1:1 Va'y'hi acherei mot Mosheh, `eved YHWH, vayomer YHWH el-Yehoshu`a bin-Nun, the minister of Mosheh, lemor,  2 Mosheh `avdi met; `attah arise, go over ha-Yarden hazeh, attah v'khol ha`am, el-ha-aretz which I do give to them, li'v'nei Yisra'el.  3 Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread on, to you have I given it, as I spoke to Moshe.  4 Me-ha-midbar v'ha-L'vanon hazeh v`ad ha-nahar ha-gadol, N'har P'rat, kol eretz ha-Chittim v`ad ha-yam ha-gadol, toward the going down of ha-shemesh, shall be your border.  5 There shall not any man be able to stand before you all the days of your life.  As I was with Moshe, so I will be with you; I will not fail you, nor forsake you.  6 Chazak and of good courage; for you shall cause ha`am hazeh to inherit ha-aretz which I swore to their fathers to give them.  7 Only chazak and very courageous, to observe to do according to kol ha-Torah, which Mosheh `avdai commanded you: don't turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.  8 Sefer ha-Torah hazeh shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate thereon yomam va-lailah, that you may observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success.  9 Haven't I commanded you? Chazak and of good courage; don't be afraid, neither be dismayed: for YHWH Eloheikha is with you wherever you go.

1:10 Then Yehoshu`a commanded the officers of ha`am, lemor,  11 Pass through the midst of the camp, and command ha`am, lemor, Prepare food; for within sheloshet yamim you are to pass over ha-Yarden hazeh, to go in to possess ha-aretz, which YHWH Eloheikhem gives you to possess it.

1:12 V'la-Ruveni v'la-Gadi, and to the half-tribe of Menashsheh, spoke Yehoshu`a, lemor,  13 Remember ha-davar which Mosheh `eved YHWH commanded you, lemor, YHWH Eloheikhem gives you rest, and will give you ha-aretz hazot.  14 Your nashim, your little ones, and your cattle shall abide ba-aretz which Moshe gave you beyond ha-Yarden; but you shall pass over before your brothers armed, all the mighty men of valor, and shall help them;  15 until YHWH has given your brothers rest, as he has given you, and they also have possessed ha-aretz which YHWH Eloheikhem gives them: then you shall return to ha-aretz of your possession, and possess it, which Mosheh `eved YHWH gave you beyond ha-Yarden toward the sunrise.  16 They answered Yehoshu`a, saying, All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.  17 According as we listened to Moshe in all things, so will we listen to you: only YHWH Eloheikha be with you, as he was with Moshe.  18 Whoever he be who shall rebel against your command, and shall not listen to your d'varim in all that you command him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of good courage.

2:1 Yehoshu`a-ben-Nun sent out of Shittim two men as spies secretly, saying, Go, view ha-aretz v'et-Y'richo.  They went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rachav, and lay there.  2 It was told l'melekh Y'richo, lemor, Hinneh, there came anashim in here ha-lai mi-b'nei Yisra'el to search out ha-aretz.  3 Melekh Y'richo sent to Rachav, lemor, Bring forth ha-anashim who are come to you, who have entered into your bayit; for they have come to search out kol-ha-aretz.  4 Ha-ishshah took the two anashim, and hid them; and she said, Yes, ha-anashim came to me, but I didn't know whence they were:  5 and it happened about the time of the shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that ha-anashim went out; where ha-anashim went I don't know: pursue after them quickly; for you will overtake them.  6 But she had brought them up to the roof, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order on the roof.  7 Ha-anashim pursued after them derekh ha-Yarden to the fords: and as soon as those who pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.

2:8 Before they lay down, she came up to them on the roof;  9 vatomer el-ha-anashim, I know that YHWH has given you ha-aretz, and that the fear of you is fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of ha-aretz melt away before you.  10 For we have heard how YHWH dried up mei Yam-Suf before you, when you came mi-Mitzrayim; and what you did to the two malkhei ha-Amori, who were beyond ha-Yarden l'Sichon u'l` Og, whom you utterly destroyed.  11 As soon as we had heard it, our hearts did melt, neither remained there any more ruach b'ish, because of you: ki YHWH Eloheikhem, hu Elohim ba-shamayim above, v'al-ha-aretz beneath.  12 V`attah, please swear to me ba-YHWH, since I have dealt kindly with you, that you also will deal kindly `im-beit avi, and give me a true token;  13 and that you will save alive avi v'et imo v'et achai v'et achyotai and all that they have, and will deliver nafshoteinu mi-mavet.  14 Vayomru ha-anashim to her, Nafshenu for yours, if you don't utter this our business; and it shall be, when YHWH gives us ha-aretz, that we will deal with you with chesed v'emet.

2:15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was on the side of the wall, and she lived on the wall.  16 Vatomer to them, Go to ha-har, lest the pursuers light on you; and hide yourselves there shloshet yamim, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may you go your way.  17 Vayomru ha-anashim to her, We will be guiltless of your oath which you have made us to swear.  18 Hinneh, when we come ba-aretz, you shall bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which you let us down by: and you shall gather to you into the house your father, and your mother, and your brothers, and all your father's bayit.  19 It shall be, that whoever shall go out of the doors of your bayit into the street, his blood shall be on his head, and we shall be guiltless: and whoever shall be with you ba-bayit, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be on him.  20 But if you utter this our business, then we shall be guiltless of your oath which you have made us to swear.  21 Vatomer, According to your words, so be it. She sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window.

2:22 They went, and came to ha-har, and abode there shloshet yamim, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but didn't find them.  23 Then the two anashim returned, and descended me-ha-har, and passed over, and came el-Yehoshu`a ben-Nun; and they told him all that had happened to them.  24 Vayomru el-Yehoshu`a, Truly YHWH has delivered into our hands kol ha-aretz; and moreover all the inhabitants of ha-aretz do melt away before us.

3:1 Yehoshu`a rose up early ba-boker; and they removed me-ha-Shittim, and came `ad-ha-Yarden, hu v'khol-b'nei Yisra'el; and they lodged there before they passed over.  2 It happened after shloshet yamim, that the officers went through the midst of the camp;  3 and they commanded ha`am, lemor, When you see aron b'rit-YHWH Eloheikhem, v'ha-kohanim bearing it, then you shall remove from your place, and go after it.  4 Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: don't come near to it, that you may know ha-derekh by which you must go; for you have not passed this way heretofore.  5 Vayomer Yehoshu`a el-ha`am, Sanctify yourselves; for tomorrow YHWH will do wonders among you.  6 Vahomer Yehoshu`a el-ha-kohanim, lemor, Take up aron ha-b'rit, and pass over lif'nei ha`am.  They took up aron ha-b'rit, and went lif'nei ha`am.  7 Vayomer YHWH el-Yehoshu`a, 'Ha-yom hazeh will I begin to magnify you in the sight of kol-Yisra'el, that they may know that, as I was with Moshe, so I will be with you.  8 You shall command ha-kohanim who bear aron ha-brit, lemor, When you are come to the brink of mei ha-Yarden, you shall stand still (in ha-Yarden).  9 Vayomer Yehoshu`a el-b'nei Yisra'el, Come here, and hear divrei YHWH Eloheikhem.  10 Vayomer Yehoshu`a, Hereby you shall know that the El chai is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you ha-K'na`ani, v'et-ha-Chitti, v'et-ha-Chivvi, v'et-ha-P'rizzi, v'et-ha-Girgashi, v'ha-Emori, v'ha-Y'vusi.  11 Hinneh, aron (of) ha-b'rit (of the) Adon (of) kol ha-aretz passes over before you Ba-Yarden.  12 Now therefore take twelve men out of the tribes of Yisra'el, for every tribe ish- echad, ish-echad.  13 V'hayah, when the soles of the feet of ha-kohanim who bear aron YHWH, Adon kol-ha-aretz, shall rest bi-mei ha-Yarden, mei ha-Yarden shall be cut off, ha-mayim that come down from above; and they shall stand in one heap.

3:14 Va'y'hi, when ha`am removed from their ohalim, to pass over ha-Yarden, ha-kohanim who bore aron ha-b'rit being lif'nei ha`am;  15 and when those who bore ha-aron were come to ha-Yarden, and the feet of ha-kohanim who bore ha-aron were dipped in the brink of ha-mayim (for ha-Yarden overflows all its banks all the time of harvest).  16 that ha-mayim which came down from above stood, and rose up in one heap, a great way off, me-Adam, ha`ir that is beside Tzar'tan; and those that went down `al yam ha`aravah, Yam ha-Melakh, were wholly cut off: v'ha`am passed over right against Y'richo.  17 Ha-kohanim who bore ha-aron ha-b'rit YHWH stood firm on dry ground in the midst of ha-Yarden; v'khol-Yisra'el passed over on dry ground, until kol ha-goy were passed clean over ha-Yarden.

4:1 It happened, when kol-ha-goy were clean passed over ha-Yarden vayomer YHWH el-Yehoshu`a, lemor,  2 Take for you min-ha`amtwelve anashim, ish-echad ish-echad out of every tribe,  3 and command you them, lemor, Take hence out of the midst of ha-Yarden, out of the place where the feet of ha-kohanim feet stood firm, twelve stones, and carry them over with you, and lay them down in the lodging-place, where you shall lodge ha-lailah.  4 Vayikra Yehoshu`a the twelve ish, whom he had prepared mi-b'nei Yisra'el, ish-echad ish echad, out of every tribe:  5 vayomer Yehoshu`a to them, Pass over lif'nei aron YHWH Eloheikhem into the midst of ha-Yarden, and take up ish `even echad on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of b'nei Yisra'el:  6 that this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask in time to come, saying, What do you mean by these stones?  7 then you shall tell them, Because mi'mei ha-Yarden were cut off before aron b'rit YHWH; when it passed over ha-Yarden, the waters of ha-Yarden were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial to b'nei Yisra'el `ad-olam.  8 B'nei Yisra'el did so as Yehoshu`a commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of ha-Yarden, ka-asher diber YHWH el-Yehoshu`a, according to the number of the tribes of b'nei Yisra'el; and they carried them over with them to the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.  9 Yehoshu`a set up twelve stones in the midst of ha-Yarden, in the place where the feet of ha-kohanim who bore aron ha-b'rit stood: and they are there to this day.  10 Ha-kohanim who bore ha-aron stood in the midst of ha-Yarden, until everything was finished that YHWH commanded Yehoshu`a to speak el-ha`am, according to all that Mosheh commanded Yehoshu`a: and ha`am hurried and passed over.

4:11 It happened, when kol-ha`am had completely passed over, that aron-YHWH passed over, v'ha-kohanim lif'nei ha`am.  12 B'nei Re'uven, u'v'nei-Gad, and the half-tribe of Menashsheh, passed over armed lif'nei b'nei Yisra'el, ka-asher diber Mosheh to them:  13 about forty thousand ready armed for war passed over lif'nei YHWH to battle, to the plains of Y'richo.  14 Ba-yom ha-hu YHWH magnified Yehoshu`a in the sight of -Yisra'el; and they feared him, as they feared Mosheh, all the days of his life.

4:15 Vayomer YHWH el-Yehoshu`a, lemor,  16 Command ha-kohanim who bear aron ha`edut, that they come up out of ha-Yarden.  17 Yehoshu`a therefore commanded ha-kohanim, lemor, Come up out of Yarden.  18 It happened, when ha-kohanim who bore aron b'rit YHWH were come up out of the midst of ha-Yarden, and the soles of the feet of ha-kohanim were lifted up to the dry ground, that the waters of ha-Yarden returned to their place, and went over all its banks, as before.

4:19 Ha`am came up min-ha-Yarden on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped ba-Gilgal, on the east border of Y'richo.  20 Those twelve stones, which they took min-ha-Yarden, did Yehoshu`a set up ba-Gilgal.  21 Vayomer el-b'nei Yisra'el, lemor, When your banim shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones?  22 Then you shall let your children know, saying, Yisra'el came over ha-Yarden hazeh on dry land.  23 For YHWH Eloheikhem dried up me ha-Yarden from before you, until you were passed over, as did YHWH Eloheikhem l'Yam Suf, which he dried up from before us, until we were passed over;  24 that kol `amei ha-aretz may know the hand of YHWH, that it is mighty; that you may fear YHWH Eloheikhem kol-ha-yamim.

5:1 It happened, when kol malkhei ha-Emori, who were beyond ha-Yarden westward, v'khol malkhei ha-Kana'ani asher `al ha-yam,, heard how YHWH had dried up mei ha-Yarden mi-p'nei b'nei Yisra'el, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there ruach in them any more, because of b'nei Yisra'el.

5:2 Ba`et ha-hi YHWH said el-Yehoshu`a, Make flint knives, and circumcise again b'nei-Yisra'el the second time.  3 Yehoshu`a made himself flint knives, and circumcised b'nei Yisra'el el-Giv`at ha`Aralot.  4 This is the cause why Yehoshu`a circumcised: kol ha`am who came forth mi-Mitzrayim, who were males, kol anashim of war died ba-midbar ba-derekh after they came forth mi-Mitzrayim.  5 For kol ha`am who came out were circumcised; but kol ha`am who were born ba-midbar ba-derekh as they came forth mi-Mitzrayim had not been circumcised.  6 For b'nei Yisra'el walked forty years ba-midbar, until kol ha-goy anshei of war who came forth mi-Mitzrayim, were consumed, because they didn't listen to qol YHWH: to whom YHWH swore that he wouldn't let them see ha-aretz which YHWH swore to their fathers that he would give us, eretz flowing with milk and honey.  7 Their banim, whom he raised up in their place, Yehoshu`a circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them ba-derekh.

5:8 It happened, when they had done circumcising kol ha-goy, that they abode in their places in the camp, until they were whole.  9 Vayomer YHWH el-Yehoshu`a, This day I have rolled away the reproach of Mitzrayim from off you.  Vayikra shem ha-maqom ha-hu Gilgal `ad ha-yom hazeh.  10 B'nei Yisra'el encamped ba-Gilgal; and they kept ha-Pesach on the fourteenth day of the month ba-erev b`aravot Y'richo.  11 They ate of the produce of ha-aretz on the next day after ha-Pesach, matzot, and parched grain, in the same day.  12 Ha-man ceased on the next day, after they had eaten of the produce of ha-aretz; neither was there any more man li'v'nei Yisra'el; but they ate of the fruit of eretz Kana`an ba-shanah ha-hi.

5:13 It happened, when Yehoshu`a was by Y'richo, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, v'hinneh, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Yehoshu`a went to him, vayomer to him, Are you for us, or for our adversaries?  14 Vayomer, Lo, ki ani sar-tz'va-YHWH, and I now come.  Yehoshu`a fell on his face to the eretz, and bowed down vayomer to him, What says adoni to his eved?  15 Vayomer sar tz'va YHWH to Yehoshu`a, Put off your shoe from off your foot; ki ha-maqom whereon you stand is qodesh. Yehoshu`a did so.

6:1 Now Y'richo was tightly shut up because of b'nei Yisra'el: none went out, and none came in.  2 Vayomer YHWH el-Y'hoshu`a, See, I have given into your hand Y'richo v'et-malkah, and the mighty men of valor.  3 You shall compass ha`ir, all the men of war, going about ha`ir once.  Thus shall you do sheshet yamim.  4 Vshiv`ah kohanim shall bear shiv`ah rams' horns shof'rot lif'nei ha-aron: u'va-yom ha-sh'vi`i you shall compass ha`ir seven times, and ha-kohanim shall blow ha-shof'rot.  5 V'haya that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when you hear qol ha-shofar, then kol-ha`am shall shout with a t'ru`ah gadol; and the wall of ha`ir shall fall down flat, and ha`am shall go up every man straight before him.  6 Va-yikra Yehoshu`a ben-Nun el-ha-kohanim, vayomer to them, Take up aron ha-b'rit, v'shiv`ah kohanim bear shiv`ah shof'rot yov'lim lif'nei aron YHWH.  7 Vayomer el-ha`am, Pass on, and compass ha`ir, and let the armed men pass on lif'nei aron YHWH.

6:8 It was so, that when Yehoshu`a had spoken el-ha`am, shiv`ah ha-kohanim bearing shiv`ah shof'rot ha-yov'lim lif-nei YHWH passed on, and blew ha-shofarot: va-aron ha-b'rit YHWH followed them.  9 The armed men went lif'nei ha-kohanim who blew ha-shofarot, and the rearward went acharei ha-aron, (ha-kohanim) blowing ha-shofarot as they went.  10 Yehoshu`a commanded ha`am, lemor, You shall not shout, nor let your voice be heard, neither shall a davar proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then shall you shout.  11 So he caused aron-YHWH to compass ha`ir, going about it once: and they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp.

6:12 Yehoshu`a rose early ba-boker, and ha-kohanim took up aron YHWH.  13 Shiv`ah ha-kohanim bearing shiv`ah shof'rot ha-yov'lim lif'nei aron YHWH went on continually, and blew the shofars: and the armed men went before them; and the rearward came acherei aron YHWH, (ha-kohanim) blowing ha-shofarot as they went.  14 They compassed ha`ir ba-yom ha-shenit once, and returned into the camp: so they did sheshet yamim.

6:15 Va-y'hi ba-yom ha-sh'vi`im, that they rose early at ha-shachar of the day, and compassed ha`ir after the same manner seven times: only ba-yom ha-hu they compassed ha`ir seven times.  16 Va'y'hi at the seventh time, when ha-kohanim blew ha-shofarot, vayomer Yehoshu`a to the people, Shout; for YHWH has given you ha`ir.  17 Ha`ir shall be devoted,6-17 even it and all that is therein, la-YHWH: only Rachav the prostitute shall live, she and all who are with her ba-bayit, because she hid ha-malakhim that we sent.  18 But as for you, only keep yourselves from the devoted thing, lest when you have devoted it, you take of the devoted thing; so would you make the camp of Yisra'el accursed, and trouble it.  19 But kol kesef v'zahav, and vessels of n'choshet and iron, kodesh hu la'YHWH: they shall come into the treasury of YHWH.  20 So ha`am shouted, and (ha-kohanim) blew the shofarot; and it happened, when the people heard the sound of ha-shofar, that the people shouted with a t'ru`ah g'dolah, and the wall fell down flat, so that ha`am went up into ha`ir, every man straight before him, and they took ha`ir.  21 They utterly destroyed kol asher ba`ir, me-ish v`ad-ishshah, young v`ad zaqen, and ox, and sheep, va-chamor, with the edge of the sword.

6:22 V'li-sh'nayim who had spied out ha`aretz amar Yehoshu`a, Go into beit ha-ishshah the prostitute, and bring out misham ha-ishshah, and all that she has, as you swore to her.  23 The young men the spies went in, and brought out Rachav, and her father, and her mother, and her brothers, and all that she had; all her relatives also they brought out; and they set them outside of the camp of Yisra'el.  24 They burned ha`ir ba-esh, and all that was therein; only ha-kesef v'ha-zahav, and the vessels of n'choshet and of iron, they put into the treasury of beit YHWH.  25 But Rachav the prostitute, and beit aviha, and all that she had, did Yehoshu`a save alive; and she lived in the midst of Yisra'el `ad ha-yom hazeh, because she hid ha-malakhim, whom Yehoshu`a sent to spy out Y'richo.

6:26 Yehoshu`a charged ha`am with an oath at that time, saying, Cursed be ha-ish lif'nei YHWH, that rises up and builds ha`ir hazot, Y'richo: with the loss of his firstborn shall he lay the foundation of it, and with the loss of his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.

6:27 So YHWH was with Yehoshu`a; and his fame was b'khol ha-aretz.

CHAPTER 7
Audio (Open in new tab or window to read along.)
7:1 B'nei-Yisra'el committed a trespass ba-cherem (in the devoted thing;7-1) for `Akhan, ben-Karmi, ben-Zavdi, ben-Zerach, l'matteh Y'hudah, min-ha-cherem: and the anger of YHWH was kindled against b'nei Yisra'el.

7:2 Y'hoshu`a sent anashim mi-Y'richo (to) `Ai, which is beside Beit-Aven, on the east side of Beit-El, vayomer to them, lemor, Go up and spy out ha-aretz.  Ha-anashim went up and spied out `Ai.  3 They returned to Y'hoshu`a vayomru to him, Don't let kol ha`am go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and strike `Ai; don't make kol ha`am to toil there; for they are but few.  4 So there went up there min-ha`am about three thousand men: and they fled lifnei anshei ha`Ai.  5 Anshei ha`Ai struck of them about thirty-six men; and they chased them from before the gate `ad-ha-Sh'varim, and struck them at the descent; and the hearts of ha`am melted, v'y'hi l'mayim.

7:6 Y'hoshu`a tore his clothes, and fell to the dirt on his face lifnei aron YHWH `ad-ha`erev, hu v'ziqnei Yisra'el; and they put dust on their heads.  7 Vayomer Y'hoshu`a, Aha, Adonai YHWH, why have you at all brought ha`am hazeh over ha-Yarden, to deliver us b'yad ha-Emori, to cause us to perish?  Would that we had been content and lived beyond ha-Yarden!  8 Bi, Adonai, what shall I say, after that Yisra'el has turned their backs before their enemies!  9 For ha-K'ana'ani and all the inhabitants of ha-aretz will hear of it, and will compass us round, and cut off our name min-ha-aretz: and what will you do for shimkha ha-gadol?

7:10 Vayomer YHWH el-Y'hoshu`a, Get up; why are you thus fallen on your face?  11 Yisra'el has sinned; yes, they have even transgressed my b'rit which I commanded them: yes, they have even taken of the devoted thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also; and they have even put it among their own stuff.  12 Therefore b'nei Yisra'el can't stand before their enemies; they turn their backs before their enemies, because they are become accursed: I will not be with you any more, except you destroy the devoted thing from among you.  13 Up, kadesh et-ha`am, and say, Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow: ki koh amar YHWH, Elohei Yisra'el, There is a devoted thing in the midst of you, Yisra'el; you can not stand before your enemies, until you take away the devoted thing from among you.  14 In the morning therefore you shall be brought near by your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which YHWH takes shall come near by mishpachot; v'ha-mishpachah which YHWH shall take shall come near la-batim; v'ha-bayit which YHWH shall take shall come near man by man.  15 It shall be, that he who is taken with the devoted thing shall be burnt ba-esh, he and all that he has; because he has transgressed the b'rit YHWH, and because he has done folly b'Yisra'el.

7:16 So Y'hoshu`a rose up early ba-boqer, and brought Yisra'el near by their tribes; and the tribe of Yehudah was taken:  17 and he brought near mishpachat Yehudah; and he took mishpachat ha-Zarchi: and he brought near mishpachat ha-Zarchi man by man; and Zavdi was taken:  18 and he brought near his bayit man by man; and `Akhan, benn-Karmi, ben-Zavdi, ben-Zerach, of the tribe of Yehudah, was taken.  19 VayoY'hoshu`a el`Akhan, B'ni, please give kavod la-YHWH, Elohei Yisra'el, and make confession to him; and tell me now what you have done; don't hide it from me.  20 `Akhan answered Y'hoshu`a, and said, Of a truth I have sinned against YHWH, Elohei Yisra'el, and thus and thus have I done:  21 when I saw among the spoil a goodly mantle of Shin'ar, and two hundred sh'kalim kesef, and a wedge of zahav of fifty sh'kalim weight, then I coveted them, and took them; v'hinneh, they are hid ba-aretz in the midst of my tent, and ha-kesef under it.

7:22 So Y'hoshu`a sent malakhim, and they ran to ha-ohel; v'hinneh, it was hid in his ohel, v'hakesef under it.  23 They took them from the midst of ha-ohel, and brought them el-Y'hoshu`a, v'el kol b'nei Yisra'el; and they laid them down before YHWH.  24 Y'hoshu`a, and all Yisra'el with him, took `Akhan ben-Zerach, v'et-ha-kesef, and the mantle, and the wedge of zahav, and his banim, and his banot, and his oxen, and his chamorim, and his sheep, and his ohel, and all that he had: and they brought them up to the valley of `Akhor.  25 Vayomer Y'hoshu`a, Why have you troubled us?  YHWH shall trouble you ba-yom hazeh.  kol Yisra'el stoned him with stones; and they burned them ba-esh, and stoned them with stones.  26 They raised over him a great heap of stones, `ad ha-yom hazeh; and YHWH turned from the fierceness of his anger.  Therefore shem ha-maqom ha-hu was called "The valley of `Akhor" `ad ha-yom hazeh.

8:1 Vayomer YHWH el-Yehoshu`a, Don't be afraid, neither be dismayed: take all the people of war with you, and arise, go up to `Ai; behold, I have given into your hand the melekh ha`Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land;  2 You shall do la`Ai u'l'malkah as you did to Y'richo u'l'malkah: only the spoil of it, and the cattle of it, shall you take for a prey to yourselves: set you an ambush la`ir behind it.

8:3 So Yehoshu`a arose, and all the people of war, to go up to `Ai: and Yehoshu`a chose out thirty thousand men, the mighty men of valor, and sent them forth by night.  4 He commanded them, saying, Behold, you shall lie in ambush against the city, behind the city; don't go very far min-ha`ir, but be all ready:  5 va-ani v'khol ha`am who are with me, will approach el-ha`ir.  V-hayah, when they come out against us, ka-asher ba-rishonah, that we will flee before them;  6 and they will come out after us, until we have drawn them away min-ha`ir; for they will say, They flee before us, ka-asher ba-rishonah: so we will flee before them;  7 and you shall rise up from the ambush, and take possession of ha`ir: for YHWH Eloheikhem will deliver it into your hand.  8 V'hayah, when you have seized on ha`ir, that you shall set ha`ir ba-esh; ki-d'var YHWH shall you do: behold, I have commanded you.  9 Yehoshu`a sent them forth; and they went to set up the ambush, and stayed bein Beit-El u'vein ha`Ai, mi-yam ha`Ai: but Yehoshu`a lodged that night among the people.

8:10 Yehoshu`a arose up early ba-boker, and mustered ha`am, and went up, hu v'ziqnei Yisra'el, lifnei ha`am ha`Ai.  11 V'khol ha`am, even the men of war who were with him, went up, and drew near, and came before ha`ir, and encamped on the north side of `Ai: now there was a valley between him and ha`Ai.  12 He took about five thousand men, and set them in ambush bein Beit-El u'vein ha`Ai, mi-yam ha`ir.  13 So they set the people, even all the host who was mi-tzafon ha`ir, and their liers-in-wait who were mi-yam la-ir; and Yehoshu`a went ba-laila ha-hu into the midst of the valley.  14 Va-y'hi, when melekh ha`Ai saw it, that they hurried and rose up early, and anshei ha`ir went out against Yisra'el to battle, hu v'khol `amo, la-mo`ed, lifnei ha`Aravah; but he didn't know that there was an ambush against him behind ha`ir.  15 Yehoshu`a v'khol Yisra'el made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by derekh ha-midbar.  16 Kol ha`am ba`Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Yehoshu`a, and were drawn away min-ha`ir.  17 There was not a man left ba`Ai u'Veit-El, who didn't go out acharei Yisra'el: and they left the city open, and pursued acharei Yisra'el.

8:18 Vayomer YHWH el-Yehoshu`a, Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand el-ha`Ai; for I will give it into your hand. Yehoshu`a stretched out the javelin that was in his hand el-ha`ir.  19 The ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand, and entered into ha`ir, and took it; and they hurried and set ha`ir ba-esh.  20 When anshei ha`Ai looked behind them, they saw, v'hinneh, the smoke of ha`ir ascended up to ha-shamayim, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: v'ha`am who fled to ha-midbar turned back on the pursuers.  21 When Yehoshu`a v'khol Yisra'el saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and killed anshei ha-`Ai.  22 The others came forth min ha`ir against them; so they were in the midst of Yisra'el, some on this side, and some on that side: and they struck them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.  23 Melekh ha`Ai they took alive, and brought him to Yehoshu`a.

8:24 It happened, when Yisra'el had made an end of killing all the inhabitants of ha`Ai ba-sadeh ba-midbar in which they pursued them, and they were all fallen by the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that kol-Yisra'el returned to ha`Ai, and struck it with the edge of the sword.  25 All that fell ba-yom ha-hu, me-ish v`ad-ishshah, were twelve thousand, kol anshei ha`Ai.  26 For Yehoshu`a didn't draw back his hand, with which he stretched out the javelin, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of ha`Ai.  27 Only ha-b'hemah and the spoil of ha`ir ha-hi Yisra'el took for prey to themselves, ki'd'var YHWH which he commanded Yehoshu`a.  28 So Yehoshu`a burnt ha`Ai, and made it a heap forever, even a desolation, `ad ha-yom hazeh.  29 Melekh ha`Ai he hanged on a tree until the time of ha`arev: and at the going down of ha-shemesh, Yehoshu`a commanded, and they took his body down min-ha`etz, and cast it at the entrance of the gate of ha`ir, and raised thereon a great heap of stones, `ad ha-yom hazeh.

8:30 Then Yehoshu`a built a mizbeach la-YHWH, Elohei Yisra'el, b'har `Eval,  31 as Mosheh `eved-YHWH commanded b'nei Yisra'el, ka-katuv b'sefer Torat Mosheh, mizbeach of uncut stones, on which no man had lifted up any iron: and they offered thereon `olot la-YHWH, and sacrificed sh'lamim.  32 He wrote there on the stones a copy of Torat Mosheh, which he wrote, lifnei b'nei Yisra'el.  33 V'khol Yisra'el, and their z'qenim and officers, and their shoftim, stood on this side of ha-aron and on that side before ha-kohanim ha-L'vi'im, who bore aron b'rit-YHWH, as well the foreigner as the native; half of them in front of har G'rizim, and half of them in front of har `Eval; as Mosheh eved-YHWH had commanded ba-rishonah, that they should bless ha`am Yisra'el.  34 Afterward he read kol divrei ha-Torah, the blessing and the curse, k'khol ha-katuv b'sefer ha-Torah.  35 Lo-hayah davar of all that Mosheh commanded, which Yehoshu`a didn't read before kol qahal Yisra'el v'ha-nashim, and the little ones, v'ha-ger who were among them.

9:1 Va-y'hi, when kol-ha-m'lakhim who were beyond ha-Yarden ba-har u'va'sh'felah, and on all the shore of ha-yam ha-gadol in front of ha-L'vanon, ha-Chitti v'ha-Emori, ha-K'na'ani, ha-P'rizzi, ha-Chivvi, v'ha-Y'vusi, heard of it;  2 that they gathered themselves together, to fight with Yehoshu`a v`im Yisra'el, with one accord.

9:3 But when the inhabitants of Giv`on heard what Yehoshu`a had done to Y'richo v'la`Ai,  4 they also resorted to a ruse, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks on their chamorim, and wine-skins, old and torn and bound up,  5 and old and patched shoes on their feet, and old garments on them; and all the lechem of their provision was dry and was become moldy.  6 They went to Yehoshu`a to the camp at ha-Gilgal, and said to him, and v'el ish Yisra'el, We are come from a far country: now therefore make you a b'rit with us.  7 Va-yomer ish-Yisra'el el-ha-Chivvi, What if you dwell among us; and how shall we make a b'rit with you?  8 They said to Yehoshu`a, Your avadim anachnu.  Vayomer Yehoshu`a to them, Mi attem? and from whence come you?  9 Vayomru to him, Me-eretz very far your avadim are come because of shem YHWH Eloheikha: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did b'Mitzrayim,  10 and all that he did to the two malkhei ha-Emori, who were beyond ha-Yarden, l'Sichon melekh Cheshbon, u'l`Og melekh ha-Bashan, asher b`Ashtarot.  11 Our z'qenim and all the inhabitants of our country spoke to us, saying, Take provision in your hand for ha-derekh, and go to meet them, and tell them, We are your `avadim: and now make you a b'rit with us.  12 This our lechem we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go to you; but now, hinneh, it is dry, and is become moldy:  13 and these wine-skins, which we filled, were chadashim, v'hinneh, they are torn: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of ha-derekh me'od.  14 Ha-anashim took of their provision, and didn't ask counsel al-pi YHWH.  15 Yehoshu`a made shalom with them, and made a b'rit with them, to let them live: and the princes of ha`edah swore to them.

9:16 It happened at the end of sh'loshet yamim after they had made a b'rit with them, that they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they lived among them.  17 B'nei Yisra'el traveled, and came to their cities b'yom ha-sh'lishi.  Now their cities were Giv`on, v'ha-K'firah, u'V'erot, v'Qiryat-Y`arim.  18 B'nei Yisra'el didn't strike them, because the princes of ha`edah had sworn to them ba-YHWH, Elohei Yisra'el.  Kol ha`edah murmured against ha-n'si'im.  19 But kol ha-n'si'im said el-kol-ha-`edah, We have sworn to them by YHWH Elohei Yisra'el: now therefore we may not touch them.  20 This we will do to them, and let them live; lest wrath be on us, because of the oath which we swore to them.  21 Va-yomru alehem ha-n'si'im, Let them live: so they became wood cutters and drawers of mayim l'kol ha`edah, as ha-n'si'im had spoken to them.

9:22 Yehoshu`a called for them, and he spoke to them, saying, Why have you deceived us, saying, We are very far from you; when you dwell among us?  23 Now therefore you are cursed, and there shall never fail to be of you bondservants, both wood cutters and drawers of mayim for the house of my Elohim.  24 They answered Yehoshu`a va-yomru, Because it was certainly told your avadim, how that YHWH your Elohim commanded Mosheh his `eved to give you kol ha-aretz, and to destroy all the inhabitants of ha-aretz from before you; therefore we were sore afraid for our lives because of you, and have done this thing.  25 Now, behold, we are in your hand: as it seems good and right to you to do to us, do.  26 So did he to them, and delivered them mi-yad b'nei Yisra'el, that they didn't kill them.  27 That day Yehoshu`a made those wood cutters and drawers of mayim la`edah u'l'mizbach YHWH, ad-ha-yom hazeh, al-ha-maqom which he should choose.

CHAPTER 10
Audio (Open in new tab or window to read along.)
10:1 Va'y'hi, when Adoni-Tzedek melekh Y'rushalaim heard how Yehoshu`a had taken ha`Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Y'richo and her king, so he had done la`Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Giv'on had made shalom with Yisra'el, and were among them;  2 that they feared greatly, because Giv'on was an `ir g'dol, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than ha`Ai, and all the anashim of it were gibborim.  3 Therefore Adoni-Tzedek, melekh Y'rushalaim sent to Hoham melekh Chevron, v'el-Pir'am melekh-Yarmut, v'el-Yafi`a  melek-Lakhish, v'el-D'vir melekh-`Eglon, lemor,  4 Come up to me, and help me, and let us strike Giv`on; for it has made shalom with Yehoshu`a  v'et b'nei Yisra'el.  5 Therefore the five malkhei ha-Emori - melekh Y'rushalaim, melekh Chevron, melekh Yarmut, melekh Lakhish, melekh `Eglon - gathered themselves together, and went up, they and all their hosts, and encamped against Giv'on, and made war against it.

10:6 Anshei Giv`on sent to Yehoshu`a  to the camp to Gilgal, lemor, Don't slack your hand from your avadim; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for kol-malkhei ha-Emori that dwell in ha-har are gathered together against us.  7 So Yehoshu`a went up min-ha-Gilgal, hu v'khol`am of war with him, and khol gibborei of valor.  8 Vayomer YHWH el-Y'hoshu`a, Don't fear them: for I have delivered them into your hands; there shall not a man of them stand before you.  9 Yehoshu`a therefore came on them suddenly; for he went up min-ha-Gilgal kol-ha-lailah.  10 YHWH confused them lifnei Yisra'el, and he killed them with a great slaughter b'Giv'on, and chased them by the way of the ascent of Beit-Choron, and struck them `ad-`Azeka, v`ad-Maqqedah.  11 va'y'hi, as they fled mi-p'nei Yisra'el, while they were at the descent of Beit-Choron, that YHWH cast down great stones min-ha-shamayim `ad-`Azeka, and they died: they were more who died with the hailstones than they whom b'nei Yisra'el killed with the sword.

10:12 Then spoke Yehoshu`a la-YHWH in the day when YHWH delivered up ha`Emori lifnei b'nei Yisra'el; and he said in the sight of Yisra'el, Shemesh, stand still b'Giv`on; You, Moon, in the valley of Ayalon.  13 Ha-shemesh stood still, and the moon stayed until the nation had avenged themselves of their enemies. Isn't this written `al-sefer ha-Yashar?  Ha-shemesh stayed in the midst of ha-shamayim, and didn't hurry to go down about a whole day.  14 V'lo hayah ka-yom ha-hu before it or after it, that YHWH listened b'qol ish: for YHWH fought for Yisra'el.

10:15 Yehoshu`a returned, v'khol Yisra'el with him, to the camp to ha-Gilgal.

10:16 These five m'lakhim fled, and hid themselves in the cave b'Maqqedah.  17 It was told Yehoshu`a, saying, The five m'lakhim are found, hidden in the cave b'Maqqedah.  18 Vayomer Yehoshu`a, Roll great stones to the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to keep them:  19 but don't stay; pursue after your enemies, and strike the hindmost of them; don't allow them to enter into their cities: for YHWH Elohekhem has delivered them into your hand.  20 Va'y'hi, when Yehoshu`a u'v'nei Yisra'el had made an end of killing them with a very great slaughter, until they were consumed, and the remnant which remained of them had entered into the fortified cities,  21 that kol-ha`am returned to the camp to Yehoshu`a at Maqqedah b'shalom: none moved his tongue against any of the b'nei Yisra'el.

10:22 Vayomer Yehoshu`a, Open the mouth of the cave, and bring forth those five m'lakhim to me out of the cave.  23 They did so, and brought forth those five m'lakhim to him out of the cave, et Y'rushalaim, et-melekh Chevron, et-melekh Yarmut, et-melekh Lakhish, et-melekh `Eglon.  24 Va'y'hi, when they brought forth ha-m'lakhim ha-elleh el-Yehoshu`a, va'yikra Yehoshu`a el-kol ish Yisra'el, and said to the chiefs of the men of war who went with him, Come near, put your feet on the necks of ha-m'lakhim ha-elleh.  They came near, and put their feet on the necks of them.  25 Vayomer alehim Yehoshu`a , Don't be afraid, nor be dismayed; be strong and of good courage: for thus shall YHWH do to all your enemies against whom you fight.  26 Afterward Yehoshu`a struck them, and put them to death, and hanged them on five `etzim: and they were hanging `al-ha-etzim `ad-ha-`arev.  27 Va'y'hi at the time of the going down of ha-shemesh, that Yehoshu`a commanded, and they took them down off ha`etzim, and cast them into the cave in which they had hidden themselves, and laid great stones on the mouth of the cave, `ad-ha-yom hazeh.

10:28 Yehoshu`a took Maqqedah ba-yom ha-hu, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and the king of it: he utterly destroyed them v'khol nefesh who were therein; he left none remaining; and he did l'melekh Maqqedah as he had done l'melekh Y'rikho.

10:29 Yehoshu`a passed mi-Maqqedah, v'khol-Yisra'el with him, to Livnah, and fought against Livnah:  30 and YHWH delivered it also, and the melelk of it, b'yad Yisra'el; and he struck it with the edge of the sword, and kol ha-nefesh who were therein; he left none remaining in it; and he did to the melelk of it as he had done l'melelk Y'richo.

10:31 Yehoshu`a v'khol Yisra'el with him passed mi-Livnah, to Lakhish, and encamped against it, and fought against it:  32 and YHWH delivered Lakhish b'yad Yisra'el; and he took it on the second day, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and kol-ha-nefesh who were therein, according to all that he had done l'Livnah.

10:33 Then Horam melekh Gezer came up to help Lakhish; and Yehoshu`a struck him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.

10:34 Yehoshu`a v'khol Yisra'el with him passed mi-Lakhish,to `Eglon; and they encamped against it, and fought against it;  35 and they took it ba-yom ha-hu, and struck it with the edge of the sword; and kol-ha-nefesh who were therein he utterly destroyed ba-yom ha-hu, according to all that he had done to Lakhish.

10:36 Yehoshu`a v'khol Yisra'el with him went up me`Eglon to Chevron; and they fought against it:  37 and they took it, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and the melekh of it, and all the cities of it, and kol ha-nefesh who were therein; he left none remaining, according to all that he had done to `Eglon; but he utterly destroyed it, and kol ha-nefesh who were therein.

10:38 Yehoshu`a returned, v'khol Yisra'el
with him, to Devir, and fought against it:  39 and he took it, and the melekh of it, and all the cities of it; and they struck them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed kol ha-nefesh who were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Chevron, so he did to Devir, and to the melekh of it; as he had done also to Livnah, and to the melekh of it.

10:40 So Yehoshu`a struck kol ha-aretz, ha-har v'ha-negev v'ha-sh'felah, and the slopes, and all their m'lakhim: he left none remaining, but he utterly destroyed all that breathed, as YHWH, Elohei Yisra'el, commanded.  41 Yehoshu`a struck them from Kadesh-Barnea even to `Aza, and all the country of Goshen, even to Giv'on.  42 All these kings and their land did Yehoshu`a take at one time, because YHWH, the Elohe of Yisra'el, fought for Yisra'el.  43 Yehoshu`a returned, and all Yisra'el with him, to the camp to Gilgal.

PEREQ ‏יא‎
CHAPTER 11

11:1 It happened, when Yavin king of Chatzor heard of it, that he sent to Yovav king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Akhshaf,  2 and to the kings who were on the north, in the hill-country, and in the `Aravah south of Kinnarot, and in the lowland, and in the heights of Dor on the west,  3 to the Kana'ani on the east and on the west, and the Amori, and the Chittite, and the Perizzi, and the Yevusi in the hill-country, and the Chivvi under Chermon in the land of Mitzpah.  4 They went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is on the sea-shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many.  5 All these kings met together; and they came and encamped together at the waters of Merom, to fight with Yisra'el.

11:6 YHWH said to Yehoshu`a, Don't be afraid because of them; for tomorrow at this time will I deliver them up all slain before Yisra'el: you shall hamstring their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.  7 So Yehoshu`a came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly, and fell on them.  8 YHWH delivered them into the hand of Yisra'el, and they struck them, and chased them to great Tzidon, and to Misrefot-Mayim, and to the valley of Mitzpeh eastward; and they struck them, until they left them none remaining.  9 Yehoshu`a did to them as YHWH bade him: he hamstrung their horses, and burnt their chariots with fire.

11:10 Yehoshu`a turned back at that time, and took Chatzor, and struck the king of it with the sword: for Chatzor before was the head of all those kingdoms.  11 They struck all the nephesh who were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them; there was none left who breathed: and he burnt Chatzor with fire.  12 All the cities of those kings, and all the kings of them, did Yehoshu`a take, and he struck them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed them; as Mosheh the servant of YHWH commanded.  13 But as for the cities that stood on their mounds, Yisra'el burned none of them, save Chatzor only; that did Yehoshu`a burn.  14 All the spoil of these cities, and the cattle, the children of Yisra'el took for a prey to themselves; but every man they struck with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, neither left they any who breathed.  15 As YHWH commanded Mosheh his servant, so did Mosheh command Yehoshu`a: and so did Yehoshu`a; he left nothing undone of all that YHWH commanded Mosheh.

11:16 So Yehoshu`a took all that land, the hill-country, and all the South, and all the land of Goshen, and the lowland, and the `Aravah, and the hill-country of Yisra'el, and the lowland of the same;  17 from Mount Chalak, that goes up to Se'ir, even to Ba'al-Gad in the valley of Levanon under Mount Chermon: and all their kings he took, and struck them, and put them to death.  18 Yehoshu`a made war a long time with all those kings.  19 There was not a city that made shalom with the children of Yisra'el, save the Chivvi the inhabitants of Giv'on: they took all in battle.  20 For it was of YHWH to harden their hearts, to come against Yisra'el in battle, that he might utterly destroy them, that they might have no favor, but that he might destroy them, as YHWH commanded Mosheh.

11:21 Yehoshu`a came at that time, and cut off the `Anakim from the hill-country, from Chevron, from Devir, from `Anav, and from all the hill-country of Yehudah, and from all the hill-country of Yisra'el: Yehoshu`a utterly destroyed them with their cities.  22 There was none of the `Anakim left in the land of the children of Yisra'el: only in `Aza, in Gat, and in Ashdod, did some remain.  23 So Yehoshu`a took the whole land, according to all that YHWH spoke to Mosheh; and Yehoshu`a gave it for an inheritance to Yisra'el according to their divisions by their tribes. The land had rest from war.

CHAPTER 12

12:1 Now these are the kings of the land, whom the children of Yisra'el struck, and possessed their land beyond ha-Yarden toward the sunrise, from the valley of the Arnon to Mount Chermon, and all the `Aravah eastward:  2 Sichon king of the Amori, who lived in Cheshbon, and ruled from `Aro'er, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and half Gil'ad, even to the river Yabbok, the border of the children of `Ammon;  3 and the `Aravah to the sea of Kinnarot, eastward, and to the sea of the `Aravah, even the Salt Sea, eastward, the way to Beth-jeshimoth; and on the south, under the slopes of Pisgah:  4 and the border of `Og king of Bashan, of the remnant of the Refa'im, who lived at `Ashtarot and at Edre'i,  5 and ruled in Mount Chermon, and in Salkhah, and in all Bashan, to the border of the Geshuri and the Ma'akhati, and half Gil'ad, the border of Sichon king of Cheshbon.  6 Mosheh the servant of YHWH and the children of Yisra'el struck them: and Mosheh the servant of YHWH gave it for a possession to the Re'uveni, and the Gadi, and the half-tribe of Menashsheh.

12:7 These are the kings of the land whom Yehoshu`a and the children of Yisra'el struck beyond ha-Yarden westward, from Ba'al-Gad in the valley of Levanon even to Mount Chalak, that goes up to Se'ir; and Yehoshu`a gave it to the tribes of Yisra'el for a possession according to their divisions;  8 in the hill-country, and in the lowland, and in the `Aravah, and in the slopes, and in the wilderness, and in the South; the Chittite, the Amori, and the Kana'ani, the Perizzi, the Chivvi, and the Yevusi:  9 the king of Yericho, one; the king of `Ai, which is beside Beit-El, one;  10 the king of Yerushalayim, one; the king of Chevron, one;  11 the king of Yarmut, one; the king of Lakhish, one;  12 the king of `Eglon, one; the king of Gezer, one;  13 the king of Devir, one; the king of Geder, one;  14 the king of Chormah, one; the king of `Arad, one;  15 melekh Livnah echad; melekh `Adullam, echad;  16 the king of Maqqedah, one; the king of Beit-El, one;  17 the king of Tappuach, one; the king of Chefer, one;  18 the king of Afek, one; the king of Lassharon, one;  19 the king of Madon, one; the king of Chatzor, one;  20 the king of Shimron-meron, one; the king of Akhshaf, one;  21 the king of Ta'nakh, one; the king of Megiddo, one;  22 the king of Kedesh, one; the king of Yokne'am in Karmel, one;  23 the king of Dor in the height of Dor, one; the king of Goyim in Gilgal, one;  24 the king of Tirtzah, one: all the kings thirty-one.

CHAPTER 13

13:1 Now Yehoshu`a was old and well stricken in years; and YHWH said to him, You are old and well stricken in years, and there remains yet very much land to be possessed.  2 This is the land that yet remains: all the regions of the Pelishtim, and all the Geshuri;  3 from the Shichor, which is before Mitzrayim, even to the border of `Ekron northward, which is reckoned to the Kana'anim; the five princes of the Pelishtim; the `Azati, and the Ashdodi, the Eshkeloni, the Gitti, and the `Ekroni; also the `Avvim,  4 on the south; all the land of the Kana`anim, and Me'arah that belongs to the Tzidonim, to Afek, to the border of the Amori;  5 and the land of the Givli, and all Levanon, toward the sunrise, from Ba'al-Gad under Mount Chermon to the entrance of Chamat;  6 all the inhabitants of the hill-country from Levanon to Misrefot-Mayim, even all the Tzidonim; them will I drive out from before the children of Yisra'el: only allot you it to Yisra'el for an inheritance, as I have commanded you.  7 Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes, and the half-tribe of Menashsheh.

13:8 With him the Re'uveni and the Gadi received their inheritance, which Mosheh gave them, beyond ha-Yarden eastward, even as Mosheh the servant of YHWH gave them:  9 from `Aro'er, that is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the plain of Medeva to Divon;  10 and all the cities of Sichon king of the Amori, who reigned in Cheshbon, to the border of the children of `Ammon;  11 and Gil'ad, and the border of the Geshuri and Ma'akhati, and all Mount Chermon, and all Bashan to Salkhah;  12 all the kingdom of `Og in Bashan, who reigned in `Ashtarot and in Edre'i (the same was left of the remnant of the Refa'im); for these did Mosheh strike, and drove them out.  13 Nevertheless the children of Yisra'el didn't drive out the Geshuri, nor the Ma'akhati: but Geshur and Ma'akhat dwell in the midst of Yisra'el to this day.

13:14 Only to the tribe of Levi he gave no inheritance; the offerings of YHWH, the Elohe of Yisra'el, made by fire are his inheritance, as he spoke to him.

13:15 Mosheh gave to the tribe of the children of Re'uven according to their families.  16 Their border was from `Aro'er, that is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the plain by Medeva;  17 Cheshbon, and all its cities that are in the plain; Divon, and Bamot-Ba'al, and Beit-Ba'al-Me'on,  18 and Yahatz, and Kedemot, and Mefa'at,  19 and Kiryatayim, and Sivmah, and Tzeret-Hashachar in the mount of the valley,  20 and Beit-Pe'or, and the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth,  21 and all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sichon king of the Amori, who reigned in Cheshbon, whom Mosheh struck with the chiefs of Midyan, Evi, and Rekem, and Tzur, and Chur, and Reva, the princes of Sichon, who lived in the land.  22 Bil'am also the son of Be'or, the soothsayer, did the children of Yisra'el kill with the sword among the rest of their slain.  23 The border of the children of Re'uven was ha-Yarden, and the border of it. This was the inheritance of the children of Re'uven according to their families, the cities and the villages of it.

13:24 Mosheh gave to the tribe of Gad, to the children of Gad, according to their families.  25 Their border was Ya'zer, and all the cities of Gil'ad, and half the land of the children of `Ammon, to `Aro'er that is before Rabbah;  26 and from Cheshbon to Ramat-Hamitzpeh, and Betonim; and from Machanayim to the border of Devir;  27 and in the valley, Beit-Haram, and Beit-Nimrah, and Sukkot, and Tzafon, the rest of the kingdom of Sichon king of Cheshbon, ha-Yarden and the border of it, to the uttermost part of the sea of Kinneret beyond ha-Yarden eastward.  28 This is the inheritance of the children of Gad according to their families, the cities and the villages of it.

13:29 Mosheh gave inheritance to the half-tribe of Menashsheh: and it was for the half-tribe of the children of Menashsheh according to their families.  30 Their border was from Machanayim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of `Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Ya'ir, which are in Bashan, sixty cities:  31 and half Gil'ad, and `Ashtarot, and Edre'i, the cities of the kingdom of `Og in Bashan, were for the children of Makhir the son of Menashsheh, even for the half of the children of Makhir according to their families.

13:32 These are the inheritances which Mosheh distributed in the plains of Mo'av, beyond ha-Yarden at Yericho, eastward.  33 But to the tribe of Levi Mosheh gave no inheritance: YHWH, the Elohe of Yisra'el, is their inheritance, as he spoke to them.

PEREQ ‏יד‎
CHAPTER 14

14:1 These are the inheritances which the children of Yisra'el took in the land of Kana'an, which El'azar the kohen, and Yehoshu`a the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers' houses of the tribes of the children of Yisra'el, distributed to them,  2 by the lot of their inheritance, as YHWH commanded by Mosheh, for the nine tribes, and for the half-tribe.  3 For Mosheh had given the inheritance of the two tribes and the half-tribe beyond ha-Yarden: but to the Levites he gave no inheritance among them.  4 For the children of Yosef were two tribes, Menashsheh and Efrayim: and they gave no portion to the Levites in the land, save cities to dwell in, with the suburbs of it for their cattle and for their substance.  5 As YHWH commanded Mosheh, so the children of Yisra'el did; and they divided the land.

14:6 Then the children of Yehudah drew near to Yehoshu`a in Gilgal: and Kalev the son of Yefunneh the Kenizzi said to him, You know the thing that YHWH spoke to Mosheh the man of Elohim concerning me and concerning you in Kadesh-Barnea.  7 Forty years old was I when Mosheh the servant of YHWH sent me from Kadesh-Barnea to spy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in my heart.  8 Nevertheless my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; but I wholly followed YHWH my Elohe.  9 Mosheh swore on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon your foot has trodden shall be an inheritance to you and to your children forever, because you have wholly followed YHWH my Elohe.  10 Now, behold, YHWH has kept me alive, as he spoke, these forty-five years, from the time that YHWH spoke this word to Mosheh, while Yisra'el walked in the wilderness: and now, behold, I am this day eighty-five years old.  11 As yet I am as strong this day as I as in the day that Mosheh sent me: as my strength was then, even so is my strength now, for war, and to go out and to come in.  12 Now therefore give me this hill-country, of which YHWH spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the `Anakim were there, and cities great and fortified: it may be that YHWH will be with me, and I shall drive them out, as YHWH spoke.

14:13 Yehoshu`a blessed him; and he gave Chevron to Kalev the son of Yefunneh for an inheritance.  14 Therefore Chevron became the inheritance of Kalev the son of Yefunneh the Kenizzi to this day; because that he wholly followed YHWH, the Elohe of Yisra'el.  15 Now the name of Chevron before was Kiryat-Arba; which Arba was the greatest man among the `Anakim. The land had rest from war.

CHAPTER 15

15:1 The lot for the tribe of the children of Yehudah according to their families was to the border of Edom, even to the wilderness of Tzin southward, at the uttermost part of the south.  2 Their south border was from the uttermost part of the Salt Sea, from the bay that looks southward;  3 and it went out southward of the ascent of `Akrabbim, and passed along to Tzin, and went up by the south of Kadesh-Barnea, and passed along by Chetzron, and went up to Addar, and turned about to Karka;  4 and it passed along to `Atzmon, and went out at the brook of Mitzrayim; and the goings out of the border were at the sea: this shall be your south border.  5 The east border was the Salt Sea, even to the end of ha-Yarden. The border of the north quarter was from the bay of the sea at the end of ha-Yarden;  6 and the border went up to Beit-Choglah, and passed along by the north of Beit-Ha'aravah; and the border went up to the stone of Bohan the son of Re'uven;  7 and the border went up to Devir from the valley of `Akhor, and so northward, looking toward Gilgal, that is over against the ascent of Adummim, which is on the south side of the river; and the border passed along to the waters of `En-Shemesh, and the goings out of it were at `En-Rogel;  8 and the border went up by the valley of the son of Hinnom to the side of the Yevusi southward (the same is Yerushalayim); and the border went up to the top of the mountain that lies before the valley of Hinnom westward, which is at the uttermost part of the valley of Refa'im northward;  9 and the border extended from the top of the mountain to the spring of the waters of Nefto'ach, and went out to the cities of Mount `Efron; and the border extended to Ba'alah (the same is Kiryat-Ye'arim);  10 and the border turned about from Ba'alah westward to Mount Se'ir, and passed along to the side of Mount Ye'arim on the north (the same is Kesalon), and went down to Beth-shemesh, and passed along by Timnah;  11 and the border went out to the side of `Ekron northward; and the border extended to Shikron, and passed along to Mount Ba'alah, and went out at Yavne'el; and the goings out of the border were at the sea.  12 The west border was to the great sea, and the border of it. This is the border of the children of Yehudah round about according to their families.

15:13 To Kalev the son of Yefunneh he gave a portion among the children of Yehudah, according to the command of YHWH to Yehoshu`a, even Kiryat-Arba, which Arba was the father of `Anak (the same is Chevron).  14 Kalev drove out there the three sons of `Anak: Sheshai, and Achiman, and Talmai, the children of `Anak.  15 He went up there against the inhabitants of Devir: now the name of Devir before was Kiryat Sepher.  16 Kalev said, He who strikes Kiryat Sepher, and takes it, to him will I give `Akhsah my daughter as wife.  17 `Otni'el the son of Kenaz, the brother of Kalev, took it: and he gave him `Akhsah his daughter as wife.  18 It happened, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she alighted from off her donkey; and Kalev said, What would you?  19 She said, Give me a blessing; for that you have set me in the land of the South, give me also springs of water. He gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

15:20 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Yehudah according to their families.  21 The uttermost cities of the tribe of the children of Yehudah toward the border of Edom in the South were Kavtz'el, and `Eder, and Yagur,  22 and Kinah, and Dimonah, and `Ad'adah,  23 and Kedesh, and Chatzor, and Yitnan,  24 Zif, and Telem, and Be'alot,  25 Chazor, Hadattah, Keriyot, Chetzron (the same is Chatzor),  26 Amam, and Shema, and Moladah,  27 and Chatzar-Gaddah, and Cheshmon, and Beit-Pelet,  28 and Chatzar-Shu'al, and Be'er-Sheva, and Bizyotyah,  29 Ba'alah, and `Iyim, and `Etzem,  30 and Eltolad, and Kesil, and Chormah,  31 and Tziklag, and Madmannah, and Sansannah,  32 and Leva'ot, and Shilchim, and `Ayin, and Rimmon: all the cities are twenty-nine, with their villages.

15:33 In the lowland, Eshta'ol, and Tzor`ah, and Ashnah,  34 and Zanoach, and `En-Gannim, Tappuach, and `Enam,  35 Yarmut, and `Adullam, Sokho, and `Azeka,  36 and Sha'arayim, and `Aditayim, and Gederah, and Gederotayim; fourteen cities with their villages.  37 Tzenan, and Chadashah, and Migdal-gad,  38 and Dil'an, and Mitzpeh, and Yokte'el,  39 Lakhish, and Botzkat, and `Eglon,  40 and Kabbon, and Lachmas, and Kitlish,  41 and Kederot, Beit-Dagon, and Na'amah, and Maqqedah; sixteen cities with their villages.

15:42 Livnah, and `Eter, and `Ashan,  43 and Yiftach, and Ashnah, and Netziv,  44 and Ke'ilah, and Akhziv, and Mareshah; nine cities with their villages.

15:45 `Ekron, with its towns and its villages;  46 from `Ekron even to the sea, all that were by the side of Ashdod, with their villages.

15:47 Ashdod, its towns and its villages; `Aza, its towns and its villages; to the brook of Mitzrayim, and the great sea, and the border of it.

15:48 In the hill-country, Shamir, and Yattir, and Sokho,  49 and Dannah, and Kiryat Sannah (the same is Devir),  50 and `Anav, and Eshtemoh, and `Anim,  51 and Goshen, and Cholon, and Giloh; eleven cities with their villages.

15:52 Arav, and Dumah, and Esh'an,  53 and Yanus, and Beit-Tappuach, and Afekah,  54 and Chumtah, and Kiryat-Arba (the same is Chevron), and Tzi'or; nine cities with their villages.

15:55 Ma'on, Karmel, and Zif, and Yutah,  56 and Yizre'el, and Yokde'am, and Zanoach,  57 Kayin, Gevah, and Timnah; ten cities with their villages.

15:58 Chalchul, Beit-Tzur, and Gedor,  59 and Ma'arat, and Beit-`Anot, and Eltekon; six cities with their villages.

15:60 Kiryat-Ba'al (the same is Kiryat-Ye'arim), and Rabbah; two cities with their villages.

15:61 In the wilderness, Beit-Ha'aravah, Middin, and Sekhakhah,  62 and Nivshan, and the `Ir-Hamelach, and `En-Gedi; six cities with their villages.

15:63 As for the Yevusi, the inhabitants of Yerushalayim, the children of Yehudah couldn't drive them out: but the Yevusi dwell with the children of Yehudah at Yerushalayim to this day.

CHAPTER 16

16:1 The lot came out for the children of Yosef from ha-Yarden at Yericho, at the waters of Yericho on the east, even the wilderness, going up from Yericho through the hill-country to Beit-El;  2 and it went out from Beit-El to Luz, and passed along to the border of the Arki to `Atrot;  3 and it went down westward to the border of the Yafleti, to the border of Beit-Choron the lower, even to Gezer; and the goings out of it were at the sea.

16:4 The children of Yosef, Menashsheh and Efrayim, took their inheritance.

16:5 The border of the children of Efrayim according to their families was thus: the border of their inheritance eastward was `Atarot-Addar, to Beit-Choron the upper;  6 and the border went out westward at Mikhmetat on the north; and the border turned about eastward to Ta'anat-Shiloh, and passed along it on the east of Yano'ach;  7 and it went down from Yano'ach to `Atrot, and to Na'arah, and reached to Yericho, and went out at ha-Yarden.  8 From Tappuach the border went along westward to the brook of Kanah; and the goings out of it were at the sea. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Efrayim according to their families;  9 together with the cities which were set apart for the children of Efrayim in the midst of the inheritance of the children of Menashsheh, all the cities with their villages.  10 They didn't drive out the Kana'anim who lived in Gezer: but the Kana'anim dwell in the midst of Efrayim to this day, and are become servants to do forced labor.

PEREQ ‏יז‎
CHAPTER 17

17:1 This was the lot for the tribe of Menashsheh; for he was the firstborn of Yosef. As for Makhir the firstborn of Menashsheh, the father of Gil'ad, because he was a man of war, therefore he had Gil'ad and Bashan.  2 So the lot was for the rest of the children of Menashsheh according to their families: for the children of Avi-Ezer, and for the children of Chelek, and for the children of Asri'el, and for the children of Shekhem, and for the children of Chefer, and for the children of Shemida: these were the male children of Menashsheh the son of Yosef according to their families.

17:3 But Tzelohchad, the son of Chefer, the son of Gil'ad, the son of Makhir, the son of Menashsheh, had no sons, but daughters: and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlach, and No'ah, Choglah, Milkah, and Tirtzah.  4 They came near before El'azar the kohen, and before Yehoshu`a the son of Nun, and before the princes, saying, YHWH commanded Mosheh to give us an inheritance among our brothers: therefore according to the command of YHWH he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father.  5 There fell ten parts to Menashsheh, besides the land of Gil'ad and Bashan, which is beyond ha-Yarden;  6 because the daughters of Menashsheh had an inheritance among his sons. The land of Gil'ad belonged to the rest of the sons of Menashsheh.

17:7 The border of Menashsheh was from Asher to Mikhmetat, which is before Shekhem; and the border went along to the right hand, to the inhabitants of `Entappu'ach.  8 The land of Tappuach belonged to Menashsheh; but Tappuach on the border of Menashsheh belonged to the children of Efrayim.  9 The border went down to the brook of Kanah, southward of the brook: these cities belonged to Efrayim among the cities of Menashsheh: and the border of Menashsheh was on the north side of the brook, and the goings out of it were at the sea:  10 southward it was Efrayim's, and northward it was Menashsheh's, and the sea was his border; and they reached to Asher on the north, and to Yissakhar on the east.  11 Menashsheh had in Yissakhar and in Asher Beth-Shean and its towns, and Yivle'am and its towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of En-dor and its towns, and the inhabitants of Ta'nakh and its towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns, even the three heights.  12 Yet the children of Menashsheh couldn't drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the Kana'anim would dwell in that land.  13 It happened, when the children of Yisra'el had grown strong, that they put the Kana'anim to forced labor, and didn't utterly drive them out.

17:14 The children of Yosef spoke to Yehoshu`a, saying, Why have you given me but one lot and one part for an inheritance, seeing I am a great people, because hitherto YHWH has blessed me?  15 Yehoshu`a said to them, If you are a great people, go up to the forest, and cut down for yourself there in the land of the Perizzi and of the Refa'im; since the hill-country of Efrayim is too narrow for you.  16 The children of Yosef said, The hill-country is not enough for us: and all the Kana'anim who dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both they who are in Beth-Shean and its towns, and they who are in the valley of Yizre'el.  17 Yehoshu`a spoke to the house of Yosef, even to Efrayim and to Menashsheh, saying, You are a great people, and have great power; you shall not have one lot only:  18 but the hill-country shall be yours; for though it is a forest, you shall cut it down, and the goings out of it shall be yours; for you shall drive out the Kana'anim, though they have chariots of iron, and though they are strong.

PEREQ ‏יח‎
CHAPTER 18

18:1 The whole edah of the children of Yisra'el assembled themselves together at Shiloh, and set up the tent of meeting there: and the land was subdued before them.

18:2 There remained among the children of Yisra'el seven tribes, which had not yet divided their inheritance.  3 Yehoshu`a said to the children of Yisra'el, How long are you slack to go in to possess the land, which YHWH, the Elohe of your fathers, has given you?  4 Appoint for you three men of each tribe: and I will send them, and they shall arise, and walk through the land, and describe it according to their inheritance; and they shall come to me.  5 They shall divide it into seven portions: Yehudah shall abide in his border on the south, and the house of Yosef shall abide in their border on the north.  6 You shall describe the land into seven portions, and bring the description here to me; and I will cast lots for you here before YHWH our Elohe.  7 For the Levites have no portion among you; for the priesthood of YHWH is their inheritance: and Gad and Re'uven and the half-tribe of Menashsheh have received their inheritance beyond ha-Yarden eastward, which Mosheh the servant of YHWH gave them.

18:8 The men arose, and went: and Yehoshu`a charged those who went to describe the land, saying, Go and walk through the land, and describe it, and come again to me; and I will cast lots for you here before YHWH in Shiloh.  9 The men went and passed through the land, and described it by cities into seven portions in a book; and they came to Yehoshu`a to the camp at Shiloh.  10 Yehoshu`a cast lots for them in Shiloh before YHWH: and there Yehoshu`a divided the land to the children of Yisra'el according to their divisions.

18:11 The lot of the tribe of the children of Binyamin came up according to their families: and the border of their lot went out between the children of Yehudah and the children of Yosef.  12 Their border on the north quarter was from ha-Yarden; and the border went up to the side of Yericho on the north, and went up through the hill-country westward; and the goings out of it were at the wilderness of Beit-Aven.  13 The border passed along from there to Luz, to the side of Luz (the same is Beit-El), southward; and the border went down to `Atarot-Addar, by the mountain that lies on the south of Beit-Choron the lower.  14 The border extended there, and turned about on the west quarter southward, from the mountain that lies before Beit-Choron southward; and the goings out of it were at Kiryat-Ba'al (the same is Kiryat-Ye'arim), a city of the children of Yehudah: this was the west quarter.  15 The south quarter was from the uttermost part of Kiryat-Ye'arim; and the border went out westward, and went out to the spring of the waters of Nefto'ach;  16 and the border went down to the uttermost part of the mountain that lies before the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is in the valley of Refa'im northward; and it went down to the valley of Hinnom, to the side of the Yevusi southward, and went down to `En-Rogel;  17 and it extended northward, and went out at `En-Shemesh, and went out to Gelilot, which is over against the ascent of Adummim; and it went down to the stone of Bohan the son of Re'uven;  18 and it passed along to the side over against the `Aravah northward, and went down to the `Aravah;  19 and the border passed along to the side of Beit-Choglah northward; and the goings out of the border were at the north bay of the Salt Sea, at the south end of ha-Yarden: this was the south border.  20 ha-Yarden was the border of it on the east quarter. This was the inheritance of the children of Binyamin, by the borders of it round about, according to their families.

18:21 Now the cities of the tribe of the children of Binyamin according to their families were Yericho, and Beit-Choglah, and Emek-Ketzitz,  22 and Beit-Ha'aravah, and Tzemaryim, and Beit-El,  23 and `Avvim, and Parah, and Ofrat,  24 and Khefar-Ha'ammoni, and `Ofni, and Geva; twelve cities with their villages:  25 Giv'on, and Ramah, and Be'erot,  26 and Mitzpeh, and Kefirah, and Motzah,  27 and Rekem, and Yirp'el, and Tar'alah,  28 and Tzelah, Elef, and the Yevusi (the same is Yerushalayim), Giv'at, and Kiryat; fourteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the children of Binyamin according to their families.

CHAPTER 19

19:1 The second lot came out for Shim'on, even for the tribe of the children of Shim'on according to their families: and their inheritance was in the midst of the inheritance of the children of Yehudah.  2 They had for their inheritance Be'er-Sheva, or Sheva, and Moladah,  3 and Chatzar-Shu'al, and Balah, and `Etzem,  4 and Eltolad, and Beitul, and Chormah,  5 and Tziklag, and Beit-Markavot, and Chatzar-Susah,  6 and Beit-Leva'ot, and Sharuchen; thirteen cities with their villages:  7 `Ayin, Rimmon, and `Eter, and `Ashan; four cities with their villages:  8 and all the villages that were round about these cities to Ba'alat-Be'er, Ramah of the South. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Shim'on according to their families.  9 Out of the part of the children of Yehudah was the inheritance of the children of Shim'on; for the portion of the children of Yehudah was too much for them: therefore the children of Shim'on had inheritance in the midst of their inheritance.

19:10 The third lot came up for the children of Zevulun according to their families; and the border of their inheritance was to Sarid;  11 and their border went up westward, even to Mar'alah, and reached to Dabbeshet; and it reached to the brook that is before Yokne'am;  12 and it turned from Sarid eastward toward the sunrise to the border of Kislot-Tavor; and it went out to Daverat, and went up to Yafia;  13 and from there it passed along eastward to Gat-Chefer, to Eth-kazin; and it went out at Rimmon which stretches to Ne'ah;  14 and the border turned about it on the north to Channaton; and the goings out of it were at the valley of Yiftach-El;  15 and Kattat, and Nahalal, and Shimron, and Yid'alah, and Beit-Lechem: twelve cities with their villages.  16 This is the inheritance of the children of Zevulun according to their families, these cities with their villages.

19:17 The fourth lot came out for Yissakhar, even for the children of Yissakhar according to their families.  18 Their border was to Yizre'el, and Kesullot, and Shunem,  19 and Chafarayim, and Shi'on, and Anacharat,  20 and Rabbit, and Kishyon, and Evetz,  21 and Remet, and En-Gannim, and `En-Chaddah, and Beit-Patztzetz,  22 and the border reached to Tavor, and Shachatzmah, and Beth-shemesh; and the goings out of their border were at ha-Yarden: sixteen cities with their villages.  23 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Yissakhar according to their families, the cities with their villages.

19:24 The fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families.  25 Their border was Chelkat, and Chali, and Beten, and Akhshaf,  26 and Allammelekh, and `Am'ad, and Mish'al; and it reached to Karmel westward, and to Shichor-Livnat;  27 and it turned toward the sunrise to Beit-Dagon, and reached to Zevulun, and to the valley of Yiftach-El northward to Beit-Ha'emek and Ne'i'el; and it went out to Kavul on the left hand,  28 and `Evron, and Rechov, and Chammon, and Kanah, even to great Tzidon;  29 and the border turned to Ramah, and to the fortified city of Tzor; and the border turned to Chosah; and the goings out of it were at the sea by the region of Akhziv;  30 `Ummah also, and Afek, and Rechov: twenty-two cities with their villages.  31 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families, these cities with their villages.

19:32 The sixth lot came out for the children of Naftali, even for the children of Naftali according to their families.  33 Their border was from Chelef, from the oak in Tza'anannim, and Adami-Nekev, and Yavne'el, to Lakkum; and the goings out of it were at ha-Yarden;  34 and the border turned westward to Aznot-Tavor, and went out from there to Chukok; and it reached to Zevulun on the south, and reached to Asher on the west, and to Yehudah at ha-Yarden toward the sunrise.  35 The fortified cities were Tziddim, Tzer, and Chammat, Rakkat, and Kinneret,  36 and Adamah, and Ramah, and Chatzor,  37 and Kedesh, and Edre'i, and `En-Hatzor,  38 Yir'on, and Migdal-el, Chorem, and Beit-`Anat, and Beth-shemesh; nineteen cities with their villages.  39 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Naftali according to their families, the cities with their villages.

40 The seventh lot came out for the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families.  41 The border of their inheritance was Tzor'ah, and Eshta'ol, and `Ir-Shamesh,  42 and Sha'alabbin, and Ayalon, and Yitlah,  43 and Elon, and Timnata, and `Ekron,  44 and Eltekeh, and Gibbeton, and Ba'alat,  45 and Yehud, and Bene-berak, and Gath-rimmon,  46 and Meyarkon, and Rakkon, with the border over against Yafo.  47 The border of the children of Dan went out beyond them; for the children of Dan went up and fought against Leshem, and took it, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and lived therein, and called Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their father.  48 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families, these cities with their villages.

19:49 So they made an end of distributing the land for inheritance by the borders of it; and the children of Yisra'el gave an inheritance to Yehoshu`a the son of Nun in the midst of them:  50 according to the command of YHWH they gave him the city which he asked, even Timnat-Serach in the hill-country of Efrayim; and he built the city, and lived therein.

19:51 These are the inheritances, which El'azar the kohen, and Yehoshu`a the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers' houses of the tribes of the children of Yisra'el, distributed for inheritance by lot in Shiloh before YHWH, at the door of the tent of meeting. So they made an end of dividing the land.

CHAPTER 20

20:1 YHWH spoke to Yehoshu`a, saying,  2 Speak to the children of Yisra'el, saying, Assign you the cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you by Mosheh,  3 that the manslayer who kills any person unwittingly and unawares may flee there: and they shall be to you for a refuge from the avenger of blood.  4 He shall flee to one of those cities, and shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city, and declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city; and they shall take him into the city to them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them.  5 If the avenger of blood pursue after him, then they shall not deliver up the manslayer into his hand; because he struck his neighbor unawares, and didn't hate him before.  6 He shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the edah for judgment, until the death of the kohen gadol that shall be in those days: then shall the manslayer return, and come to his own city, and to his own house, to the city from whence he fled.

20:7 They set apart Kedesh in the Galil in the hill-country of Naftali, and Shekhem in the hill-country of Efrayim, and Kiryat-Arba (the same is Chevron) in the hill-country of Yehudah.  8 Beyond ha-Yarden at Yericho eastward, they assigned Betzer in the wilderness in the plain out of the tribe of Re'uven, and Ramot in Gil'ad out of the tribe of Gad, and Galon in Bashan out of the tribe of Menashsheh.  9 These were the appointed cities for all the children of Yisra'el, and for the stranger who sojourns among them, that whoever kills any person unwittingly might flee there, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the edah.

CHAPTER 21

21:1 Then came near the heads of fathers' houses of the Levites to El'azar the kohen, and to Yehoshu`a the son of Nun, and to the heads of fathers' houses of the tribes of the children of Yisra'el;  2 and they spoke to them at Shiloh in the land of Kana'an, saying, YHWH commanded Mosheh to give us cities to dwell in, with the suburbs of it for our cattle.  3 The children of Yisra'el gave to the Levites out of their inheritance, according to the command of YHWH, these cities with their suburbs.

21:4 The lot came out for the families of the Kehati: and the children of Aharon the kohen, who were of the Levites, had by lot out of the tribe of Yehudah, and out of the tribe of the Shim'oni, and out of the tribe of Binyamin, thirteen cities.

21:5 The rest of the children of Kehat had by lot out of the families of the tribe of Efrayim, and out of the tribe of Dan, and out of the half-tribe of Menashsheh, ten cities.

21:6 The children of Gershon had by lot out of the families of the tribe of Yissakhar, and out of the tribe of Asher, and out of the tribe of Naftali, and out of the half-tribe of Menashsheh in Bashan, thirteen cities.

21:7 The children of Merari according to their families had out of the tribe of Re'uven, and out of the tribe of Gad, and out of the tribe of Zevulun, twelve cities.

21:8 The children of Yisra'el gave by lot to the Levites these cities with their suburbs, as YHWH commanded by Mosheh.

21:9 They gave out of the tribe of the children of Yehudah, and out of the tribe of the children of Shim'on, these cities which are here mentioned by name:  10 and they were for the children of Aharon, of the families of the Kehati, who were of the children of Levi; for theirs was the first lot.  11 They gave them Kiryat-Arba, which Arba was the father of `Anak (the same is Chevron), in the hill-country of Yehudah, with the suburbs of it round about it.  12 But the fields of the city, and the villages of it, gave they to Kalev the son of Yefunneh for his possession.

21:13 To the children of Aharon the kohen they gave Chevron with its suburbs, the city of refuge for the manslayer, and Livnah with its suburbs,  14 and Yattir with its suburbs, and Eshtemoa with its suburbs,  15 and Cholon with its suburbs, and Devir with its suburbs,  16 and `Ayin with its suburbs, and Yuttah with its suburbs, and Beth-shemesh with its suburbs; nine cities out of those two tribes.  17 Out of the tribe of Binyamin, Giv'on with its suburbs, Geva with its suburbs,  18 `Anatot with its suburbs, and `Almon with its suburbs; four cities.  19 All the cities of the children of Aharon, the kohanim, were thirteen cities with their suburbs.

21:20 The families of the children of Kehat, the Levites, even the rest of the children of Kehat, they had the cities of their lot out of the tribe of Efrayim.  21 They gave them Shekhem with its suburbs in the hill-country of Efrayim, the city of refuge for the manslayer, and Gezer with its suburbs,  22 and Kivtza'im with its suburbs, and Beit-Choron with its suburbs; four cities.  23 Out of the tribe of Dan, Elteke with its suburbs, Gibbeton with its suburbs,  24 Ayalon with its suburbs, Gath-rimmon with its suburbs; four cities.  25 Out of the half-tribe of Menashsheh, Ta'nakh with its suburbs, and Gath-rimmon with its suburbs; two cities.  26 All the cities of the families of the rest of the children of Kehat were ten with their suburbs.

21:27 To the children of Gershon, of the families of the Levites, out of the half-tribe of Menashsheh they gave Galon in Bashan with its suburbs, the city of refuge for the manslayer, and Be'eshterah with its suburbs; two cities.  28 Out of the tribe of Yissakhar, Kishyon with its suburbs, Daverat with its suburbs,  29 Yarmut with its suburbs, `En-Gannim with its suburbs; four cities.  30 Out of the tribe of Asher, Mish'al with its suburbs, `Avdon with its suburbs, 31 Chelkat with its suburbs, and Rechov with its suburbs; four cities.  32 Out of the tribe of Naftali, Kedesh in the Galil with its suburbs, the city of refuge for the manslayer, and Chammot-dor with its suburbs, and Kartan with its suburbs; three cities.  33 All the cities of the Gershoni according to their families were thirteen cities with their suburbs.

21:34 To the families of the children of Merari, the rest of the Levites, out of the tribe of Zevulun, Yokne'am with its suburbs, and Kartah with its suburbs,  35 Dimnah with its suburbs, Nahalal with its suburbs; four cities.  36 Out of the tribe of Re'uven, Betzer with its suburbs, and Yahatz with its suburbs,  37 Kedemot with its suburbs, and Mefa'at with its suburbs; four cities.  38 Out of the tribe of Gad, Ramot in Gil'ad with its suburbs, the city of refuge for the manslayer, and Machanayim with its suburbs,  39 Cheshbon with its suburbs, Ya'zer with its suburbs; four cities in all.  40 All these were the cities of the children of Merari according to their families, even the rest of the families of the Levites; and their lot was twelve cities.

21:41 All the cities of the Levites in the midst of the possession of the children of Yisra'el were forty-eight cities with their suburbs.  42 These cities were every one with their suburbs round about them: thus it was with all these cities.

21:43 So YHWH gave to Yisra'el all the land which he swore to give to their fathers; and they possessed it, and lived therein.  44 YHWH gave them rest round about, according to all that he swore to their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; YHWH delivered all their enemies into their hand.  45 There failed not anything of any good thing which YHWH had spoken to the house of Yisra'el; all came to pass.

CHAPTER 22

22:1 Then Yehoshu`a called the Re'uveni, and the Gadi, and the half-tribe of Menashsheh,  2 and said to them, You have kept all that Mosheh the servant of YHWH commanded you, and have listened to my voice in all that I commanded you:  3 you have not left your brothers these many days to this day, but have kept the charge of the mitzvah of YHWH your Elohe.  4 Now YHWH your Elohe has given rest to your brothers, as he spoke to them: therefore now turn you, and get you to your tents, to the land of your possession, which Mosheh the servant of YHWH gave you beyond ha-Yarden.  5 Only take diligent heed to do the mitzvah and the Torah which Mosheh the servant of YHWH commanded you, to love YHWH your Elohe, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his mitzvot, and to cleave to him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your nephesh.  6 So Yehoshu`a blessed them, and sent them away; and they went to their tents.

22:7 Now to the one half-tribe of Menashsheh Mosheh had given inheritance in Bashan; but to the other half gave Yehoshu`a among their brothers beyond ha-Yarden westward; moreover when Yehoshu`a sent them away to their tents, he blessed them,  8 and spoke to them, saying, Return with much wealth to your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much clothing: divide the spoil of your enemies with your brothers.  9 The children of Re'uven and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Menashsheh returned, and departed from the children of Yisra'el out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Kana'an, to go to the land of Gil'ad, to the land of their possession, which they owned, according to the command of YHWH by Mosheh.

22:10 When they came to the region about ha-Yarden, that is in the land of Kana'an, the children of Re'uven and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Menashsheh built there an altar by ha-Yarden, a great altar to look on.  11 The children of Yisra'el heard say, Behold, the children of Re'uven and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Menashsheh have built an altar in the forefront of the land of Kana'an, in the region about ha-Yarden, on the side that pertains to the children of Yisra'el.  12 When the children of Yisra'el heard of it, the whole edah of the children of Yisra'el gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up against them to war.

22:13 The children of Yisra'el sent to the children of Re'uven, and to the children of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Menashsheh, into the land of Gil'ad, Pinchas the son of El'azar the kohen,  14 and with him ten princes, one prince of a fathers' house for each of the tribes of Yisra'el; and they were everyone of them head of their fathers' houses among the thousands of Yisra'el.  15 They came to the children of Re'uven, and to the children of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Menashsheh, to the land of Gil'ad, and they spoke with them, saying,  16 Thus says the whole edah of YHWH, What trespass is this that you have committed against the Elohe of Yisra'el, to turn away this day from following YHWH, in that you have built you an altar, to rebel this day against YHWH?  17 Is the iniquity of Pe'or too little for us, from which we have not cleansed ourselves to this day, although there came a plague on the edah of YHWH,  18 that you must turn away this day from following YHWH? and it will be, seeing you rebel today against YHWH, that tomorrow he will be angry with the whole edah of Yisra'el.  19 However, if the land of your possession be unclean, then pass over to the land of the possession of YHWH, in which YHWH's tent dwells, and take possession among us: but don't rebel against YHWH, nor rebel against us, in building you an altar besides the altar of YHWH our Elohe.  20 Didn't `Akhan the son of Zerach commit a trespass in the devoted thing,22-20 and wrath fell on all the edah of Yisra'el? and that man didn't perish alone in his iniquity.

22:21 Then the children of Re'uven and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Menashsheh answered, and spoke to the heads of the thousands of Yisra'el,  22 El, Elohim, YHWH, El, Elohim, YHWH, he knows; and Yisra'el he shall know: if it be in rebellion, or if in trespass against YHWH (don't save us this day),  23 that we have built us an altar to turn away from following YHWH; or if to offer thereon burnt offering or meal-offering, or if to offer sacrifices of peace-offerings thereon, let YHWH himself require it;  24 and if we have not rather out of carefulness done this, and of purpose, saying, In time to come your children might speak to our children, saying, What have you to do with YHWH, the Elohe of Yisra'el?  25 for YHWH has made ha-Yarden a border between us and you, you children of Re'uven and children of Gad; you have no portion in YHWH: so might your children make our children cease from fearing YHWH.  26 Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice:  27 but it shall be a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we may do the service of YHWH before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace-offerings; that your children may not tell our children in time to come, You have no portion in YHWH.  28 Therefore said we, It shall be, when they so tell us or to our generations in time to come, that we shall say, Behold the pattern of the altar of YHWH, which our fathers made, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice; but it is a witness between us and you.  29 Far be it from us that we should rebel against YHWH, and turn away this day from following YHWH, to build an altar for burnt-offering, for meal-offering, or for sacrifice, besides the altar of YHWH our Elohe that is before his tent.

22:30 When Pinchas the kohen, and the princes of the edah, even the heads of the thousands of Yisra'el that were with him, heard the words that the children of Re'uven and the children of Gad and the children of Menashsheh spoke, it pleased them well.  31 Pinchas the son of El'azar the kohen said to the children of Re'uven, and to the children of Gad, and to the children of Menashsheh, This day we know that YHWH is in the midst of us, because you have not committed this trespass against YHWH: now have you delivered the children of Yisra'el out of the hand of YHWH.

22:32 Pinchas the son of El'azar the kohen, and the princes, returned from the children of Re'uven, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gil'ad, to the land of Kana'an, to the children of Yisra'el, and brought them word again.  33 The thing pleased the children of Yisra'el; and the children of Yisra'el blessed Elohim, and spoke no more of going up against them to war, to destroy the land in which the children of Re'uven and the children of Gad lived.  34 The children of Re'uven and the children of Gad called the altar `Ed: For, said they, it is a witness between us that YHWH is Elohim.

PEREQ ‏כג‎
CHAPTER 23

23:1 It happened after many days, when YHWH had given rest to Yisra'el from all their enemies round about, and Yehoshu`a was old and well stricken in years;  2 that Yehoshu`a called for all Yisra'el, for their elders and for their heads, and for their judges and for their officers, and said to them, I am old and well stricken in years:  3 and you have seen all that YHWH your Elohe has done to all these nations because of you; for YHWH your Elohe, he it is that has fought for you.  4 Behold, I have allotted to you these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from ha-Yarden, with all the nations that I have cut off, even to the great sea toward the going down of the sun.  5 YHWH your Elohe, he will thrust them out from before you, and drive them from out of your sight; and you shall possess their land, as YHWH your Elohe spoke to you.  6 Therefore be you very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the Torah of Mosheh, that you not turn aside from it to the right hand or to the left;  7 that you not come among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their elohim, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow down yourselves to them;  8 but cleave to YHWH your Elohe, as you have done to this day.  9 For YHWH has driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man has stood before you to this day.  10 One man of you shall chase a thousand; for YHWH your Elohe, he it is who fights for you, as he spoke to you.  11 Take good heed therefore to yourselves, that you love YHWH your Elohe.  12 Else if you do at all go back, and cleave to the remnant of these nations, even these who remain among you, and make marriages with them, and go in to them, and they to you;  13 know for a certainty that YHWH your Elohe will no more drive these nations from out of your sight; but they shall be a snare and a trap to you, and a scourge in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from off this good land which YHWH your Elohe has given you.

23:14 Behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and you know in all your hearts and in all your nephesh, that not one thing has failed of all the good things which YHWH your Elohe spoke concerning you; all are happen to you, not one thing has failed of it.  15 It shall happen, that as all the good things are come on you of which YHWH your Elohe spoke to you, so will YHWH bring on you all the evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which YHWH your Elohe has given you.  16 When you disobey the covenant of YHWH your Elohe, which he commanded you, and go and serve other elohim, and bow down yourselves to them; then will the anger of YHWH be kindled against you, and you shall perish quickly from off the good land which he has given to you.

PEREQ ‏כד‎
CHAPTER 24

24:1 Yehoshu`a gathered all the tribes of Yisra'el to Shekhem, and called for the elders of Yisra'el, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before Elohim.  2 Yehoshu`a said to all the people, Thus says YHWH, the Elohe of Yisra'el, Your fathers lived of old time beyond the River, even Terach, the father of Avraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other elohim . 3 I took your father Avraham from beyond the River, and led him throughout all the land of Kana'an, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Yitzchak.  4 I gave to Yitzchak Ya'akov and Esav: and I gave to Esav Mount Se'ir, to possess it: and Ya'akov and his children went down into Mitzrayim.  5 I sent Mosheh and Aharon, and I plagued Mitzrayim, according to that which I did in the midst of it: and afterward I brought you out.  6 I brought your fathers mi-Mitzrayim: and you came to the sea; and Mitzrayim pursued after your fathers with chariots and with horsemen to the Sea of Suf.  7 When they cried out to YHWH, he put darkness between you and Mitzrayim, and brought the sea on them, and covered them; and your eyes saw what I did in Mitzrayim: and you lived in the wilderness many days.  8 I brought you into the land of the Amori, that lived beyond ha-Yarden: and they fought with you; and I gave them into your hand, and you possessed their land; and I destroyed them from before you.  9 Then Balak the son of Tzippor, king of Mo'av, arose and fought against Yisra'el: and he sent and called Bil'am the son of Be'or to curse you;  10 but I would not listen to Bil'am; therefore he blessed you still: so I delivered you out of his hand.  11 You went over ha-Yarden, and came to Yericho: and the men of Yericho fought against you, the Amori, and the Perizzi, and the Kana'ani, and the Chittite, and the Girgashi, the Chivvi, and the Yevusi; and I delivered them into your hand.  12 I sent the hornet before you, which drove them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amori; not with your sword, nor with your bow.  13 I gave you a land whereon you had not labored, and cities which you didn't build, and you dwell therein; of vineyards and olive groves which you didn't plant do you eat.

24:14 Now therefore fear YHWH, and serve him in sincerity and in truth; and put away the elohim which your fathers served beyond the River, and in Mitzrayim; and serve you YHWH.  15 If it seem evil to you to serve YHWH, choose you this day whom you will serve; whether the elohim which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the elohe of the Amori, in whose land you dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve YHWH.

24:16 The people answered, Far be it from us that we should forsake YHWH, to serve other elohim;  17 for YHWH our Elohe, he it is who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Mitzrayim, from the house of bondage, and who did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way in which we went, and among all the peoples through the midst of whom we passed;  18 and YHWH drove out from before us all the peoples, even the Amori who lived in the land: therefore we also will serve YHWH; for he is our Elohe.

24:19 Yehoshu`a said to the people, You can't serve YHWH; for he is a holy Elohim; he is a jealous El; he will not forgive your disobedience nor your sins.  20 If you forsake YHWH, and serve foreign elohe, then he will turn and do you evil, and consume you, after that he has done you good.  21 The people said to Yehoshu`a, No; but we will serve YHWH.  22 Yehoshu`a said to the people, You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen you YHWH, to serve him. They said, We are witnesses.  23 Now therefore put away, said he, the foreign elohe which are among you, and incline your heart to YHWH, the Elohe of Yisra'el.  24 The people said to Yehoshu`a, YHWH our Elohe will we serve, and to his voice will we listen.  25 So Yehoshu`a made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shekhem.  26 Yehoshu`a wrote these words in the book of the Torah of Elohim; and he took a great stone, and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of YHWH.  27 Yehoshu`a said to all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us; for it has heard all the words of YHWH which he spoke to us: it shall be therefore a witness against you, lest you deny your Elohe.  28 So Yehoshu`a sent the people away, every man to his inheritance.

24:29 It happened after these things, that Yehoshu`a the son of Nun, the servant of YHWH, died, being one hundred ten years old.  30 They buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnat-Serach, which is in the hill-country of Efrayim, on the north of the mountain of Ga'ash.

24:31 Yisra'el served YHWH all the days of Yehoshu`a, and all the days of the elders who outlived Yehoshu`a, and had known all the work of YHWH, that he had worked for Yisra'el.

24:32 The bones of Yosef, which the children of Yisra'el brought up mi-Mitzrayim, buried they in Shekhem, in the parcel of ground which Ya'akov bought of the sons of Chamor the father of Shekhem for a hundred pieces of money: and they became the inheritance of the children of Yosef.

24:33 El'azar the son of Aharon died; and they buried him in the hill of Pinchas his son, which was given him in the hill-country of Efrayim.
