deh Mo'av with his ishshah u'sh'nei vanim.  2 V'shem ha-ish Elimelech, v'shem ishto No`omi,[♦] u'sh'nei vanav Machlon v'Chilyon, Efratim mi-Beit Lechem Y'hudah.  They came into s'deh Mo'av and lived there.  3 Va'yamat Elimelech, ish No`omi; and she was left with sh'nei vaneiha.  4 They took for themselves nashim Mo'aviyot.  Shem ha-achat Orpah, v'shem ha-shenit Rut.  They lived there about ten years.  5 V'yamut Machlon v'Chilyon both, and ha-ishshah was bereaved of her two y'ladim and of ishah.

1:6 Then she arose with her daughters-in-law, that she might return mi-s'deh Mo'ab; for she had heard bi-s'deh Mo'ab how YHWH had visited amo in giving them lechem.  7 She went out of ha-maqom where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her.  They went ba-derekh to return el-eretz Y'hudah.  8 Vatomer No`omi to her two daughters-in-law, "Go, return each of you to her mother's house.  May YHWH show chesed to you, as you have dealt im-ha-metim and with me.  9 May YHWH grant you that you may find rest, (each) ishshah beit ishah."  Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voices, and wept.  10 They said to her, "No, but we will return with you to your people."  11 Vatomer No`omi, "Go back, my daughters.  Why do you want to go with me?  Do I still have banim in my womb, that they may be to you la'anashim?[♦]12 Go back, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband.  If I should say, 'I have tikvah,' if I should even have a husband ha-lailah, and should also bear banim,  13 would you then wait until they were grown?  Would you then refrain from having l'ish?  No, my daughters, for it grieves me seriously for your sakes, for yad YHWH has gone out against me."  14 They lifted up their voices and wept again; then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Rut stayed with her.

1:15 Vatomer, "Hinneh, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people v'el eloheihah.  Follow your sister-in-law."  16 Vatomer Rut, "Don't urge me to leave you, and to return from following you, for where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay.  Your people will be my people, and your Elohim my Elohim.  17 Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried.  May YHWH do so to me, and more also, if anything but ha-met part you and me."  18 When No`omi saw that she was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.

1:19 So they both went until they came to Beit Lechem.  When they had come to Beit Lechem, kol ha-ir was excited about them, and they asked, "Ha-zot No`omi?"  20 Vatomer to them, "Don't call me No`omi.  Call me Mara, for Shaddai has dealt very bitterly with me.  21 I went out full, and YHWH has brought me home again empty.  Why do you call me No`omi, since YHWH has testified against me, and Shaddai has afflicted me?"

1:22 So No`omi returned, v'Rut ha-Mo'avitah, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned mi-s'deh Mo'av.  They came to Beit Lechem in the beginning of q'tzir.

CHAPTER 2

2:1 No`omi had a relative l'ishah, ish gibbor of wealth, mi-mishhpachat Elimelech, u'sh'mo Bo`az.  2 Vatomer Rut ha-Moaviyah el-No`omi, "Let me now go to ha-sadeh, and glean among the ears of grain after him in whose sight I find favor."  Vatomer to her, "Go, bati."  3 She went, and came and gleaned ba-sadeh after the reapers; and she happened to come to the portion of ha-sadeh l'Vo`az, asher mi-mishpachat Elimelech.  4 V'hinneh-Vo`az ba mi-Beit Lekhem vayomer to the reapers, "May YHWH be with you."  Vayomru, "May YHWH bless you."  5 Vayomer Bo`az to his servant who was set over the reapers, "Whose maiden is this?"  6 The servant who was set over the reapers answered, "The maiden, Moaviyyah hi who came back `im-No`omi mi-s'dei Mo'av.  7 Vatomer, 'Please let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves.'  So she came, and has continued even from ha-boqer v`ad `attah, except that she rested a little ba-bayit.' "

2:8 Vayomer Bo`az el-Rut, "Listen, biti.  Don't go to glean b'sadeh acher, and don't go from here, but stay here close to my maidens.  9 Let your eyes be ba-sadeh that they reap, and go after them.  Haven't I commanded the young men not to touch you?  When you are thirsty, go to the vessels, and drink from that which the young men have drawn."  10 Then she fell on her face and bowed herself to ha-aretz, vatomer to him, "Why have I found favor in your sight, that you should take knowledge of me, since I am a foreigner?"  11 Bo`az answered voyomer to her, "I have been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your ishah, and how you have left avikha v'imekha v'eretz of your birth, and have come to a people that you didn't know before.  12 May YHWH repay your work, and a full reward be given to you mi-YHWH, Elohei Yisrael, under whose kanfot you have come to take refuge."  13 Vatomer, "Let me find favor in your sight, adoni, because you have comforted me, and because you have spoken kindly to your servant, though I am not as one of your servants."

2:14 Vayomer Bo`az to her at meal time, "Come here, and eat min-ha-lekhem, and dip your morsel ba-chometz."  She sat beside the reapers, and they passed her parched grain.  She ate, was satisfied, and left some of it.  15 When she had risen up to glean, Bo`az commanded his young men, saying, "Let her glean even among the sheaves, and don't reproach her.  16 Also pull out some for her from the bundles, and leave it.  Let her glean, and don't rebuke her."

2:17 So she gleaned ba-sadeh `ad-ha-`arev; and she beat out that which she had gleaned, and it was about an eifah of barley.  18 She took it up, and went into ha-`ir.  Then her mother-in-law saw what she had gleaned; and she brought out and gave to her that which she had left after she had enough.  19 Her mother-in-law said to her, "Where have you gleaned today?  Where have you worked?  Blessed be he who noticed you."  She told her mother-in-law with whom she had worked, "Shem ha-ish with whom I worked today is Bo`az."  20 Vatomer No`omi to her daughter-in-law, "May he be blessed by YHWH, who has not abandoned his chesed to ha-chayyim v'et ha-metim."  Vatomer No`omi to her, "Ha-ish is a close relative to us, one of our near kinsmen."  21 Vatomer Rut ha-Mo'aviyyah, "Yes, he said to me, 'You shall stay close to my young men until they have finished all my harvest.' "  22 Vatomer No`omi el-Rut her daughter-in-law, "(It is) tov, biti, that you go out with his maidens, and that they not meet you b'sadeh acher."  23 So she stayed close to the maidens of Bo`az, to glean to the end of barley harvest and of wheat harvest; and she lived with her mother-in-law.

CHAPTER 3

3:1 Vatomer No`omi her mother-in-law to her, "Biti, shall I not seek rest for you, that it may be well with you?  2 Now isn't Bo`az our kinsman, with whose maidens you were?  Hinneh, he will be winnowing barley on the threshing floor ha-lailah.  3 Therefore wash yourself, anoint yourself, get dressed, and go down to the threshing floor; but don't make yourself known la-ish until he has finished eating and drinking.  4 It shall be, when he lies down, that you shall note ha-maqom where he is lying.  Then you shall go in, uncover his feet, and lie down.  Then he will tell you what to do."  5 Vatomer to her, "All that you say, I will do."

3:6 She went down to the threshing floor, and did everything that her mother-in-law told her.  7 When Bo`az had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain.  She came softly, uncovered his feet, and lay down.  8 At midnight, ha-ish was startled and turned himself; v'hinneh, ishshah lay at his feet.  9 Vayomer, "Mi-at?"  She answered, "Anochi Rut your servant.  Therefore, spread the corner of your garment over your servant; ki go'el attah."  10 Vayomer, "You are blessed la-YHWH, biti.  You have shown more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, because you didn't follow young men, whether poor or rich.  11 V`attah, biti, don't be afraid. I will do to you all that you say; for all (the men) in the gate (of the city) of my people knows that you are a worthy woman.  12 Now it is true that go'el anochi.  However, (there is a) go'el nearer than I.  13 Stay ha-lailah, v'hayah ba-boqer, if he will perform for you the part of a go'el, good.  Let him do the kinsman's duty.  But if he will not do the duty of a go'el for you, then I will do the duty of a go'el for you, as YHWH lives.  Lie down `ad-ha-boqer."

3:14 She lay at his feet `ad-ha-boqer, then she rose up before one could discern another.  For he said, "Let it not be known that ha-ishshah came to the threshing floor."  15 Vayomer, "Bring the mantle that is on you, and hold it."  She held it; and he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her; va-yavo ha-`ir.  16 When she came to her mother-in-law, she said, "How did it go, biti?"  She told her all that ha-ish had done for her.  17 Vatomer, "He gave me these six measures of barley; for he said, 'Don't go empty to your mother-in-law.' "  18 Vatomer, "Wait, biti, until you know what will happen; for ha-ish will not rest until he has settled this today."

PEREQ ‏ד‎
CHAPTER 4

4:1 U'Vo`az went up to the gate and sat down there.  V'hinneh, ha-go'el of whom Bo`az spoke came by.  Vayomer Bo`az to him, "Come over here, friend, and sit down!"  He came over, and sat down.  2 He took ten anashim mi-ziqnei ha-`ir, vayomer , "Sit down here," and they sat down.  3 Vayomer la-go'el, "A portion of ha-sadeh which (belonged to) achinu Elimelekh is being sold by No`omi, who has come back mi-sadeh Mo'av.  4 I thought I should tell you, saying, 'Buy it before those who sit here, and before ziqnei `ami.'  If you will redeem it, redeem it; but if you will not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know.  For there is no one to redeem it besides you; and I am after you."  He said, "I will redeem it."  5 Vayomer Bo`az, "B'yom you buy ha-sadeh mi-yad No`omi, you must buy it also mi-Rut ha-Mo'aviyyah, eshet ha-met, to raise up shem ha-met upon his inheritance."  6 Vayomer ha-go'el, "I can't redeem it for myself, lest I endanger my own inheritance.  Take my right of redemption for yourself; for I can't redeem it."

4:7 Now this was the custom in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning exchanging, to confirm all things: a man took off his sandal, and gave it to his neighbor; and this was the way of formalizing transactions b'Yisra'el.  8 Vayomer ha-go'el l'Vo`az, "Buy it for yourself," then he took off his sandal.  9 Vayomer Bo`az la-z'qenim v'khol ha-`am, "`Edim attem ha-yom, that I have bought kol asher (belonged to) Elimelech, and kol asher (belonged to) Chilyon u'Machlon, mi-yad No`omi.  10 V'gam et-Rut ha-Mo'aviyyah, eshet Machlon, I have purchased to be l'ishshah, to raise up shem ha-met on his inheritance, that shem ha-met may not be cut off me`im achav and from the gate of his place.  `Edim attem ha-yom."  11 Vayomru kol-ha`am asher in the gate, v'ha-z'qenim (said), "(We are) `edim.  May YHWH make ha-ishshah who has come into your bayit k'Rachel u'k'Leah, which both built beit Yisra'el; and treat you worthily b'Efratah, and be famous b'Veit Lachem.  12 Let your bayit be like beit Peretz, whom Tamar bore l'Y'hudah min-ha-zera, which YHWH will give you by this young woman."

4:13 So Bo`az took Rut and she became to him l'ishshah; and he went in to her, and YHWH enabled her to conceive, and she bore a son.  14 Ha-nashim said el-No`omi, "Baruch YHWH, who has not left you without a go'el ha-yom.  Let his name be famous b'Yisra'el.  15 He shall be to you a restorer of life and sustain you in your old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you, who is better to you than shiv`ah banim, has given birth to him."  16 No`omi took ha-yeled, laid him in her bosom, and became nurse to him.  17 Ha-nashim, her neighbors, gave him a name, saying, "A son is born to No`omi".  They named him `Oved [worshiper].  Hu avi Yishai, avi David.

4:18 V'eleh toledot Paretz: Peretz holid et-Chetzron,  19 v'Chetzron holid et-Ram, v'Ram holid et-`Amminadav,  20 v'Amminadav holid et-Nachshon, v'Nachshon holid et-Salmon,  21 v'Salmon holid et-Bo`az, u'Vo`az holid et-`Oved,  22 v'Oved holid et-Yishai, v'Yishai holid et-David.[A]
